Keywords in CS5

Is there a limit to the number of keywords/phrases and page descriptions can you put in the keyword function in CS5?   My site offers a range of services and we are targeting a wide range of areas and cities potentially adding up to 100s of keyword permutations and variations.   We also need to direct potential visitors to the homepage only for them to then decide where they want to go so we cannot split these keywords between pages.     Also, how does this keyword function work alongside SEO activity (metatags/keywords etc) done within the coding of the site itself?   Thanks.

CS4 and CS5 use different cache systems.  For a serch to work you will have to build the CS5 cache.  Do a search with the box checked search non-indexed files.

  • Search for CS4 Keywords in CS5

I've recently upgraded to PhotoShop/Bridge CS5.  Most of my keywords were applied to files with CS4.  Now that I'm using CS5, searches don't return all items unless I've actually gone into each directory and CS5 has extracted the files.  Is there any shorter way for CS5 to recognize those CS4 keywords or am I stuck opening each and every directory and letting CS5 extract those images?

  • How to Replace All the Bridge CS6 Stock Keywords With Bridge CS5 Keywords

I have CS6 working in a different computer than the one that houses CS5. Bridge CS6 can read CS5 keywords when it opens an "old" photo but it has none of its own (besides the stock ones that came with the program). How can I replace all the stock CS6 keywords with the keywords from CS5?

Have you tried the Import/Export options from the tiny menu at the top-right of the Keywords panel?

  • Elements or Light Room

I'm trying to determine which would be the best way for me to proceed. I'm looking for a way to manage my photos (over 22,000) with keywords and file names. I am an Elements 7 user but I'm having some problems using the keywords in CS5. Also if I delete pictures in CS5,  I have to make a lot of adjustments in Elements . I have read the information regarding Lightroom and wonder if this is the way to go for me. It appears to be more compatible with Photoshop.
    Any suggestions??

Both Elements and PSE work best if you organize and manage your collection by keywords, and not by file names. Although you can certainly go down that path if you really want to, in which case if you must use file names, Lightroom offers slightly better tools, and fewer bugs.

Not enough information for me to understand what problems you are having, so I can't advise on this issue.
Also if I delete pictures in CS5,  I have to make a lot of adjustments in Elements .
I fail to see an issue here. In fact, I don't really understand completely, what do you mean "delete pictures in CS5"? CS5 is an editor, not a file manager.

Neither Lightroom nor Elements has an advantage in its compatibility with Photoshop. Both allow you to use CS5 as an extra editor.
Both PSE and Lightroom let you do what you have described, if used properly. If you could provide more details about your needs, maybe one program or the other will become the better choice.

  • Will Elements or Light Room work for an old copy of CS?

I am running windows 8 and tried to install an old copy of photoshop cs. I got an error message that I needed to already have installed a copy of photoshop 5.0 or later. I no longer have my elements software so I cant re install it. Can I just get a new elements or light room and then be able to install cs?

  • Keywords problem using Adobe Bridge CS5

    Hi,
I've a great many photos in numerous folders all found under one master folder.
Don't know if this is a flaw in the program or a fault on my part, but what I'm trying to do is keep my keyword list as I continue to add to it...regardless of when I happen to come back to Bridge...'and regardless of what photo I select.
Problem is, when I close out of Bridge and come back to a particular image, Bridge will show me only a portion of all the keywords I'd entered previously. My workaround involves browsing around to older images which happen to have all the keywords listed. (not meaning that all those keywords are applied to that photo, BUT, they're available). After doing so, the full list of keywords I've added in the past will now be available to any other image I select thereafter.
I hope I explained that correctly.
I always figured Adobe Bridge to be pretty intuitive and self explanatory but just now had a look at the CS5 Manual just to be sure I wasn't overlooking something. I couldn't find a solution.
Would appreciate any help in this regard.
    Thanks in advance.

