KM2M Combo-L - Hardware Fault DDR Upgrade

Am having problems upgrading RAM on the KM2m Combo-L (MS-6738)
All working perfectly with 1 x 512Mb DDR RAM in DDR Slot 1 (Bank 0 & 1) - soon as I upgrade with second 512Mb/256Mb stick in Slot 2 (Bank 2 & 3), system becomes unstable and crashes unexpectedly in WinXP. All RAM checked in other machines/Slot 1 - OK - Memtest reports no probs. All BIOS Settings normal - all 4 DDR banks are seen OK. Have 3 of these boards - all the same problem. Is this a known hardware fault on second DDR slot?
Specs:
KM2m Combo-L - latest BIOS v1.4
Athlon XP2000+
2 x 512Mb Kingston DDR RAM
1 x Pioneer DVR-R A03 DVD Recorder
1 x Pioneer DVD x16 DVD-ROM
2 x Seagate 120Gb ATA-133 7,200RPM 8MB IDE Drives
Premier PSU 350W MAX:
 3.3V    24A
    5V    30A
  12V    16A
3.3V + 5V = 200W MAX
WinXP SP1 + Updates
Thanks in advance for any help!

Yeah, matching PC266 CL2.5 Kingston - all OK in Slot 1, only prob when I try to use Slot 2

  • MS-6738 (KM2M Combo-L) RAM Upgrade Question

    Hi
I have the MS-6738 (KM2M Combo-L) Motherboard.  At the moment it is running 512mb of RAM and I would like to upgrade to 1gig.
I do not know the make of the RAM in place at the moment because it was there when I bought the PC, but Aida tells me this:
    FSB - Real Clock 133mhz
          - Effective Clock 267mhz
Same goes for the RAM, 133 and 267.
I have read into the gambles involved in mixing RAM makes, etc, but I am prepared to take this gamble (first and maybe only time!) but according to http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=MSI+%28Micro+Star%29%2B+Motherboards&mfr=MSI+%28Micro+Star%29&cat=&model=MS-6738+%28KM2M+Combo-L%29&submit=Go the board is compatible with DDR PC2100 and DDR PC2700, yet it reccomends (actually GUARANTEES) that the Ballistix DDR PC400 will work.  Is this correct?
What do you consider the best option to be for an upgrade.  I can either get another 512 of the same speed (DDR PC2100??), or if it will effectively run DDR PC3200/400 then I will go for 1gig of that instead (Athalon XP 2000+).  Please let me know what you think.
Thanks in advance for any useful posts!

Thanks for your replies so far.
I have read that this board suffers from problems when running more than one stick of RAM, as such I am tempted to just take out the old 512 stick and replace it with a single 1gig stick.
The bigger question I have is whether going for a higher speed of RAM (like available and guaranteed to work on Crucial), say DDR PC3200 would have any significant effect on system performance (World of Warcraft is a major RAM hog).
The RAM prices are as follows:
    1GB — CT12864Z335 DDR PC2700 CL=2.5 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED £117.99 ex. VAT (ea.)  £138.64 inc. VAT* (ea.)
    1GB — CT12864Z265 DDR PC2100 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED £125.99 ex. VAT (ea.)  £148.04 inc. VAT* (ea.)
    1GB — CT12864Z40B DDR PC3200 CL=3 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED £133.99 ex. VAT (ea.)  £157.44 inc. VAT* (ea.)
As you can see the PC2700 is cheapest, but the original mobo spec states DDR PC2100 as the highest (although the official site just says 184 pin no max speed was quoted).
Therein lies my question, would there be any point in spending the extra £20 on PC3200 when the system FSB is only 133mhz?

  • KM2M Combo-L SKT A - Shutting Down!!!!

    Hi guys
I built this system a few weeks ago for a mate, first time with MSI. All came together and fired up no problem. However it keeps shutting down. Like…OFF, no warning, no blue screen, no “Windows has recovered….” and nothing written to the error log. Like pressing the reset switch. Then it boots back up and carries on. Does this randomly, can be 3 times in an hour or once a day.
All the drivers and updates are right up to date, it runs at 45 – 48 degrees.

    OK changed the RAM.
    Still the same ;(
Checked the HDD with a tool downloaded from Maxtor, it passed everything.
I have downgraded the hardware acceleration for the graphics (2 notches) and it seems better.
I switched off the reboot to see if an error message would appear and one eventually did (when it didn't just freeze) it said something like the error was caused by win32.sys and a paged error in a non paged area?
I tried updating the video driver but  have the latest (came with board) does it seem the most likely culprit?

  • Error blue screen with KM2M Combo Board

The setup of my PC is:
    KM2M Combo L
    Athlon 2200+
    1x128 Mb DDR PC 2100
S3 graphics pro savage DDR (on board, currently 16M)
    AC97 audio controller (on board)
    HDD Samsung 6 G
    CD 52x
    Floppy drive
    Mouse, keyboard PS/2
    Windows XP Home version 2002
    The problem is this:
Once the operative system is installed, the pc works correctly. When the drivers on the board drivers cd are installed, the system crash often, especially playing a movie or running a game, and a error blue screen are shown.
Please somebody tell me how can I solve this fastidious problem, or at less, what the failure could be.
    Thanks a lot!

