Killed My K7N2

Well I was overclocking my bros rig, an xp 2500+ to 200 fsb, set the rest on high performance mode and put the voltage to 1.7v I think. Stock is 1.65v. I was running Prime95 on torture test for 10 - 15 mins and cpu was at 51-54C I went to toilet and straight after I had, my bro said it shut down and smelt burning. It’s only a really old shitty 300W PSU with 10A on the 12V and pc alert said it was like 11.40 I think on the 12V and like well under on the 3.3v. It won't boot but the cpu fan and case fan leds flash for a second that’s all it does when you try to turn it on. Then you have to turn power off and on to get them to flash again when you try and boot. And yes I cleared the cmos already.
Is it the PSU or is it my worse nightmare - Mobo or CPU. It can't be cpu, its really between mobo and PSU, I have my money on PSU what you guys think? I try a new 500W cheaply I have.

Make a sig listing everything in the system.  11.4 volts on the 12volt rail is on the low side.  Also list the specs for the power supply.  3.3v-5v-12v amperages.  That magma power supply may cause you problems.  Forget about the watts that it supposedly produces, that means nothing.  It is the amps per rail that counts.
I know the watts mean nothing but the Amps on the 12v rail are like 17 or 19 one of the three and it’s not a very demanding system. I am not sure if PC Alert (after all it is made by MSI) is reading the voltages wrong on the 12v, I will try Speedfan later
The Gear will be
Amd 2500 XP, overclocked to 2.2-2.6MHz I am hoping
Ati 9600 SE 128 modded and overclocked to max
MSI K7N2
1 GB of crucial DDR 400(I think) rams which I will just most probably set to high performance
Just a standard IDE drive and Floppy and dual layer DVD drive.
And the cpu coolers not too bad, I can't put any AS5 on it as I will have to drop out the PSU to get it off and I can't be bothered with that. It is about 35-40C on prime95 max heat torture test at stock speeds.
Are there any good bios for overclocking/benchs for this board then chaps?

  • K7N2 BIOS Update killed GeForce4 memory?

I just did the most recent update for my K7N2.  It helped with the temps, but now Windows sees the GEForce4 4400 as a 64mb card instead of a 128mb card.  The original BIOS post from the Card is still right (when PC first boots), but Windows sees it differently.
    Any ideas why?
I have already tried uninstalling drivers, updating chipset drivers, etc...
    thanks,
    timbiotic

installing drivers on top of drivers is probably what hosed it, go to http://www.driverheaven.net and get the utilty called "Driver Cleaner"
First, Use the uninstall software from control panel to remove the VGA drivers. don't reboot
Then install and run the utility, click on the "clean" button several times.
Then reboot, go into safe mode, the Found New Hardware wizard should show up, don't cancel it, just navigate to where you have the drivers and launch the installation, the rest should take care of itself.
If you had MSI's drivers installed, you will have to go into the windows directory and delete the file "msicpl.dll" that is the file that installs MSI's clock tabs, you don't need them as you should use the Coolbits registry fix for clock settings within nVidia's control panel. This will replace MSI's clock settings adjustment tabs should you desire them.

  • [nForce] K7N2 Delta-ILSR ...did i kill my motherboard??????

ok i have K7N2 Delta-ILSR and i moving my computer from my bedroom to my basment because of construction and when i went to plug my computer into my apc powerbar the plug didnt go all the way in the socket and then a flash of electricty, when seeing this i wasn't sure what to think so i went ahead and pluged it into the powerbar socket next to it, then when i hit power button on my computer it gets power but wont post and the D-Bracket that came with my board that has diagnostic LEDs is saying " Memory Detection Test " i tried changing my stick of ram(Samsung PC3200 512mb DDR400) from all the slots and the same results then i tried a stick of corsair ram and the same results. I also tried clearing cmos, and having my settings on safe mode.

You did unplug the power supply before clearing the CMOS right?

  • K7N2 Delta ILSR Takes forever to boot.

    Specs:
    K7N2 Delta ILSR Mobo
    Athlon xp 2500
Kingston Hyper X 2700 DDR 512mb (its on the list)
Geforce 2MX 32mb AGP videocard (I dont play games)
    3 Com 56k Win Modem
    IBM GXP120 60 gig ata133 Hard drive
    Pine 12X DVD drive
    LG 24x10x48 CD Burner
    Antec 300W power supply
The problem is that it takes forever to install and boot windows with faster processors for some reason. I origianlly built this system with my old Athlon 1.33 and it had these problems.  I then tried a 900mhz athlon and it worked great, so I figured I damaged my 1.33 somehow.  I ordered a 2500+ and a zalmann cpu cooler and now am back to where I was, when the system starts it  seems very unstable and the screen goes blank for 10 minutes while its booting.  It shows about 3 seconds of the starting windows screen then the screen will go blank for a while anf there will be no hard drive activity then it will come back about 10 minutes later and then boot.  Sometimes the system will work fine then sometimes I cant even open my computer i just get the searching flashlight icon where my drives should be.  I have updated to the lastet BIOS.  Also while installing windows I get ocasional long pauses where it is doing nothing at all then it will just magically conitnue and do it in a fashion I would expect a machine of this speed to do.

