Kin onem- daughter wants -is this a good phone?

Hi, I am a first time user so please be patient. My daughter has a Samsung Intensity and now wants to upgrade to a Kin Onem. I, however, am technically stupid. Is this a good phone to get? I believe she wants a decent camera, touchscreen and maybe internet. I heard she could get this option for free on this phone.
She gets Itunes a lot, texts a lot and does take pictures. I think the internet is the main factor this time....Is there a better one (phone) or another one with free service or is this a good choice for her? Also, do you know if you can purchase this phone in the store or do you have to order it and have it shipped in? I also read you have to enter all your contacts. Is this true?
What are the pluses and minuses for this phone in "simple" English! Thanks.

Yes, this is a good phone. That is the short and easy answer. I am assuming you are looking for a phone that does not require a data plan (that costs extra). Other smartphones are MUCH better, but require that data plan, so if you do get data, do not get this phone. Get and android, windows 7 phone, blackberry, etc. But this is the ONLY phone w/out data.
Like said above, i would recommend the Twom over the Onem, simply because it has the larger screen, more memory, better camera, etc. But, that is all personal preference, if your daughter would rather have a squarish, smaller phone, then the Kin Onem is better suited.. My personal flavor is, i like the longer, rectangular phone shape, i am much more familiar with it, and it fits the hand better. The Kin Onem is $20, and the Twom is $50 with a new line/plan/contract, but for a one-time charge, that really isn't that much and is worth it in my opinion (and if you qualify for the 'new every two', you get $100 towards a single phone, that is how i got one of these for free).
This phone is sold in stores, but they do not have them out on the 'floor' in most, if not all stores. I only imagine that it is sold in actual verizon stores, not resellers such as bestbuy, mall stands, etc. I got mine in stores last week, but i had to ask them specifically for what i wanted. They had a test device, but they had to charge it up int he back room before i could play with it. Many believe that they are just trying to clear out their inventory of devices from the first time around, when they sold less than 60,000 devices, but i think they have alternative plans too. I hope they are seeing if they sell or not (and if more people knew about a non-data phone with wifi, they would sell like crazy in my opinion), and if they do, then they will re-start production of hte phone, market it, and most importantly, add support for the software/firmware and provide updates to fix its problems.
You heard right, this phone does not support backup assist at the moment (transferring contacts application from verizon). However, some (it should be all in the near future) stores have recieved system updates that allow them to transfer contacts with a hard-wire connection from your old phone to the new Kin, you would just have to ask your local store if they have recieved the update. I have learned, be very specific when talking to sales reps, know what you want, sound confident, and then they will help you. Most sales reps do not know all the details, but what do you expect, their main job is to sell phones (although it would actually boost their numbers if they made sure all employees provided good customer support..hint verizon). At worst, they will have to contact their manager/supervisor and they will hopefully be more helpful.
Long story short, this phone has wonderful features.
-8 MP camera
-720p HD video
-very responsive, well built capacitive touchscreen
-full QWERTY keyboard
-full Zune music/video player
-FM radio
-and most importantly, Wifi
You will have to manually block data if you do not want any charges appearing, but that is not too hard, and it saves any headaches of a ridiculous phone bill (without a data plan, you by default sign up for a pay-per-use plan, at a ridiculous $1.99 per MB rate..thats about $2 per webpage browsed). That is explained in my review/FAQ (linked below). This phone was originally released at the beginning of the summer as a smartphone, with an emphasis on social networking, and it failed miserably, so Microsoft/verizon have rebuilt its software and released it as a feature phone.
The physical quality of this phone isn't top notch, but it is relatively sturdy. The front portion of the phone, the touchscreen, is built very well, with high-quality plastic that does not feel like it will break, even with a few accidental drops. The back (battery cover), however, does feel weak, and is made from a slippery, thin plastic. That is nothing that a case can't fix, though, and they sell for as low as $4 ($1+ $3 shipping..so if you do order online, purchase screen protectors and other things all at once, because the shipping costs much more than the actual case).  The phone hinge is decent, it has a quality-spring action to it, but there is a little wobble in the hinge (although the spring almost completely covers that up). The keyboard keys are 'clicky', and responsive, it has a quick repeat time on keys, which i really like.
The biggest issue with this phone is not the actual phone, it is the abundance of firmware bugs/poor design and quality check before it was released. It all depends on if your daughter will be bugged enough to not like this phone, despite its awesome features.  I am hopeful that microsoft will release firmware updates to fix these issues, but if not, many of them have work-arounds and aren't that big of a deal anyways. So, yes it does have those problems that you see other people talking about, but they are very minor compared to how nice of features you get with the phone. Some of the major bugs/poor software quality include:
-backup assist (transferring contacts) does not work
-no forwarding messages
-can't delete individual messages
-volume buttons don't lock when phone is locked
-can't delete or rename ringtones
-etc.
I have created a more detailed, albeit VERY long, full review of the device, its quirks, pro's, and fixes/workarounds. If you have time for some heavy reading, or want more information, here it is:
http://community.vzw.com/t5/KIN/Kin-TwoM-Review-FAQ-Q-amp-A-troubleshooting-etc/td-p/347662
I hope you find the best device for your daughter. I can provide my opinions, and i love this phone, but get the phone that she would like the most.

