Kid Proofing OS X (Part One, Launcher replacement)

Well, I am finally getting around to upgrading the kids (ages 6 and 3) to OS X. My motivation is only because I cannot get the Touch Window and PS2 KidzTrack and Big Keys to work under OS 9. I have some reservations since much of the software is old and requires 256 colors. Support for this is poor under OS X, so I will probably pitch those. The six year old has a profound learning disability but has been independently using a Mac since she was two. She quite successfully navigates between about fifty items in seven categories, way more stuff than fits on the Dock. Can any one recommend a launcher-like utility for OS X? It should support single clicking and grouping. I have investigated some of the virtual desktop stuff, but those are too complicated. Thanks!

I was hoping to hear from you Archie! There is much of this I expect you can help me with, but my kids will not be control-clicking. What you suggests works well for adults, not children. To get the same effects I enjoy with launcher (categorical groupings) I will need a half a dozen folder icons on the Dock. Possible, but a few behaviors bother me:
(1) These folders will all be independent of each other (which means overlapping, or taking up the entire desktop should they all be opened).
(2) The aliases in those folder, unlike the Dock, requiring double clicking. (Truth be told, the kids will probably be okay with this. But OS 9, and maybe even 10.0, had the option for “button view” which I miss.)
(3) How do I lock down the folders so the alias can’t accidently be dragged to the desktop? Thanks!

  • Kid Proofing OS X (Part Two, Dock tweaking)

    I mentioned yesterday that the little kids have their own Macs. I am trying to move them to a newer shared machine.
    My wife and I each have our own (unprotected) login on the adult machine. Naturally the kids are frequently interested in messing with our computer rather than their own (all the computers are in the family room) and this has worked out just fine except for a recurrent problem each of us is experiencing with the Dock.
    Icons keep disappearing off my wife’s Dock. We suspect our three year old as the culprit for this, but I am not entirely certain of this.
    My account has the exact opposite difficulty, a couple of folders I have long ago deleted keep showing up as a grey question mark. (I drag it off the Dock, but then reboot and the ? is back. I have added and rearranged other items with no ill effect.)
    I suspect that the solutions to both issues are closely related.
    What is the recommended procedure for locking down the Dock once it is configured nicely? Can this process be reversed to correct ghost aliases?
    Thanks!

    I had to think about why I trying to get the kids upgraded to OS X. Mac OS 9 works great. I have not had to launch Classic on the eMac for a year, so I wanted to modernize the other machines in the house mostly to be compulsive.
    I may to let my children surf, and Kid Pix 3X is compelling, but that is about it. Well, that and the assistive technology that wasn’t working.
    Mostly because I am cheap, I had acquired (eBay, naturally) an USB TouchWindow touch screen, PS/2 KidTrac trackball, and PS/2 Big Keys Plus. None of that hardware worked right under Mac OS 9, so I though OS X would solve that. I have a generic keyboard/mouse PS/2 USB adapter.
    The TouchWindow looses its calibration every time the Mac goes to sleep. The KidTrac always right-clicks instead of left click. The Mac doesn’t know what to do with the Big Keys keyboard and I have not had success remapping the Ctrl key to Command. I have a regular Apple keyboard attached, so I would prefer to remap one keyboard, not both.
    I have also tried a Pi Engineering PS/2 to USB adaptor but get the same results. Does anyone have successful experience with any of these three products with OS X?
    Thanks!

  • Kid Proofing OS X (Part Three, disc images)

    Okay, you people are letting me down! This is my last question in this series for now.
    Since I don’t want the kids handling CDROMs, and since the publishers all seem to think inserting a disc is a great idea, I am in the habit of using Disk Copy to mirror discs to to the hard drive and automatically mount them on start up. Lucky for me hard drives have gotten so big! Under Mac OS 9, I can uncheck “Verify Checksum” and the disc images mount very quickly. Even with a dozen virtual drive, the boot sequence is fast enough not to exhaust patience of a the toddler. The verbal, auditory, and visual feed back probably helps.
    Is there an equivalent preference setting for OS X? Clicking on the “skip” button is not an option!
    Thanks!

