Keywords from previous import lost

In prior versions, LR facilitated importing images from multiple cards by retaining the previous settings in the import dialog. In version 3.all, it clears out the keywords section. This means you have to retype all those keywords, with every single card. I much prefer the behavior in the prior two versions. I have not seen anywhere to set this as an option. Does this mean that the LR development team intended this behavior, or is it a bug? If this behavior is intentional, PLEASE give us the option to retain the previous settings in keywords.
And while you are fixing things, the default "start number" in the file renaming section of the dialog should be one more than the last number used during the prior import. Otherwise you need to go to the last directory and check the last number generated on the previous import. This is silly; calculating the next correct "start number" is precisely the sort of thing that computers can do without human intervention, and given that LR is touted as a workflow solution, it should be included.

All you can do is what I did, submit a bug report. I hate that it clears the "last used" as well.  In my case, some of the time it even forgets where the import directory was... sigh.
So, it's work arounds until someone figures out that keeping the last used, etc, could be a good thing and puts it back.  Adding your own bug reports will raise it a bit higher in the priority list to get it seen.
Cheers!

  • Import only new clips from previously-imported Mini DV tape

Is there a way to import only the new clips that have been captured since the last import when a Mini DV (tape-based) camcorder is the source?
I’m using a iMovie 8.0.3 with my Canon Elura 100 and it imports clips fine in Automatic mode when I’m capturing the whole tape. However, if I’ve already imported part of the tape before, iMovie appears to re-import all of the previous clips plus the new ones. And, I’m also now in a situation where it doesn’t seem to have imported the new clips from a previously used tape that I started to tack new clips onto the end of.
I don’t get enough time to sit in front of iMovie to sort out what’s going on, so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

So there’s no way to use the Automatic mode, and for iMovie to skip over already-imported clips? Or recognize that a clip has been imported already, and prompt whether to continue to actually import it or not?
I ask merely because, given the length of a DV tape, this kind of thing probably happens regularly. And iPhoto, for example, understands when images have previously been imported.
If there is no such feature, I’m willing to submit it as a feature request. However, given the direction DV tape is going (despite its benefits), I don’t see this as something that will be implemented. All the new media have random access.

  • Moving to Aperture 3 from IDimager - Importing XMP hierarchial keywords

I am interesting in migrating from IDimager, a Windows application, to a native Mac application. I really like how Aperture 3 functions. But a really big issue is getting my keyword structure from IDimager into Aperture 3.
I successfully exported the IDimager catalog and imported it into Aperture 3 keywords. The result is my existing hierarchy of keywords is preserved and maintained in Aperture 3. Awesome, so far...
When I import my images into Aperture 3 however, all nesting is lost. Instead Aperture 3 duplicates all keywords at the top level. This is really disappointing.
I do not have Lightroom nor Lightroom files to test, but I tried exporting a Lightroom compatible XMP format. No go either. It creates, what I presume to be non-standard, XMP information which does convey the structure of keywords. But I can only assume that Aperture 3 ignores that valuable information.
Further, there does not seem to be a practical way to fix my keyword structure. The import of the images leaves me with hundreds of top level keywords that not clutter the keyword HUD. Removing those keywords also removes them from the images. So there seems to be no solution other then apply keywords from scratch. My library is not all that big, some 7,000 images, but I make very extensive use of keywords for many different purposes. So images typically have about 10 keywords plus most of their parent keywords. If there is no solution to automate the import, I am sorry to say, but I cannot see how I will be able to switch to Aperture 3.

IDImager allows for Keywords to be written in hierarchical format. This means each individual keyword includes the parent keywords like this: "Others|Import|2009|2009-02-22". The only debate in my mind is about what will be more time consuming, writing and debugging a script to have exiftool extract the keywords and apply them hierarchical, or doing this task manually.
From playing with the Aperture trial I deducted that making changes to keywords in the keyword HUD applies these changes to all images. Changing the "fred" keyword to "Freddy" will update all images that have the original "fred" keyword applied.
We'll see. I am certainly not new to programming but have not used AppleScript before. Am still searching for a comprehensive guide and scripting examples that would help in pulling this off. But as I get closer to having the pre-processing outside of Aperture done for all of my images and very little accomplished in terms of the script I am leaning towards manually fixing my keywords.

  • Importing keywords from stock photography sites

We purchase a lot of images from stock photography sites, such as Shutterstock and iStockphoto.
We have been using a software called QPict to catalogue the images. QPict is no longer supported.
We'd like to shift to Lightroom or possibly Bridge. Is there a way to automatically import the images along with their keywords from those sites?
In QPict, I've had to find an image, go to the site, copy out the keywords and paste along the image in the catalog. Very tedious process, especially that QPict had limitations as to the number of keywords per image that you could import. Took forever just to catalogue a few dozen photos. We have thousands.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. For the life of me, I cannot find any help in Google or any forums I've visited.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi
I try to give you few brief answers.
    1) I have almost 1000 keywords (including synonyms) and I don't have problems. But at least some previous versions of Lightroom were unusable with controlled vocabularity keyword set which contains something like 11000 keywords. I haven't recently heard any comments about large quantity of keywords. So someone with more experience should comment on that.
    2) You can import keyword hierarchy to Lightroom from text file. File should have keywords in tab intented hierarchy, with one keyword in line. If I recollect correctly the file should be in UTF-8 character set (this is important if you have some non ascii characters in keywords). Synonyms are marked with {} and keywords that are not exported with [].
    3) Synonyms are written as keywords when images are exported. As far as I know current search tool does not support synonyms (yes, this is weird).
Hope this helps at least a bit.

