Keywords in FCE

I am in the process of learning FCE after having used iMovie for a few years. In iMovie you could tag video with keywords. Then you could easily search all video via your keywords. This is similar to the ways keywords are also used in Aperture and iPhoto.
Is there anything like this in FCE? I can't find anything about keywords in the documentation or this discussion forum.
Thanks for any assistance.
Jim

Bonjour,
Thanks for your suggestions. I looked at the many comment columns available in FCE. I could use them but they don't let you do what keywords provide in iMovie. In iMovie you can apply keywords to parts of video. For example, I apply keywords based on family members - Jim, Julie, Steve, etc. If I do this to all my video then I can simply select all video with Steve. I have found this useful when working on video projects. There is no limit to the number of keywords you can apply and hence search on.
After more searching it appears there is no similiar feature in FCE. I have decided to import all my 'raw' video into iMovie and apply keywords there. Then do all my video project work in FCE.
Thanks again for you help.

  • Capturing HD video directly into my computer using HDD Cam & FCE 3.5

I have a JVC Everio GZ-HD7. Unfortunately, I didn't realize how "crappy" these HDD cams can be, in time to be able to return it. It records in 4GB sections, which is bad for me because I record at a studio and I can't have songs being cut off all the time and when trying to put together on the timeline on FCE, you notice the millisecond switch from one clip to another, including the audio skip. Now, I had a DV Cam (tape) which came with a program that I connected the cam to the comp using USB and could capture video straight into my computer's HDD. Is there anyway of doing the same thing with my JVC, which has Firewire and USB, using IMovie or FCE, or perhaps even another program (could be cheap too)?? I just need to be able to record entire clips and then edit them in FCE. The GZ-HD7 records in Full HD, 1440CBR and SD, but apparently 1440CBR is the "same thing" as HDV, which should work as if I had a HD Tape Cam. PLEEEASE and help! Ive tried looking everywhere but either I dont type in the correct keywords or there just isnt anything like that. I appreciate it!

i didnt read this topic too much but maybe youre not recording to the hard disk just the external medi drive... anyway... if your having trouble importing your clips... watch this vid...maybe this will help...

  • DAM for video and integrated FCE - opinions?

I have just recently moved up to FCE 4 from iMovie 09, liking it a lot, and still going through Apple Pro Training book of course .
My workflow for pulling clips off of my Canon HF10 AVCHD camcorder is now either:
    (1) if they were short clips with no real need for editing besides joining clips, then I would use the Turbo H.264HD app that came with my Elgato device to read of the HF10, combine clips, and output to AppleTV or other common format. Clips might or might not have gotten archived, and did via iMovie 09 archive feature to Drobo external hard drive(s).
    (2) For more serious work/edits in FCE, use iMovie 09 archive feature to copy entire AVCHD directory from Canon HF10 to Drobo, and then use FCE Log and Transfer to bring in desired clips and copy to dedicated Scratch Disk for FCE. Once complete project is done, then export out from FCE, and probably delete clips off of Scratch Disk, but leave archive copy on Drobo with full AVCHD directory (and MTS files) intact on the Drobo.
The one kind thing I would like is some sort of DAM program to "oversee" the archive clips, with ability to keyword, quickly scan MTS clips, etc. I have found nothing that works. Aperture 3 does need read the AVCHD clips. I even tried the trail version of iDive, but it did not work well at all with the the AVCHD files, and wasn't fond of the UI layout (plus $80).
Does anyone have any other video DAM software recommendations? Or do all if you just ignore your archives once done with your FCE projects?
    -Brian

This function will get you far:
    function goScaledFullScreen()
        var screenRectangle:Rectangle = new Rectangle(0,0,stage.stageWidth,stage.stageHeight);
        stage.fullScreenSourceRect = screenRectangle;
        stage.displayState = StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN;
        stage.quality = StageQuality.BEST;
Independent of your actual monitor resoulution it will scale up any content you might load via loader to the full screen resolution.
It has its limits though: On a Mobile device it won`t reorganize the content if you rotate the device from Landscape to Portrait. Also if you have content that is off-stage you might have to employ masks if the Monitors aspect ratio differs from your presentation one`s.
You can use the Capabilities class to get the actual ResolutionX/ResolutionY of the device that runs your presentation.
You might want to somehow inform your presentation if the resolution gets changed via the Resize Event
If size is not an issue you might prepare your presentation in the best Quality possible (for example HD) because downsizing works in general much better (qualitywise) than upsizing.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Cannot import .mov files into FCE

