Keywords for Photos?  Database?  Tri-pod?

I took a photograph w/ my iPhone of my 8 by 11" notes and found it quite legible on the iPhone. Each work day, I take a page full of handwritten notes and this could be a handy way of archiving these notes - otherwise they soon build up to an unmanageable pile.
To turn this into a handy organizing technique, I need software that would allow me to attach keywords and date and time stamp these photos - like a mini-iPhoto, but I want to do all the work on the iPhone not back on my Mac.
Essentially, I need a database of the photos I take on my iPhone that will allow me to quickly retrieve these images in those rare(?) events that I need a detail I jotted down a few days prior.
TIA,
Allan
It might also be handy to have a tri-pod that would hold the iPhone steady at the exact distance necessary to shoot an 8x11" object.

Try the Evernote app.
Not only will it take your pics it will move them to a server (so you can get to them from any computer) and it can also OCR words in pictures and create editable text files of them.

  • Importing keywords from external database

I have a simple request that seems to be impossible. Back in the days before LIghtroom, I had a database that identified most of my images, cross-referenced to their filename.  Rather than manually keyword these thousands of images, I would like to import the keywords based on the data already inputted into the database. Is there any way to accomplish this?
    TIA,
    Richard

    Richard,
I assume you're talking about photos already imported into LR.
AFAIK there's now way to batch update keywords for photos in the catalog, as PlugIns are currently not allowed to modify keywords.
LR/Transporter PlugIn provides a way to import metadata from a file, but not keywords. LR/Transporter suggests a partial workaround for this (see "The Keyword Conundrum" on this LR/Transporter page).

  • Search for photos with multiple keywords

I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to search for photos that have multiple keywords.   When selecting multiple keywords in a Bridge search the default behavior is to find photos that have any of the keywords rather than all of the keyword.  In other words I want to do an AND keyboard rather than an OR search.

You should be able to do so in the find menu of Bridge (Edit/Find or cmd+F)
With the plus sign you can add an extra (and) keyword to it.
A shortcut may be to first find one keyword and then use the filter panel
keyword section and select the other wished keywords by putting a checkmark
in front, only the selected files will show in the content window.
In other words I want to do an AND keyboard rather than an OR search.

    2) Can I back up the newsstand to iCloud and save memory on the iPhone?

    1. What format is the external drive? It sounds like it's ina format that Macs can't write to. Is it a NAS or NTFS?
    2. Easiest thing: just move your iPhoto Library to the external
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Final Cut Server for still photo database?

I know that FCS was intended to be use for video production database, but I have heard it could be applied to other database uses, such as a digital photo database. I haven't seen or heard of anyone doing this, but our unit is looking to replace our current database software (Cumulus) with a more user-friendly application. Our unit is a university support office with both video and digital still photography. Our current still image database is over 100,000 files. Has anyone used FCS for this type of database application?

We are currently using it as a Photo/Video database.
I've only put about 3000 images/clips in there so far
but it seems to be working well.
We are running it on a old Quad G5 and have some
custom conversions set up for adding images and
    videos.
Our Web team can take our videos and in two clicks
have a WMV and FLV video for their sites and then
select a few images and do a quick convert to web
    sized imges..all within FCS
It would be nice to see a open architecture with plugin support
and more file compatibility, but for now it works great
as a database for images and video.

