[kinda solved!]nvidia-settings segmentation fault

hi
i use nvidia-settings to adjust my graphic card setup. I haven't used it in a while though (in fact, i think it was using kde about 8 months ago), and tried to fire it up today on openbox, this is what i get;
$ nvidia-settings

I have never installed murrine ever! is it as simple an issue to fix as install murrine??
i tried to pacman it & yaourt it, but its not found! before I go about finding the source code to compile, i was wondering if anyone else has any ideas?

hi, thanks for that. I installed the theme engine, now the error message only says;
$ nvidia-settings
Segmentation Fault
$
I keep my system fully updated all the time, but how do i find out what version of nvidia-utils i am using??

    I have nvidia 270.41.06-1 installed. And when I try to run nvidia-settings it gives me segmentation fault.
    Anyone else experience this problem? I think it started happening to me only on very recent update.

    I am on x86_64 also, XFCE4, and it segfaults on me too, here is the log (found in the kernel.log):
    It segfaults only when trying to SAVE TO X CONFIGURATION FILE (xorg.conf) (and does not update xorg.conf)

    UPDATE: when I delete the ~/.nvidia-settings.rc  file (in all my user's directories, including the root directory)
    I can then SAVE the CONFIGURATION (as root).  I just made sure aftewards, to save the new ~/.nvidia-settings.rc
    too. (to all my user's directories).
    I didn't have to change themes, or anything else.  Just delete the old ~/.nvidia-settings.rc file from each user,
    including root, then issue # sudo nvidia-setttings and save the X configurations to file.  It worked.. then
    saved the settings to each user's directory (~/.nvidia-settings-rc)

  • [Solved]xfce 4.12: Display Settings - Segmentation fault (core dumped)

    Just upgraded to Xfce 4.12  from 4.10 last week I have just one big issue so far: the display settings panel doesn't work. When I click on it, nothing happens.
    If I run from terminal xfce4-display-settings I get "Segmentation fault (core dumped)" and with "gdb xfce4-display-settings" the output says "Reading symbols from xfce4-display-settings...(no debugging symbols found)...done."
    What I'm thinking of is a missing dep. Since upgraded to 4.12 I also have a problem with Docky which displays a horizontal black line with shadow on my screen. I don't know if it's related, but this is the output when I run Docky from terminal: http://pastebin.com/cT5XNvWU
    Before upgrading to 4.12, for some months, I had issues with xrandr which didn't detect my  laptop screen resolution (full hd) and I had to manually add a profile that fits my normal resolution, otherwise I would had a resolution of 640x480px (this one is shown right now in my nVidia settings in "X Screen Information" section). I don't know if it's related, but I'm just saying.
    I'm using bumblebee for my nvidia card & xf86-video-intel for my integrated graphics card. Yeah, I have hybrid graphics (Asus laptop).
    General info:
    - arch x86_64
    - kernel 3.18.6-1
    - slim display manager (just saw the warning on archwiki that this one has been abandoned)
    - bumblebee & intel driver
    - xfce 4.12
    Anyone facing the same issue?

    While not logged in, try renaming ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/display.xml. A new one will be re-created on next login. There may be something in that file creating the crash.

    Settings Manager >> Window Manager Tweaks >> Compositor tab, and uncheck "Show shadows under dock windows".

  • [SOLVED] nvidia-settings startup delay

    Does anyone happen to know why nvidia-settings takes a good 3-4 minutes to open after open it from the menu or the terminal, sudo or as user? I'm on xfce and didn't have this problem on Cinnamon or Ubuntu Gnome-Shell.
    I have to use this settings panel to turn "on" my secondary display when I plug it up also for some reason, this is new too, but I suppose not relevant to the original question. Bonus points if you know why this is too!

    Actually, chalk this up to not looking hard enough again. The suggestion to add
    127.0.0.1 myhostname
    to /etc/hosts seems to have solved the issue.

  • (SOLVED) xfce4-appfinder Segmentation fault

    Hi all,
    I just discovered yesterday that xfce4-appfinder ins't working on my desktop (it works fine on my laptop though). Running it from xfce it just does nothing but if I run it from the terminal I just get this message: Segmentation fault.
    I'm pretty sure it worked like two months ago. I installed some apps and did some upgrades from that time on. Already tried to downgrade xfce4-appfinder to the previous version but I still got the same error.
    Does anyone have/had this problem?

  • [SOLVED] nvidia-settings taking a long time to load.

    I just got an nvidia card yesterday, so I'm not sure if this is regular behavior, but nvidia-settings take about 3-5 minutes to load.   I'm using KDE.   When I try to load it from the terminal I see a bunch of errors like this:

    I searched around for this issue, and found people who had similar problems with Firefox in the past, but I never see anyone who has solved it.  On my setup I don't have this issue with any other app besides nvidia-settings.

