Km2m problem - dead (no fans, no led, nada)

Hi there!
After reading problem 12 pages descriptions of KM2M problems without
finding a solution, I have to ask here... (I'm not a newbie, assembled
many PC's before without any problems)
Mainboard: KM2M Ver 1.0
CPU: Duron 1800 MHz 133 FSB (Applebred?)
CPU-FAN: Spire SPA04B4 WhisperRock IV
RAM: 1 NoName PC133 SDRAM, 1 Apacer PC133 CL3 SDRAM, both 256 MB
DVD-ROM: Pioneer DVD-113
CD-RW: LG 8526B
Harddisk: IBM 85 GB
Floppy: NEC
The PSU: LC-Power 350 W
+3.3 V --> 26A
+5 V --> 30A
+12 V --> 15 A
(Values MAX DC OUTPUT)
Combined PEAK OUTPUT 3,3 and 5 V --> 210W
No other PCI or AGP cards attached.
The system will not boot, the fans are not working, completely dead. (In fact, this is a completely new mainboard, bought yesterday)
- The CPU is correctly inserted, a little heat sink paste just on the
DIE, fan is correctly mounted
- FSB jumper is @ 133 MHz
- both power plugs are mounted correctly
- no additional metalclips in the case (also tried the antistatic
bag method without luck)
- resetting CMOS and battery-removing didn't help
- power switch connector is plugged in, changing polarity didn't help
(I tried basically everything that's described in the sticky troubleshooting guide)
IMPORTANT: Noticed something, when pulling out the 20-pin ATX connector,
the CPU fan begun to work. Pushing in the connector again a little bit
the fan worked again, but when the plug is completely inserted, te fan
stops working! Maybe this helps...
I don't want to return the mainboard if it's my fault.... :-)
What else can I try?
Regards,
Bálint

Is the connection between the motherboard and the case alright?
Hi!
The connection is alright, no additional metal pins (checked it again and again).
OK, I tried every possibility now, and I would like to thank you very very much for everything. But IMHO the board must be dead itself... I'll call MSI Germany tomorrow, hopefully they can help me with a new board...

  • Problem with processor fan.

Hi, since a few days ago the processor fan is not starting when I turn on the laptop, it just starts when I open any windows user session, it used to work fine, suddenly changed and I don't know how to fix it, also when Is not in "High performance" mode the fan just doesn't start till I go to energy options REactive the "Max performance" option in cooling  mode... I'm sorry for my poor explanation, my english is not very good, but I hope is enough to get a little help.
    Thanks.

The fans on laptop computers are thermostatically controlled so they don't turn on when the computer is first turned on. "Thermostatically controlled" is a fancy way of saying that the fans are turned on and off by the heat of the computer. Once the computer gets hot enough the fans turn on. This is a power saving feature to help save on battery power. When the computer's power setting is set for Performance, power is no longer a problem and the fan will come on more quickly and frequently. I have seen where the Bios has been changed to change the fan's heat settings, so you may want to make sure that you have the latest Bios. If the computer is not getting too hot or shutting down because of heat problems, I would not worry about the fan not turning on at startup.

  • Is it a problem if the fans are in "airplane mode" for a long time?

OK, have another quick question about my G5 Quad:
Occasionally (like 2 or 3 times a year), my Quad fans will go into "airplane mode" - I don't know if it's from a failed boot or what (though a hard restart clears the problem), but my question is regarding if it is a problem if it stays in "airplane mode" for a long time.  I can't find anyting on the www about this (though LOTS of complaints on the "airplane" problem).  I wouldn't "think" that it would be a problem as the fans spinning up are supposed to protect the computer, but I wonder if my assumption is correct.
The reason I ask is because the Quad sits in the basement, and I can't hear it unless I walk down there (which is one reason it's in the basement - heat being the other...).  If the computer freezes or fails to reboot, I may not notice it right away (which has happened recently).  It could sit with the fans running at max for several hours until I notice it.  I hope this isn't a problem.
    Thanks again
    Richard

    Biggest problem is power consumption.
The default action for the fans is high, which is meant to protect the components in the case of freezes, crashes, boot errors, etc.
    I hope this isn't a problem.
Only if it becomes a common occurrence.
Then, you need to find the root problem.
Watch the LCS on the Quad. Though possibly less problematic than earlier models with LCS, it does use, nonetheless, a LCS.

