KMS hosts Coexistance

Sorry if I select the wrong forum, this the first time to write on MS forums.
My question is: we have a KMS server host running on windows server 2008 R2, I wonder if we can run another KMS service on windows server 2012 R2 in the same network at the same time?
OR if are there better scenarios to run a new KMS host on windows server 2012 R2, like migration?
Thanks!

Hi midosoliman,
We can use the multiple KMS, but it often “make some problem” first we need to understand how KMS server works and why it will “make some problem”,
Client Discovery of the KMS Service
By default, KMS clients query DNS for KMS service information. The first time a KMS client queries DNS for KMS service information, it randomly chooses a KMS host from the list of SRV RRs that DNS returns.
The address of a DNS server containing the SRV RRs can be listed as a suffixed entry on KMS clients, which allows advertisement of SRV RRs for KMS in one DNS server and KMS clients with other primary DNS servers to find it.
Priority and weight parameters can be added to the DnsDomainPublishList registry value for KMS. Establishing KMS host priority groupings and weighting within each group allows you to specify which KMS host the clients should try first and balances
traffic among multiple KMS hosts. Only Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 provide the priority and weight parameters.
If the KMS host that a client selects does not respond, the KMS client removes that KMS host from its list of SRV RRs and randomly selects another KMS host from the list. When a KMS host responds, the KMS client caches the name of
the KMS host and uses it for subsequent activation and renewal attempts. If the cached KMS host does not respond on a subsequent renewal, the KMS client discovers a new KMS host by querying DNS for KMS SRV RRs.
By default, client computers connect to the KMS host for activation by using anonymous RPCs through TCP port 1688. (You can change the default port.) After establishing a TCP session with the KMS host, the client sends a single request packet. The
KMS host responds with the activation count. If the count meets or exceeds the activation threshold for that operating system, the client is activated and the session is closed. The KMS client uses this same process for renewal requests. The communication
each way is 250 bytes.
With 2008R2 KMS for the Win8.1 and 2012r2 activation we need Install hotfix KB2885698 to extend the KMS functionality of the Windows 2008R2 KMS host.

  • KMS Host server 2012 R2

I recently migrated our KMS server to a 2012 R2 box and I cannot get the count to budge now.According to this article our KMS key should now activate 2008 r2, 7 Ent, 2012 R2.7. Enter your KMS Host Key (CSVLK). Note: You can only install a Windows Server 2012 CSVLK at this point. A Windows Server 2012 CSVLK can activate Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 KMS clients.http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2013/03/14/installing-volume-activation-services-role-in-...Am I mistaken because my count is only at 4 which are Server 2012 R2 servers. None of the others are even making the count go up. A little help here.

For a KMShost with the OS=WS2012R2, you cannot, and, there is no need to, install any other Windows KMShost keys. The WS2012R2 KMShost key, by itself, will activate the KMShost OS, and will also enable the issuing of activations for ALL Windows KMSclients.
Office KMS features are different, and do need to be installed for Office KMSclient activations.
The error you are experiencing is expected, and is a result of your attempt to perform an unnecessary configuration step.

  • Setup Microsoft Office 2013 KMS Host on Windows Server 2008 R2

    Hi all,
hope someone can help, banging my head against a brick wall here.
Followed this excellent article here -

Dont need to install 275817 as its already applied to the server that has the KMS install on it.
When i get to step 3 and double click the exe from the MSDL site i get the cscript window but nothing happens, the window stays blank and then closes, i never get the prompt to enter the licence key for Office 2013 KMS key.
Its a Windows server 2008 R2 install, fully patched and rebooted.
Checked the logs and can find nothing, has anyone seen this or know a fix?
    Thanks in advance.

  • How to activate Windows 8.1 on a Windows 2008 R2 KMS server when I don't have Windows 2012 R2 kms host key

I only have windows 8.1 kms host key but I can't add a client OS kms key to Windows 2008 R2 kms server. And I don't have Windows 2012 R2 license either. Is there any way I can activate Windows 8.1 using my existing kms server? Thanks.

I would like a yes no clarification answer. So does this mean that EVEN WITH THE PATCH. My Server 2012 Standard edition that currently hosts KMS VA for clients running Win7, Win 8, Office15, Server 2008, Server 2012. Will not be able to host windows 8.1?
I will have to install 8.1 and use as a host?
if you have a KMShost product key for WS2012R2, you can patch a down=level Server and be fine.
(the OP didn't renew SA or otherwise has no KMShost pkey for WS2012R2)

I'm having similar issues and have a similar question that doesn't seem to be answered:
My KMS server is Windows 2008 R2 (Also is my domain controller). I want to activate Windows 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1 machines off this KMS server. I can install the 2012 R2 key just fine but receive error 0xC004F015 (The Software Licensing Service reported
that the license is not installed) when I try to install my 8.1 KMS key.
What I'm gathering from this thread is that I have to set up a Windows 8.1 host and set it up to be a KMS server exclusively for activating Windows 8.1. Is this correct? If so, Microsoft needs to fix that. I have a SERVER for activations for a reason: it
is a server, not a client. If I am mis-understanding, how do I get my Windows 2008 R2 server to accept the Windows 8.1 KMS key for activating 8.1 clients?
    Thanks!
You don't need Windows 8.1 KMS key. Your 2012 R2 KMS key will be able to activate your Windows 8.1 machines. So your current set up is fine, no need to set up another Windows 8.1 KMS host.
    My problem is I don't have 2012 R2 KMS key as I didn't buy any Windows 2012 R2 license. So I can't use 2012 R2 KMS key to activate my Windows 8.1.
Oh that's interesting. I guess I need to play around more because my 8.1 test machine isn't activating. I'll start a new thread for that if needed. Sorry for the confusion.