  • N95 Is this a good phone?

I'm about to get an N95 as my new phone and I want to know is it good, or are there any problems that I should be aware of.
    Thanks

    N95-1(classic)
if you can get your phone updated to version 21 firmware i dont think youll have any problems as it works seamlessly on this version
as for battery life i am a HEAVY user. music nearly all day lots of wifi interet browsing calls and texts
the battery lasts me til early morning the next day before i have to charge it....
what im trying to say the battery life depends alot on your usage.
with the v21 fw the classic n95 battery life is comparable to that of the 8GB version so it wont make much of a difference battery wise
secondly is 8GB enough for you? as the classic n95 can accept an 8GB card and will/should be able to accept up to 32GB cards in the future(16gb cards are on the way) so if youre like me who loves to watch movies while travellng may not 8gb will be enough
lastly camera cover...the 8GB version has no lens cover whereas the classic does....
in my opinion the classic n95 is the better of the choices unless you are willing to wait for the n96 release whenever that is......

  • DO NOT Get The Service With This Company IF You Want to Receive a Good Customer Service

It is really a pain, dissatisfaction, and a lot more when you have Verizon as your service provider. I have been having service for my cellphones with Verizon for over 3 years, and did not have any major problems, so when I moved to my new place I thought it’s better to get the Fios, and have one bill for my all Verizon services. I went online and started to order my products online. During ordering, the chat session opened and I started chatting with the Customer Service Rep in order to get help through the process. When we were in the step that I could order the home phone plan, I saw the International World Plan, and I asked the lady to give me some information about this plan. I asked her that I want to call to my country and I mentioned my country’s name to her as well. I asked her that if this service is available for my country, and she said “Yes” you can call to over 100 countries with this service and she encouraged me to get the 300 minutes service. Since the plan sounded good to me I decided to get the 500 minutes instead of 300 min, and after I ordered my plan, I started calling overseas, and happy that I am paying less than the Phone cards with this plan. On March 26 I received my bill, and saw that Verizon charged me 142 $ for the less than 200 minutes that I called to my country, and there was a Letter “N” in front of each phone calls. I checked the guide to see what does “N” mean, and I saw that it said N means “Denoted calls are NOT listed in World Plan”. Well, thanks to the lady who gave me the wrong information while I was ordering my plan online, but she or the Verizon company is not that much lucky because I printed my chat session the day I ordered my plan since I wanted to have the information of what I actually had ordered. That time I did not think that I may get in trouble like this. Since March 27th, I have been calling Verizon every other day, and I have explained my issue to more than 10 Customer Service Reps, and each of them asked me to fax my chat session to them. I have been faxing that to all the numbers that they gave me, and I am keep faxing them, but do not get any respond. One of the Verizon’s Supervisors, whose name is Mark, called twice on my home phone number during the daytime, around 3 pm, and he left massages. On his second massage, he said that he checked the plan and my country is not listed in the International World Plan. He just said this, and he said that he was going to call me back, but never happened. He also did not leave me any phone number that I could call back. Also, since my cellphones are listed in the same bill as my other products, he could easily see the other numbers that he could call and reach me, but he did not bother himself to do so. I have even changed my home voice mail greeting addressing to Verizon, and left my cellphone number in voice mail greeting. I am so sorry that I have to say this, but this seems a definite fraud to me. I did not know about this plan, and I asked the Customer Service Rep to help me. She was responsible to check my country, or at least let me know how I could find out about the coverage. This is ridiculous, and if Verizon cannot take over this problem, my lawyer will take the action over, and takes the issue to their corporate court. I am not going to give up about this, and I decide to give Verizon about a week or so to solve this issue, but I won’t wait more than that. Just a friendly advice to people who want to get the home service through Verizon: DO NOT Get The Service With This Company IF You Want to Receive a Good Customer Service. There is nothing about taking care of customer in this company, and you are going to be stuck with what you get.