I bought a new Kodak Zi8 pocket video camera to use to finish a video project because my right hand is in a cast and I cannot use my HD video camera. Unfortunately for me, I have a deadline to meet.
I shot video at 720p and tried to import it into FCE 4.0.1 to edit using Log and Transfer and got the warning message, '"863_0156.MOV" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.' I also shot video at 1080p and, of course, cannot import it into FCE either using Log and Transfer.
I am still a relatively new FCE user and would appreciate any suggestions you can give me. I looked in Tom's book (FCE 4 Editing Workshop)on page 73. Will Quicktime Pro 10 convert the files? If so what is the procedure?
I have seen similar questions in this discussion forum on importing .mov files, but I haven't seen a solution that works for me. How can I convert the .mov files to get Log and transfer in FCE to accept them?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
This pocket camera record H.264. So the material as to be converted to a format supoported natively by FCE as Apple Intermediate Codec 1080. Search this forum with +MPEG streamclip+ keyword.

  • Working with HD video in FCE

    Okay, here goes nothing...
I've worked pretty well with FCE on my Macbook Pro when using SD video. Just got a new Canon Vixia hf11 and all of a sudden, I'm at a loss with trying to work with HD video. From reading through these forums, I think I need to import the video clips into the computer and then convert them somehow into workable clips but I'm not really sure how to go about doing this. Also, I'm not sure that I can actually work with this format, even though both iMovie and FCE say they are ready for HD.
I'm looking to see if somebody can give me a quick rundown of what I will need to do to be able to import and edit my new HD video in the same manner as when I worked with SD.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
FCE 4can handle DV NTSC-PAL, HDV and AVCHD (through Apple Intermediate Codec for HDV and AVCHD). All other formats must be converted to a format supported natively by FCE.
I don't know the spec for your camcorder model but sometimes conversion with Mpeg Streamclip app is the only way to go. Search this forum with +Squared5 MPEG Streamclip+ keywords.

  • HG20 (or HG21) workflow in FCE or FCP?

    Hi.
I'm considering ditching my HV30 for an HG20 or 21 and wanted to know if FCP or FCE can edit the native file format in the timeline without transcoding or having to change sequence settings. I did a keyword search on here for HG21 and HG20 with nothing that really gives me a work flow or can confirm.
I have a PS3 and know it will play the native format from the cam. Ideally, I'd like to Log and Capture the footage, edit it and export as "quicktime movie" (self contained) to keep the the compression cycles down to a minimum and dump to my PS3.
Currently, I capture uncompressed 8bit from HV30 via Blackmagic's Intensity card. I do this to keep the original video quality of my footage. But at 450gb per hour, my project can only be 2 hours max at a time.
My goal is to ditch the Intensity card in hopes of FCP or FCE being able to edit without transcoding first. If that's the case, then I'm where I need to be with only 1 compression cycle happening and that's just in the cam during recording
Thanks for any and all insight!

Thanks for your reply, I never thought about converting straight from the camera but it makes perfect sense.
you said about changing the field dominance to none. Do you mean in MPEG Streamclip? If so when I'm in the MPEG Streamclip - Movie Exporter window and I click on the Field Dominance tab I only get two opions which are 'Upper Field First' or 'Lower field First'.
There is a Deselect for progressive movies: with the options under is as follows:-
    Interlaced Scaling
    Reinterlace Chroma
    Deinterlace Video
The top two are ticked as default, should I untick them and select Deinterlace Video?
    Thanks again

  • Unable to capture DV to FCE, apple support told me a PC is the way forward!

    Hi there
I recently bought an apple imac with a view to editing DV footage taken previously.
I had captured some of these tapes on to a PC before buying an imac. These files I was able to edit on FCE and imovie (once I had transferred them from the pc hard drive). HOWEVER although I could control my DV camera through imovie and FCE none of my old DV tapes could be captured to the imac. An error message states that the frame rate is incorrect.
I have apple care protection and have spent ages trying to get support for this only to be told by apple support that FCE and imovie will not capture my old DV tapes! The support person told me that I should go back to a PC if I want to do the job properly!
Unfortunately I have just spent thousands on this very nice looking imac (and FCE) that is apparently unable to do the most basic capturing. Does anybody have any ideas (other than going back to pc) for getting my DV footage captured?
Needles to say I have found all this incredibly frustrating as a new apple user. Are these sorts of issues common to imacs?
    cheers
    rupert