Glad the problem is clear now
When I say at their disposal, I mean keywords from which to be applied to each file. When you create a brand new file, from where would I get the keywords? I certainly don't expect to enter each one individually over and over again for every file. At their disposal in my book would mean: available as a keyword to be applied to the image.
In the Bridge book this would mean they should be present in the keyword list that shows in the keyword panel. Like Curt stated the keywords that are already saved to a file but are not persistent to the list show in italic, usually at the bottom of the list under 'other keywords'.
When you need to save keywords to files (whether brand new or old) you only have to select the files you want to have those certain keywords and put a checkmark in front of the keyword from the keyword panel (persistent or italic both work but for the italic to show you have to have files with those keywords in the folder as you have found out yourself by now) and let bridge finish its task to save the data to the files.
You can create your own keyword list on the go when working and use the menu or right mouse menu in the keyword panel to create a new keyword or nested sub keyword. If you have created this word it will stay present in this list (persistent) but you can also create or edit your list in a simple text editor. A main keyword starts at the beginning of the line, hit return for a new line and 1 x tab to create a sub keyword to nest in the parent. Further nesting in done by return and an extra tab for each nested keyword.
You can also export the current keyword list using the little menu icon top right to the keyword panel and choose export. Save it with a proper name and open this file in a text editor to get the idea of tabs and lines.
Sadly enough I don't know a way to export non persistent keywords (italic) but maybe the scripting has a solution for you, if you want to make it persistent to the list you have to do so one by one.
If you have created your own keyword tree it is also wise to every now and then back it up using the export function. You can also import a new list either to add to your existing words or to clear current and use only the new one.
btw, going back to what you mentioned originally in as far as bridge needing time to apply a keyword and finish its task...that doesn't even exist on my end. I'm running off 16 gigs of memory and have allotted a huge number for bridge to work with.
But still, multitasking is not a Bridge gem, if you start assigning keywords from the keywords panel after a few seconds the arrow starts rotating and you have to wait for it being finished, no matter what specs you have (and I use 32 GB RAM on a 12 core processor using SSD…) as soon as the first task starts the keywords that are getting applied need time to save to the files. If you start a new job before it is finished only half of the keywords will be saved.

  • Where is "adobe bridge keywords.xml" located on mac (using CS5)?

I just installed Photoshop to work from home, and I'm trying to set up my (rather extensive) keywords list. Other discussions have identified the place for this file as '~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Bridge CS5' but that directory does not exist for me - the Adobe directory is missing. There is a 'Bridge CS5.1 Extensions' directory, but there is no place within it for this file.
Does anyone know where I should put this file?
    Thanks!

You are looking in the wrong library, that file is in the system library at root lever. You have to look in your user account library (the ~ means your 'user name').
Some other observations, You say you have CS5 but Bridge CS5.1 Extensions points to CS5.5. Not a big deal but that means you should also have a Bridge CS5.1 folder in the App support at user level.
(It is a bit of a mix up with all different versions of apps in the CS suite. PS is at number 12 and comes with CS5. Bridge is at version 4 in CS5. They made an update for the whole Adobe suite and called it CS5.5. Inhere PS 12.1 and Bridge 4.1. The call some parts CS5.1. Hope you still with me here... :-0 )
And I suspect that you are already on OSX 10.7 Lion and that means by default your user library is hidden. To show it can be done in multiple ways, fastest way is to google on user library and OSX lion

  • How do I migrate my exhaustive keyword list from my previous version of PS, CS5 to CS6?

I upgraded to PS CS6 and failed to export the exhaustive keyword list I had created by adding personal keywords to the "Controlled Vocabulary Keyword Catalog" I was using in CS5. I thought I'd be able to open my previous version of CS5 to export that catalog, but every attempt to open PS CS5 or the Bridge CS5 defaults to CS6.
I would love to go back and open my previous version to export that catalog rather than trying to recreate it from a new Controlled Vocabulary Keyword Catalog download.
Thank you in advance for any help you may provide.

Thank you for your help, but I found a file called Adobe Bridge Keywords.xml that only contained the default keywords that are contained in the startup version of PS. I didn't find the exhaustive list that I created in CS5 Bridge. Is there another place that I could find that entire list including the heirarchy?
Or is there a way to open the old version of Adobe PS Bridge CS5?
    Thanks Curt Y

  • Adding keywords/tagging in bridge CS5

I'm using bridge CS5 on windows xp and 7 (mostly xp).  I'm trying to set up a seachable database of about 63,000 images at work on a server that many people have access to.  I was trying to put keywords on some pictues and it only let me put them on the JPEGS.  Most of the other files were .max and .bmp.  It wouldn't let me open the file info box to enter them, the option was just greyed out.
I was also wondering if anybody knew if setting the location of the cache to a folder on the server on each computer would work well, or if each computer needs to keep it's own searchable cache.
Thank you in advance for any help.

Not an expert on this subject, but before you comit a lot of time on this project in Bridge, explore other options as well, such as digital access management programs.
Bridge is not really set up for Network use although some use it that way.  Also, Lightroom and Photoshop Elements stores the keywords in a database, while Bridge stores it on the image.  Although I have never used the other programs, it seems lke it would be easier to search.

  • Keywords in Bridge CS5 on Mac OSX network issue?

Is there any way for multiple workstations using OSX 10.6.3 to enter keywords using Bridge CS5 to photos residing on a server?  It appears that only one user may make changes or add keywords... the others are relegated to a read only status and cannot add or modify keywords.  If the file is duplicated on the server by another user, the original user is then denied access.  This is a huge issue for our office and our IT person has no clue.  Help please.

