Killed by fonts

About every month I try to switch to Arch, and every month I give up after spending hours and hours trying to get firefox to display fonts properly.  The combinations of WM, LCD vs CRT, AUR, nVidia, font packages, results in a never ending  battle to get my fonts to look right.  Arch needs something like hwd for fonts.  I end up randomly guessing at the magical combination that will make my fonts look like a screenshot from a pro's box.  but it never happens.  I end up going back to ubuntu which renders webpages perfectly after a fresh install.  There are too many combinations of things.

I've been told this is too many fonts:
  pacman -S ttf-ms-fonts ttf-dejavu artwiz-fonts ttf-liberation
I'm now trying ArchLinux inside VMWare on XP, so I don't have to keep reinstalling it everytime I screw up my fonts.  Ultimately my 2nd box will run Arch natively, once I get the fonts straight.
If the fonts look weird under VMWare (which is possible), I go back to the native box and use Clonezilla to roll it back.  I try so many things I forget what i've changed, thats why I like go back to a previous image.
I'm thinking of using the tiling WM "Awesome" to test the fonts with Firefox, so I don't have any WM stuff going on.  I installed GNOME on my native box, and it made all the small fonts fuzzy.  I could also try OpenBox, FluxBox, or IceWm, but I can never figure out which one I like.  Tiling WM's solve my lack of art skills by eliminating all the eyecandy, lol.
From the responses, it looks like I should only install the bitstream-vera fonts or microsoft fonts, then tell Firefox to use them. I thought if I load a ton of fonts it would increase my chances of the webpages looking good, but I guess that is wrong thinking.
EDIT:
I got a major improvement on my native box by using an nVidia-specific tweak, by specifying the DPI in the xorg.conf to be 96x96.  I still have issues, but at least it looks a lot better than it did.  I'll post screenshots once I learn how to make them.

  • 10.4.9 Killed my fonts!!   =(

    and really just generally screwed up my PB.
    The installation went quickly but upon restart the spotlight icon appeared in the menu bar but nothing else... no other white parts of the menu appeared. Then I got the beach ball.. left it on over night and nothing.. restarted and same thing happened.
    Weirdest thing is I could access my computer from another computer on my network as if the computer was fully booted.
    I deleted my wireless prefs in safe mode. Ran Disk Warrior. It said many of my fonts were corrupt. I moved those to another drive. Restarted and within about 10 mins of the beach ball the finder finally showed up. But now only my system fonts are loaded. All of my other fonts say they are BAD and should not be used!!!
    I downloaded the 10.4.9 install right from the apple site for a second try. The installer allowed my to install again... shouldn't it have said that I already had 10.4.9? Now the fonts are still not there but if i try to install them, it doesn't give me a warning, it just acts like it's installing them but nothing happens. This is where I am now.

    Jay, I just upgraded and see exactly the same behavior on my MBP 17. It would appear its not WPA that is the problem but rather that the Airport Network password item in the KeyChain cannot be accessed and its an outright frigging bug that should have been caught in testing. Try this:
    Open Keychain access and find the entry in the System chain. Open it and check the box to show the password. Enter your keychain master password and you'll get an error accessing the password. Change to the access control pane and you'll be asked for the keychain password. It is accepted and works, but if you go back to the Attributes pane you get the same error for the show password value when you check the box on the Attributes pane.. pane.
    FWIW I checked the disk and permissions before installing the update AND I ran first aid on the keychain, trying to avoid EXACTLY this problem. I saw similar though more easily fixable problems upgrading to 10.4.7 and 10.4.8. I hate doing Mac upgrades you can gaurantee SOMETHING will break! Look like a trip to the genius bar tomorrow!
    My Access point is a DI-624 like yours and other system can aceess it just fine so its NOT the AP, its the software.

  • Font is killing me...

    My font has been changed some how to a ridiculous, intricate
    font so it makes it impossible to read unless it is in a high size.
    So I just need to know how to set everything to appear in a
    readable text. It is only on some games, but is very
    annoying.

    Eduardo -- if I remember correctly, the font size depends on the operating system. There are no properties to change this.

