KMS+init mods+pacman+kdemod+JFS Why is Arch not #1

I have finished tweaking my default install for Arch:
quick install:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Qui … ux_Install
kdemod:
pacman -S kdemod
trimmed and boost boot-up:
http://prasetyams.net/2008/06/27/speedu … t-process/
tweak post-install/candy:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pos … ation_Tips
native framebuffer kernel mode setting and fast virtual terminal switching:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_Graphics
My arch system boots to KDM login in NINE seconds from hitting ENTER and Grub, to a gorgeous kdemod [and fast] KDE4 install. Default install without the above took 19 seconds (still not bad compared to the 'big distros')
Satellite Pro A300 laptop:
Core Duo T5170
3MB DDR2
160GB SATA HDD
Intel 965GM graphics
Intel Wireless 54g
WHY IS ARCH LINUX NOT NUMBER 1. With a little thought a 'desktop package' could be created to achieve the above and knock the hell out of SuSE, Ubuntu, Fedora et.al.
I have used linux since redhat 1.0 (work it out) and I am now FOREVER Arch !

This's #1 for me!
Best is not most.

Why does Calendar not go back to all entries in list mode after upgrading to iOS6?

I have an iPhone 5 running at iOS7.1.1. The Calendar list mode previous to iOS 6 showed all past entries, which I found very useful. After the upgrade, it only showed the previous 12 months (as I recall). All past entries are still present, you just have to exit list mode to see them. I'm asking this now after finding the forum for the answer to rediscover the list function in iOS 7.

• CRM - Reload  in INIT mode : get 0 record

Hi guru,
I am trying to reload  the content of a DSO in INIT mode.  datasourse = 0CRM_SALES_ACT_1
I get 0 record.  is there a setup table in CRM to delete before and fill in ?
Please a help is needed
Thankx in advance

Hi
My Suggestion will be to first check the for the data in the source system using RSA3 , if you are getting the data then what I have found by working with CRM and HCM is that a lot of the data sources are authorisations dependant. i.e. Unless you have the authorisations to extract this sales info, it will not let you bring the data in BI. (Please get your BASIS team to have a quick look).
Let me know what your findings are, I will try to help you more if I can.
Thanks

• Performance issues: why is it not as fast as it should /could be?

hello,
i am an experienced unix/linux user since '98 looking for a new linux distro to install on my shining new Dell precision M65 notebook (2gb ram, dual core, 7200rpm, etc.) and Dell optiplex gx270 pc and i want it to be as fast as it can be.
I really WANT it to be Arch, i love the idea of arch, the basic install, the only get what you need, pacman is nearly as good as apt-get, it boots Really fast, kdemod is cool, the rolling system is awesome ......
....  BUT why is Arch so relatively slow?
i installed the following:
the duke base install
kdemod
kdm
powersaved
ifplugd
xorg
ipw3945d
firefox/thunderbird
pidgin
nvidia-glx
that is all, really.
i was expecting a basic setup like that to be really lightweight and fast but the average load is +1 with X, powersaved (14%), hald(8%), dbus(9%),  and i have a lot of lag. windows drag when moving and firefox startup takes seconds. only booting is Really fast (<30seconds). I am using the nvidia driver but no composite.
I have also tried the full blown bloated sabayon on my latop and even with all the apps, all the bling and compiz enabled by default it is FASTER then my lovable Arch install (a idle load of 0.02 but i just hate emerge/portage/source stuff), I installed Pardus 2007.02 on my desktop for my wife (everything works out of the box and look familiar) and even on the older pc the load is just 0.06 idle and max 0.8 working.
What is going on here. I want to stick with Arch, but this seems really akward to me, why could my system be using all that memory / cpu while doing nothing, no compiz, just firefox and thunderbird.
any insight would be very welcome, there are no errors in the /var/log/* files and only sound and hibernation are not working yet.
thanks,
stefan

hi there all,
i don't know if it is anything to to with X. I did find out that if I leave my pc idle for long enough (+30 mins) that the load will settle down to around 0.06, but as soon as I start using it it flies back up.
booting and shutting down is really fast though. Another thing I noticed is that with using the nvidia driver that i get occasional (one a minute) random "flickers"  across my screen, where it turns slightly black or trembles the screen for a milisecond.
with nvidia-glx i just meant the latest official nvidia drivers (not nv) that i got by "pacman -Sy nvidia"

• Why SLFM is not enabled for Macbook 13" Aluminum late 2008 model?