Hmm not sure about the cable position on the CD drives, ill have to check that when I get home.  All the jumpers are set correcly, and the hard drive is all by itself and its on the right connector.  Thanks for the ideas, this problem is really killing me, I havent had these kind of hardware problems in years.  The thing I dont get is why it works good with the 900mhz and not with the 1.33 or 2500+

  • K7N2 Delta ILSR won't turn off, just restarts

K7N2 Delta ILSR won't turn off, just restarts.  Every time I click on "Turn off computer" in Windows XP, it shuts down, but restarts again. Could this be OS related, or perhaps Bios related. My other machine, almost identical to this one, except that the other machine has BIOS rev 7.6 and this one 7.2.

PSUs seem to be yr favorite subject, but I'm afraid this time it's software. I experimented some more as the problem only occured after installing the Nvidia drivers. Comparing the system settings in the device manager before installing drivers and after installing them, reveils that the problem shows up when AGP HOST TO PCI BRIDGE is installed. When killing this item the PC shuts off properly. Unfortunately when turning back on, Windows automatically reinstalls the PCI bridge and I have the problem again. LOOKS LIKE A MSI SOFTWARE PROBLEM !
By the way I have a PCI graphics board and not AGP in the failing PC (the good one has AGP graphics).
    Now what?

  • K7N2 & ATi AIW9700Pro = No go ??

ok, just bought a new GFX card, the Sapphire All-In-Wonder 9700 Pro card..   plugged it in...   turned the machine on and almost instantly the machine powers down, then I have to remove the powercord from the PSU to be able to try another power cycle....
did a lot of testing, removed all other devices, still same
tried it in 2 other machines, one other with the K7N2, and the Epox 8RDA3+ (nforce2 also)  = nogo
But the card works fine in a KT266 (MSI) board I tried and 2 P4 machines I tried ???
so it looks to my like the AIW + nforce2 = NoGo ???  ;(
    any ideas/help?
    regards
    fFletchs

well, searching other forums I have seen a LOT of people with this issue and it seems only to affect the All-In-Wonder card, not the standard 9700 and 9800 cards.
And its always a combination of a nforce2 board, AIW card and a highend PSU, Antec's or Enermax's....
Apparently there is a failsafe in the PSU which kicks in and shuts the machine down, people have been putting in old 300W PSU and then they can boot(cheap PSU dont have this failsafe ?), but I don't want to do that since it would probably kill my overclocking adventures...
I have been unable to get any help from ATi, MSI, Epox (also have an epox nforce2 board) or Antec, all say their component is fine, which is true but this is combination of things...
This is obiously an known issue but I have not seen a solution, one way to boot is to not connect the extra power connector until maybe 1-2 secs after turning the machine on...
My hardware info is in the sig...
    Just see this thread
Some people have also been replacing there boards for an Asus A7N8 I think its called, an Nforce2 boards which doesn't have this problem...
If I dont find a solution within couple of days then I'm about to replace my mobo and cpu and go intel i guess, which is $$$ I was not planning to spend  :(
    please help me!

Also, what are new MBs doing so that one doesnt have to deal with this annoying F-6 step?  For some reason I think I heard new MBs dont require this F-6 step.
for his mobo, the drivers are absolutely necessary to be loaded when SATA HDD are used. that is due onboard sata controller.

  • K7N2 Delta2 Problems?

I've just returned from my local computer shop with a replacement K7n2 Delta2 motherboard for my machine. I've put everything back together and booted up and I got a failure detecting the floppy drive - no big issue there, there's no floppy drive on my machine. So, I went into the bios, disabled the floppy drive, set the correct time on the motherboard, saved the settings and exited the bios setup and rebooted - now it fails the POST and I get a single green LED on the bracket (top left) and the rest are all red - I've just returned one of these boards to the computer shop because it was definitely dead, and I doubt they will accept that this board is dead as well. I've used the cmos reset jumper, removed the battery and rebuilt the system from the ground upwards, but nothing seems to work...
Any suggestions as to the caause of the problem and what I can do to repair it - or is it something on my system that's killing the motherboard?