  • Troubles with fonts, graphics in firefox

    I just rebooted my machine. I was trying to test a manually written grub.cfg with grub2. I screwed this up. Initially, I managed to get to a rescue shell by editing the kernel command line. I'm not sure what the correct term is - not the grub2 shell or rescue shell, I don't think, but ramfs with a sort of mini filesystem. Anyway, I replaced my backup grub.cfg and then found I didn't know how to reboot. I tried "reboot" but that did nothing and I guess there are no manuals in this shell. In experimenting, I managed to cause a kernel panic. (I think I accidentally killed init.) So I did a cold reboot. Everything now went smoothly, the system restored from the ext4 journal for the root filesystem and everything seems fine.
    I am having a couple of problems. One very minor one is that Kile no longer seems to recognise .dat files as tex or latex source. I am sure I can fix this. I just mention it in case it is important to something else.
    The bigger problem is that I'm seeing a lot of graphics corruption in Firefox. I've seen some of this before but it is now much worse. Also, before, it seemed tied to particular areas of a particular virtual desktop and nothing affected it. But this is tied to Firefox specifically and it changes all the time. I've never seen the location and search bar go through so many colour changes. If I reload the wiki pages, I may get ordinary coloured text or it may be rainbow coloured. I'm also getting fuzzy areas. I'm seeing a bit of this in KDE menus, too, but it seems much worse in Firefox.
    More weirdly, fonts in Firefox are screwed up.
    I'm not sure what font the wiki uses for ordinary text. It seems to be the same as on the forums and in this text box. In any case, all occurrences of 's' are replaced by squiggles. I am assuming my 's's will appear correctly to those reading this but in case I've mistyped or something, I am referring to the first letter of words such as 'school', 'schlep' and 'slippery slivers of silver sardines swimming surprisingly slowly'. This makes reading the wiki rather difficult. (There are a lot of 's's in it!) I was trying to find out how to reboot cleanly from the ramfs in case I end up there again.
    EDIT: In Firefox, the 's' in 'fonts' in the post title (once posted) is fine. So is the 's' in 'Forums' at the top of the page. Below this text box, the 'S' in 'Smilies' is fine but the 's' is not. The 's' in 'Options' is also OK but the option appears as 'Never ~how ~milie~ a~ icon~ for thi~ po~t'!
    Suggestions for the font issue would be very gratefully received. I looked through the last updates I did (today) and didn't see anything obvious but I then realised I wasn't sure what quite to look for. Here are the log entries from today:

    I am booting the standard kernel, not the lts, so the upgrade hasn't affected the kernel. I wasn't sure what libupnp did but judging by the package descriptions resulting from a pacman -Ss upnp, it doesn't seem likely to have anything to do with fonts but rather networking.
    I checked ~/.xsession-errors in case Firefox was logging any errors there but I can't see anything relevant - all the errors seem to be KDE's usual prolific output.
    Should I look further back? I probably didn't reboot after every previous system upgrade. Or did my messing with grub and causing a panic do some sort of damage which might be causing this? (I thought that was fairly unlikely but maybe I'm just being unduly optimistic.)
    EDIT: When people post code, the 's's are OK but the 'a's and 'm's are squiggles instead.
    I'm using the infinality freetype, fontconfig etc. Could that have anything to do with the problem? I didn't just install them or make any changes but might some other package have changed in a way that is incompatible with these? Or which requires some tweaking I'm not aware of?

    Er... my 's's have magically returned? But I have no idea why. I didn't even restart Firefox. (I'd already tried that and it made no difference.)
    Would really like to know why...
    EDIT: I still don't have 'm's etc. in code listings, though.

  • I finally got rid of babylon by resetting Firefox;then choosing a theme, fonts, etc. the page went 'ghost but there's no add-on. How to get rid of it?

    I had babylon everywhere -- ran a registry search and came up with a huge list; F3 got rid of all but 7, but those last 7 would not 'go'. I ran my Spybot but that wasn't successful in killing it. So I reset my Firefox and that apparently did the trick, because google search came up, not babylon, etc.
    So I was choosing fonts, and restoring the look of my page with a theme and at one point when I down loaded one and went onto facebook there was no page background color, no lines, no icons for 'like' or 'comment' or notifications up on the toolbar in the LH side, etc. I can't play words with friends because all that is visible are the letters -- the board is invisible.
    Is this 'ghostery' that I have read about which is an add-on? But the re-setting erased all my add-ons and I've checked, and I do not show having any.
    In both my yahoo and gmail accounts I have to hover over areas where I think 'delete' is and wait for it to pop up to click on it. Same for the pull downs for reply, forward, etc.
    I went to my Shutterfly account and it was just plain eerie -- pulled up a card I had just finished and you could see the front and back, but the top and bottom of the inside would not show. And what DID show was tiny, an inch or so wide and way over on the RH side (usually about 4x6 inches in the center).
    Please help me, I use this for work and it is making it impossible to do some tasks.

    If it happens again the make sure that you aren't suppressing website colors.
    Make sure that you allow pages to choose their colors and that you haven't enabled High Contrast in the Accessibility settings.

  • How to change font size in dreamweaver

    hello?  this is really a bit of overkill for a simple question.  could someone please help with this?
    and while we're at it there's a fly i want to kill with a sledge hammer

    If by changing font-size you mean in your web pages, the answer is use CSS with values in px, em or %.
    body {font-size: 100%}
    p {font-size: 1em}
    h1 {font-size: 3em}
    h2 {font-size: 2.5em}
    h3 {font-size: 2em}
    h4 {font-size: 1.5em}
    and so on....

  • I can't change my font from the character menu, how do I fix this?