Hi All,
Does anyone know why SLFM is not enabled for Macbook 13" Aluminum late 2008 model?
I just found this out after I installed bootcamp and Windows 7 on my Macbook 13" with P8600 2.4Ghz CPU 2GB RAM and 250G HDD after more than a year of using it.
After I installed the CPU monitoring widget on Windows 7 and CPUZ, I noticed that the lowest Freq that my Macbook operates even with <5% CPU load is only 1.5Ghz and VID @1.0V.
I installed Coolbook on OSX to confirm what I saw on Windows. I was surprised that SLFM is not visible in Coolbook which is the same result I got from Windows 7 CPU monitoring widget and CPUZ.
I checked with our local Mac support and they got the same results for all of Macbook 13" Aluminums late 2008 model. SLFM is not visible on Coolbook which means, it is not enabled.
I tried to install Coolbook on my wife's Macbook Pro 13" 2010, which has the same spec, P8600 2.4Ghz CPU and 250G HDD. The only difference is the memory which is 4GB RAM. There, SLFM is enabled and works just fine, running at 798Mhz @0.875V.
Can anyone please help confirm if this is really the case for Macbook 13" late 2008 model?
Because I checked the Intel P8600 Datasheet and SLFM should always be enabled. Otherwise, it will affect battery life as well as long term reliability of the CPU.
I would appreciate if the Macbook and Macbook Pro owners in this forum can help confirm using Coolbook the status of SLFM in your own Macbooks. You may use any other tool in checking the SLFM and share it with us if you believe it is more reliable and better than Coolbook. Thanks.

BTW, Here is what I got from Coolbook for comparison. As you can see the late 2008 Macbook has no SLFM info.

• Why can I not import pictures any more? Lightroom says "Your Lightroom 5 64-bit does not work correctly"

Why can I not import pictures any more?
Lightroom says "Your Lightroom 5 64-bit does not work correctly"
Technical informations:
PC with Windows 7 64-bit, Lightroom 5.7.1 64-bit installed.
What I have done:
I downloaded the newest LR 5.71 and installed it again - mode repair; without success
I checked my PC with Norton 360: full scanning and optimizing registry
I restarted the PC and than I installed the LR 5.7 again - repair
Trouble 1:
Two days ago I could work with my LR 5 and to import pictures from a SD was no problem. Now I can start LR 5 and I can watch/modify pictures, but as soon as I try to import new pictures LR 5 stops and gives the message "your LR 5 64-bit does not work correctly - searching for solution". I have not changed anything in my computer since lasttime LR 5 worked properly, only the registry was optimized by Norton 360.
Trouble 2:
I live in Switzerland and my language ist German. I dit not find a place where I can present my problem in German, e.g. a phone number oder email-address oder german-chat. My English is to week for a discussion for computer problems and do understand it.
Help:
I would very appreciate if anybody can help me, either to trouble 1 or to trouble 2. Thanks.

• Unsure why this is not working?

Can anyone give me a pointer as to why this is not working? I put the code from line 16 through 50 in the "...before displaying the page" additional pl/sql section of the wizard. The form wizard created the code from 5 through 15 and 51 through 55. The first error I understand because I think the wizard forgot to end the procedure correctly by saying "end beforeModuleDisplay;" instead of just putting "end;".
If I am right, how can I fix this since the wizard is the one putting in this info? I tried putting the correct end statement in where I put the rest of my code, but that created even more errors.

Hello Albert,
You open a new pl/sql block on line 16, but you have only one 'end' statement.
You can correct this by adding another 'end' statement after line 55 or you can remove the inner PL/SQL block and place it in the procedure itself. Variables can be declared after 'is' on line 14. In your example it's better to do it this way. See example.
Hope this helps...
Nancy.

• HT2648 I want to Repair Disk Permissions, but I do not have disk utility 10.4.3 on my Mac os X. How do I download it? Why did I not get it when I purchased the computer 2 years ago?

I am having frequent pop-up boxes. It is very annoying. It was suggested that I repair permissions, but when I try, my 2 year old computer. with OSX operating systems has an old desk utility, and I cannot use it. How do I acquire disk utility 10.4.3?

Any reason why you have not updated to the final version 10.4.11 of Tiger?
General advice on updating Tiger:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL170
And for Intel Macs here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL172
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there. <br />

* You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.

''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
