KN8 Neo2 Platinum Nightmare - please set me straight!

Hi,
Thank you very much for reading this post.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, as i would like to avoid the RMA process
My problem: Intermittently, machine will not POST – (CD/DVD drives keep flashing/resetting forever)… no “beep”, and pc needs 4sec hold of power to shut down (don’t know if this gives any detail in sequence of post or not).
My Config:
K8N Neo2 Platinum
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Corsair Dual (Twin) DDR 1GB PC3200XLPRO – in “Auto” originally, now in 2-2-2-5 with 2.75 volts
Antec TRUE POWER 450 (modular PSU)
2x Seagate 200MB HD in Raid 0 (stripe) (on SATA 0 and 1)
Floppy
Sony 4x DVD+/-R and LG 52x CDR on IDE 0
EVGA NVIDIA 6800GT 256
BIOS 1.2 (as shipped)
- NO Overclocking
Sequence of issue:
I built the machine last weekend and hooked everything up (I know a mistake) and machine would not post…. So I started unplugging, started with IDE-0 and it posts fine. So I think – ok so my issue is here….replace IDE cable and move drives to IDE 1 and I am fine. Installed windows…soft rebooted many times, fully installed my whole system, programs, drivers, etc. THEN – I did a HARD REBOOT. Problem comes back. I move CD Drives to IDE 0 and it boots fine again!.... Install games, play games for 5+ hours no problems.
Now I get this non-post issue every 3 hard boots or so. First boot after the problem, bios tells me I have a failed OVERCLOCK, adjust in setup…which is BS but I have to go to bios settings, change nothing, then it boots fine.
One other thing – the memory is supposed to be a 2.75 volts according to Corsair, so I changed that (bios seting is RED – not recommended) and this change does not seem to affect anything (can post and operate normally for a while then get no post again).
I have built 10+ systems and this is the most frustrating issue ever for me!!! My guess was:
1) loose connection – nope – reset everything 3x
2) Power – tried using different power connectors for 6800GT card but don’t know if there are any specific issues here (maybe the card needs a connector with nothing else on it?)
3) RAM / CPU / MB issue: I have tried moving ram in slot 2/3 but same issues. I reeeeely don’t want to have to re-seat the athlon64.
THANKS FOR ANY/ALL INPUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And here's an important thing to read :

The Noisetaker probably performed the weakest out of all 3 in the test.  However, considering this PSU is only rated at 470w, compared to 510w and 550w; and it does not have adjustable rails, it did very well.  The rails were all well within reason, but the Noisetaker showed the largest drop, especially on the 12v rail. I think the 6800 Ultra was beginning to suck more juice than the Noisetaker had.  Unfortunately, here is where you can see the downside of dual 12v rails:  there is no "backup" or "reserve" current.
Each 12v rail has about 15 amps of current, compared to the usual 34 amps or so on a normal PSU.  Now, if you add them together, everything is fine.  But the problem arises when you suck too much current from a single rail.  With a regular PSU, the current ceiling is very high(30a or so), so even though you might be running a ton of fans and drives, chances are you can at least unplug something if the rail drops too low.  Also, if you have less fans and drives, then you have more current at your disposal.  However, if you are only working with a 15a current, then your ceiling is much lower.  You have no "reserve" current to draw from that would be designed for fans and drives.  So even if you have a single drive and fan plugged in, you still only have 15a for your motherboard, CPU and graphics card.  And there is no way to access that other 12v rail without running a molex from the second rail.  That is most likely why you see the dip in the 12v rail from idle to load.  Although not huge, it is noticable, and with a smaller PSU would become a problem.
That can explain our problems...!!!

  • MSI KN8 Neo2 platinum & win-xp 64 bit

Now I know this might be in wrong section so dont be coming back with comments...
I got an issue and was wondering if anyone here would know how to solve it.
I tried installing win 64 on a KN8 Neo2 platinum mobo with 2 sata drives in a mirror array...
The install went OK but when I got to desktop it freezed... I rebooted and then nothing.
I know I was using bios 1.4 so I was wondering if that would cause any probs and if I should flash bios to say 1.8...
I used the 64 bit drivers for the NVRAID setup and as far as I can see I got all the relevant nvidia nforce 3 drivers for win 64..
I had to perform a bios recovery for some reason aswell...
I would really appreciate any advice you guys have to offer..
    thanx