  • GT60, ReadWriteEverything problem (cannot set fan speed)

    Hi there,
I have  a MSI GT60 Notebook (i7 3630qm, GTX 675MX) and removed the GTX 675MX from it, so only Intel HD graphics is used.. But now I have a Problem, that the fan goes up to a very high Speed a few minutes after starting the Notebook (in BIOS and Windows as well).. I downloaded ReadWriteEverything and tried to Change the value in the EC Window (row C0, column 0D) but it immediatly Switches back to 66 or 67.. The value switches allways between 66 and 67, which is the fan Speed in percent if I understand correctly..
Is there any fix for this or is there another way modifying the value, except rightclick, "edit" and entering the value..?
    Thanks in advance

Didn't find this exact option but there was one called "Primary Display" which I changed from "SG" (Switchable Graphics) to "IGFX" and what should I say, it is super-silent now
Thank you very much for your helpful hint

  • Mid 2009 macbook pro battery is dead and fan is constantly ramped up (not due to heat). Would installing a new battery fix the fan problem?

Battery icon has an "x" over it and I need to have my laptop plugged in to be on. I've ordered a new battery to install, but I was wondering if it's possible that something else might be causing the fan to be on over drive constantly. I've tried resenting the SMC and the PRAM, but nothing has stopped the fans from running at higher than normal speeds.

If you've updated to Mavericks, you'll either need to use the original install DVD containing the AHT, or download the right one from Apple's servers, then replace the hidden /System/Library/CoreServices.diagnostics   folder.
I think that replacing the battery is likely to stop the fan problem anyway.

  • Dead Lombard 400 - Sleep LED Lights

I have a dead Lombard 400 that I am trying to revive for a friend to use as an email machine.
When I connect the power adapter the sleep LED lights and stays on but the machine will not boot. Pressing the reset button causes the LED to go out; when the reset button is released (after 5 secs or 30 secs) the sleep LED blinks once and then goes dark. The machine will still not boot. I've tried this with both with and without a fully charge battery in the bay with the same result.
The same behavior occurs if I try to boot with a fully charged battery and no power adapter - sleep LED llghts, blinks once after a reset but the Lombard will not boot.
Some of the other things I've done:
    - Checked the internal rechargeable battery. It's currently showing 3.6 volts. Since this machine hasn't been used/charged in 2-3 years and it's main battery was dead, I wonder if it has been recharged by the power adapter or the fully charged main battery I installed. I've tried all the above tests with this battery disconnected.
    - Discharged the battery from my good Lombard 333 to 50% and installed it in the Lombard 400. Plugged it into a known good charger and left it on charge overnight. When I reinstalled the battery in the Lombard 333 it was still at 50%.
    - Dis-connected the keyboard and tried all the above booting scenarios - still nothing.
    - Swapped out the processor board with the one in my good Lombard 333. Still will not boot. 400 MHz processor boots perfectly in my 333 machine.
    - Disassembled the machine and inspected the Power/Sound card and Power Supply card. No visible problems on either and the charger connector on the Power/Sound card has no wobble at all and the solder joint looks solid.
Before I start the tedious process of swapping parts between the good and bad Lombards to determine which part failed, does anyone have any other suggestions?
    Thanks

    wjb5,
Sorry, little help from my end. To answer your question...
"Checked the internal rechargeable battery. It's currently showing 3.6 volts. Since this machine hasn't been used/charged in 2-3 years and it's main battery was dead, I wonder if it has been recharged by the power adapter or the fully charged main battery I installed. I've tried all the above tests with this battery disconnected."
...the internal backup battery is charged by the power adapter. I would guess charging a main battery involves different circuitry.
Since you have tried all the basics, and according to Apple, it could be the sound/power card or the power supply card or the microprocessor card or the I/O logic board. You have already eliminated the microprocessor card. Apple says if the battery will not charge, it is either the power supply card or the I/O logic board. If I were going to take a shot at which card to test first, the power supply card seems a good candidate.