    Mahsa21,
We are glad that we were able to resolve the international calling plan issue for you.  If you need assistance, please  reach out to us.
    thanks,

help!!! My tech savvy on a scale of 1-10 is a straight up 1. And a half.. Anyways.. Is this a good buy? It's on amazon.. Do you think that's a trustworthy place to. It from?

That's good to know... has not being able to update really hindered you? I understand that a lot of Mac users want Apple because they do a bunch of editing and graphic designing... I am not at all into that. I am a Physical Education major (aka: a lot of essays!!), and I write as a hobby. So that is all I want this computer for. What do you think??

  • HT2688 my daughter wants to move some of her music she bought on itunes for her shuffle to her new ipod touch.  how do i get this done?

my daughter wants to move some of her music she bought on itunes for her shuffle to her new ipod touch.  how do i get this going?

The music should still be in her iTunes Library - the one she uses to put music on the Shuffle. Simply connect the new iPod to that iTunes library, make the choices she wants for syncing the music to the iPod (which I guess, may now include putting all her music onto the iPod, since it has more storage capacity) and press Sync.
Future Syncs with that Library will cause any changes of the Library to be copied to the iPod. Note that music is (or should be) copied to the iPod, not moved. There are two reasons for having the music in the Library:
    makes it easier to put the music onto a newer iPod, such as now;
if or when the iPod needs a Restore, which will delete everything from the iPod, you will need to copy "the Library" back onto the same iPod.

  • My laptop (win7 2ghz, 1gig) has 100% cpu usage with itunes installed (even when not running itunes) since the upgrade.  i had to uninstall.  tried installing but still the same problem.  my daughter wants the new ipad, but this is a serious problem.

when itunes upgraded my laptop went to 100% cpu usage.  only solution was uninstall.  have tried itunes again as my daughter wants the new ipad.  still same problem tho so not keen to spend £400 on new pad without pc support.  anyone help?  (ps been using ipod touches 1 and 2, been great source of pleasure for my two girls, but cant sync them, so using the little shuffles for music, syncing to an old version of itunes on an old netbook - had the sense to switch off upgrades when the new version went wrong)

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

I was surfing the web and got tricked into downloading MacProtector.  It says my system is infected!  Of course they want almost $80 to register the program so I can then use it to clean up my machine.  Is this a good program??  Should I get something like Norton antivirus instead??

Yes, turning off Javascript works, but turning it on and off is a pain if one has to make a trip to the preferences.
Why many recommend the NoScript Add-on as one can drag a "allow" button to Firefox's toolbar and turn on scripts on a site per site, case per case basis.
NoScript also protects against other web nasties, like Clear click jacking and zillions of other web based trickery.
    http://noscript.net/changelog
Apple Support Forums works fine without Javascript running, I do it all the time, it also supports HTTPS encrpytion too.
It might be that I'm not seeing a lot with Javascript and other things turned off, but the post box functions etc. work just fine.
Maybe Apple is heading towards no scripts running on all their products?
First Flash gets the axe, then Java is coming next and perhaps finally Javascript? hmmmm?
    Smart move possibly.
Nope it's the same with it on or off.

