Keywords for RAW & JPG files

In Bridge CS5 I  have a folder with several RAW files. I have edited those shots and saved them as jpg's. I just went and applied keywords to the files and it worked perfectly on the RAW files but not the jpg's. I get an error message about there being an error writing metadata. Coincidently the jpg's were created in CS5. I went back to a jpg created earlier with CS4 and I was able to apply a keyword to that file. Do I have a setting wrong?

This is a permissions issue with the operating system.  Probably the new file was set at a "read only" file.    This is changed in windows explorer.

Ah, gotchya. Your Fuji camera must not then be on this list here?  http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html  You could presumably use the sw that came with the camera and create jpegs or tiffs with them and keep them in aperture along side the unsupported raws, in stacks.

  • Duplicate (sidecar) RAW & JPG files in Organiser

    Hello,
I usually store both RAW and a small JPG file for each photo I take using a Canon EOS 7D. When these are imported into Lightroom 4.4, Lightroom only shows one image, reporting that the associated JPG is a 'sidecar' image. When imported into Photoshop Elements 11 Organiser both photos are displayed i.e. every single photo is duplicated.
How do I configure Photoshop Elements 11 Organiser to only show one photo for each RAW/JPG set?
    Thanks in advance,
    David.

Lightroom and the Organizer have something in common : they do not contain picture files. They only store the information about where the files are physically stored. They are a list of those paths (locations). Raws and jpegs of the same shot are two different picture files. So, you can't speak about duplication from that point of view.
What Lightroom and the Organizer don't have in common is the way they deal with the 'duos' of raw and jpeg files. At the import stage, the Organizer always considers the files as distinct and imports both of them as described by 99jon. LR recognizes the fact that both files are two variants from a single shot and offers a choice of how to import : ignore the jpeg or consider ist as a kind of 'sidecar' file.
How to use the organizer so that it shows only one thumbnail once they have been imported ? That's possible if you use the visual similarity search : you can choose to automatically suggest photo stacks just after the import stage. Your files will be stacked and you'll see only one photo in the browsing space. You can collapse stacks or expand them in the browsing space. After stacking, any organizing task such as rating, keywording will be applied to both files much like in real version sets.
I don't think that you really need to shoot raw + jpeg most of the time.
It may be useful when you are getting acquainted with raw processing.
It may be to have an instant way to display the pictures on your card when you have no computer at hand. In that case, deleting the jpegs from catalog just after the import into the catalog is the quickest and simplest solution.
For viewing the raw pictures on your computer without Elements, it may be useful to have another free software able to show the thumbnails of raw files (faststone, xnview...)
Also, if shooting raw only, it's easy to export a (temporary) ad hoc jpeg version of your import batch from the Organizer to share with friends. It's best done after culling and rating and doing some quick keywording.

  • LR4 How to view RAW+JPG files?

    Hello --
I have been wondering about this for quite some time. I know there is the option to "treat jpg as seperate files" in the library, but i feel it clutters up the library so i tend to avoid this. However, if i treat them as the same, the JPG does get saved into the hard-drives directories, but it isn't visible at all in LR. I understand that this is by design, but what is the point of it then, if there is no way for me to look at the jpg (e.g. for comparison).
so my question: is there a way to see the jpg file, unless i treat it as a seperate file (and hence de facto duplicate the number of images in my library)? what i am looking for, is occasionally being able to view that jpg that has been saved to the directory.
thanks in advance for your reply.
    patrick.

i agree with you and understand your point. my problem is that the auto-stacking doesn;t seem to work all the time properly, and i would have in that case to manually go through a rather large set. i am wondering if i may just be best off importing the files as the same and not seperate since this will ensure that the jpg's are at least archived. if i then need to look for one, i can always somehow grab it out of the catalogue. not exactly ideal, but may be adobe eventually will make it easier to access the jpg....

  • Support for RAW photo files under iOS8

I have an iPad Mini 2 which I've been using as a temporary back up of the JPEG and NEF raw files from my Nikon DSLR while I'm traveling.  When I got home, I would always transfer the backup photos from the iPad to my Mac Pro.  This worked flawlessly when I had iOS 7 installed on the iPad.  However,  it has stopped working now that I've (accidentally) upgraded my iPad to iOS 8.1.   I can still download my JPEG backup files from the iPad to the Mac, but the download of the raw files fails every time with a system error message.  It fails whether I try to download the photos in iPhoto, Lightroom, or even Image Capture...the error message is always the same.  From the size of the raw image file on the iPad (42 MB), I know it's not just a null/empty file of 0 MB in size.  Has anyone else experienced this problem since upgrading to iOS 8 on their iPads?  Can anyone sugge a fix for my problem?  On the Mac Pro I'm running OS 10.9.5, Mavericks, not Yosemite.

Here's more information on this issue.
As an experiment, instead of loading my photo files onto my iPad Mini via Apple's camera kit (the memory card reader), I emailed myself two test files, one JPEG and one NEF.  I opened the email msg on my iPad and saved both files to the iPad.   Both files showed up in the Photos app.  I then brought up Image Capture on my Mac and used it to transfer the files over from the iPad.  This worked perfectly and both the JPEG and the raw NEF copied over correctly to the Mac.  What this suggests is that the problem is probably isolated and occurs only when the raw files are copied from the memory card using the Apple dongle.
I've been in touch with Apple Support and had two on-line chats with them so far.  The issue has now been kicked over to the "engineers" (not sure exactly what that means).  They are now aware of the problem but I received no other information.   It might help if you also contacted Apple Support to let them know more than one person is experiencing the same problem.