What brand of memory ? Perhaps 128 Mb. of memory is too poor, since your problems happens when playing videos or games. Borrow a 256 Mb. module and see wha happens.-  8)

Depending on what company made the PS, most companies over exagerate what they will do, or give a peak power output instead of a constant rated amprage. If thier PS will maintain a constant 200watt under full load, then it will get the job done in a all-in-1 unit. Check this page for power consumption of all your parts. It`s kinda old and the values for the VC and processors could be a bit higher, but it will give you a good idea.

  • MSI KM2M combo won't power on

Last week I bought a KM2M-combo board, an AMD XP 2200 cpu + cooler and 256mb ddr pc400 MDT memory. When I installed it and pressed the power button it didn't boot, I only heard a soft "siren sound" coming from a speaker on the board itself (no display on monitor, no fans spinning). I used both power connectors (the big one, and the small, square shaped one) and used the onboard video output.
I've tried switching the ddr memory to another socket and used SD-ram. I switched PSU's, with these stats:
    300W
    +12V/15a
    +6V/30a
    +3.3V/20a
No succes, so I dismounted the board and pulled off all cables, to set it at a minimum (motherboard, cpu+fan, memory and the PSU with above stats). I reseated the CPU and tried using an AGP video card, in stead of the onboard video; same problem.
I've come to a dead end here. Any suggestions?

The ram says: MDT DDR, 256mb PC400 CL2.5 (single-sided). It'll probably be PC3200 memory. But would this matter? Even if it's faster memory than the PC2100 the motherboard supports, wouldn't it just work below it's max speed (in this case at PC2100)?
I also used an old piece of APASS PC100 64mb SD-RAM memory (removed the DDR first of course), I experienced the same problem: it didn't power on.
So I used a piece of memory which is too fast, and one which is slow :P

  • New KM2M Combo screen black

    HELP!!!
KM2M Combo, AMD Athlon XP 2000+  Brand new system which was working fine for several hours.  Plugged in Ethernet to LAN jack and screen went black, then came back to scrambled, then black.  Plugged in another monitor and screen stayed black.  Both monitor checked ok.  Had run Dx Dialogue prior to problem and all checked ok, no problems.  Sorry, but I do not have the voltage information, but can someone please help me . . . .

Try reseating everything, all cards, ram, power cables, IDE cables ect.
Clear CMOS by removing the power cable from the PSU, pushing the power button to discharge the capacitors on the board and in the PSU, and moving the jumper for a few seconds, then moving it back.
Also, insure there are no unused metal standoffs behind the board. Check the heatsink for proper seating.
Any one of these items can be slightly loose, and cause this type of problem, since it is, as you said "brand spankin new".
I take it you are not getting any display at all, not even the BIOS info on bootup. The video is powered from the 4 pin ATX lead, so insure it is seated good as well.
You listed "356MB DDR 2100 PC133" for the RAM, which is simply impossible. Is it PC2100 or PC133, and 256MB?
Have you another PSU that you could try, as the specs you listed for the current PSU should suffice, as long as the PSU is actually delivering those numbers.

    Hi..
About the fact that 8x AGP cards in 4x agp slots... Not a problem.. U c, 8x agp is backwords compatible to 4x agp but 8x is not compatible with 2x agp.. So no prob for u there
About the part where u wanna just plug it in and working.. I am not sure about it.. The G4Ti cards eat up so much power that u might (possibly) have to replace the power supply.. U should have a look at these two articles written by Bas before going ahed with the vga card.. As far as compatibillity goes.. No prob

  • PCMCIA Hardware Fault - Tecra 750CDT

    Hi...
I have two identical Toshiba Tecra 750CDT laptops.
One machine will not recognise when PCMCIA cards are inserted, no
reaction to it whatsoever, no status lights on cards.
On the other machine cards are recognised immediately and work
    perfectly.
When I swap the hard drive and WiFi card from the 'good' machine to the
'bad' machine, the bad machine boots normally with seemingly everything
working normally, except for no reaction to the WiFi card, not even a
    staus light on the card.
Swap back to the good machine and all works perfectly again.
Ive taken this to mean that there is a hardware fault in the PCMCIA
    circuitry of the bad machine.
Can anybody tell me whether there are any protection devices, fuses or
whatever, on laptop PCMCIA circuitry ?
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

    Hi
This unit is about 9 years old and it is not known to me but I recommend you to check all BIOS settings. Maybe you will find something there.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 2.26 upgrade. Seg faults during upgrade.

    Hello.
    I have an huge problem...
Yesterday I've tried to update my ArchLinux and I've got seg faults from gconf during the upgrade and my gnome won't start.
Nautilus, gnome-settings-daemon, etc... All of them with seg faults.
    Anyone with the same problem?
Last edited by sLUGo (2009-04-06 00:21:14)

I tried rebuilding the schemas according to the instructions found inthe bug
    report:
    http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/14107
but I still get segmentation fault. These occur at the points indicated below in
the snip from the command output:
    --------output-from-command-----------------------
Installerade schemat "/schemas/desktop/gnome/typing_break/enabled" för lokalen "C"
    Segmenteringsfel
Installerade schemat "/schemas/apps/yelp/fixed_font" för lokalen "C"
    Segmenteringsfel
Needless to say this means that trying to reinstall gnomelibs and yelp (which
were the ones that seg-faulted during upgrade) still causes segmentation fault.
