Keywords in scanned Acrobat documents

I have a number of scanned US Census documents 1800s-1900s 'printed' to PDF files. I assigned keywords to them and now would like to search a folder for all PDFs that contain a keyword, like 'Texas' or 'Samuel'. How can this be doen?

Provided the keywords where entered in the respective PDF files as values for the "Keywords" entry on the Description tab of a PDF's Document Properties you can use Acrobat Pro to build a Catalog Index.
The index will 'hold' the values for meta data provided to the PDF files.
Make a discrete PDF from which advance search is launched.
In this PDF's Advanced tab of Document Properties "mount" the Search Index (the PDX file) by using the Browse button to locate the PDX file.
Close the dialog and Save the PDF.
Open this PDF. Start advanced search. Advanced Search can be configured to look for values contained in Keywords.

I have just updated Acrobat to version 10.1.13. I am using a MAC Running Yosemite.  When I try to scan a document, after the printer scans Adobe Acrobat quits and I get an unexpected closure error.  I am running Mac OS 10.10.1.  This only started happening when I installed the update of Adobe Acrobat.

    Hi MEW1,
Is the printer connected wirelessly or wired?
Go to Preferences and under categories go to > Convert to Pdf then select the Image Capture and then hit ok button.
Close Acrobat and then relaunch it and see if it helps you while you do scanning.

  • Acrobat 9 Professional-scanning multiple documents needed

I need to scan multiple documents and the "hide scanners interface" is grayed out. I recently upgraded from Acrobat 8 professional, which occassionally would allow me to scan multiple docs. Called Adobe and they suggested I upgrade to 9. Still can't scan multiple docs at a time. Need to set my scanner as not being recognized as a flatbed. HELP PLEASE!!!
Apparently has something to do with the scanners interface setting.

  • I get prompted to select a scanner and a scan profile/preset each time I try to scan a document to PDF using Adobe Acrobat Pro.

    Hello,
I have a fujitsu scanner (fi-6140) connected to my computer and have the "Scan" button on the scanner associated with Adobe Acrobat.  And so when I press the "Scan" button on the scanner to scan a document, it launches Adobe Acrobat Pro automatically.   Then I get prompted to select a scanner/device and a scan profile.  It seems to remember the last-used scanner/device, however; it still prompts me each time to confirm the scanner/device selected and select a scan profile to use.  Is there a way to save both the scanner & scan profile information and so when I click the "Scan" button, it doesn't prompt me to select but starts scanning using the last-used settings automatically?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Are you facing the issue with any pdf file?
Please try updating Acrobat to 11.0.7 and check.
You might also want to repair Acrobat and see.

  • Acrobat 11.0.07 immediately crashes after scanning a document to PDF on my Mac.. this occurs after a recent update!

Why is acrobat 11.0.07 crashing on my MAC immediately after scanning a document to PDF.  I have not had this problem until after a recent update .  The scanner is a HP 8600 Officejet Pro....

    Hi Steve
There is a known issue with Acrobat 11 and it is specific to network/shared scanners and Mac OS 10.9. We have logged a bug in our database and we are working with Apple to resolve this issue. The workaround would be to connect the scanner via USB.
    Thanks

  • I am buying an Epson scanner. I am told it is compatible with an Apple Computer, is that correct? I have been told to get Acrobat XI Pro as the software for the scanner. Is that correct? Will this also scan handwritten documents into a Word document?

"I am buying an Epson scanner. I am told it is compatible with an Apple Computer, is that correct?"
We have no idea, and it isn't really our thing.
"I have been told to get Acrobat XI Pro as the software for the scanner. Is that correct?"
Acrobat XI Pro is available for Mac and is an excellent tool for making PDFs. We can't say whether it will work with the scanner. It depends what drivers Epson provide.
"Will this also scan handwritten documents into a Word document?"
That's not what Acrobat is for. It is for making PDFs. To make handwritten documents into Word documents, you'd just scan as graphics, and insert each graphic on a new page of the Word document. They will remain pictures of text, not something you can edit or copy/paste.

  • I can only scan one document at a time

I can only scan one document at a time on my scanner. Can PDF files or documents be merged together?

Your scanner software may be able to do that; not Adobe Reader.
If your scanner software cannot do that, then you'll need Acrobat or http://createpdf.acrobat.com/

  • Can commenting tools be used for a PDF document created by scanning another document?

I have Adobe Reader X.  It has commenting tools.  I
created a PDF file by scanning another docu
ment (a newpaper clipping) to the PDF file for an attachment to an Email. I am not able to use the highlighting tool on the new PDF document.  Since I was the author of the PDF document in this case (but obviously did not use Adobe Acrobat to create it), can I somehow enable use of commenting tools for the document?