  • [tip] search for / selecting NO keywords (selection photos without a keyword)

Probably it is old news but I couldn't find it here that fast.
I have 20.000 photos, some have a keyword(s) some have not. So I searched for a selection of photographs without a keyword. But there is none.
The trick is to add a special keyword you normally not use like (only) "_" (underscore) to all photos without a keyword. But there is no way to select photos wihtout a keyword... So I came up with a two step strategy and this trick only cost 2-3 minutes with 20.000 photos:
Add the "_" keyword to all you photos.
Select all photos with a real keyword by shift clicking on all keywords tags except "_".
Remove the "_" keyword from those photos.
Now select the "_" keyword or search on the "_" keyword.
A how to, in 14 steps:
    1. Hit G, goto library (in left panel) and click on "all photographs"
    2. Select all photos by pressing ctrl-a
    3. Wait till LR is ready displaying all used keywords in the right keywords panel
    4. In right panel under keywording/keyword tags add the keyword "_"
    5. Wait till LR is ready updating all your photos (20.000 photos: 1 minute)
    6. Goto "Keyword tags" in the left panel
    7. Select the (suppose the second) keyword just after the "_" keyword by left clicking.
    8. Scroll down till the end in the keyword list
    9. Now, shift click on the last keyword
    10. You now selected all keywords except the "_" keyword and all are highlihted
    11. Select all photo's (ctrl-a)
    12. Wait till LR shows all the keywords in the Keywording/keyword tags panel on the right
check: the keyword "_" should have no asterix like "_*" if so: goto step 1!
    13. Remove the "_" keyword and press enter
    14. Wait till LR is ready
From now on while selecting the "_" keyword or searching on the keyword "_" LR will only show the photos without a (real) keyword.
Of course, as soon as you add keyword(s) to your foto(s) you have to delete the "_" keyword.
Speed tip: when starting keywording, select the photo you like to add real keywords, ctrl-k brings you directly to the keyword tags panel in edit mode, hit backspace (to delete the "_" keyword and start typing your keywords and hit enter or tab when done. Then immediately (of course) the photo dissapears from your "_" keyword selection photos and the next photo is selected and is waiting for you to hit ctrl-k and start again. Look mam, "no mouse used!"
    Have fun!

    >I have 20.000 photos, some have a keyword(s) some have not. So I searched for a selection of photographs without a keyword. But there is none.
There is actually, and it is much simpler:
Using the Find Panel, choose Text: Keywords and Rule: Are Empty.

  • Trying to decide on best configuration for photo/video on 27" iMac.

I want to get the new 27" iMac. I plan to use it for photography as well as some light video editing.
I decided on the 1TB fusion drive.
But what I want to know is what is the main reason for the $200 price diff btwn the base 2.9ghz 27" iMac ($1,799) and the base 3.2ghz 27" iMac($1,999)??
Besides the slight diff in ghz(they are both 3.6ghz with turbo boost by the way)...I only notice that the $1,999 iMac has a faster GPU with 1gig of VRAM as opposed to 512mb.
They are both i5 and identical in every other regard. Is the GPU worth the extra $200 for what I am doing?
What would be more beneficial for photo & video editing? Bumping up to an i7 for $180 more? Or bumping the GPU to the 680mx with 2gigs of VRAM for $135 more?
    Thanks!
Can't wait to order mine. :-)

what is the main reason for the $200 price diff btwn the base 2.9ghz 27" iMac ($1,799) and the base 3.2ghz 27" iMac($1,999)??
The differences are 1) the slightly faster CPU, 2) a slightly upgraded GPU with increased VRAM and 3) the ability to upgrade to an i7 processor at the time you place your order.
imho you will be better off investing the $200 price difference in more RAM and/or the Fusion Drive before worrying about the slight speed difference between a 2.9GHz and a 3.2GHZ i5 processor.
RAM and disk drive access times have a significant effect on overall system performance.  Photo and video editing performance will be greatly influenced by the amount of RAM available and disk drive access speed ... far more than a mere 0.3GHz difference in cpu processor speed.
The price difference is even bigger ($400) if you are comparing a 2.9GHz i5 to the 3.4GHz i7 versions.

  • A photo database? On a Mac.