  • Why does my KMS host not activate a client in my network?

    Dear all,
I am an administrator in a company and the office 2013 of one of my clients is not activating.
However, when I looked at the Event Viewer of the client, the client tried to contact the KMS host. However, nothing happened! The product is still not activated!!
Furthermore, I manually inputted the GVLK for Office 2013 Professional Plus so that the Office 2013 of the client automatically discovers and activates against my KMS host.
However, the client's Office 2013 is still not activated!
Could you please tell me what steps should I take so that the Office 2013 is activated via KMS?
    Thanks for reading

  • Windos 2008 KMS host can't activate Windows 8 clients

Hi, I have a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 working as a KMS Host, i can activate Windows 7, Office 2010 and Office 2013 without problems, but, when I try to activate Windows 8 clients an error is showed: 0XC004F042, this same error code us registered in the service

Thanks in advanced for your help

This error almost always means that the KMSclient has successfully contacted a valid KMShost, but, the KMShost does not have the required KMShost productkey installed (e.g. a Windows8 KMSclient contacted a KMShost, but that KMshost doesn't have the needed
    update/patch/productkeys installed).

  • Two Primary KMS Hosts

Is it possible to have two primary KMS hosts on one domain?

    Hi Kevin,
    Yes you can.
    And this is why:
If a KMS host fails, you must install a KMS key on a new host and activate it. You then need to ensure that the new KMS host has an SRV resource record
in the DNS database. If you install the new KMS host with the same computer name and IP address as the failed KMS host, the new KMS host can use the DNS SRV record of the failed host. If the new host has a different computer name, you need to manually remove
the DNS SRV record of the failed host. If your network is using DDNS, the new KMS host automatically creates a new SRV record in the DNS server. The new KMS host then starts collecting client renewal requests and begins activating clients as soon as the KMS
    activation threshold is met.
If your KMS clients are using auto-discovery, they automatically choose another KMS host if their original KMS host does not respond to renewal requests.
If you are not using auto-discovery, you need to update the KMS client computers that were assigned to the failed KMS host.
Multiple KMS hosts can be registered in DNS SRV resource records. If one KMS host is down, the KMS client computer will choose another from the list.
If direct registration is used on the KMS client computer, you can use round-robin DNS or network load-balancing mechanisms (software or hardware) to increase KMS host availability.

  • Moving a KMS Server and Disabling KMS host caching

I am moving my KMS server from a 2003 server to a 2012 R2 server. I have KMS installed on the new server, the host keys installed, and I have forced several clients to check in to the new server to reach the activation limits. Here are my questions.
At one point (thru a vbs script) we forced quite a few clients to check into the old server. Now we want to make sure all clients check into the new server. Since the clients have cached the old KMS host (some forced and some thru auto discovery), will
disabling KMS host caching on the old server and removing the DNS record force all clients to contact the new server? If not, what is the best way to accomplish this?
    Russ

KMSclients which are configured for default auto-discovery, will re-discover via DNS in the event that they cannot contact the cached or discovered KMShost.
You could also consider adjusting the priority of the DNS records for OLDhost vs. NEWhost, such that the NEWhost has a higher priority. You might also consider disabling DNS auto-publishing for the OLDhost, and then delete the DNS RR for OLDhost.
For those clients which were "forced", if the OLDhost is statically configured in those clients, you'll need to reconfigure those clients, either back to auto-discover or statically repoint to NEWhost (whichever you prefer)
KMS host caching is different to statically configuring clients.
KMS host caching is intended to avoid excessive DNS queries, i.e. the client will cache the host name and only issue a query is that cached host is uncontactable.
A static configuration of the hostname, at the client, completely bypasses/disables the DNSlookup/discovery.

  • KMS host for office 2013 standard and pro

Our KMS host is a VM on Windows server 2008 R2
When I install the patch kms host says I need (kb article 2757817), in order for the KMS host to activate Office 2013 clients on Windows 8, will there be a reboot? If so, will this interfere with clients using Office?
    thanks all :)

from memory, yes, a KMShost server machine will need a reboot.
This usually means a brief interruption to all services hosted upon that machine, but after the reboot, services resume.
KMSclient machines (using Windows or Office), will temporarily be unable to contact the KMShost for activations/renewals, but KMSclients automatically retry every few hours anyway, so should be fine. Some machine *might* show not-genuine warnings (depends
on your environment) but will quickly resolve itself.

  • Server 2012 Kms Host and Server 2008 r2 client.

I have deployed a Server 2012 Kms host.
Windows 7, and 8 are activating just fine, and Office 2010 is working.
The issue I'm having is activating Server 2008 and Server 2008 r2.
It seems I have missed a step that would allow me to activate those clients.
Can someone please guide me as to what possibly needs to be done to allow these clients to activate?

    Hi,
The following steps are needed to set up Volume Activation Services in a Windows Server 2012 test lab:
    1. Step 1: Set up the base test lab configuration
    2. Step 2: Install the Volume Activation Services server role
    3. Step 3: Configure Active Directory-based Activation
    4. Step 4: Verify that Active Directory-based Activation works
    5. Step 5: Configure Key Management Services (KMS)
    6. Step 6: Verify that KMS volume activation works
At same time KMS volume activation requires
a minimum threshold of 25 computers before activation quests will be processed. The verification process described here will increment the activation count each time a client computer contacts the KMS host. However, unless the activation threshold
is reached, the verification will take the form of an error message rather than a confirmation message.