    Hey Rich,
thanks for getting back to me,
I shot tape previously (in 2000) on a sony mini DV camcorder set to SP. I have since bought a new sony mini DV camcorder (DCR-HC40 NTSC).
With the new camera and a PC I was able to capture my 2000 tapes and edit them. I was also able to edit the earlier footage I had transffered from my PC hard drive to the i-mac on i-movie and FCE.
Unfortunatley everytime I have tried to capture my old tapes directly onto the i-mac I have had the message "preview disabled" from FCE and the following from i-movie:
"The camera is sending half-sized frames, which iMovie can’t accept. Check your camera’s record mode (this is the setting that affects recording quality, which determines the total recording time on a tape). The mode must be set to “SP” or “LP.” If that doesn't help, try removing all the cables and batteries from the camera, wait a minute, replace them, and then reset the date, time, and record mode."
I have spent weeks on the support site and found a thread that recommended re-installing quicktime etc but nothing has worked.
I connect to the i-mac via firewire and am able to control the camera, capture my newly recorded miniDV's (so it is not a problem with the proprietary software application etc) but nothing seems to work for my old tapes.
Apple support told me that apple doesn't do older miniDV's and that a pc would be the only way I could capture my tapes. I couldn't believe it! Unfortuatley I no longer have access to my old pc.
Any ideas? Is there any other way of getting DV onto my i-mac?
And thanks for your interest in my problem here

  • Easy way to add a single keyword to an image?

I just organized a bunch of photos I took at a birthday party, and ran into some <br />awkwardness when keywording.  Hopefully it's just user ignorance, but if not, <br />maybe someone can offer a workaround.<br /><br />I did the import with no keywords, because I wasn't thinking.  Once I'd done <br />that, I selected all images in the "Last Import", hit Ctrl-K, and typed Birthday <br />(which is one of my standard keywords).  Then I deselected all images and <br />started doing selective keywording.  That's where it started getting awkward.<br /><br />I had several shots that had my son in them, so I selected all of them and hit <br />Ctrl-K.  This put my cursor in the keyword box in the right-side panel, with <br />Birthday highlighted.  I hit <End>, then typed comma and MySonsName.  No problem <br />so far.<br /><br />I delselected the shots and selected the ones that had my daughter in them.  The <br />right-side keyword panel now showed something like "Birthday*, MySonsName*".  I <br />wasn't sure whether I could just add MyDaughtersName to the images without <br />actually adding MySonsName to all selected images (even those without my son in <br />them).  That's the awkward part.<br /><br />What I found was that in order to add a single keyword to a bunch of images at <br />once, I had to enable Keyword Stamping and use that.  An alternative was to "Set <br />Keyword Shortcut", enter the keyword, select the images I wanted, and then use <br />"K" to add the shortcutted keyword to the images.<br /><br />Is there any way to simply say "add this keyword to all selected images" in one <br />atomic action?  In other words, hit a keystroke, type the keyword, hit Enter, <br />and it's now applied to all selected images.<br /><br />-- <br />Rob Freundlich<br />"Males ae biologically driven to go out and hunt giraffes." - Newt Gingrich<br />"Some folks you don't have to satirize, you just quote 'em." - Tom Paxton

  • How can I convert from color balance in FCE to color balance in FCPX?

Let me start off by saying that I've been having an issue with a project in Final Cut Express - a project I'd put a lot of time into and thought I was finished with. Before continuing on, I encourage you to take a look at my other thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18702933?ac_cid=op123456#18702933
Realizing that there may be no one who can walk me through fixing my project as is, I decided to download a trial version of Final Cut Pro X and see if I could replicate my project there and have more success (after all, it was only a matter of time before I switched anyway).
So, in my original project in FCE, I keyed a lot of frames with different color balances. I downloaded the Ripple Training color balance effect to do just that, but the sliders are set up differently. In FCE, they range from -1 to 1. In FCPX, they range from 0 to 1. I'm wondering how I can conveniently convert the values from FCE to FCPX. Being terrible at math has made this much harder.
Just by drawing a diagram, like the following, I can figure out the basics:
    FCE
    [-1]-----[-.5]-----[0]-----[.5]-----[1]
    is equal to:
    FCPX
    [0]-----[.25]-----[.5]-----[.75]-----[1]
Since I have very specific numbers, not all of which can be easily converted using a basic diagram like the one above, I definitely need some help here. For example, one of the values in FCE is .77. What would that be equal to in FCPX? It's probably something simple, but like I said, I'm stupid when it comes to math.
Thanks to anyone who can provide me with some help here, although I still hope that I'll end up having no reason to redo everything in FCPX.