I'm doing it in Excel, but it's a monstrous job to create hyperlinks to hundreds of photo titles to view them, one, by one, by one.
I can't automate it in Excel for mac.
I've tried automate and macros, but none will simply:
take the selected photo-title from the list, copy and paste it into a search box, find the photo, select it, and generate a hyperlink.
I'd like to find some software that would make it possible to link up photo titles to their files to view in Preview without doing it one by one.
All the photos are in the same folder with names like 0001.jpg, 0002.jpg.  It ought to be easier than this.
    Any suggestions?

Lundberg, you're right.  I was searching for databases that would accomodate photos.  When I started searching for photo cataloguing everything fell into place.  First I found I good cheap product called PIXA.  A nice little cataloguing tool and it makes thumbnails so that you don't have to be connected to a particular drive to see the photos on that drive.  Then I realized that since I pay for Creative Cloud, there might be a good cataloguing tool from Adobe.  And I downloaded Lightroom.  It's terrific.  Everything I could ask and more.  Thanks.  L.

  • Both DAG indexes for a database failed

Hi all, looking for a suggestion on how I might be able to resolve this indexing issue.
We've got a two node Exchange 2013 DAG. On the primary copy of the database, the index keeps failing and restarting its crawl. On the secondary copy, the node is showing that the index is Failed and Suspended.
We'd stopped the search services and blown away the index folder for the DB on the mounted copy and let the crawl resume, but after a while we'll see it fail and then resume still. Looking at the High Availability > Seeding logs, event 1112 is getting
logged every few minutes or more:
Automatic Reseed Manager has detected a content indexing error for database 'DB06'. The catalog may be corrupted and will be reseeded automatically. contentIndexError: The content index of old schema version 1. Newer version 12 is available.
Indexes on all other databases are healthy.
So I need to figure out the best possible way to recover the indexes for this database. I can't fail over to the secondary node with a failed index, but it looks like I could force it if I have to. I haven't yet tried deleting the index on the secondary
copy, and my suspicion is trying to reseed off the mounted copy will just be bad for the secondary copy. And the schema error concerns me too.
Any suggestions on how best to resolve this?

The only error I'm seeing is event 1009 in the Application log:

Other than that, as it crawls the index before failing, I see it cycling through tmp files, two or three at a time. Each one changes out and it keeps going until it fails. I don't recall seeing this happen with indexes before, this is pretty new to me.

  • Management of more than thousands of KEYWORDS for stock photographers on Lightroom?

We create thousand of images per month, thus have to handle strategically thousand of keywords per month. 2 essential questions for our business:
1- How is it possible to order keywords vs. alphabetical order apart from using print letters?
2- How to manage hundreds of keywords without having an incredible and impossible to read list of keywords? We've tried to use the synonymous but the option cannot work for our purpose. Thanks for your expertise in responding to us with clear solutions!

  • Common Keywords for Multiple Libraries

    Hello,
I have a number of iPhoto libraries, each of which has its own set of Keywords. I now want to use a single set of Keywords to all the libraries. Is there a way to do this without having to manually edit the Keyword preferences for each library?
    Thanks.
    Mike

    Hello Terence,
I have no idea who Kevin is! Sorry about that. Now that I have the name straight, maybe I can get my message straight!
I understand that the keywords are part of the iPhoto database. My goal is for all my libraries to share a common list of keywords. Specific pictures in a library would be assigned applicable keywords from the common list. Thus, keywords for particular pictures will be different in almost all cases. This difference is why I don't see how to avoid having to assign the specific keywords on a picture by picture basis.
Thanks for the Keyword Manager link. It gets great reviews and I think it could be very helpful for what I am trying to do. However, KM 1.4.1 fails to install on my iBook G4, OS 10.4.11. I have posted this to Bullstorm and it looks like I need to install SIMBL in order for KM to install. From my web searches it looks like SIMBL could lead to headaches with future software upgrades. After I update my keywords, I plan to upgrade from iPhoto 6 to iPhoto 8 and then later this year I will move to OS 10.5. Assuming no other changes do you think this will lead to problems with SIMBL?
Thanks for your help and patience!
    Mike