    The Steam client crashes with a segmentation fault when attempting to run "STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam".
    This wouldn't be so much of an issue if disabling the runtime wasn't required by SimpleScreenRecorder to inject it's libraries into steam games.

    After a few hours of looking for answers, it seems that Steam requires an older version of lib32-glibc than what is currently installed,
    although continues to functions so long as runtime is enabled by default. Running steam with default settings through gdb showed no
    errors regarding either "libtier0_s.so" or "libc.so.6".
    Is there a way to obtain an older package of lib32-glibc from the repo to test if this is the culprit?
    Building and compiling glibc from source is just a little bit outside my realm of understanding.

    So the Steam client is looking for ld.so.preload where it doesn't exist, and accessing the 64bit glibc library.
    I think that when Steam runs with runtime disabled, it is supposed to use the 32bit libraries, but it doesn't search
    in /usr/lib32 when the runtime is disabled. I rolled back lib32-glibc to 2.20-2 (Dec 1st, 04) and there was no change.
    Any ideas?

    The fullrecall package is unmaintained, poorly written, and out of date (the latest version on the fullrecall website is 1.5.2).  It's really hard to say why it is segfaulting but I would bet that it is because fullrecall is distributed as a binary rather than as source files.  This means that it links against very specific versions of its dependencies, none of which are listed in the PKGBUILD.  It's very possible that the versions in the arch repos of the various lib32-* dependencies that you installed are newer versions than the binary program requires.
    You could try running namcap[1] on the built package and look for the specific version of the dependency you need in the Arch Rollback Machine[2], but I'm not sure how much that will help you.  If you do manage to get it working, please adopt and update the package in the AUR.

    I've already reset all cinnamon settings and removed my used cinnamon theme numix and numix gtk theme. Also I created an softlink for default in ~/.themes, ~/.icons to Adwaita, because I've read that this is the gtk3 default Theme.
    Has someone experienced the same problem?

    I am running Arch with KDE.
    Should it find all those files it is not finding? Could they be part of the problem?

    Well, I found a workaround, for those who really need acroread and want it well integrated into the KDE environment.
    The solution is to use another KDE look-alike theme, QtCurve, instead of the "problematic" oxygen-gtk for GTK2 applications.
    What you have to do is install the following packages from the AUR:
    gtk-engines
    qtcurve-gtk2
    qtcurve-kde
    lib32-qtcurve-gtk2
    and also lib32-gtk-engines if it isn't resolved as a dependency.
    You will also need to install the kde-gtk-config package from the AUR.
    Then go to: KDE System Settings > Application Appearance > GTK, select QtCurve as the GTK2 theme and enjoy acroread and other GTK2 applications (well not fully, but the QtCurve theme is OK) integrated into your KDE desktop!
    PS1: QtCurve is not (yet?) available for GTK3, so I left oxygen-gtk there.

    When I update my packages via:
    $ yaourt -Syu
    I saw the error:
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
    Then I found out the problem is about the binary file gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders.
    When I run
    gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders > /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders
    I get the error
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
    Is this a bug or did I do something wrong?
    The file /usr/bin/gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders is owned by package gdk-pixbuf2 (2.31.3-1), I tried compiling the package from source myself, that didn't solve the issue.
    I am using kde (new plasma).

    I'm not sure what is supposed to happen after xorg crashes and whether it's being restarted but everything related to xorg is unresponsive. The system otherwise is running fine but I haven't been able to find a solution to recover from this other than cold restart. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard for instance and it's being registered(probably udev is responsible for this) but it's still "dead".
    Is it nvidia's fault or something else may be going on? I know you can't really do much dealing with the binary blob. I haven't given nouveau a chance for a long time but I may try this in the future if it helps with something tracking this. I'm using nvidia 325.15-10 package from the official repos for now and the card is gtx 570 fermi. xorg is the latest one in the repos.
    I'm not sure what driver version this package is based on(325.15 I guess). On the nvidia site the newest ones are 331.13 beta and 319.60. I can try them but I'm not even sure whether there are some patches needed to make them work with the newest kernels. At least I hope someone could provide more info on this because it seems interesting.

    Is this continuing to happen for you? I am experiencing the same issue with version 325. I downgraded from 331 because there were some major bugs in that version. Have you found any solution?

    I tried installing Infinality-bundle+fonts and it fixed the problem.
    So there was a problem with my fonts, I don't know why this happened but I'm happy to have solved.

    the problem was the sound configuration. solved it by following this guide: http://wiki.flightgear.org/index.php/Li … F.asoundrc for alsa audio setup. before openal was assuming pulseaudio for some reason..