  • The ultimate G5 fan problem: CPU Intake Fan speed error

Another saga of fan overdrive blowing. I have a Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0Ghz, about 3 years old. About 1 year ago, had fan blowing after sleep problems (fans blow super hard, cannot wake from sleep). Eventually resolved this with Apple Care by near-total hardware replacement: fan replacement, fan sensor replacement, case replacement, finally logic board replacement. Problem fixed for 1 year.
Recently problem started again. Now, the fans blow full speed all the time, from the moment of boot (before OS loads). At first, resetting NVRAM from Open Firmware fixed the problem, but after a day or two it would start again. Now, nothing works - although if i manually put computer to sleep, the fans do turn off, and computer does wake up, which is nice.
I have tried the following well-known fixes, none of which has worked:
    - Repaired Disk Permissions from boot CD
    - Set Processor Performance to Highest
    - Trashed Energy Saver prefs
    - Removed all peripherals
    - Removed RAM
    - Took out hard drives
    - Reset PRAM
    - Reset NVRAM (from Open Firmware)
    - Reset PMU (motherboard button)
    - Replaced PRAM battery
    - Checked inner (clear plexi) door sensor
    - Cleaned out dust from inside case
    - Check temperatures, all i think within normal range (<40 degrees (c), except GPU which is 65)
    - Reinstalled OS X (archive)
Finally I obtained the legendary Apple Service Diagnostic disc.
    - Ran Apple Service Diagnostic
    - all hardware passed
    - Ran ASD fan calibration
    - "Error CPU0: CPU intake fan speed error. Check that inner door is secure and in place."
The inner door is indeed in place, and as far as I can tell the sensor is working since the indicator red LED on the logic board turns on and off when you remove the door. Is there another way to check that sensor?
What else can I try? I've spent about 40 hours on this so far... The only thing I have not done is take out and reseat the CPU's, but as far as i can tell the only reason to do that is to force older versions of ASD to allow temperature calibration - but ASD v2.5.8 fixes that.

I am having the same problem with a dual 2GHz G5. It runs fine, all temperatures look normal (in the 30-40 degree range), but all the fans are stuck on full.
There's a bit of history here: I used this machine for a while and intermittently it would completely freeze and the fans would increase to full speed (presumably to prevent damage to the components). This was never fixed because it happened only about once a month. Then, all of a sudden, it failed to start up completely. I figured it was a bad logic board. So now I have swapped the logic board, resulting in the computer seeming working fine apart from the full fan speed.
I read that the reason for this is that it needs a thermal recalibration. So I ran the Apple Service Diagnostic disk version 2.5.8 and it does indeed report that the CPUs require calibration. Unfortunately about 10 minutes after starting the calibration it reports "Error CPU0: CPU intake fan speed error. Check that inner door is secure and in place." The inner door is indeed secure and in place and indeed the red LED does come on if the inner door is removed, proving that the sensor is working properly.
e.f. - if you have any luck with the things that you are trying please post back here.

  • Big fan noise problem: the rear fan won't shut off, the BIOS won't update, systemupdate locks up

I received new ThinkStaion (oh boy, lots of memory and CPU speed, yay!)
I unfortunately left the originally installed Vista OS on there.  Very much regretting that as I believe it contributes to the following problems (BIOS).
So the original problem was that after just a month of using my new ThinkStation, the System Board died, and it had to be replaced. Honestly, all I did was choose the sleep or hibernate option in Vista to shut down.  Afterwards, poof! didn't even get the proper Power lights on the system.  I diagnosed this with the online docs and then sat for a few hours on our tech support line doing all the same things to re-diagnose it.
So after the replacement, the rear fan will not shut off. Jet engine noise all day. I went into the system settings and selected "Quiet" for the Fan settings but that did not help.
Research on this forum resulted in the possibility of a BIOS update fixing the problem.  Comparison to my co-workers systems which arrived at the same time shows this BIOS is woefully out of date, so even if it does not fix the fan issue I want to update it.  However, everything I've tried to do is failing for one reason or another.
(The fan issue does need resolution since in one week I will end up sharing an office (first time in many years, thanks IBM for nothing!) so since I don't want us both to have to wear noise cancelling headsets, I'd like to fix this without having to just pull the @#$@ power to the fan. Grrrr. )
I downloaded what I felt were the appropriate Lenovo apps to update both the BIOS and the serial number but none seem to work properly from the command line in Vista.  One of the two (can't recall which) asks me to reboot and it never actually shuts down. Eternal "Shutting Down" message. Ga!  The other throws some gosh awful

Then I decided Vista might be the problem and found sites recommending flashing the BIOS from a bootable USB.  So I started down that path and after burning the wrong version, finally geting the AIK Vista tools installed and to the point of trying to make the USB bootable, it won't allow me to put the OS boot on it.  Ah, for the days when a simple "sys a:" took care of that.
So, after reformatting the USB and pounding my head in the wall, keyboard, etc. I am at my wit's end.  What to do.  I just want the fan noise to go away.
This does seem to duplicate other forum messages but I can't get anywhere on this.  Help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

