<blockquote style="width: 80%; margin: auto; padding: 5px; border: 1px solid #000; background: #efefef;">10.4.9 now allows for USB cams of the USB Video Class (UVC). Other will still need the iChatUSBCam utility
If your Exception seems to be Networking or Router based read this FAQ
Essential Reading
Although you don't need an understanding of Firewalls or Network Translation on Routers some backgound reading can help.
This link Apple Doc number 93208 can help with basic settings in the Mac's Firewall and the Router's settings.
Note 1 should read:
1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP and UDP; and 5220, 5222, which need to be open for TCP only.
The page contains a link to a list of Routers that will work "Out-of-the-Box".
If your's does not appear, pay attention to Note 4, near the bottom, because you are going to have to search for more info about your router (or do that un-Mac thing and read the manual).
I found this ADSL GUIDE site useful for getting extra info by users of routers on DSL.
This site has an Apple Related Area in the Technical section which I have linked you to. It is searchable.
PortForward.com Has pics and instructions for many modems and routers for the Port Forward method of opening ports.
How to Start
After getting your account name, start iChat.
It will lead you through a assistant. Ryan's Pics and instructions on this bit
If you launched it before and are starting again make sure iChat is off line.
Go to Preferences in the iChat Menu item. Open the Acounts icon.
Select the type of account it is.
Type in your name (without the @mac .com suffix) and use tab key to enter password.
Server Options button (Server Settings tab in iChat 3.x) should be live at this point. Check that it reads login.oscar.aol.com and the port is 5190.
Close Server Options and hit enter.
iChat should now log on.
In iChat 3.x there is a check box in the accounts Information tab that says "Use this Account" to be checked to activate it.
Buddies
You now have to enter Buddies into the Buddies list
Use the "+" button at the bottom of the Buddy list window.
Add New Person or from your address book if you have recorded Buddies account names there.
The first account names you should add are the test accounts shown In Contact Testers or the FAQ here.

  • I will starting afresh website in my iWeb, it shows only the head or the command line and the command new website is inactive - what do I need to start over

    Help........
I will starting afresh website in my iWeb, when I start the program it only shows the head or the command line and the command new website is inactive - what do I need to start over - what have I done wrong

Don't quite understand what you mean, but it says at the bottom that you are still using iWeb 08 so depending on what OSX you are running, you might consider upgrading to iWeb 09.  This works with Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
Apple no longer sells iWeb so if you decide to upgrade, then you'll need to purchase iWeb by going to Amazon and buying the iLife 09 or 11 boxed sets, both of which contain iWeb 09.
Install this on your Mac and it might solve your problems, or just ditch iWeb and start again with one of the newer programmes out there that are still being supported and updated, such as RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro/Express, Flux 4, WebAcapella 4 and EverWeb (http://www.everwebapp.com).

  • What do I need to start leaning how to make custom Portfolio temlates?

I am trying to find out what I would need to do to make my own custom PDF Portfolios. I keep hearing that this is possible but sure can't find much in the way of documentation on just how to do it.
I have read that they can be created using Flash or Flex 3.0. I have not worked with ActionScript before so I thought I would start there and learn Flash and ActionScript. I have found some books that can teach me this.
I have been trying to find documentation that will show how do create a PDF Portfolio but have been unsuccessful so far.

Go to the Acrobat Developer Center and under the section 'Acrobat 9 SDK available for download' posted on Aug 18th, there is a link to a form you can fill out to get more information.

  • What do I need to start developing apps?

Hello good people of the internet! I have a question about how I would start to develop apps for iOS, so I decided to come to the source.
Here's my backround. I grew up with PC's and I love tinkering with things. I'm a PC gamer who loves to mod games and screw around with those kind of things. I'm a college student studying Aerospace Engineering, but I have pretty much no coding background. I have a PC laptop (2 year old Toshiba Qosmio), an iPhone 4s (in the shop because the battery's rusted), and an iPad Air. I am eager to learn to make iOS app because it is a skill that particularly interests me and it looks like fun.
My question is, what do I need to do to start developing apps. I know I need a Mac, so what Macs have enough horsepower to develop apps? What coding language(s) do I have to learn? Where can I learn said coding language(s)? Where do I get the app development software, and how much does it cost? How do I get my finished apps onto the App Store?
I thank the good people of this forum who have taken the time to view my question, and I give even more thanks to those who respond.
    Grazie mille!
    -Matt

    Any recent Mac will work.