WHICH 64-bit driver package did you use?  nVidia shows 6.25 Beta as the last, while MSI shows a version 6.39.  There are also people saying that the nForce4 64-bit drivers work OK for them.  It seems that nVidia has gotten a lot of flack from their response  that there would be no nForce3 64-bit driver update past 6.25Beta and are still talking about  a "future" driver package... for ~6 months now.  Did you make a driver disk from the "chosen" package to install the NVRAID drivers during WinXP/64 installation??
For the moment you may have to mix 'n' match from different packages to get a working system but I'd certainly upgrade your BIOS to 1.8 and maybe 1.B or Syar's 1.C.  I know that 1.8 has worked for me for a while now with WinXP 32-bit and I've no real reason to upgrade - it certainly works better than the previous version I had which had strange pauses in the BIOS Setup screens.  IIRC BIOS 1.4 had an old version of the NVRAID firmware so that could be part of your problem.

  • An employee PLEASE set this straight!

OK, so since around April 12 or something, the audio on Comedy Central AND WGN America sounds compressed, like the treble was set down, and all the high frequencies are gone. I really need help with this, and last night, audio levels returned to normal, but today, its compressed as ever! What is going on with FiOS? And I know its not a CC issue, since CV and DirecTV and fine audio.
PS: When will Viacom HD channels come to FiOS?

I'm having it checked in VHO5 now

  • External Hard Drives -- please set record straight

Are USB external drives good for video or no? Some say that they transfer slower. Some say they dont transfer video at all!!
    Please let me know. Thanks.

USB is no good for video. USB sends info in packets, not in a steady stream, which video files demand.

  • Backup on a 1GHz iMac - please set me straight!

I've had my 1GHZ iMac (running 10.2.8) for a little over three years and have never done a backup. I've been considering it recently as I'd like to upgrade the OS soon. I bought a Western Digital My Book 160GB external hard drive because it was on sale cheap. Then I looked on these boards for backup tips and I'm seeing a lot of advice directing people toward firewire drives. This WD doesn't have firewire. It DOES have USB2 but the iMac doesn't, so I'd be using plain USB.
My backup needs are minimal, but will using a non-bootable USB drive be more trouble than it's worth? Should I return this and find a Firewire model? Thanks for your help!

    Glad to help.

  • KN8 Neo2 Platinum/AMD64-3200+Venice : RAM- best 1GB/2GB -sorted :-)

Just installing my new system, but my old PC2700 RAM refuses to post, so I need a recommendation for the "best bet" for an initial 1GB (with another 1GB later) of PC3200 RAM. System as below in sig. I've already managed to sell my old 1GB, so its not going to be too hard on the wallet :-)
I've had a browse thru various posts, but can't see any concensus. I'm not really into overclocking, but regularly work with large photography, video & music files and am more concerned with stability than overclocking.
I have options currently open for Corsair, Geil, Crucila and Samsung at reasonable prices here in UK.
Any info gratefully accepted, inclkuding those of multiple vendor recommendations. I suppose what I am asking is what I should NOT buy.....
    Thanks,

    G8INA,
If you are running programs that use over 1Gb of RAM then you need 2Gb of RAM (2x1Gb). Now while the Venice Core is better at handling 4 populated DIMM Slots, you are better off only populating two of them.
I would recommend going with just two sticks.
If you do not run programs that use more then 1Gb of RAM to run go with (2 x 512Mb):
If you run programs that use more then 1Gb of RAM to run go with(2 x 1Gb) of the same brands in CAS 2.2.2 which is the highest quality you can get. Now if you are going to overclock, then think about getting PC-4000 from Mushkin, OCZ, or Corsair.
    Take Care,
    Richard

  • AMD Sempron 3100+ and MSI KN8 Neo2 motherboard....

I purchased the MSI KN8 Neo2 Platinum motherboard after reading pretty good reviews about it.   I was wondering if this board was compatible with AMD 3100+ Sempron processor.
I hope someone here can help me out...
    Thanks

Or you can get the NEO2 board and then purchase a socket 939 processor. They are coming out with lower models that will be cheaper. You will then have dual channel memory.
I have the regular 754 NEO and I am 100% satisfied, so either way you should be fine. Be sure and get a really good PSU with lots of amps on the 12v rail.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum Ordered - Advice for a noob please

