Keywords imported from PSE 5.0 (Poor User Experience)

When moving to Lightroom, I successfully imported my substantial catalog (6,000 images) from Photoshop Elements 5.0. Keyword importing doesn't seem to be quite right, however. I've noticed the following two problems.
1. All keywords appear both in their proper hierarchy AND as separate, top level keywords. For example, I have:
Family
Kids
Nick
as well as just:
Nick
All they Nick photos are tagged with both keywords (just "Nick" and "Nick>Kids>Family.")
These keywords seem to be treated by LR as separate keywords. For instance, if I apply "Nick" to a photo, it does not update the photo count for "Nick>Kids>Family." And vice versa.
This is a confusing situation. So it seems that I should delete all of the standalone, top level keywords, like "Nick." Do others agree? Is this a bug in the importing process from PSE 5.0?
2. The hierarchy tags do not seem to update the photo count properly. When I create a parent/child keyword relationship in Lightroom, the addition of a child tag will of course update the count for the parent ("Family" as well as "Nick"). But this does not seem to work with respect to the keyword hierarchies imported from PSE 5.0. So perhaps I should essentially re-create the keyword structure in LR, which wouldn't be that hard to do. (Select "Nick" photos, delete the existing keywords, and create a new "Nick" keyword with the proper parent/child relationships.)
Again, have others seen this behavior? Or am I misunderstanding how this functionality is supposed to work?
I'm running LR 1.3.1 on Windows Vista.
Thanks.

I'm trying the Lightroom trial version and have had very similar issues on my import from Elements 5.02.
I get a Top level tag and a matching one in a tree, event though it is only in the tree in Element Organizer. Some seem to have the identical set of photos, but others like "Emma" (my cat) have 10 photos attached at the top level and 200+ in the tree.
I'm also struggling with using multiple keywords at once like
Jim + Mexico + Lisa
In the tree view I can only select one at a time and when typing into FIND it sometimes narrows the selection drastically for no apparent reason.
Any pointers for someone happy with their Elements Organizer into Lightroom import would be most appreciated.

  • Keyword exporting bug also impacts catalogs imported from PSE 6

    Hi,
I haven't seen any mention of it, but the keyword exporting bug reported for catalogs imported from LR 1.x also impacts catalogs imported from Photoshop Elements 6. i.e. all Keywords imported from my PSE 6 catalog have "Include in export", "Export Containing Keywords", and "Export Synonyms" properties set to false.
I've reported the bug, but as it seems the same as described in KB 405074 (and more importantly, its fix works for formerly PSE catalogs as well!), I'm sure it will be fixed in the next update.

    Thanks,

    Hi Brian,
When I installed the trial for LR2 I was asked whether I wanted to upgrade my existing PSE6 catalog.
Screenshot of this can be found here: http://dawsons.id.au/temp/pse6-to-lr2-catalog.png
That's it. I haven't imported any keywords via any other method.
    Thanks,
    Matt
PS I'm impressed with the level of Lightroom team involvement in these forums. I've been a PSE user for at least 5 years and have never received feedback from that team re posts/support calls/feature request/bug reports. I've been a LR user for about two weeks and I've already had Tom and yourself reply to my posts. You've got to be happy with that!

  • Database import from PSE -half success

    Hello,
I've just finished a mid-size database import from PSE to LR (32.000 mixed images).
    First observations:
    1. Unsuccessful migration of TAG hierarchy : some of the tags keep the hierarchy structure of PSE, most become flat. a given tag is divided sometimes in tow keywords (same keyword title!). a part is flat keyword, a part is child keyword
    2. complete disappearing of the PSE collections ! Oops
    3. Successful migration of the favorites(stars)
    4. Issues with dates (Creation date, capture date, etc.) - OOPS
Overall for me this is a failure !
Dommage as french are saying :(
LR can be very useful, but only if it understands other Adobe application wihtout faults !
overall comparison on performance : PSE is unsupportably slow at this size for basic file action (delete from catalog, file delete), LR performs better, meanwhile the on-the-fly preview generation is slower.

You never assign a value (True/False) to your function (ImportDBData). I would suggest googling "VBScript Function Syntax" to get a better understanding if you don't understand my answer.

  • Poor user experience after WAAS Installation

    Hi,
I have got the the network setup as follows:
Branch:Users are connected to a Cisco 3750 switch with single vlan and have a single gateway router with two wan links.
WAE appliance is connected to the same vlan with the users and the intercept/return method is WCCP gre.
Datacenter: Each of the WAN Links are connected to two separate cisco 7600 routers at the datacenter. and the servers are behind these routers.
The WAE appliance is connected to the two 7600s and generic gre is used for interception/return between the WAAS appliance and the
                      Cisco 7600.
After Inserting WAAS in path of the User traffic, i get all the nice compression details on the CM indicating that the WAAS workss fine but the user experience is even worse. I have also ensured that no link in the path is on Half duplex, what else could be causing a degrade of the perfrmance.
Please find attached configs template for the devices in this setup.