  • Kin ONEm--email syncing problem

I have a Kin ONEm, and I use email and the Web browser over a WiFi connection. A week or two ago, I started having trouble with the "Email" app (which I have synced to my yahoo email account). When I select "Email", my inbox starts to come up, but then it inexplicably takes me back to the main screen without showing me my inbox.
I have tried to see if I could fix this by deleting this email account from my email settings (with the intention of adding it back in and seeing if it would work then), but it just tells me it is "Deleting & signing out..." but it never finishes doing that.
For now I have been able to get around this problem by checking email through the browser, but I was hoping to eventually get the email issue fixed.
I read a post from someone else who was having this trouble and "fixed" it by going to a Verizon store and having the person reset their phone. I don't want to do that and lose all my contacts and other settings, so if there is a better fix, please let me know.

Oh my goodness...Christina, I'm happy you're trying to help out, but please don't assume that things that would work on most other VZW phones will work on the KIN.  Unless I'm mistaken, two of the three suggestions you gave will not work.
    1) When I connect my KIN to my computer (Widows Vista), the only thing that will recognize it is the Zune software.  It does not show up as a normal USB drive that you can simply copy files to/from.   Now Zune will certainly allow Erink to transfer his photos, videos, and music.  However, I don't know of a way to use it to transfer contacts, which is what he said he was most interested in.
If you know of a driver that will let us use the KIN as a simple attached drive, please let us know.  On the other hand, I do recall in some previous topics here that some Verizon stores have the ability to backup and restore contacts on the KIN.  But you have to go into the store to do that -- and find store personnel that know about it.
    2) Your suggestion to forward text messages to an e-mail address would be fine -- if the KIN had the ability to forward texts.  It does not.  The only way to do that is to take a screen shot of each "conversation", then you could transfer the resulting jpg images to your computer using Zune.  You'd wind up with a bunch of jpg images which you might be able to read, but you couldn't really restore them as text messages.
Once again, we appreciate that VZW reps try to help out here -- but please be more careful to ensure that your advice is valid for the device in question.
If I'm wrong about any of the above, you have my apologies.
    Thanks.

  • KIN Onem

I am getting the KIN onem just waiting for it to arrive I am very excited about getting it..I wanted the kin tell but they didn't have anymore in stock n needed one asap so went with the onem.
I heard you need a data plan for the email app is this true? I plan on using my wifi quite a bit as I have it at home and is nice not to have to use the computer all the time. Is the browser on these thing good?
I am also worried about getting charged data how can I block data so it don't charge me if I block data will it block me from my wifi and picture messages and All that?
Just anything you cAn telll me would be great!

I do not need the e-mail app for the KIN.  I just signed into my IMAP account using the settings on the app that came with the phone and it syncs beautifully to my computers using wi-fi only.  I have all data blocked from Verizon so I cannot access anything online without wi-fi on.
I also missed having a notes feature so I have created a folder in my e-mail called "NOTES".  It also syncs with my computer.  So, I can have shopping lists, to do lists or whatever "NOTES" I need using e-mail as a notes app.  Once it syncs I have my NOTES with me without needing wi-fi or data.
You do need to go online at verizon and block everything except pix/video messaging.  This process is explained in a lot of threads.  It will save you from racking up data fees if you're on a tight budget and don't have a data plan.
The ONEm is a cute little phone!  I almost got one but my reading vision is impaired so I lucked out and got probably one of the last TWOm's.  Mine is less than a week old.  So far I LOVE it even though I need reading glasses to use it!   My iPod Touch is staying home more and more.

  • Is the Kin Onem just out of stock?

I was on the verizon wireless website yesterday and was looking for possible basic phones that I might purchase. The kin onem was listed but just said it was "temporaily out of stock." I then looked today, and it was no longer listed. Is that because it is only out of stock or is verizon planning on not selling it anymore?

my daughter wanted this phone and it was pulled from the verizon page the day before her upgrade! I called everywhere trying to find one. I ended up buying a new one from Ebay. So far it is working fine.