    Hi there,
this seems like a great forum, was hoping someone could give me some advice - Im trying to pre-empt any major probs....
I am a relative noob to building P.C's - done a few P4 based systems before but this will be my first Athlon based.  This systems primary use will be gaming.  I have the following on order (should be with me next week) : -
    a) MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum Edition SCK 939 Motherboad
    b) AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ 64bit SCK 939 Retail Inc Fan
    c) 160GB Maxtor Calypso 8mb Cache 7200 SATA DHH
    Components I have already
    a) Graphics Card - Nvidia 6800 GT
    b) Memory - Generic 2 X 512MB PC2700 DDR333 RAM
    c) Sound Card - Creative SB Live Value
    d) PSU - Jeantech 450W (22a on 12V Rail)
    e) Case - pretty generic full tower case - no fans attached
    f) CPU FAN - COOLERMASTER HYPER 48 SUPER SILENT HEATPIPE
    g) Spare Hard drive - 120GB Maxtor IDE Hard drive
    h) DVD Drives - 1 x Pioneeer 108 / 1 x Pioneer 104
    I) Monitors - Ilyama 17" TFT & Toshiba 32WL36P LCD
I have some 'noobish' questions - apologies for my ignorance : -
    1) Memory - Will my memory be okay ?  Should I ditch it and buy some Corsair DDR400 (which everyone else seems to have!).  Will performance suffer if I stick with the DDR 333 ? Do I need to adjust settings in BIOS regarding memory timing ? (I only picked up on this from reading through other posts on this board, and am totally clueless on 'timing'- Ive never needed to adjust timing on any previous PC's....!)
    2) Sound Card - will I be better off sticking with the onboard sound on the MSI K8N neo 2 ? Or for best performance do I go with the SB LIve ? (god its a nightmare trying to get updated drivers for this card),  Would I get a noticable performance increase buying an Audigy 2?
    3) Vcore / other power issues - Reading this forum Im kinda scared by many posts along the lines of "..for stability I need to change my memory voltage to xx-V" or "...for a stable system I needed to change my Vcore to xx-V".  Will I need to change the Bios default values on this system just to get it to run stably??
    4) CPU FAN - Are AMD stock fans any good ?  My Hyper 48 is quite highly rated....
    5) Im completely new to SATA drives, but Ive printed off the very useful install guide on this site (which I intend to use).  Is there anything I need to look out for concerning adding my IDE drive also.
I think thats about it just now - if anyone can see any other potential problems with my specs then please let me know.  Im really not trying to be negative / pessimistic - after all the reason I have went for this motherboard is that it is rated as one of the best.  Im just a bit paranoid that the dreaded B.S.O.D awaits me!
On a more positive note - does anyone have similar system specs they use for gaming ?  How well does HL2 / Doom3 / Farcry etc fly J ? I cant wait !
    Thanks for the time

  • 915P/G NEO2 Platinum - Do I have the correct settings? Please help.

    Hi All,
    I am having a nightmare!
Id like to know if the following settings are correct and what the correct BIOS settings should be?
    915P/G NEO2 Platinum
LITE-ON DVD-R - on IDE1 using supplied red cable - using using both ends not middle connection.
    Samsung 250gb SATA - on SATA1
    Samsung 250gb SATA - on SATA2
I messed around with the BIOS a bit and now when ever try to install XP PRO it comes up with the following error:
'REBOOT AND SELECT PROPER BOOT DEVICE OR INSERT BOOT MEDIA IN SELECTED BOOT DEVICE'
I am out of ideas so any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrew

Indeed but how should I set the Drive configurations within the BIOS as the system previously had one single drive attached to the middle IDE red cable??

  • Please Help....K8N Neo2 Platinum SATA

I just built a system from the ground up. ALL  the hardware is brand new. This is an extra system that I decided on building using the athlon64.
Now I have the Neo2 Platinum with a athlon 2800+, 512 ram, a geforce ti4800, and a 80GB SATA harddrive. After I connected everything and powered up the system I did very minor changes to the BIOS. Then I connected the SATA harddrive to the SATA 1 plug. I then installed a fresh copy of windows XP home, and everything worked fine. However, yesterday as i was switching the floppy drive, the systme just shut down on me. When I powered it back up, everything worked fine, i checked the BIOS and it was fine however it was not able to detect mY SATA harddrive. I have loaded all the neccesary drivers, updated to the latest bios, tried 7 different sata cables, plugged the cables in SATA1, 2, 3, and 4 slot, and still it will not recognize my harddrives. Not even in the BIOS. I have 2 DVD rom drives. One on an IDE channel, the other using the SATA 2 plug and they work fine. I bought a brand new SATA harddrive thinking that maybe the harddrive was defective but still it would not recognize my Harddrives. Il appreciate all the help I can get. I am so lost. I tried to explain the situation as clearly as possible.