    Hi,
We had the same issue for one of our site, that was speed problem.
The WAE was in 100/full the 3com switch was in 100/full.
After change it to auto/auto in WAE and switch everything was ok.

  • How to move my photos from PC to Mac (just imported from PSE!)?

I just loaded up LR1.0 and imported my library (about 15000 images) from PS Elements 4.0. Huzzah! It worked perfectly, including all keywords and even the keyword hierarchy. So far, life is very good, indeed.
Now, there are two more steps, and I'm not sure how to take them. I want to convert all the .nef's (about 7500) to .dng's, and move the whole thing to my new MacPro. I'd like to archive the .nef's, but then get them out of my main tree.
    How should I do this?
I can think of a couple methods, but I don't know which will work better.
    1. Write the metadata to all files, which will create lots of xmp's including my keywords, etc. Then archive the whole tree, and convert to dng, deleting the .nef's. Then move the photo tree to the mac and re-import into LR there. Since I haven't done any LR developing / editing that I care about, I guess I won't lose anything important, right? The keywords should be there, though not the keyword hierarchy.
    2. Move the library as well as the photos. Then do the dng conversion on the mac. If it works, this would be better because I wouldn't lose my keyword hierarchy. Is this possible?
Once I move, I don't expect to move back to PC, so I don't need to retain interoperability.

I don't know. Copy the parent folder and the Library file. Don't bother moving the previews LR will regenerate them.
If Lightroom can't find them a ? will be beside them. Click it and then point to the file. Lightroom should find the rest, but you may need to do it for each folder..

  • Keywords import from other software

Right now I've most of photos sorted in Extensis Portfolio and I'd like to import the keywords for the photos into lightroom. There is no way right now how to import keywords for photos in LR from external source. It could be an easy import script that matches keywords against filename.
I had a look at the LR DB and did not find a place where keywords and their structure was saved, otherwise I could make a little plugin myself and let it use by others, anyone knows where these keywords are stored?
    David.

You can get a list of images and their keywords from the Lr database with the following query:
SELECT b.absolutePath, b.originalFilename AS ImageFileName, c.Name AS Keyword
    FROM AgLibraryTagImage a LEFT OUTER JOIN Adobe_ImageFiles b ON a.image = b.image LEFT OUTER JOIN AgLibraryTag c ON a.tag = c.id_local
    WHERE a.tagKind LIKE '%Keyword%'
I would like to be able to export/import keywords (e.g., from an Lr 1.4.1 catalog to an Lr 2.0 catalog) and I am hoping someone comes up with a solution. There seems to be no way to migrate just the keyword tags via xmp sidecar files. You get all or nothing that way.

  • Keywords Imported from iPhoto

When I initially moved my images from iPhoto to Aperture, I imported all the keywords I had been using into Aperture in a folder called "iPhoto". Is there an easy way to get rid of this folder and keep my photos keyworded as they now are without having to reassign these keywords to my whole library?
    Thanks -
    Dudley Warner

    Hello!
Naturally, after I post here, the latest import worked.  All keywords seem to be on my photos (along the bottom of my photos).
I imported the photos via Aperture "import" function, and chose "import iPhoto library," "leave in current location." --  The first two times there were no keywords along the bottom of my photos in Aperture, nor in the metadata for any of my photos.
My latest trick was finding the keyword list in Aperture - they are in the Keyword HUD under "iPhoto" and then nested down in there.
A follow up:  My iPhoto library seems to be complete in Aperture, but Aperture continues "Processing...." with no further details.  Any clue what it's doing?  Thanks for your quick reply.  //Steve

  • After import from dump, i must provide user in order to access tables

    Hello,
I fully imported to oracle enterpirze 11.2.0.1.0, a dmp file extracted from oracle 9.2 DB.
I performed the import logged in as sys as sysbba.
After an initial error of 'missing user' (sth like that), I created also a user like the one I wanted to import and then the import was succesful (with a few errors)
After the import I can see all the tables. Thw owner of the tables (checked from all_all_tables) is the schema I created, but i cannot perform a simple select neither from the sys or from the new schema, unless i provide the schema name.
    For example:
"select * from mytable" is not working,
    I have to query:
    "select * from schema_name.mytable"
Why did this happen? Can it be corrected?

in few words what was done:
    - export schema from 9 user A
    - create user B in 11
    - import dump of schema A into new created schema B
then you connected to 11g as user B and tried to query it's schema
    Am I right?
With which instrument have you performed exp/imp? Can you provide exact commands?

  • Users are not importing from BW to bobj

    Hi Experts,
I am working on bobj 4.0 and bw 7.0 i am facing an issue while importing users from bw .i can import roles but i can not  see the users .In Bw the roles have users but when i import them to bobj  i can see only roles but not users ?????