  • What do I need to start a server?

    Hello,
I am an interested college student and I would like to make a test application server on my PC to basically just learn the JSP technology and possibly host a personal site on it. I have had a year of Java in high school, however we only really worked on desktop apps. I want to know what specific applications I need that I can download for free from the Sun site to accomplish this task. I have downloaded Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8 and definitely will use Studio Creator. I have used NetBeans in the past (I realize Netbeans is more for desktop apps and the Studio Creator is for web stuff), but it confused me with the amount of features which gives me a strong feeling that I only dabbled in watered down (newbified) techniques in my class (for ex: the use of BreezySwing). I know I could definitely read Documentation for years straight without any problem, but I want to just jump in and do! Any tips on where I can learn more condensed, concept-based info instead of detailed, confusing, long listing?
    Thanks in advance,
    Shaun

Rather than going with the sun application server, I would recommend you get a hold of Jakarta Tomcat.
It also is free, and is a good place to start with web programming.
With Tomcat you can jump straight into servlet/JSP programming, without worrying about EJB, JMS, javamail... and all the other extra stuff that is part of the J2EE spec.
You can find Tomcat here: http://tomcat.apache.org
    Setting it up: http://www.coreservlets.com/Apache-Tomcat-Tutorial/
The Tomcat docs are fairly good. I recommend you read this tutorial on setting up web applications: http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-5.5-doc/appdev/index.html

  • What downloads are needed to start using Java?

I just need to know what I have to do to
started programing with java. I want to use
it in web browsers. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

You want to make java applets for webpages? My guess would just be the latest Java SDK.

  • What do i need to start work with Beehive?

What utilities should i use to work with Beehive? As i see it is impossible to manage team work in beehive only via web-interface, as it was possible in OCS - am i right?
The web-interface is rather poor, what is its purpose?
Should i use a lot of different clients to work in Beehive on team project:
administrative task in beectl utility, and the work in Internet Explorer + SmartFTP + Mozilla Sunbird + Mozilla Thunderbird + Pidgin?
Or for work with all beehive options i must nesessarily use Microsoft Outlook?
    Thank you.

    Hello
web interfaces are due to future releases, in the near future for some functionalities, farther for some others. Beehive releases are supposed to occur quite often, you should expect more soon.
For now, if you wanna start and evaluate the platform, you can use MSOutlook indeed, of a bunch of free clients (Mozilla, ...). But beehive is much more powerful than what you get through those interfaces.

  • FAQ: What do I need to know about file associations when I load  Photoshop CS6?