    Basically, the only way I can change my font is through the Type>Font menu up top (and by right clicking), but the list in the character palette and the control bar are empty. I can type in the name of the font I want and it will complete it, but even then it doesn't change anything. It is really inefficient for me to have to scroll through all the fonts every time, especially when I have no idea what font I want (or if the one I want is at the bottom of the list).
    It started doing this just out of the blue a few months ago, before then it was working fine, no idea what set it off. I can't print from Illustrator either, maybe it's part of the same problem (that started earlier).
    My version is CS2. Windows XP. I don't think that my boss is going to upgrade either in the near future. It's a small company, we don't have IT help.
    I've done some searching and have already tried:
    -uninstalling the old Illustrator 9 that was on here
    -deleting the aiprefs file
    -deleting the entire folder it was in
    -deleting all of the Adobefnt*.lst files I could find
    -restarting Illustrator, the computer several times
    I haven't tried reinstalling Illustrator yet. Don't know where the CD is, so it's a last resort.

    Oh dear. It looks like I have made things much, much worse.
    (I did indeed do my deleting with Illustrator closed, and tried moving before deleting)
    I opened it up again and did some work. I tried saving my file (in .ai format, variety of shapes, layers, fonts), when it told me that an unknown error occured, then another message that said something like "Can't finish previewing, not enough memory ID=-108", and then it crashed. Turns out that now it doesn't like fonts at all and it isn't too keen on shapes either.
    Found the CD. Uninstalled CS2, told it to delete my preferences file but keep the computer activated. Killed Adobe reader while I was at it (haven't reinstalled yet). Looked through my program files for any traces it left behind but didn't see anything (under Program Files>Adobe, and Documents and Settings>Application Data>Adobe). Restarted the computer and reinstalled Illustrator (well, I tried repairing first but that didn't do anything). And nothing has changed. Still can't access the fonts, and now I have errors opening/saving files too. There was another, new error, something something 6654 I believe.
    I'm baffled.

    Good question. That is the funny thing! With echo %classpath% everything seems to be o.k. But not one of my java editors will recognize this package. When I use this package on my other computer (XP Home) everything will be recognize correctly.
    The only way for me was to kill alle entries in all classes which are defining the package name. But this solves my main problem only temoprarry.

  • Font bug in Preview PDFs due to ATSSERVER

    Hello all,
    For the past couple of months I have been having a very annoying problem where the text of pdf is garbled. I'll download a pdf file and when I open it some or most characters are replaced with empty spaces or symbols.
    After a lot of searching a few weeks ago I found a post describing this exact problem, but to make this solution easier to find (and since this bug has not been fixed) I will post it again.
    If you pdf files have missing or garbled text, open terminal and kill the ATSSERVER process with the following command line (substitute in your user name):
    killall -u [YourUserName] ATSServer
    After running this command, ATSServer will relaunch right away. If you close the afflicted pdf file and reopen it all the fonts will display properly. I don't know why it happens, and I wish I could find the previous thread on this to thank the person who originally suggested that terminal command.
    Apple, this is a frustrating bug that needs attention.
    Thank you!

    Is there still interest in other details? My problem is that I may get the right font or another substituted generically; the documents always open OK in Adobe Acrobat 9, but in Preview (directly) or by Finder/spacebar I can get different appearances *each time* I open, in quick succession: parts of the document may have the correct, serif, font and others a generic substitution. I'm using documents I've written and compiled using TeXShop 2.26 / MacTex 2008
    Within a minute's interval, opening the same document three times can give different results, mixing the right and the substituted font in the one document, or sometimes only the substituted font.
    I'm not very familiar with the processes that should be running, but I was a bit surprised to find two instances of ATSServer at one time; perhaps this is normal spawn...?
    168 ATSServer marj 0.0 2 10.94 MB 704.14 MB Intel
    615 ATSServer _atsserver 0.0 2 3.94 MB 622.83 MB Intel
    I have screendumps at: http://public.me.com/mjbnks
    thanks in advance for any suggestions!

  • [SOLVED] X freezes after "exit"; can't kill X nor use the keyboard

    Hi!
    I've got a problem with my X server on my fresh installed Arch system. I followed the "Beginner's Guide" and edited the .xinitrd to start xterm for testing. This works well, but unfortunately X seems to freeze when I want go back to the shell via "exit" or when I want to change to another virtual console (Ctrl-Alt F1).
    When this happens, my screens go black and my keyboard doesn't work anymore, however I can log in via SSH. I can't kill X and the fourth core of my cpu is at 100%.
    This happens when I use a auto-configured xorg.conf from nvidia-xconfig (http://paste.pocoo.org/show/224004/) or when I use my "old" configuration from Ubuntu 9.10 (http://paste.pocoo.org/show/224005/). When I don't use the xorg.conf file at all, then X wont even start.
    I've got a Xorg.0.log from the test with the nvidia-xconfig generated xorg.conf: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/224002/ I can't see what's wrong here.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Can I change Font List preferences to not start from A...

    To explain further, previously in CS6 I could scroll from say "M" down to "R" no problem; whilst also seeing a preview. Now in CC, Say I'm using Meta and want to scroll down to say Rockwell - I have to start again from A (or my most recent fonts first). Its killing my time as I have to type the font name.
    Is there something in the preferences I can change as its starting to grate a bit.
    Cheers

    Unfortunately, the only method of resolving this notorious problem is for the person whose telephone number is erroneously registered with iMessage to contact Apple Support and request that their telephone number be deregistered.