  • LR2 and importing keywords from CS3 Bridge

I've just started a 30 day LR trial and need some guidance, please, on successfully importing keywords from CS3 Bridge so that the complete heirarchy survives intact.
I've just imported the keywords to LR2 and found the heirarchy is mostly destroyed.
Also, Bridge allows you put a keyword inside "[ ]"  (square brackets) if you want/need that word in the heirarchy but do not want it to be copied to the metadata.  After importing to LR2, all the square brackets have gone.
I've imported some photos into LR2 but, when I look at their keywords, all the words which were within square brackets (and so not visible in the metadata in Bridge) are now visible in the metadata in LR2.
Anyone found a solution to this, please?  I really don't want to have to re-keyword everything if there's another way.
    Thanks,  John Walmsley

    Ginger
I ran a test for you. Started up my old computer that has windows XP OS. Took a photo and added a keyword by right clicking as your previous post outlined. I then looked at photo in Bridge CS3 on old machine. There was no keyword. Copied to flash drive and looked at photo on Vista computer with Bridge CS3. Still no keyword. Ran a search on Vista advanced for keyword on flash drive, and it gave a hit.
So my conclusion is that the keyword is there, but Bridge does not read the XP generated keyword. It will read a keyword generated by same method in Vista. Don't know what else to suggest. Don't have CS4 so do not know it that works or not.
Perhaps with these clues someone else can figure it out.
    Good luck

  • LR is using meta data from previous edited photos on new imports

LR is using meta data from previous edited photos on new imports-
When I am importing new photos to a new catalog LightRoom gave all the photo settings that I had used on a previous catalogs photo I had to delete the catalog because I could not find an answer anywhere. Tried the deleteing and importing 3 times with same result.
Once I did Start another new catalog and pressed reset on everything I could find it worked.
What can I do if this happens again? Anybody know what setting that involves?

On the right side of the Import screen, there's a heading "Apply during import". (If it doesn't show, right-click on the panel on the right and choose it from the menu.) One of its sub-fields is Metadata. That field and the Keywords field below it, I think are "sticky". You need to make sure that they contain the metadata that you want applied in your current import.
It's almost always a bad idea to delete your catalogue or re-import images. Both those things fall at the very end of possible remedies because they cost you a lot of work, and there are almost always cheaper ways of solving your problem.

  • ITunes 11 previously imported a video file, which I loaded on to my iPod Nano, but I removed the file from the iTunes library and now it won't (re-)import the same video. Any thoughts on why not?

iTunes 11 previously imported a video file, which I loaded on to my iPod Nano, but I removed the file from the iTunes library and now it won't (re-)import the same video.
I'm using 2 PCs, each with video files (.MP4) on their respective hard drives, and also one external drive with other video files on that I move between the two devices.
iTunes on one PC will (sometimes!) let me add video content from the external hard drive, which is clearly iTunes-compatible, because I can then copy it over to my iPod Nano. On the other PC, I couldn't load that same video from the external hard drive. But if I copied that same video on to the PC's internal hard drive first, then iTunes would let me import it. That was yesterday - now iTunes is refusing to load any files from the internal or external hard drive(s).
    Any thoughts or suggestions, please?

So I tried copying the files from the external hard drive to a USB drive. I could import the video files from the USB drive!
So then I tried importing the same files on to my PC's internal hard drive again. I could import the video files from the internal hard drive!
So then I tried to import the very same files that failed to load on the very same PC previously. I could now import them!
I still can't import from the external hard drive directly, though.
I really don't think I like the process of importing things into iTunes very much... any suggestions on what's causing any of this behaviour would be very interesting.

  • Importing Keywords from CS2 to CS4

I notice in CS4 Extended (Trial) that one can import Keywords. I still have CS2 will all it's files on the same system and was wondering what the name of the CS2 file is that I can import existing Keywords from.
    Thank you!

Personally,I don't think is a strange question, mainly because I will be in the same position soon. If I understand correctly, you are concerned that you wont be able to install CS4 64bit if you have to install CS2 first. Is that correct?
If so, I'm in the same boat. I assume that it will be possible as it is possible to run CS2 in 64bit mode.

  • Importing Keywords from Excel into Lightroom (XMP)

My current photo log is in Excel. I'm thinking of moving to Lightroom. Does anyone know if there would be a programmatic way to import keywords from an Excel file, and avoid having to manually apply keywords to each imported image? The data in my Excel file provides a perfect (nearly perfect?) correspondence between keyword and image file name. I know next to nothing about XMP, but I could get some help if I knew this was possible. Thanks!

Garry, try this: Take one image in LR, apply some metadata and use "Metadata > XMP > Export XMP Metadata to File". Examine this xmp file to see what it has to look like.

  • Importing keywords from iPhoto

I would like to import my current keywords from iPhoto to Aperture. What is the best way to do this, and then to keep them synched?
    Thanks -

You're on the right track, but you'll need iPhoto Library Manager to do it. It's the only way to move files from one library to another while maintaining metadata. So, assign all the keywords to one pic, then transfer it to the new library using iPLM. It's a $20 shareware, and all round good app. You can read about it here:

  • Importing keywords from external file

Is there any way to import keywords from a text file into Aperture to automatically tag images? For example, if I have a spreadsheet with a list of names and numbers can I enter the image numbers in the spreadsheet (on the iPhone) and then import that data to the Aperture album with the images. Kinda like a merge of the data.

  • Importing Keywords from Lightroom/Elements?

Recently upgraded from Elements to Lightroom/CS5.  Keywords from elements useable in Lightroom but lightroom/Elements Keywords not showing up in Bridge.  Is there a way to import them.  If not, this really handcuffs the switch to Bridge.  Any and all help appreciated.

Lightroom and Elements use a database to store metadata.  Bridge and many other progams store the info on the image.
In Elements you want to click file/write keywords tag and properties info to photo.  Then you can read it in Bridge.