The highlight tool works for highlighting text that is in the document (as text objects). Images of text, which is what you get with a scan, cannot be highlighted with this tool, even if you had Acrobat.

  • Scan a document to adobe reader

how do I scan a document to adobe reader

This cannot be done on Reader. You need to have Acrobat.
In Acrobat, go to Create > PDF from scanner.
Else you can use the Scanner software to scan to pdf and then view it in Adobe Reader.

  • How do i edit a scanned pdf document in word?

how do i edit a scanned pdf document in word?

In order to edit a scanned PDF anywhere, you'll need to run Optical Character Recognition so it can covert the text from an image to actual text.
That would require Adobe Acrobat once the PDF is created. If you are using scanning software to create the PDF, that option may be in the software so you can OCR it as you create it.

  • After scanning my document and converting to Microsoft Word the size of characters are different

After scanning my document and converting to Microsoft Word the size of characters are different and things like puntuation are distorted. How do I get the uniformity like the original?

Of course what lands in the Word file will differ from the viewed picture/image of text created by the scanner.
(The output of all scanners is always an image file. For an image of textual content the best output file format is TIFF.)
So you scan the hardcopy of text.
The scanner output image (picture) is brought into PDF.
At this point the only PDF page content that you can export to Word is the image (nope, no "text" just the image).
Consequently you use Acrobat's OCR feature to do OCR of the image of text.
With a decent paper source, proper resolution and a black and white image you'll get acceptable accuracy of recognition of the pictures of the characters.
    (the Optical Character Recognition)
Acrobat's Searchable Image and Searchable Image (Exact) provides output that used text rendering mode 3 (no fill, no stroke for the glyphs).
    So, invsible / hidden text.
The third OCR method is ClearScan.
You could play with each of the three to see what goes into a Word file.
Might try export to RTF, DOC and DOCX as well.
Anyway -- What is exported is the OCR output; Not the image of text.
And, of course, the image of the text is not the imprint on the paper that was scanned.
Each step to the way you have some deviation.
Once you have the exported PDF content in a Word file you can use Word to cleanup as desired / needed.
    OR
Prop up the hardcopy and transcribe to a Word file.

  • I can't scan a document in my printer and have it open in Reader like before

can't scan a document in my printer and have it come up in the adobe acrobat reader like it did before my last update...can anyopne suggest a solution...have been on hold with adobe for 46 minutes.

    Hi lostinma,
Are you scanning and then saving to PDF with your scanning software? What happens when you try to open the PDF in Reader? Do you get an error message?
Reader doesn't allow you to create PDFs, so you wouldn't be able to scan directly into Reader.

  • Editing a scanned paper document

    hi all,
i scanned a document that has an image as a background.  i just purchased acrobat becasue someone told me it could be done.  it is working for the most part but when i perform the ocr some of the text i am able to change but about 3 words which are part of sentences that are now changeable are not able to be changed. how is it possible for me to change all of the text and not just some.  i want to recreate the document but not lose the background picture. please help i need this by monday the 8th.
thank you for your time! :-)

Editing pdf files is iffy. Sometimes it can be done. Changing text on a background it a bad idea, the image in the background cannot accommodate the changed position of the text. It is ALWAYS better to change the original document. Editing pdfs is a crapshoot.

  • Scanned [PDF] Document Greyed Out

    Hello:
I have a Windows 7 Professional [SP1] (64)-bit computer running Acrobat v9.5.x that is having problems scanning in documents from a HP LaserJet Pro 400 MFP 425dn all-in-one, as PDFs, using the native HP scanning software that came with the device.
Scanned documents are "greyed out" when viewed in Acrobat, however, when these same documents are printed our or sent via e-mail [as attachments] they are displayed properly in Acrobat.
An additional oddity, is that on the same computer under a different user profile, the same scanned document is displayed properly in Acrobat.
While I realize that this could be a scanner [scanner software] issue, it seems likely that it may have something to do with the users [profile specific] Acrobat settings, so I'm wondering if there are some things I could check or if there is a way to remove this persons Acrobat settings, so they can be recreated.
    Thanks in Advance,

I should have waited a few more minutes before posting; I just heard back from the person affected by this issue and your recommendation has resolved the problem.
Thank you very much for taking the time to post this solution, I appreciate it.

  • Optical character recognition--how do I scan a document to text I can edit.

Optical character recognition--how do I scan a document to text I can edit?

You first scan the document to a PDF. Then you run OCR from within Acrobat. Depending on your setup, the OCR may be run automatically.
If you want to edit so the changes show on the screen, you will need to use ClearScan. The other two searchable options put the OCR text in a layer behind the image of your original document.
