Killed extended attributes in Lion- now files are exec :(

Hey all.
I've been trying to migrate data to a new RAID setup, but have been running into the error code 36 issue where Mac created invisible files are killing the file transfers.
At any rate, I tried about three different directory cleanup utilities and for the most part got almost all the data to move. Now I'm onto the last bit which was giving me permissions errors as well.  I used Batchmod to make everything read write and I ALSO CLEARED THE XTARS. Worked like a charm and everthing transfered. HOWEVER...
Killing the extened attributes of the files turned them all into Executible files with no program ownership. BTW, there are font files so there are hundreds of them.
Is there anyway to re-assign them or get some of the attributes back?
Any help would be much appreciated.
thanks!

Those were old-style fonts with the data in the resource fork. By removing it, you destroyed them. Restore from backups.

  • Battery died and now files are lost

The battery doesn't last on my ibook, so it's constantly plugged in. Recently the plug quit working so the ibook was without power for I don't know how long. Now, all my files are gone. the main thing I want to retrieve is my iphoto library. Please, I hope someone can give me an idea how to find them.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Look in your Pictures folder for your iPhoto Library folder. If it's there look inside the iPhoto Library/Originals folder to see if you're full sized image files are in the subfolders. They should be. What probably happened is the loss of power corrupted the database file inside the library and when you open iPhoto it thinks there are no files.
If the above is correct then move the current iPhoto Library folder to the desktop. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library. When that library is open, drag the Originals folder from the library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window. This will create a new library with your photos and the same rolls that were in the old library. Unfortunately you'll lose your albums, keywords, comments, books, slideshows, etc. but you will have your photos back. To protect against similar corruption of the database file in the future see my Tip at the end of my signature.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Chose "encode selected video files" to create apple pro res, but only gave me audio. now files are gone.

Hello, I chose the "encode selected video files" from the finder to convert some H.264 files to Apple ProRes. It outputed only audio (but still as a .mov file). And I also selected to delete the source files after finished, so now the originals are gone and i'm left with only audio. is there any way to get back my original files?

Sounds like you selected Audio Only
If you regularly back up your system, you could locate the copy of the original file and restore it .

  • Had to reset but now files are lost and won't open

I was prompted this morning with wanting/needing to reset Firefox - something I never have never seen before. It was going thru my "old data" and froze. I needed to restart my iMac and in doing so now I can't open Firefox because it says: "Firefox cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible." I have the folder of my "Old Firefox Data" on my desktop. Have I lost everything? How do I get this back?

    Hello kuteelagirl
go to ~/Library folder (it is a hidden folder for your 10.8 mac, it is hidden for 10.7 and later mac) from :
Go > Go To Folder (Shift-Command-G) and in the dialog type: ~/Library
    '''''or'''''
Open the "Go" menu and hold down the Option key to make the Library appear
then find [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profiles.ini_file profiles.ini file] and rename it to profiles.iniOLD , then when you start firefox again, a new default profile folder will be created and only a single profile, the new "default", will be listed in the Profile Manager.
This new "default" profile doesn't contain any of the profile data or settings stored in your old "default" profile folder, which still exists but is no longer accessible from the Profile Manager.
Your existing Firefox user profile data, which includes bookmarks, passwords, cookies, preference settings and added extensions, will no longer appear in the new profile but you can [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox transfer the data from the old profile folder to the new default profile folder].

  • The files are on a volume that does not support Trash- Mountain Lion CC-Lr5

I'm trying to delete files in Lr5-CC and I'm running Mountain Lion My files are on an external portable HD.  I'm getting a message that says: "The files are on a volume that does not support Trash." Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it?  Thank you

    Hello,
This reply is months late, but hopefully it'll help you or someone else searching with this problem. I was having the same problem and found a way to get rid of it (permanently, it seems so far). The diagram below shows the steps I took in detail.
Note: This seems to especially be a problem if your photo files on the same disk as a Mac OS installation or bootable backup.
    Hope this helps:

  • IdM v7 and User Extended Attributes

I did a demo install of IdM version 7.1 and when I looked under debug and then list 'Configuration' objects,
I did not see 'User Extended Attributes' ?
I thought this comes as part of IdM in a very basic simple format ?
I've worked with IdM a fair amount, and don't every remember creating this file.
Can someone confirm this ( one way or the other ) ?
    TIA

The "IDM Schema Configuration" object is an IDM 8+ object only. The extended attributes have been completely changed between IDM 7 and IDM 8.
In IDM 7.1 the extended attributes are stored in the Configuration object called "User Extended Attributes". The initial import and set up of your repository should have created it. By default there's a few extended attributes (like idmManager, etc) that are set up. On a fresh install you won't find the file in the sample directory. It's only in the repository. You should be able to see it from the debug page or by extracting the XML object from the repository directly using the lh command line tool. If not then something might have screwed up in the installation.
However, the fact that you've got attributes called "IDMAttributeConfiguration" and "IDMObjectClassConfigurations" leads me to believe you've actually got an IDM 8 install, not an IDM 7 install. In which case, as Paul pointed out, your attributes are stored in the "IDM Schema Configuration" object. (Again, not found in the sample dir, only in the repository and is created on initial import.)