    Hello,
I know this post is from almost 2 years back.
But we are running into an issue in BOBJ 4.1 SP2 with role and user import.
When we import roles from BW to BOBJ from SAP Authentication. All the roles are imported fine.
The user gets created in BOBJ when the user logs into Portal via Launchpad for the firs time.
Lets say we have 5 roles in BW that the user is part of, and when we import the 5 roles, we do not see the user as a member of the 5 roles in BOBJ. But the user is seen in only one role.
We do not see user in any other 4 roles imported from BW, even though the user is in those roles in BW. This causes a problem as the roles are applied to different folders in BOBJ and User now cant see the objects attached to the 4 roles that the user is part of.
We even tried scheduling a role and alias import from User Update tab in the SAP Authentication in CMC. That did not help either. I thought this should atelast synch up everything between BW and BOBJ.
    Any thoughts on this please
    Thank you
    Suman

  • Imported from iphoto want a do-over

Purchased a new iMac.  Transfered my old iPhoto library (thousands of photos) to iPhoto on new iMac because I wanted to transfer those from iPhoto to Elements 11 which I just purchased.  My plan was to use Elements to organize and edit.   I used the import from iphoto option in Elements to import my iPhoto library.  None of the original dates came with my photos!
I read another forum post here which discussed why this occurred.  I think I understood that information but I now need to know the quickest way to remove all those folders of pictures that have incorrect dates from Elements so I can try again.  Can someone please direct me as to how to start over?  Thank you!

Barbara - I created a folder and put all the photos into it so they are not associated with iPhoto anymore.  Then I selected import from PSE Organizer and chose the pictures that I wanted to import.  They import with the "Date Modified" as the original date and "Date Created" as today's date or the import date.  So, your directions worked and I'm on my way to getting something done, finally.  Thank you!
My final thoughts:  I'm very disappointed with the way the "import from iphoto" option works.  I don't understand why the program wasn't designed to bring along the date from the exif data.  Organizing a lifetime of family photos greatly depends on the photo's original date.

  • PSE 13 "Import Keyword Tags From File" Fails

Whenever I try to do the above command, it fails. As shown in the attached figure it gets to 9%. Does anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot this error?
    Thanks in advance.

is there a way to import tags from PSE 12
The PSE 12 Organizer and LR 5 use different file formats for exporting and importing keyword hierarchies. PSE uses XML format, while LR 5 uses a tab-separated format.  If you're a programmer or technically minded, you could convert from one to the other using your favorite scripting language.
But the approach suggested by dj_paige can be modified to accomplish what you want without scripting, by copying the keyword hierarchy from the "upgraded" LR catalog that was created from your PSE catalog to your "good" LR catalog:
    1. Make a manual backup of your "good" LR catalog: Lightroom Help | Back up a catalog.
    2. In LR, open the catalog that you created previously by upgrading (converting) the PSE catalog -- you can usually get to that catalog by doing File > Open Recent.
    3. Go to grid view in the Library by doing Window > Library followed by View > Grid (usually you're already in Library grid view, but just in case...)
    4. Make sure the Keyword List panel is showing on the right by doing Window > Panels > Keyword List.
    5. You should see the keyword hierarchy from your PSE catalog.  If you don't, stop and post a screen shot of the entire LR screen.
    6. Do Metadata > Export Keywords to export those keywords as a LR-format text file.
    7. Open your "good" LR catalog by doing File > Open Recent.
    8. Do Metadata > Import Keywords and select the file you exported in step 6.
    9. All the keywords that were exported in step 6 will be added to the current catalog, and there will be duplicate keywords if there were already keywords of the same name in the catalog.  Those new keywords will not be attached to any existing photos in the current catalog.

  • Howcan I import tags from PSE 10 into PSE 12?

I've got the albums in PSE 12 but I have much organizational information in the PSE 10 Keyword tags and don't know how to import them.  Thanks in advance.  Phil Young

    Hi,
If you simply want the list of tags without any association to media, you can try this:
Go to PSE10 catalog,Click on the drop down available adjacent to + button in keyword tags and Select Save Keyword Tags to File
Specify the destination where you want the file to be saved.
Now come back to EO12, open the drop down list available with keyword tags and click on Import Keyword tags from file.
Choose the file you saved earlier and import it.
The tags should be imported now. But please note, assosciation with media will not be there.
If you want assosciation as well, you need to convert the catalog in PSE12.
    Thanks,

  • Importing keyword list from Photoshop CS1 is possible

Amongst all this gloom on a more positive note I thought people might be interested to know that I have successfully managed to import my long keywords list from Photoshop CS1 into the keywords hud. It is fiddly and I'm sure there must be a more graceful way of doing it but I got there in the end.
There are two buttons bottom right of the keyword hud - import and export - for which I have found no documentation in the manual however I tried export and it exported the keyword list as a text document. If you find your Photoshop CS keyword pref file which is by default kept in : user name / library / preferences / Adobe Photoshop CS settings / Keywords.psp, you can open it with text edit. You then have to fiddle around with the formatting which I did by copying it into a word processing app and using find and replace so that I ended up with a tabbed list which followed the same format as the exported aperture text list. I then pasted it into the aperture list and after a bit more fiddling around was then able to use the import button on the hud to bring in my entire list as it appeared in Filebrowser.
    Fingers crossed!
    Best wishes