Use Windows control panel to establish the file association.
This solution uses Photoshop as an example. For any other product, replace that product's filename extension and executable name with the product and file type you are attempting to restore.
    Windows 7/Vista
    Choose Start > Control Panels.
    Change to list view:
    Double-click Default Programs.
       4.  Click Associate A File Type.
       5.  Select .PSD from the list.
    Click Change Program.
If your desired version of Photoshop is listed, choose, it. Otherwise, click Browse to locate it and click Open.
Ensure the "Always use the selected program..." option is selected. Click OK to close the Open With dialog box.
Double-click an .PSD file to ensure that it opens with your preferred version of Photoshop.
On Windows 7, click the View By pop-up menu and choose Small Icons.
Windows Vista, click Classic View in the upper left.
    Windows XP
Choose Start > Control Panels > Folder Options.
           Click the File Types Tab.
           Select PSD from the list.
Note: If you do not have PSD in the list of extensions, skip ahead to the next section, Create a filename extension.
           Click Advanced.
Select the Open action, and click Edit
Click Browse and navigate to the Photoshop.exe for your version. Select it and click Open.
Note: Make sure that the resulting value in the Application Used textbox has the following syntax, especially the "%1" (with quotes included). If it does not, manually edit the field contents so that it does:
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Photoshop.exe" "%1"
Select Use PSD and click OK to close the New Action dialog box.
Click OK to close the Edit File Type dialog box.
Click Close to close the Folder Options dialog box.
Double-click an .PSD file to ensure that it opens with your preferred version of Photoshop.
How to associate files for Photoshop CS5 with Bridge CS5 and Photoshop CS6 with Bridge CS6
    1. CS6 assigns all standard graphics files to be associated with CS6 and thus causes Bridge CS5 to invoke Photoshop CS6.  The objective is to have Bridge CS5 invoke Photoshop CS5 at least for chosen file types.  Ensure neither CS5 nor CS6 is invoked.
    2. In the Win7 Start Menu search box, type "file association".
    3. Select the "Change the file type associated with a file extension".  This starts a window titled "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program".
    4. All of the graphic files are assocated with Photoshop CS6.   For those files you want to associate with Photoshop CS5, click on the chosen file extension (e.g. .cr2, .nef, .psd, etc) and click on the "Change Program" to associate the extension to Adobe Photoshop CS5.  (note.  this step seems to be a necessary operation since, when I simply modified the Bridge CS5 file type associations, Bridge 5 did not honor the change).
    5. Start Bridge CS5. Choose "Edit -> Preferences -> File Type Associations".
    6. For each file type you wish opened in CS5, change the association from CS6: choose the "Browse" option and locate the CS5 version of Photoshop.exe".  This is probably in Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)/Photoshop.exe. Click on OK to complete the association.
Now you can invoke Bridge CS5 and it will properly invoke Photoshop CS5.  If you invoke Bridge CS6, it will invoke Photoshop CS6.  If you use file manager to invoke one of your selected file extension types, it will start Photoshop CS5. Other graphic files will start Photoshop CS6.
If you wish, you can go back and reassociate the chosen types to PhotoshopCS 6 - but your Bridge 5 will still invoke PS5 for your chosen extensions since the Bridge-assigned file associations takes priority over the windows default program.

Disclaimer: Apple does not necessarily endorse any suggestions, solutions, or third-party software products that may be mentioned in the topic below. When do I Post a New iChat Topic ?
Applies to All Version of iChat
    Welcome to the    Discussions
We realise you may be new to posting here in these Discussions. Please consider the following (Link to Terms and Conditions See item 2).
If your Post seems NOT to be an answer for the original postee. Please Don't Threadjack. See above link for explanation.
Pause for a moment and consider carefully if your reply belongs with an existing topic.
Is your issue the same as the Original Message ?
It's okay to post a "me too" and any relevant details you have. But if your issue is only similar, but different in some way, your reply may dilute the focus and divert the current effort in the thread (threadjack), so you should consider Adding a Discussion Topic about your issue, which will get more concentrated attention, and signify a trend in topic titles (if you use a similar subject title).
Note: The Reply links at the top right with preceding return arrow of the original message will result in a new reply to the original message. Consider that this may not be what you intended.
So, here's a Tip: Always use the reply button of a message (every reply in a thread has a Reply link) to relate your post to that message, and you'll always be in the proper position in the thread.
I suggest that you Post a New Topic (Here For iChat 3 or here for iChat 4) including information which would help better answer your question such as: Mac model and speed. Router and settings, Modem and settings, circmustances:
    * Your computer's specs. Scroll to the bottom and fill in the boxes and Save.
    * Your OS specs (As Above)
    * Which Version of iChat.
    * Your connection method.
    * Details of your Uplink and Download speeds from here with some indication if this is near the figure your ISP says you should get.
    * The ports you have set up on your Mac's Firewall (Tiger for iChat 3 or if ON in Leopard for iChat 4).
    * The ports you have set up in your Router and Or Modem.
    * Any error Messages you have seen and where that was. (See Note on Restrictions at bottom of this User's Tip)
    * An indication of whether you have read the User Tips
And any additional info such as:
    * Firewire cards and devices - powered and unpowered.
    * What camera and type it is.
    * The number of computers connected to the internet at your location.
    * The number and type of devices (routers and modems) are in your set up.
    * If you are using an SIP service like Voice over IP or Vonage.
Unless you have a solution for the original poster of a thread, it is not a good idea to hijack a thread with a new problem no matter how similar the problem is. You can reference to other threads by copying the web address into your post. But solutions given in a thread will not always pertain to you, and solutions to your problem won't always pertain to the initial poster if you attempt to hijack a thread. It is best to have individualized attention so the right advice is given to the right people. You can read through other threads and ask if something pertains to you, but please don't hijack the threads. It is worth noting that often most posters have not turned Off the Subscription feature so they will get an email of every subsequent reply.
    Note:
Since OS 10.4.7 and iChat 3.1 Apple have included a Log feature that pops up on failed Audio or Video chats.
This Pop up can be expanded by using the Details Reveal triangle to see the content before you send it to Apple.
Copying and posting this Log can be useful.
However not all of it is and it should be restricted to the bits above the line that reads "Binary Images for iChat"
Old Logs are stored on your Computer in your Home Folder (Little House icon)/Library/Logs/iChatConnectionErrors.
    Hope this helps.
Please, if posting Logs, do not post any Log info after the line "Binary Images for iChat"