Well, the "math answer" is .885…but I'm afraid that's not likely to be of much help. FCPX and FCE have absolutely nothing in common, including filters land color correction. So even if you sent the time comverting all your numeric values, I'm guessing you'll wind up with a mess and be very frustrated with all the time wasted in the workaround.
If I read your original FCE thread correctly, I if it were my project., I'd do a test on a short clip in X to see whether yoi can the effects and quality you expect. If you can, great.  Build you project from scratch and learn a new NLE at the same time.
    Good luck.

  • Lightroom Upgrade at a client - sucess? - keyword problem deal breaker

    Hi
Just a small report, on how upgrading a client's LR 2 catalog went.
Background: The client is a professional photographer specialized on garden photography. Her customers are gardening and lifestyle magazines who publish her photos regularly as illustrations to various articles. She has a professional Canon EOS 1Ds MK III equipment and shoots exclusively raw. In a shoot around 300 to 1000 images are shot. The Lightroom catalog has around 20,000 images currently.
In Lightroom she uses mostly DAM and some basic development features, images are delivered either as raw of as JPEG images to the clients. Keywording is especially important. She has an extensive hierarchical list of plants most of them multiword keywords with spaces, and lots of other keywords indicating if images were sent to clients and other stuff.
The upgrade went just very well. I exported the catalog to a new intermediate catalog without previews, installed LR3 and imported this intermediate catalog into LR3 generating new previews from scratch. The hardware is modest, and some functional tests (especially switching images in develop, spot tool, and adjustment brushes) revealed that everything performs well enough.
Then she asked me where she would have benefits from using the new version. And then I told the whole benefit story, which can be read everywhere.
    - New process version, better details and noise reduction. She asked where she can see it? Hmm, I switched to 1:1 view changing the process versions, not really much to see on Canon 1Ds Mk III files. Even with noisier files, it was hard to tell, what has actually changed. So only a 4:1 view very tiny changes were visible. The impact on her business? Near to nothing as she does not print large. The differences would hardly be seen in the magazine prints.
    - Lens corrections and perspective control: does not really matter in garden photography, but she could see some occasional usefullness.
    - Publish services: no real need for it
    - Print packages: nope
    - Slightshow improvements: no use for it
    - Performance improvements: nothing visible
    - Effects: completely superfluous
    - New import dialog: at first glance a hindereance, as she has to get used to it
Then she asked: did they correct the keyword handling, when entering keywords witrh spaces? (You know the nasty bug, where keyword completion is broken at keywords with spaces). We checked (I knew it wasn't fixed), and of course she was heavily disappointed. Thus, after 2 years of development nothing new for her, keyword bug not fixed? Of course she said, that I should tell her, when keyword completion works, then and only then would she consider an upgrade.
So, despite all the bells and whistles about the new version, I doubt that for many photographers the benefits are really so overwhelming in the real world. It is a pitty that Adobe continues to neglect the DAM features (some fresh ideas for client management would be great), that existing features aren't consequently implemented (esp. the possibilities to query the catalog, and keywording), and that existing bugs are constantly ignored and not fixed.
So, please Adobe, get keyword completion fixed for keywords with spaces immediately !!! This is what professionals need. A catalog without reliable DAM features, renders the catalog concept to a great extend useless. Please listen!
Disclaimer: As I am not a professional for me the situation is not the same. I just report my experience I had, with a photgrapher, who needs a proper asset management. I recommended Lightroom to her because of the overall package (she moved from Cumulus), so I feel a little obliged to help her in this issue. In my case, as a user of a modest Lumix G camera system, I would consider the IQ benefits more signifcant. I don't know, if this is a general observation.
    Kind regards
    Thomas