    On other 10.4 systems without this hack, I am now noticing that there is not always a long delay when the image is opened. Uncompressed disc images (created with CD/DVD master option ) always seem to open quickly. Compressed disc images launch quickly after the first time (without hitting skip button). Anyone understand what is going on? Can anyone point me to a reference that explains the different options in Disk Utility? Thanks!

    My Mac is a 21.5-inch Late 2009 with a 1 TB Seagate HD that must be replaced, according to Apple support Panama, but they denied me that right because the serial is not part of the replacement program: any suggestions to get a plausible solution to this problem?
    I would want to know what are the criteria used by the people al espresslane support to deny the opportunity presented by the replacement program, given the situation that these 1 TB Seagate HD´s have had problems and certainly not only in the batch they accepted, but probable in other batches too.
    The second question is about the powerpc support that is lost when updating from Snow Leopard to Lion X: I can not read my medical application UPTODATE.
    I hope that there wil be some kind of support to help me solve that problem, this is my first petition actually.
    Now, I do not have access to my yahoo email, intermitent access to Apple home page, unpredictable access to Apple store and no access to iCloud in my iMac: when I try to access these web sites, the blue web address bar is interrupted and never goes to the end, no filling up the whole bar.
    I do not know what is the first problem, the Seagate HD or the Lion X, but my life is becoming a miserable one, not having the opportunity to enter in the raplacement program, losing the powerpc support because of the updating to Lion X, the necessity to buy Lion X again because it used to appear as a paid program, but not anymore, and finally having no access to my yahoo email, Apple home website and Apple store and no access at all to the iCloud: I am done.
    Chao, Elías.

    You can have Apple or a competent service shop replace the internal HD for a fee, unless you have AppleCare and the iMac is within its warranty period in which case it will cost nothing. If you must pay the cost will be approximately $350 US.
    PowerPC support is gone with Lion. You can install or retain Snow Leopard on another partition, and boot Snow Leopard as necessary.
    The inability to load web pages is a different problem, unless it is related to your failing hard disk.

I would rather we deal with this, without out getting EBay involved, however, I have all correspondence, between us, and believe, the evidence speaks for itself!  I contacted you immediately, with my concerns, sent you the pictures of the remote you requested, and then, waited for the replacement...that never came!  Please credit my account, for the item I purchased, that does not work, and that you never sent a replacement for.

    Dear
    Having major problems with this item.  There were no directions with this unit, but it seemed pretty straight forward.  I installed new batteries, turned it on, and it worked great for one hour, then shut off.  I was able to turn it on again, but after 15 seconds, it shut off?  Attempted five times, with same result?  Took it out-no water had gotten in, so put in another set of new batteries, and the same thing happened again!  I really love this item, in fact, told my sisters I would buy them one...but, not sure if this one is faulty, or if  they all perform like this?  If that is the case, I would like to return it.  If perhaps I received a faulty one, would like to return for replacement, if it works, will order 3 more.
    Please let me know.
    Thanks

    I have attached 2 photos of the remote control I received, and you asked for.  Please let me know how to 'FIX' this problem, or if it can't be fixed, due to it being faulty, please refund my purchase, or send me a new one to try.

  • I lost my ipod. Bought a used one to replace it. When I plug it into the computer, the computer doesn't even seem to realize it's plugged in. How do I put my existing itunes library onto the new (used) ipod?

    How do I clear out a used ipod classic and put my existing itunes library on it? I lost my previous ipod and bought a used one to replace it.

    Do one or more of the following
    > Restart your computer
    > Uninstall & Reinstall iTunes
    > Reset iDevice (won't erase everything)
    > Go to My Computer (windows xp) or Computer (windows vista & 7) and see if iDevice shows
    > Restore the iDevice completely (will erase everything)
    > Make sure the iTunes and/or iOS firmware is up-to-date.
    The ones I cross over is the ones you don't have to do. This should help

  • A friend set me up with icloud and in the process he lost some of the book i was listening to. I can't find it in my ipod or on my computer. It is part one and two of a book; interest part three showed up hough.