  • Kichat: FAQ 3 - How do I get Video and Audio Chats with PCs ?

Disclaimer: Apple does not necessarily endorse any suggestions, solutions, or third-party software products that may be mentioned in the topic below. How do I get Video and Audio Chats with PCs ? iChat FAQ 3 (Updated 3/4/2009)
Applies to iChat 2.x, iChat 3.x and iChat 4.x to any version of AIM on a PC before AIM 6.1
See bottom section on AIM 6.5 and 6.8 on XP and Vista.
This piece is designed for those trying to connect Mac to PC for Video and Audio chats. Any iChat version Panther and up.
    Glossary For This FAQ
This bit is designed for clarity.
Video is the sending and /or receiving of pictures and sound.
Audio is the sending and or receiving of sound only.
One-Way is the ability to start either an Audio or Video chat from one end to a recipient who can not match your capabilities (or Vice Versa)
    What is needed
    At the Mac end
A Mac running OS 10.3.x and iChat AV ver 2.1 or 10.4 plus iChat 3 or Leopard and iChat 4
A DSL/Cable/Fibre (Broadband) connection of at least an up link speed of 256kbs.
An AIM , @mac.com or MobileMe (@me.com) account name.
(hosting Multiple person Mac to Mac AV chats requires higher specs and broadband uplink speed).
    At the PC end
1 PC running windows XP (home or Pro). THIS A MUST
The AIM Standalone Application, currently at ver. 5.9 at this link. AIM (the Site) now call this version Classic and it cannot be Installed On Vista
Note: there is also Trillian which has a Pro version for $25 that can also Video and Audio chat. The Basic version just Texts and Audio Chats (AIM does not Audio chat)
Some need the aimrtc12.exe file from Here Mostly Earlier than XP or Pre Service Pack 2 XP versions of Windows
An AIM account/screen name (AOL or Netscape count as well)
Service Pack 2 info. This info will allow the PC user to enable AIM thorough the XP Firewall. The Windows Firewall did not exist as such before this.
    Between both of you.
At least one camera (Mac end works better)
A sound input device (the camera, if it has one is ok)
Your Buddies screen/account name in each others Buddy Lists
    Other tweaks
For some people, using AIM on a PC, may also have to make sure their preferences (properties) are set in the AIM Buddy list, for their camera and /or Mic. (Tuning at Message 570)
This is an icon button lower right on the Buddy List marked "Prefs" (AIM 5.5). This leads to the Preferences. Drop down the list until you read Live Video. Click on this. In the new window that opens click the button that says Tuning Video and Audio. Follow the instructions in the wizard that opens up. Access in AIM 5.9 for this is in the My AIM menu at the top of the Buddy list and then Options
    To Start
You should now be able to chat to each other.
If each of you has a camera it can be full Video , as described in the Glossary at the top.
To start from the Mac end, select (highlight) your Buddy with one click. His camera icon should be dark. Click on the icon near his name or the one at the bottom of the Buddy List. (You do not have to start a text chat).
To start from the PC end you need to start a text chat, then select the Video icon at the bottom of the chat window.
If one of you has a camera and the other has a Mic then you will be able to video chat One Way but sound will be both ways.
To start this type of chat from the Mac end you will have to go to the menu item "Buddies" and drop down to the item "Invite to One Way Video Chat"
To start this from a PC follow the directions in the paragraph above. You may need to change the tab to the incoming Video at the back of the two to see the Video. These tabs are added when the Video chat starts and the front one normally states you do not have a camera and shows a connection to buy one.
It is also possible to chat One Way if the other person does not have a Mic: replies will have to be typed in a Text chat.
No Camera and No Mic will cause iChat to End the chat with "No Data Received for 10 Secs"
    Summary
PC end gets AIM 5.9 or Trillian Pro.
The PC end allows the app through the XP Firewall.
AIM 5.9 needs "Tuning" to Camera and Mic.
For any sort of sound to a PC using AIM, (Talk in PC or Audio in iChat) the Mac will need a camera. The other person can have a Mic and then live chats with sound both ways and Pictures (Video) One-Way.
NOTE: At This Time It Is NOT Possible to Audio (sound only) between Mac & PC with AIM & iChat
Trillian Basic can Audio. Trillian Pro can Video and has a bigger picture and can do Full Screen.
Another explanation of the set up can be found Here about AIM 5.5 but is transferable to AIM 5.9.