I'm running the system on the absolute minimum of normal load - just the processor, one 256meg ram, primary HDD and the graphics cards - no other components in there at all, so I can't really see the power being that much of an issue. I'll have a look at the CPU tomorrow and see if there's anything there that stands out as being definitely wrong, but when I had a quick look earlier it seemed to be fine, same with the various cards I checked. I'll have a look through the slots as well and see if there's anything there which stands out as being out of place.
I've removed and refitted the mobo in the case a few times now, so pretty sure there's nothing there that is causing the problems either.
Thanks for all the suggestions tho' - to be honest it looks like I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and buy a completely new system, which is something I really can't afford at the moment, but needs must and all that....

  • K7n2 + 7600GT/6800GT = only hour of work

    HI there all
Couple days ago I bought Leadtek 6800GT 256MB AGP. I've plugged card in and start playing witch 3dmark01se, 3dmark03 and then hang! I've rebooted and see green stripes in boot time, card didn't start in windows. I've send card back.
Then I have bought Leadtek 7600GT 256MB AGP and similar thing has happened. Computer hang up after about a hour of working. Card passed 3dmark 01 and 03 and hang in the middle of downloading file from www. After reboot monitor doesn't start, d-bracket post stoped at test 7 (Processor Initialization), I didn't hear any beep and system doesny apear to be continue starting.
In any of this case i didn't see any other instability, old card was working normal, cpu was overclocked from ~1917 to ~2174 (return to normal values didn't helped), cards had molex plugged in. I've sent back 7600gt.
    Who is the killer ?

There is nothing more. It has onboard lan but no other things like soundstorm or firewire and probably it don't support dual channel.
    Number from manual: G52-M6570X1
    BIOS is 5.9 (latest)
Also I forget to mention that I checked 7600GT in my other PC (Celeron2.13) after hang and card was behaving exactly the same
use Everest to identify your mobo: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=100852.msg734468#msg734468
based on your info you should have Delta L. all delta's support dual channel. do you have SATA ports on the mainboard?
"Also I forget to mention that I checked 7600GT in my other PC (Celeron2.13) after hang and card was behaving exactly the same"
try with AGP 1st, you can turn off AGP fastwrites to gain more stability also, ensure your VGA has plugged power cable from the PSU directly to VGA.
if you use other other VGA your PC didnt hang, is that correct?
ensure you have installed chipset drivers also 1st, then latest nvidia drivers.

  • K7N2 board posts but has no beep

My k2n2 mother board posts fine, but there is no post beep. I have checked the speaker, and it works fine, but just wont make a post beep. Is this a good enough reason to get another motherboard, or should I just keep the one I have. Just wondering if it could potentially point to other problems that might pop up later.

In itself I would not consider a lack of noise a problem worth returning the board for. Many people would kill for your problem.  :D
I don't have a K7N2, but I would suggest that you page through the BIOS for it looking for entries to turn warning buzzers etc. on and off. You may have that option.

  • More K7N2 Delta ILSR issues

After resolving many issues I've got with my K7N2 Delta ILSR (I still have no regret because I choose it over Abit or Epox), there are still some problems I could not overcome:
    1. the system cannot resume standby (it goes in S1 or S3, but hangs when resuming before any image appears on monitor)
    2. at a freq when I have stability with default vcore, raising vcore is producing instability (system freeze when running prime95)
    3. system temp reported by mbm -last version- seems high: 48-52 degrees; the proc temp is always 4 degrees -no more, no less- higher
My specs: K7N2 Delta ILSR, Barton 2600@2170Mhz (10.5x206)  cooler master aero 7+,

  • URGENT! I need K7N2 delta help

I am about to return my board but wanted to see if anyone could help me before I send it back.  Here it goes...
It seems my new Saphire Radeon 9800 pro 128mb card is not reacting well with my K7N2 Delta.  When I play any type of game I can play for a certain amount of time then all of a sudden my computer just completely shuts off like I hit the power button.  It doesnt go through a normal shutdown, It just turns off instantly!!
The only way I can get my comp to go back on is by switching the power supply off, then back on then it will boot up.  I know its not the power supply because I tried a 430 watt antec power supply with same result.
I put in my old geforce 4 ti 4600 in and I can play any game without my comp being shut down. So  that leads me to believe its the graphic card or the mobo not working with my graphic card.
I have the original bios that came with the board and I am running the newest nforce drivers and newest catalyst drivers.  Any help would be appreciated.

