KM2M Combo -L MS 6738 MB with VIA NIC

When I try to install Norton Internet Security or any other Firewall the TCPIP install on my WIN 98 SE goes away.  The NIC is not enabled after the install.  I try to reinstall the NIC and it does not work (will not install.) Teh adapter is a VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter and the live update says i have all of the correct drivers.
Has anybody else ran into this problem?
I with a shareware fire wall and had the same problem so I went with the Norton Personal FW and now I find I have the same problem so I thend to thisnk it is a problem with the board and the NIC.
The MB is a KM2M Combo-L  http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=411

Ok, thank you   ...  I have seen that information.
The strange thing is that there it figures that the motherboard supports Duron Morgan from 1.1 Ghz (anything says about the Duron Spitfire) and, however, today I have placed a Duron Spitfire 750 Mhz and this if it is recognized as such!
I believe that this reveals that a deficiency exists in the regressive compatibility of CPU's of this mobo!...

  • KM2M Combo L MS-6738 Problem with Duron 850 Morgan

    Hello!
    I have just re-lived an old KM2M I Warp L (6738) with a processor Duron 850 Morgan.
However, when boot the system, the screen shows Mobile AMD Duron 500.
The motherboard has the last BIOS in the web site of MSI (W6738VMS.140) but I don't find an option to change the multiplier or to leave it in AUTO (the jumper of FSB is in 100Mhz).
I cannot believe that this motherboard doesn't recognize a Duron Morgan 850 correctly !
    Does some solution exist? ...
Greetings and thank you ahead of time!

I recently tried installing MSI's KM2M Combo-L (MS-6738) motherboard in a HP Pavilion 7909 PC but NOTHING happens!
The green light on the PSU is on, but when i press the ON button nothing happens. I suspect the PSU might not be supplying enough power (label on the unit says Output -124W) or could the motherboard be fried.

  • Lower the RAM's Memory Timing to something Less Aggressive...? MSI KM2M Combo-L

(Not sure where would be the best place to post, so this question is posted here and in the BIOS Thread...  If possible, could the Moderators please leave BOTH as to assure a response...  I'd appreciate it...  Thank You..!!!)
    MSI KM2M Combo-L (601-6738-010)
I’m running into some application errors, and the main suggestion is to lower the RAM’s Memory Timing to something Less Aggressive...
The problem with that is I don’t see any option in the MSI KM2M Combo-L Phoenix 6g BIOS...
Basically, I’m trying to “Underclock”...   NOT “Overclock”...
    Any ideas...??
(I tried “searching” the forums, but I’m not finding anything, other than people asking “Why would you want to do that...??”   Those types of responses aren’t very useful...)

    Hi
The KM2M Combo L bios under Dram Clock/Drive Control allows some adjustment of the memory timings.  I suggest that you run it with the Dram Clock set by Spd (default).  If you still have errors, run memtest for a couple of hours to check your memory.

  • KM2M Combo-L - Hardware Fault DDR Upgrade

Am having problems upgrading RAM on the KM2m Combo-L (MS-6738)
All working perfectly with 1 x 512Mb DDR RAM in DDR Slot 1 (Bank 0 & 1) - soon as I upgrade with second 512Mb/256Mb stick in Slot 2 (Bank 2 & 3), system becomes unstable and crashes unexpectedly in WinXP. All RAM checked in other machines/Slot 1 - OK - Memtest reports no probs. All BIOS Settings normal - all 4 DDR banks are seen OK. Have 3 of these boards - all the same problem. Is this a known hardware fault on second DDR slot?
    Specs:

      12V    16A

  • 8X AGP Card (FX5700) on KM2M Combo Motherboard (VIA KM266 Chipset)?

I have got a MSI KM2M Combo with a VIA KM266 Chipset based motherboard [Model No: MS-6738 (v1.X) Micro ATX Mainboard].
What is the voltage of the AGP 2.0 slot in the above mentioned motherboard?
Can I run an 8X Agp card (Nvidea GeForce FX5700) without any problem?

    Frontech 300 Watts SMPS (3.3V 14A; 5V 30A; 12V 12A)
Needs to have at least 25A @ 3.3V, and over 18A @ 12V to be on the safe side.
Otherwise, there should be no problems running that VGA card.

  • MS-6738 (KM2M Combo-L) RAM Upgrade Question

    Hi
I have the MS-6738 (KM2M Combo-L) Motherboard.  At the moment it is running 512mb of RAM and I would like to upgrade to 1gig.
I do not know the make of the RAM in place at the moment because it was there when I bought the PC, but Aida tells me this:
    FSB - Real Clock 133mhz
          - Effective Clock 267mhz
Same goes for the RAM, 133 and 267.
I have read into the gambles involved in mixing RAM makes, etc, but I am prepared to take this gamble (first and maybe only time!) but according to http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=MSI+%28Micro+Star%29%2B+Motherboards&mfr=MSI+%28Micro+Star%29&cat=&model=MS-6738+%28KM2M+Combo-L%29&submit=Go the board is compatible with DDR PC2100 and DDR PC2700, yet it reccomends (actually GUARANTEES) that the Ballistix DDR PC400 will work.  Is this correct?
What do you consider the best option to be for an upgrade.  I can either get another 512 of the same speed (DDR PC2100??), or if it will effectively run DDR PC3200/400 then I will go for 1gig of that instead (Athalon XP 2000+).  Please let me know what you think.
Thanks in advance for any useful posts!