  • Improved stacking for dual format pictures (RAW+JPG files)

Since I couldn´t find any description in the knowledgebase, I guess these features are missing:
My DSLR (Nikon) generates two copies of each picture (NEF+JPG) and I like to keep both of them (RAW for editing and JPG for ease of use (and for better results of the camera-built-in RAW-converter in some cases).
I use the auto stack by capture time feature to build stacks of each identical pair of pictures.
    However:
    - Which picture (JPG or RAW) ends up on top of the stack is sort of random
    - All modifications apply to the picture on top only, so basically you need to pick/flag/label them with metadata individually which is not very convenient
It would save a lot of time if handling of stacked pictures could be improved.
    Thx

    Olivier,
You are correct, but also note that the switch is not kept by folder but for the LR installation and affects all imports/synchronize folders you perform from then on.
The only "useful" feature I can see in keeping the JPEGs as sidecars is that file system opertions (deletes/moves) will affect both the Raw and the JPEG.

  • Photoshop Updates for RAW Camera Files from a Rebel T4i

I have a Canon Rebel T4i, and I'm trying to get the update for my photoshop cs5 to be able to open it, but nothing is helping. I'm stuck at the 6.7 plugin and can't update it any further. I tried installing 7.1 (which is what it needs to open the raw files) but it didn't let me, so I'm assuming I have to update it by sequence (6.8, 6.9, etc.) except I can't find the update for 6.8 anywhere. How can I update it to read these raw files?

ACR 7.1 and beyond is only compatible with CS6 and up. There never was a 6.8 or 6.9. Therefore you will need to find a way to upgrade or settle for the free DNG converter in the meantime. Refer to this for more details:

  • PSE5 - Stacking RAW / JPEG Files

With my Nikon D80, I am starting to shoot a lot assignments using the combination of RAW + JPEG files.
I am using the auto-staking feature of PSE5 when adding files and folders, with the expectation that it would quickly stack the RAW+JPEG combinations into a single stack for each pair.
Instead, I'm getting a frustratingly wide range of results. In some cases, the RAW and JPEGs are not stacked, and the stack has to be manually created.
In other instances, I'll get 2, 4, or 3 pairs of photos in a single stack and have to divide them with the little scissors tool. These combinations are not necessarily rapid exposures. I haven't been using the multiple exposure setting on the D80.
All in all, this is adding to my workflow instead of expediting it. Is there not some way to set parameters to establish how auto-stacks are determined?
On a similar subject, is there any way to tell PSE5 WHICH of the files I want to see on the top of the stack? I'd rather see the RAW for starters, but then sometimes, I might want to see the JPEGs instead. Is there some way to set / switch the top photo for all of them at once?
    Thanks,
    --PS

    Hi Paul,
the automatic stacking feature finds similar pictures. Most of the time it works well for RAW/JPG files but sometimes (e.g. sunset pictures with a bad automatic white balance assumption for the RAW) it won't find the pairs. You then have to do it manually as you have described it.
In the stacking window you can drag your preferred file to the first position for being the top picture. After creating the stacks you can change the top picture by opening the stack, right clicking on your preferred picture and choosing "Make top picture" (or similar, I have the german version, so I don't know the english menu text) in the stacking sub menu.
I had the same problem and know I decided to move all JPGs to an unmanaged folder, so I won't see all my images doubled and I can stack only those images that I want to stack.

  • What is the point of jpg files being sidecar files to raw images?

When importing folders containing raw and jpeg copies of each image (in my case NEF and JPG), you only ever have access to the raw file in LR, even though the jpeg is imported into the catalogue. I can't really see the point of this functionality, apart from knowing that there is a jpeg present.
Although you can import with the 'treat JPEG ... as separate photos' option checked, if you have already imported without this option, applied adjustments, etc. to your raw images, then decided that you want to see the jpg images as well, it seems that you can't do it and preserve your raw image adjustments. I tried exporting the catalogue, then deleting the raw+jpeg images from the catalogue, re-importing with treat jpeg as separate photos, then trying to restore the raw adjustments from the exported catalogue. This resulted in a Warning dialog - 'Lightroom could not import this catalogue because of an unknown error'. This is not very helpful. Despite this 'unknown error', I ended up with one duplicated raw file (the first image) with the adjustments that I saved in the exported catalogue.
It would be far better and more useful (to me at least) if LR had a function that could toggle between the 'coupled' and 'uncoupled' state for raw+jpeg files in a similar way that images can be stacked and unstacked. I would like to be able to selectively view my jpeg's for comparison purposes with the raw images, since LR generally does a poor job of converting NEF files to an 'as shot' image, which is where I would like to start from. I love LR, but feel that its inability to handle NEF conversions properly is a very big minus.
    Tony

To your post header, I think the point of referenced images is self evident. They allow you to store your images on external media, or to utilize your own folder structure for organization in the finder. Many people prefer this to having Aperture manage the images in one library. I use a combination of both methods.
That's the "point" of them. Now if you're having some issues using them, or it you're experiencing unusual behavior that's a different topic. I round trip to Photoshop (less and less with 2.1 and the new plug-ins) with my referenced images without the problems you describe. Once I've made my edits in Photoshop and save the image, when I return to Aperture the image appear next to the original, in a stack, displaying the edits I performed in Photoshop. Additionally the new image is stored in the same location as my referenced image.
Why you're not seeing this I'm not certain. There can't be a stack of one image. What can happen if you have a smart album for example, or the search field set to display only 5 star rated images, is that the photo from a stack that meets that criteria will show up in the browser. It will also show the stack number. However, if no other images in the stack meet the criteria of the search, they will not display even if you click on the stack. So it will seem like there is a stack of one image since you can display only that one image. This only happens if you've got a filter of some kind in effect.
I also don't have the problems with thumbnails you describe, and I use Aperture daily with thousands of images. I would suggest rebuilding your library as a first step (hold down the command-option key at launch).