FYI to all the helpful folks here (and any looking to shut their jet engine off as well): Flashing the BIOS did the trick.
First I had to find a website with DOS OS files and put those on the USB instead of Vista.  Oldie but a goodie, but at least it booted! No other versions would.
I had been intending to use the WinPhlash utility that Lenovo supplied with the BIOS update but since I was booting from DOS that was useless. However, I found a DOS version of it and used that instead. Boom baby!  Flashed and rebooted.
It did take two boots to get it back to normal (first one gave very alarming messages about no operating system being found but I think it was just a remnant of the reboot that was triggered from the DOS session).  A second boot returned life to normal and blissful silence from the server.  And I was finally able to get the model and serial number back in there to get rid of the bootup message it throws for that too.
    Ahhhhhhh.
Thanks to all for the hints - I believe I had gotten the idea of flashing the BIOS to solve this from some other thread I found here.  This is a very nice forum to have bookmarked.

  • Problems with G5 fans coming on...

I have a very early Power Mac Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 running OSX 10.4.11 which has started having strange problems... For apparantly no reason all the fans come on and stay on - this can sometimes be resolved with a restart, sometimes not, in which case I need to shut the machine down - after which it will sometimes not reboot the first time (gets as far a blue screen then hangs) - I then need to unplug it from the mains for 10 mins or so, afer which it will start up normally.
Looking into the problem I have discovered this message in the system log every time it happens:
    Jan 10 22:01:19 teknomage kernel[0]: AppleMaxim6690::readI2C error (0xE00002C2) I2CAddr = 0x98, subAddr = 0x01
    Jan 10 22:01:19 teknomage kernel[0]: AppleMaxim6690::getExternalTemp read temp failed!
I have also started running a temperature & hardware monitor to try and get to the bottom of this and have discovered that all my temperatures show a flatline when the fault is about to occur. If I then restart the machine, all fans will be running. If the machine starts up with all fans running. On one occasion, CPU A showed a flatline temperature of -6.1 degrees  for several hours (with the machine working just fine!) and the machine restarted into all fans running mode after this.
I have tried both replacing the battery and resetting the PMU - which appeared to fix the fault for a few days, it then recurred.
The machine also will not sleep properly - in that it won't always wake from sleep and needs a power off and reboot - which sometimes occurs with all fans running.
Apart from that the machine works fine - all my software works etc even when all fans are running.
Any ideas as to the cause? I've not changed the hardware (except to replace the battrery when the fault first started) or software for over a year. Is it case of a failing logic board or could it be something else? Any ideas on how to resolve this?
Is there any problem in running the machine when the temperature monitor is showing flatline temperatures for all sensors - or is there a lower level system that will protect the machine should temperatures get too high (maybe by switching to all fans running?)

An update to my G5 fans problem - the problem got worse, with trouble booting the machine at all. It would sometimes take up to half a dozen attempts to get a chime and then a boot :-( Sometimes all the fans would come on after a few minutes, sometimes not at all day. Sleep mode stopped working completely. As the problem was getting worse and worse, I gave in a bought another, refurbished machine identical to mine, swapped over my disks, extra memory & SCSI card and everything on tha machine works just fine :-)
I may try to further diagnose the problem with the old machine later on.

  • Problems to create a basic LED program

Hi guys, I'm starting to work with Labview and also Arduino and I'm facing some problems. I created a program to make two LEDs blink in parallel using Arduino. This program worked fine, but now I want to make it a little bit more complex inserting a button to select which one of the LEDs will blink. I created a logic to do this but it's not possible to implement it due to the different kind of connections (digital, boolean, string). I would like to know if someone can help me with this. I'm posting the VI. Note that I left the logic that I created in the VI, so you can see what I thought to do. Thank you!
*Ps: I don't know why I'm not able to post my VI. When I try to post with it attached I receive the following message: "The contents of the attachment doesn't match its file type.". So i'm posting one picture of the circuit. =/

What options are you looking for?  Both blink, neither blink, LED1 only blinks, LED2 only blinks?
As far as not able to post a VI, we've had that issue for awhile.  I just zip up any VIs I need to post and post the zip file.  Snippets also work well.
There are only two ways to tell somebody thanks: Kudos and Marked Solutions

  • Problems with RPM fans [SOLVED]

Hello. I'm a Spanish user. I don't speak very well English, I'm sorry.
My problem: PWMconfig don't detect modules:
    $ pwmconfig
    # pwmconfig revision 5630 (2009-01-29)
This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)
controls, and test each one to see if it controls a fan on
your motherboard. Note that many motherboards do not have pwm
circuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm.
We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls.
The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed
after testing. However, it is ** very important ** that you