  • Kin OneM being Charged for Data

Ok so I bought a Refurbished Kin OneM on ebay for my daughter for christmas because she loves the Zune experience on the phone. I actiavated the phone and all was well until I checked my account online. The phone is registered as a Kin One, not a Kin OneM and is being charged $29 a month for data. Why is this? It is running Kin OneM software. I have no idea what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

    Good afternoon Baserunner65.
This doesn't seem like a pleasant experience with this device.  (Personally, I would be confused and frustrated.)  I know it was purchased on eBay, but did the phone come in the original box?  If so, the Electronic Serial Number, (ESN) should match with the phone.  Does it say anywhere on the Kin if it's a One or Onem?  (Maybe when you remove the battery.)  If it is a Kin One and not a Kin Onem, the data plan will not be able to be removed.  What you can do, is send me a Private Message with the ESN, or MEID, and I will be happy to look into this for you to see if the data plan can be removed.
    Thank you,

  • Kin Onem and 3G service

I'm tyring to identify a way to disable 3G service on the Kin Onem. I have disabled roaming through the phone, I have blocked data service through verizonwireless.com, but I cannot figure out how to disable 3G serivce (the 3G indicator is still showing next to the wifi indicator). I know there is an airplane mode, but I do not want to disable the other functions. I just want to be able to use the Internet when I want without worrying about data charges. Any suggestions?

When you block data services, it makes it so your phone cannot send and recieve data. The 3G icon will still remain there, but you shouldn't actually ever be able to connect to it. That is assuming you (more like the verizon rep, if you did it in-stores or over the phone) blocked data correctly. Just use it sparingly the first month, then check the bills and make sure there are no charges (note that if you used backup assist at any point..even though this phone doesn't support it, the verizon rep did it for me..that will add about half a MB of data). Another check, try to connect to the internet with wifi turned off. No pages should load. Note, that common pages, like Google's search page, can be saved in the memory cache, so try searching a new page. Hope this helps.

  • KIN ONEm Help!?!

At the moment I am looking for support answers to my questions before i go ahead and use my free upgrade to get the KIN ONEm.
    1. Does the phone support a navigation program like vz navigator? or any other navigation program?
    2. Does it have a calendar?
    3. How do i get access to Zune on the phone?
    4. What apps are currently available to the KIN ONEm?
Basically i'm curious to know what the phone provides and what we can do with the phone as opposed to what is minimally shown to use on the Verizon website of its included features and programs.

Right now there are no additional apps available for the Kin, and it doesn't support Navigator. I don't know whether there will be any future support or software updates. As another poster said, maybe this will sell well as a feature phone and things will change, but Microsoft is focusing on Windows 7 phones right now.
I also wanted to add something about Zune. While you can download the software and manage your own music and photos with it, if you want access to the unlimited music in Zune Marketplace, you will have to subscribe for $15/month. With this, you can keep 10 songs a month. If your subscription lapses, the songs you download disappear (except for the 10 songs a month you can keep). $15/month might be reasonable for someone who's not paying for data.

  • I fixed my Kin Onem, even though it had the dreaded 'updating modem' error.

My Kin Onem was recently showing an 'updating modem' error that Verizon and Sharp (the phone's manufacturer) didn't seem to know much about, beyond the usual replacement options that were not very helpful. Not knowing what else to do, I bought and activated a different phone.  After activating my new phone, I decided to take another look at my Kin and, for some reason, I was able to fix it today, and the fix was actually pretty straightforward.
After plugging my Kin into my PC, I went to 'Devices and Printers' (in the Start menu) and clicked on my phone's icon, which was now just a white hard drive icon since it was unrecognizable. When I clicked on it, Windows noted that there was an error, and asked if I wanted to run Troubleshoot. When Troubleshoot ran its course, it asked whether I wanted to search for a replacement device driver (since that is apparently where the error originated). After it searched for a new driver, my computer automatically installed one on my Kin and the 'updating modem' error message disappeared! My Kin then restarted itself, and it was good as new . I was able to sync it with Zune and put everything I had assumed was irretrievably lost onto my computer.
I don't know whether the error will happen spontaneously again, but I am happy to have fixed it for now.