    HI,
Chelch: Although flashing the BIOS can be a little nerve racking (especially on your first attempt) you should have no problems. There is a risk of killing your board - but as far as I'm aware this is relatively rare.
As long as you know exactly what you are doing - flashing the BIOS can be a breeze.
If you do decide to flash - read up on the procedure as much as you can before attempting it. If you have any doubts about the process then read up some more or ask somebody - the web's full of places where you can get help on this subject.
A good place to start is here:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/service/forum/index.php?threadid=69&sid=
Be aware also, that flashing may not solve your present problem and you may be be putting your board at risk for no reason. My advice, is to follow other poster's advice until you run out of options - then you can consider it.
Having said all this - if you are still unsure - it may be a good idea to "Let them deal with it" as GlennVidia says in his post.
Good luck, and let us know if and how you manage to fix it!
    Axel

  • K7N2 powerdown nightmare

This is a long one, so I am grateful, in advance to anyone with the patience to read it.
I have recently upgraded to a K7N2-L mobo and am having an absolute nightmare with random power downs. It seems to be OK in Windows and DVD playback but any 3D aps kill my machine after about 10 minutes.
I had a similar poblem with an Asus A7V8X that always hanged after about 30 seconds, so I changed to a mobo with an Nvidia2 chipset.
Now I get a little extra time but it still chews. My full system spec is as fllows:
    Athlon WP 2200+
    MSI K7N2-L
    512M Corsair 3200 XPS
    Hercules Prophet 9700Pro
    Maxtor 60Gb ATA 133
    Sonic Fury
    Windows Xp Pro-SP1
I have instaled all the most recent drivers; hercules, nvidia and video logic and BIOS. (all as of 2/3/03)
I thought that it was the Radeon to begin with( on the Asua  mobo) but it tested fine for the whole of 3Dmark on a Gigabyte Mobo. I know about the compatability problems that have arisen with the Radeon 9700/9500 so I changed to an Nvidia chipset, it didn't work.
Here is a list of all the things that have failed and some other misc. info.
    Memtest86 v 3. 6 hours-0 faults
    Mobo temp 35.0C
    CPU temp 45-49C

I have tried all the suggestions provided by Hercules, which amount to turning all VGA related BIOS options off, reduciong AGP speed to 4X and increasing AGP voltage to 1.6.
I have tried under clocking the VGA card, the processor and the RAM.( And each individualy).
I have tried every combination of RAM and AGP volts.
I have tried many variations of BIOS settings including those suggested by ATI and Hercules.
My only clue is that underclocking - either the processor or the VGA card provides a precious extra 2 or 3 minutes of 3D time! Oh the joy.
All the bits are newish, in the last 3 months. The system worked fine with a Radeon 64M DDR, but that was back with the Asus.
Does any one have any ideas? Should I demand a more lenghty test of the 3D card? Should I become mad at MSI for any incompatability issues( they have tested the Radeon 9700PRO)? Should I become very mad at the injustice of having a computer that refuses to work despite weeks of tinkering?
    Please help me.
    Cheers.
    IMMM

I never manually installed the mac-adress, but the mac-adress showed up anyway when I checked ipconfig/all in cmd. I called customer support to check my internet connection and they couldn't get any connection with my LAN through the mac-adress. Later I put in a pci-network card and it worked super. But the built-in LAN did not work.
I would try the memtest if I could but the computer now shuts down after about 30 seconds, leaving little time to do anything. It even shuts down in bios so it seems to be a hardware-problem. My PSU is brand new, True Power 480W so that shouldn't be a problem. I first connected my mainboard with my old 350W PSU but it broke down after a couple of minutes (is that normal with a 350W-PSU?). That's why I bought the 480 W. My CPU-cooler is approved for AMD XP 2600 in silent mode and my CPU is an AMD XP 2200. Even though I have the CPU-fan on max speed the system shuts down. I checked the temp (50-55C) with AMD, they say their processors run at up to 90 C! Could it be that my mainboard is to temperature-sensitive? Or maybe it's the memory, either way I've packed down everything I bought and I'll send it to the store as soon as I get their confirmation. I just want to get rid of it now, it's caused me enough worry allready. I've spent two weeks trying to figure out what was wrong and now I want to go on with my life ;-)

  • K7N2 Delta lock ups

    Hi there,
I've got a MSI k7N2 Delta sitting in my PC atm. But with a nasty problem. I have to keep the cpu sitting in it (AMD Barton 3000) underclocked for me to use my PC for more then 40 mins at a time. After that time, it just freezes, and the sound card (not system speaker) emits a nasty high pitched sound. Using a more intensive game, i.e. planetside speeds up the process, somethimes running for a mere 5 mins. To use the pc atm, the cpu is clocked at 1.4Ghz, instead of the over 2ghz it should be at.
    Any suggestions anyone?
    Specs:
    K7N2 Delta
    AMD Barton 3000+
512Mb Kingston DDR (on compatibilty list)
    ATI Radeon 7500
    SB! 128
    Antec 400Watt PSU

ok, after some more testing (man i love CS  ) it still locks up, but it took longer initially. It now just freezes, with no beeeep from the sound card. It may be temperature related though, as after the intial freeze, it will now only take a few minutes before it does it again. Straight after it freezes I'm getting temperature of around 50 on all monitors.
Ill whip out that TV card and give it a whirl now