AIM 6.5 and 6.8 On Vista and XP
AIM 5.9 or earlier can not be installed on Vista.
AIM 6.5 and 6.8 use a new video codec with a description of "Real Time IM"
AIM have an FAQ page about this
Below the pics is this quote
What do I need to use Real-Time IM?
You and your buddy need to be using AIM® 6.8 or higher to use Real-Time IM. Unfortunately, Real-Time IM does not yet work with older AIM clients, iChat®, or AIM® for Mac®.
See items 5 through 13 on this page for alternatives including Web Browser based ones.

  • To start using iChat

    Hi
Well, let me explain, i have never used iChat even though ive been using my mac mini for almost two years, but i want to start using it now...so my question is what do i need to start using iChat? i know theres something about AOL but yea thats about all i know....Can somebody help me please?
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

You'll need a good camera, one with a microphone build in.
If you can get your hands on one of the good old iSights, get it.
Another option is to use your DV Camcorder (if you have got one) and use the
firewire cable to connect it to your Mini.
The system requirements for A/V iChat are:

Check the specs of your mini. I would try any camera before I'd buy it.

  • What do I need for this?

I would to write some code where a web surfer would
enter in some data (criteria) that would be sent to a
web server where the criteria would be used to cut
a small section of a large image file and send that
smaller image back to the end users browser.
What do I need to start development (simple & quick)?
Are there java components that need loaded on the
    server for this to happen?
Will applets do what I want?
    Thanks!

Certainly you will want some sort of processing to take place on the server. Otherwise, all the server could do is stupidly send the entire image file. It sounds like servlets or CGI we what you want to use.

I keep getting a message that my start up disk is full.  What do I need to do?

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Downloaded firefox 5.0.1 last night, worked fine, Turned computer on today, Mozilla Firefox, it won't start. Get error message, Error: Platform version '5.0' is not compatible with minVersion =5.0.1 maxVersion =5.0.1" What do I need to do to fix it?

We downloaded firefox 5.0.1 last night, began working with it. It did fine. After about an hour, I turned off my computer. When I turned on my computer, I click on Mozilla Firefox and it won't start. I get this error message, " Error: Platform version '5.0' is not compatible with minVersion >=5.0.1 maxVersion <=5.0.1" from XUL Runner. What do I need to do to fix it?

The updater wasn't able to update all the files and some were left as older versions.<br />
    Do a clean reinstall.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version.
    * Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