    A friend set me up with icloud on my ipod touch and in the process lost part one and two of the book I had purchased from itunes. I searched for it and it is not in my ipod any longer, although part 3 is there.  I tried to download it again from itunes store but they said I already purchased it and I didn't want to be charged again. What can I do? I am not happy at all because all I did with my Ipod was listen to my book and now I can't.

    Hi.
    If you've bought it from iTunes, you should be able to re-download it for free.
    Download directly from iPod by going to the iTunes Store-App and find the "Purchased"-menu. From here you should get a complete list of all your bought items and the ability to re-download.
    Download from iTunes on PC/Mac by opening iTunes > Go to iTunes Store > Go to the menubar on the left and choose "Purchased". Now, from the appearing window select the proper categori on top of the screen.
    I hope this was helpful.

    Hi howe.sc,
    When I checked for how signatures in Yosemite work, I found this.
    Mail (Yosemite): Include signatures in messages
    Delete a signature from a message: Select the signature, then press the Delete key.
    Replace a signature in a message: Delete the existing signature, then add a different signature.
    That sounds similar to what you are describing.
    Take care,

  • When listening to audio books after several parts it skips back to part one and starts playing all over.

    Why is my iPod nano skipping back to part one after listening to several parts of an audio book.  The book starts all over from the beginning and when I get to the part I stopped on, it will not let me skip to the next part.

    Have you tried a simple reset of the iPod to see if that does any good first?  To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
    It might also hurt to try a full restore of the iPod in iTunes as well.  This process wipes all content from the device, resets all settings back to their defaults, and reloads a fresh copy of the iPod's software onto the device.  This would help eliminate the possibilty of a software issue/glitch and/or data corruption on the iPod.

  • Is there a free one time replacement for accidental broke screen on iPad 2?

    Is there a one-time replacement for accidentally broken iPad 2 screen.

    I tried on my less than month old iPad2 64gb.
    I had to make 2 trips (one to schedule appt and one for the "Genius" appointment) for what I knew would be the answer ($349) so kind of frustrating experience -- especially listening to the litany of other relatively mundane problems people were having.  Then made a 3rd appointment to see if the meltdown another custormer next to me was having affected my review with Genius #1.  Same result.  Hard to justify over $1k investment in less than a month.  Genius #2 agreed and suggested to use a screen cover laminate and await next version.
    I did not drop mine -- but it fell over face first while using the smart cover as a stand.  Of course it fell on a granite counter top but the glass shattered/cracked (yet stayed in place).  Still works so using the cellophane envelope to keep glass shards from cutting me.  Looks quite stupid in public.
    Overall not a pleasant experience.  Wasn't expecting a free replacement -- but also not expecting the 2 trips, seemingly discretionary ad hoc Genius review, long wait and the absence of a simple screen replacement/cheaper option.

  • Add: Part One, Part Two.......and so on

    I have a large document I want to add Part One, Part Two........... and so on to the beginning of each chapter title automatically, with a script, is this possible, and can someone (as I'm not so great a scripting) show me an example?
    Many thanks

    Hmmmm (thinking). It might boil down to this: search for your chapter titles (by style? I'll be assuming that!), insert 'part xx' before. Searching is no problem; inserting stuff is, because it messes up the 'found item' array. Let's start at the end, shall we. This code is not tested!
    var numerals = [ "One", "Two", "Three", "Four", "Five", "Six", "Seven", "Eight", "Nine", "Ten", "Eleven", "Twelve", "Thirteen" ]; (etc.)
    app.findTextPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.findTextPreferences.appliedParagraphStyle = "ChapterTitle"; // [!! YOUR STYLE NAME HERE !!]
    allFoundItems = app.activeDocument.findText(true);
    // This returns the items in REVERSE ORDER :-)
    if (allFoundItems.length > numerals.length)
      alert ("We're gonna need a bigger boat");
      exit(0);
    for (occurrence=0; occurrence<allFoundItems.length; occurrence++)
      allFoundItems[occurrence].insertionPoints[-1].contents = "Part "+numerals[allFoundItems.length-occurrence-1]+"\r";
    The 'allFoundItems' array is in reverse order (as requested by findText), so the numbers should be inserted last-to-first. Let me know how that worked out