I just report my experience I had, with a photgrapher (sic), who needs a (sic) proper asset management.
So the over-riding conclusion from your experience with just one photographer is that Lightroom is 'useless', and this compels you to demand, in bold type, that Adobe must listen?
That Lightroom has issues and areas for ongoing development is obvious, and Adobe won't dispute this.  But rants like yours add nothing and are unhelpful.  Julie's response is extremely tactful and far more moderate than your post deserves.
    Dear Mr. Webster
I think when you post, you should definitely change your tone. Julie simply answered my original post by acknowledging the problem, your accusation that I did not use appropriate "netiquette" is ridiculous. Posts like yours are a real problem of this forum.
I simply gave a user story example to show that not for everybody the shiny advertised new features provide real benefits and that paying attention to a thorough implementation of features can be equally important. I think Julie has recognized this. And the issue is nothing for ongoing developments. Lightroom supports keywords with spaces, so it has to be done consequently. Keywording is essential for DAM. If keywording gets too tedious or leads to wrong keyword assignments, then DAM is really pointless.
The intention of my post was to point Adobe to an apparently small problem, which has quite a big impact to people, who depend on good DAM features. The issue is nothing new, existed since the first release of Lightroom, but nothing was done about it, unfortunately. Now that Lightroom addressed keywords with spaces even with a new preference setting, it was fair to assume, that they had done something about it with care. This isn't so obviously. The issue was discussed in previous threads, but did not get any visible notice from Adobe. I am glad that this has changed now with Julie's post.
In no way did I say that Lightroom is useless or even that I regard it to be so. I merely said that the catalog concept is to a great extend (not completely) useless, if its implementation is sloppy. DAM starts with data entry and only after doing this, you can use it to your benefit. Therefore it has to be efficient, which currently is not. Lightroom is criticized by a large number of users that it is forcing them into a catalog system instead of just providing access to the file system. Long existing bugs like this, likely proves them right in their view.
The competition (I mean complete workflow solutions) is not really better than Lightroom with respect to DAM features, however, my take is, that the developers should be equally ambitious with the quality of the catalog system as they are with IQ, especially if the achievements in IQ are apparently less relevant to owners of high end camera systems. (I could be wrong with the last statement, but it would be interesting to hear if others have similar observations).
    Kind regards
    Thomas

  • Does Bridge only Filter/Search Keywords in one folder at a time?

It seems the "Filter" feature in CS6 Bridge will only search keywords in a single opened folder. What if I have multiple folders for image downloads, one per day, in a parent folder for the month, or even a year? Can I use Bridge to filter images in a folder containing other folders?
If not, is there another search strategy I can use to quickly filter images in multiple folders? Thanks.

You can select a root folder, and then select Show Items from Subfolders from the View menu. That adds all contained files to the Content panel, from which you can filter.
If you need more control, you can use Find instead, where you can also do AND/OR operations too, but takes a little more patience.

  • FCE can no longer read my project...

So everything was all well and good and today I tried to open an FCE file and I get the message: "This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of final cut."
The project is using HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30. There is no live action footage it was all After Effects HD renders using the Animation codec. I've never had a problem with this type of footage before.
It worked fine yesterday, and I made it with my version of final cut express. The only conceivable thing I can think of that might have messed things up is a .psd file I added to the project yesterday. I've never had a problem with that before though. If anyone knows how I can fix this or at least open the project please let me know. Thanks.

  • How can I integrate metadata and keywords in Lightroom with those in Photoshop, Bridge, and Photoshop Elements? In other words, is there a way to retrieve common metadata templates from all modules? Thanks!

Keyword and Metadata Integration throughout Adobe Modules

    Thanks! That's helpful.
What I mean by "common metadata", is a unified, updated, most current metadata, which I could update in each program. That is without overwriting the metadata, but appending new keywords to the metadata I created in the previous program.
I use Bridge, then Lightroom and finally Photoshop. That's the regular workflow: Bridge for preliminary sorting and and adding some keywords; Lightroom for organizing and picking the best images; finally, Photoshop for processing. I got Photoshop Elements on trial. Doesn't work for my purposes.
I need to share and update the metadata / keywords when I go from one program into another. Can't retrieve metadata I set up in Bridge into Lightroom. Same happens with Photoshop, where I can't retrieve keywords I add in Lightroom. It's tedious to write up the keywords again.
    Thanks for your efforts!

  • Using iPhote Keywords with PS Elements and visa-versa

    Howdy,
Does anyone know if you can xfer (import/export) iPhoto keywords to PS Elements 4 or Photo Bridge and visa-versa?
Or do you have to create a new Keyword list with Photo Bridge and PS Elements 4

    MV:
You can use iView MediaPro in the Demo mode to catalog your iPhoto LIbrary and then sync (write) the keywords back to the original file. That will permit other applications to read those annotations in the source file. Check out Tutorial #1 here. The methodology is there to do what you want even though it's geared for a different issue.