  • When I check my boot SSD drive using Disk Utility under Mavericks, I often get "Incorrect number of extended attributes" errors.  But if I boot off an external drive and check the same SSD, no errors are reported.  Is this a bug in Mavericks?

When I check my boot SSD drive using Disk Utility under Mavericks, I often get "Incorrect number of extended attributes" errors.  But if I boot off an external drive and check the same SSD, no errors are reported.
This happens not just with the SSD in my Mac Mini, but with another SSD in my MacBook (both now running Mavericks).  So far as I know, all of the kit I am using is in good order (despite the file corruption reports).  So I am beginning to wonder if it could be due to a bug in Mavericks?  Both SSD drives have been formatted to MacOS Extended (journaled) format.  Should I have used a different format, I wonder?
Has anyone else encountered this issue?
    Does anyone have a solution?
Or an explanation that might help my investigation of the issue?
    Thanks guys,

I understand that the Corsair Force 3 is not one of the SSD drives that are supported on Apple Macs.
I did try downloading and using Trim Enabler, but the error message came up both when it was off and when it was on.
I understand that not everyone thinks Trim Enabler is a good program, though there is a new version out now, so I may give it another try.

I had files stored on a hard drive that were not on my Mac. I used the hard drive for my first Time Machine back up, but it was not enough hard drive space to finish. Now those stored files are gone. Is there any way I can recover them?  No, they were not part of previous Time Machine backups, and I have checked both the hard drive the documents were lost on and the new one that I now use for backups. Any suggestions would be helpful, as the lost files are old pictures that are gone forever. :[ Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

  • No permission to copy file (to NAS with AFP support) - extended attributes?

For certain files that I copy from one of my drives to the NAS here (Synology 206j), ever since upgrading to Snow Leopard, Finder's behaviour has changed. It will simply refuse to copy the file, stating that "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."
The source is an external USB drive in Mac OS Extended format, I do have full permissions on the files and in any case the drive is set to ignore ownership.
The target is, like most NASes, in EXT3 format. It's sharing via its own AFP implementation.
I'd have tried repairing permissions, but for whatever reason, it's greyed out on my external drives. Since then I've figured that it was probably not that anyway, which will become apparent:
I tried copying the file via the terminal and it actually worked, but also gave an error: "cp: myfile: could not copy extended attributes to /Volumes/media backup/myfile: Operation not permitted"
This suggests to me that, as expected, the target volume doesn't support extended attributes. But rather than popping up with the message that Leopard did (something along the lines of "your target volume doesn't support extended attributes so your file's metadata may be lost, do you wish to continue") it just aborts instead.
I'm not sure if this is a Snow Leopard problem or a change that Synology need to catch up with. A workaround is to compress the file to ZIP first.
Thought I'd mention it here before trying to report it as a bug somewhere. Anyone else having similar issues, either with a NAS or some other storage, in which case please specify?

Thanks guys, yeah I've been monitoring the netatalk mailing list myself: they're onto the same problem, have come to the same conclusions about it being Extended Attributes and have much better proof of such than I
It looks like they're currently debating the best way to fix it (pretending to support EAs but sending them to a black hole being the quick and dirty way, but I suspect they'll go for implementation)
It'll be a while for sure, but the Synology guys are very good with Mac support so I'm sure they'll apply the update fairly quickly once the netatalk crew get something public. FWIW, I did detect a certain sense of urgency from the netatalk discussions.
Although it's essentially answered, I'll leave the question marked as unanswered in case Apple come up with a better one

  • Saved files as .PSD now they are "Windows Shell Common Dll" and won't open?

I am having a problem with opening some files in Photoshop. I am using Photoshop CS5.1 Extended (Version 12.1) and have Windows 7 64 bit SP1 OS.
I am trying to open a few templates I made in PhotoShop for a client and they worked fine when I used them 3 weeks ago. All were saved as .psd documents. Now when I go to open them they no longer have the PS icon (to show they would be opened by PhotoShop). When I try to open them I get "Could not complete your request because it is not the right type of document." I have had this problem once before but it is confusing to me because 2 of the other similar .psd files I saved at the same timeframe(separate elements for the temlate) are perfectly fine, only the ones I need do not want to open.
I checked file properties and it claims these files are now Windows Shell Common Dll files. Any ideas?

I guess you were able to open them in photoshop with open as.
In the future you should probably try to avoid using periods in the image file names other than for the file type extension.
You could use - or_ in place of the periods as in VotePedia Invoice 1_5_13  or VotePedia Invoice 1-5-13
Also, as Noel suggested, going into Control Panel>Appearace and Personalization>Folder Options>View
and unchecking Hide extensions for known file types will help as well.