  • Keywords in Bridge CS5 & CS6 beta

After I installed Photoshop CS6 beta and opened Bridge CS6 I noted that it had imported a copy of my keywords from Bridge CS5.
However when a new keyword is added in Bridge CS5 it is not added to Bridge CS6….  and new keywords added in Bridge CS6 are not added into Bridge CS5.
Is there a way to sync my keywords in the two versions of Bridge?
Also need to know what will happen when I install the final release version of Photoshop CS6.  Will it import the keywords from my Bridge CS5 or the beta CS6?

Beleive CS5 and CS6 use different cache.  So you will probably have to trash the cache and let it rebuild to so new additons.
Can use Tools/cache/purge cache for xxx folder

  • Bridge CS5 and hierarchical keywords?

    Hi, folks.
Just started using CS5 and I'm in the process of adding some keywords.
I find that when I add a lower-level or subordinate keyword Bridge will not automatically add the upper-level keyword to go with it.
For example, let's say I'm adding location-specific keyword data.  So, I add "San Franciscio" and I would expect "California" to be added because it's the parent keyword.  But this doesn't seem to be happening.
Am I missing some button that says "automatically add parent keyword" or something?
    Thanks,
    Greg
P.S. Oh, and for bonus points, any idea how I grab all the keywords in one image and apply them to another image?  Some sort of a copy-and-dump feature?

    That option is in edit/preferences/keywords.

  • Transfering from PhotoshopCS3 to CS5 Bridge keywording and rating questions?

I have been using my daughter's photoshop CS3 on her computer and have keyworded and star rated most of my photos. She is now leaving home and I am going to purchase CS5 (as she will be taking her computer and the program). How do I transfer all these to the new version of CS5? I have spent soooo much time doing this and don't want to have to redo all the hard work.
I read somewhere that the keywords are embedded in the metadata. If that is so, would I just create the new keywords in the newer version and it will pick them up when I import the photos? I can't seem to find anything about importing star ratings.
Any suggestions???  I don't want to go ahead and purchase the new program until I know if this will work.

Keywords are embedded on the image so it is portable no matter what viewer.  So there should be no problem in switching from CS3 to 5, worked for me.
However, (there always is a however isn't there?) the keyword panel will show italacized keywords meaning they are tempary.  You can right click on the keyword and choose "make persistant".
If you like the keyword structure on your daughters computer click on the arrow in upper right hand corner of the keyword panel and choose Export.  Save it on a flash drive and you will have it for future use.
I think the stars will be OK also.
    Hope this helps.

  • Bridge CS5 Keyword User Info

I am using Bridge CS5 to label almost 100,000 files, mostly jpegs, tifs, psds.
After finishing this project, I am anxious about not having to repeat it. I am looking for information about copying/backing up the work I have done.
I keep 3 separate copies of my photo library on 3 separate, external SATA hard drives. I am performing this keywording on one backup copy. When finished, is there a file or folder that maintains all of the data regarding the keywording that I can copy to the other two hard drives or is the keyword data part of each individual file. If so, I would recopy the entire photo library to the other two hard drives. I am assuming the keywording would then be copied also.
Any suggestions from this forum regarding this project and answers to my specific inquiries would be appreciated.
    John

The keyword directory is kept in user/app data/adobe/bridge/keywords
The keywords themselves are written to the images so you would need to copy the images.  There may be a way to just copy the keywords, but if so it would be a script.
If you use RAW files the keywords may be stored in the XMP file.  Make sure this file is copied with the file or you will loose the edits.  This can be a problem if copying to another drive and you do not have "export cache to folder" turned on.  It is a hidden file and can be turned on and off in View.
Also, be aware that in some cases writing to external drives can be a permisson problem.  If this occurs it can be circumvented by right clicking on Bridge icon and choosing "run as administrator".

  • Bridge in CS5 Mac - newbie trying to keyword my 4000+ photos

I'm an old PC - PS7 user now into Mac and CS5.  I thought I would use Bridge to re-organize and keyword some old photos.  But I am having difficulties.  The keywords I add keep disappearing from the keyword list when I go to a new folder.  I need suggestions for set up.  Must I put everything into one folder to keep my keyword list available so I don't inadventently make variants like 'graffiti' 'street-graffiti" etc.   I see the CS5 help documentation but I can't find the Bridge help/manual.  Can you suggest a book or link for me or a procedure?
    Thanks so much.
    Diane

Look closely at the keywords in the keyword panel.  If they are italicized they are temporary and will disappear when rebooting and perhaps changing folders.
If they are italicized right click on them and choose "make persistent".
    Hope that helps.