Thanks for your replies so far.
I have read that this board suffers from problems when running more than one stick of RAM, as such I am tempted to just take out the old 512 stick and replace it with a single 1gig stick.
The bigger question I have is whether going for a higher speed of RAM (like available and guaranteed to work on Crucial), say DDR PC3200 would have any significant effect on system performance (World of Warcraft is a major RAM hog).
The RAM prices are as follows:
    1GB — CT12864Z335 DDR PC2700 CL=2.5 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED £117.99 ex. VAT (ea.)  £138.64 inc. VAT* (ea.)
    1GB — CT12864Z265 DDR PC2100 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED £125.99 ex. VAT (ea.)  £148.04 inc. VAT* (ea.)
    1GB — CT12864Z40B DDR PC3200 CL=3 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED £133.99 ex. VAT (ea.)  £157.44 inc. VAT* (ea.)
As you can see the PC2700 is cheapest, but the original mobo spec states DDR PC2100 as the highest (although the official site just says 184 pin no max speed was quoted).
Therein lies my question, would there be any point in spending the extra £20 on PC3200 when the system FSB is only 133mhz?

  • Error blue screen with KM2M Combo Board

The setup of my PC is:
    KM2M Combo L
    Athlon 2200+
    1x128 Mb DDR PC 2100
S3 graphics pro savage DDR (on board, currently 16M)
    AC97 audio controller (on board)
    HDD Samsung 6 G
    CD 52x
    Floppy drive
    Mouse, keyboard PS/2
    Windows XP Home version 2002
    The problem is this:
Once the operative system is installed, the pc works correctly. When the drivers on the board drivers cd are installed, the system crash often, especially playing a movie or running a game, and a error blue screen are shown.
Please somebody tell me how can I solve this fastidious problem, or at less, what the failure could be.
    Thanks a lot!

What brand of memory ? Perhaps 128 Mb. of memory is too poor, since your problems happens when playing videos or games. Borrow a 256 Mb. module and see wha happens.-  8)

  • Km2m shuts down during boot after running via chipset driver install

Ive recently purchased a new computer with a km2m Combo mobo and am having trouble getting it properly configured and running.
I attempted to run the "One Touch Setup" on the drivers and utilities CD that was supplied with the system. Reeceived a message to first install the VIA Chipset drivers. I ran the chipset driver install and simply clicked NEXT on all the screens accepting the default options. The install appears to complete successfully and restarts the pc.
during restart the pc abruptly powers off!
I can reboot the system in safe mode.
I've run msconfig and disbabled everything and the system still powers of during a normal boot.
If I restore the registy (scanreg /restore) the system again boots properly.
What causes this anomaly and how do I resolve it? Is there some sort of hardware incompatibility? I'm stumped!!!
    AMD XP 2400+ 266FSB
    OS = Windows Me
    PSU = +3.3/28a +5/40a +12/18a -12/1.0a -5/1.0a +5SB/3.0a
    what other info is needed?

Yes, problem with the video card sounds plausible! Any not so successful updates recently? It is sometimes to make a good uninstall, which is required to make a good install.
4in1 drivers should - esp. with W98 and ME - be installed while in SafeMode and with all autostarting programs disabled, for example Antivirus and utilities.
Else, since you have a damaged regedit, I would reinstall Windows. You might have done something for example an upgrade or new install the registry, not healthy, has made a note of. Some utilities also overwrite and change system files without good results.

Depending on what company made the PS, most companies over exagerate what they will do, or give a peak power output instead of a constant rated amprage. If thier PS will maintain a constant 200watt under full load, then it will get the job done in a all-in-1 unit. Check this page for power consumption of all your parts. It`s kinda old and the values for the VC and processors could be a bit higher, but it will give you a good idea.

About the fact that 8x AGP cards in 4x agp slots... Not a problem.. U c, 8x agp is backwords compatible to 4x agp but 8x is not compatible with 2x agp.. So no prob for u there
About the part where u wanna just plug it in and working.. I am not sure about it.. The G4Ti cards eat up so much power that u might (possibly) have to replace the power supply.. U should have a look at these two articles written by Bas before going ahed with the vga card.. As far as compatibillity goes.. No prob

  • Km2m Combo-L - powers up - but nothing on screen

My father has just bought a new MoBo. The system powers up - and you hear the ram counting up - but there is nothing on the screen and the keyboard is also not working (apart from the small flash in the lights when the computer is turned on).
We have remembered to connect the 12V 4-Pin too - and also checked with both connecting the monitor to the onboard-VGA and to a GeForce 4-card.
I list the components we've used - I susspect after reading some of the other postings here that the weakness might be the powersupply (eventhough its brandnew and 400W) - but since I cant seem to find any precise specs on this I prefer to ask before running to the stores buying and buying a new powersupply.
But please keep an open mind and come with any suggestions you think might help.

See troubleshooter by Bas up above. That is, the troubleshooter is up above.
Another possible reason is IDE settings. The HDD should be on IDE slot 1 at the end of the cable. First time I suggest no other IDE devices.
Codegen, the PSU, was in another thread compared to the infamous Qtech, which must stand for questionable technology.

  • KM2M Combo-L SKT A - Shutting Down!!!!

    Hi guys
I built this system a few weeks ago for a mate, first time with MSI. All came together and fired up no problem. However it keeps shutting down. Like…OFF, no warning, no blue screen, no “Windows has recovered….” and nothing written to the error log. Like pressing the reset switch. Then it boots back up and carries on. Does this randomly, can be 3 times in an hour or once a day.
All the drivers and updates are right up to date, it runs at 45 – 48 degrees.

    OK changed the RAM.
    Still the same ;(
Checked the HDD with a tool downloaded from Maxtor, it passed everything.
I have downgraded the hardware acceleration for the graphics (2 notches) and it seems better.
I switched off the reboot to see if an error message would appear and one eventually did (when it didn't just freeze) it said something like the error was caused by win32.sys and a paged error in a non paged area?
I tried updating the video driver but  have the latest (came with board) does it seem the most likely culprit?