Not in all cases, but I do it religiously anyway.
I: set the jumper to Clear, then remove the battery, smoke, drink, be merry, walk the dog, chase the kids, chase a girl, whatever.. Then I come back and move the jumper shunt back to Keep and replace the battery.
I work on so many different systems and it makes a difference on some so I just do it all the time.
Additionally, I remove the power cord from the back of the PSU and press the power button on the tower/case to purge the capacitors of any remaining power before I do anything.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum (Zalman 7700AlCu install - PLEASE HELP!)

    Hello,
I know that the Zalman web page lists the 7700 as incompatible with the Neo2 Platinum board.  I've also read the past threads here about installation of the Zalman coolers, and I know that some people have made it work.  I'm just wondering HOW?
Originally, the guy who built my computer had the 7700 installed using the stock MSI backplate and the shorter brass coloered Zalman "nipples" that normally come with the 7000 coolers (don't know how he got ahold of these - I assume he had extras lying around).  This apparently worked temporarily, but eventually the glue on the MSI backplate gave out, and that allowed the entire cooler to come loose, move, and rock back and forth.  Since the stock MSI backplate is only glued on, there is nothing holding it in place but the glue if you remove the stock retention mechanism to which it is mounted.
Since the stock backplate was no longer an option, I decided to try the Zalman backplate.  Unfortunately, the threads in the brass Zalman 7000 mounting nipples are too large to fit into the holes in the Zalman 7700 backplate.  I tried to reinstall using the silver colored Zalman 7700 mounting nipples, but I faced another problem.  The 7700 nipples are too tall!  The entire cooler is loose when you use them, and it doesn't make good contact with the CPU.
Here is my thought.  I have a feeling that if I go back to the (shorter) brass 7000 nipples, and get ahold of a Zalman 7000 backplate (which would obviously have larger holes to fit the brass 7000 nipples), then this just might work perfectly.  I guess the only questions I have are:
    (1) Will the 7000 backplate fit on the Neo2 Platinum?  [I assume it should since the 7000 is listed as compatible with this board on the Zalman web page]
    (2) Will Zalman be willing to send me a 7000 backplate at no charge?
    (3) Has anyone gotten this to work (i.e. mounting a 7700 cooler to a Neo2 Platinum using 7000 hardware)???
Thanks in advance.  Unless someone tells me this proposed installation is doomed to fail, I'll be calling Zalman to request a backplate tomorrow.

    Joey,
Zalman told me nothing other than that they would send me a 7000 backplate at no charge.  My proposed installation method may not work at all.
I can't tell from your photos if you're using stock Zalman hardware (i.e. mounting nipples) with the metal MSI backplate.  Your Asus board installation appears to use springs, which AFAIK, are not supplied with any Zalman HSF.  The photos of your MSI installation is too dark to see the mounting nipples.
Use of the MSI backplate with standard Zalman hardware is a recipe for disaster, as explained in my original post.  The mounting threads in the metal MSI backplate actually protrude up through the motherboard surface by about 1/4", as can be seen in your photos.  Once the glue sticking the backplate to the underside of the motherboard gives out, the backplate will be free to move 1/4" away from the back side of the motherboard, due to the play created by the protruding threads.  Thiis will allow the entire Zalman HSF to move with it.  The HSF will be able to rock back and forth, losing contact with the CPU surface.
Your installation method (with the springs) may well solve this problem.  I can't tell from the photos.  Just be sure that your installation does not rely in any way on the fact that there is glue holding the MSI backplate to the motherboard, as that glue will eventually give out.

  • K8N NEO2 Platinum rebooting

Hi all, just got myself a 64bit MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum board & a 3200+,am happy with it but a couple of days ago i got a blue screen with a long message that i didnt have time to read before the pc rebooted, after the reboot i checked the event viewer log file in administrative tools/control panel but couldnt narrow it down as my particular error code wasnt among the possible causes.
Among some of the possible causes were incorrectly installed USB drivers or the BIOS,i downloaded the latest BIOS update before this problem started(V1.40) which i am using now,i used the MSI live update software to flash it which i did in windows mode.Sorry for prattling on!well it did it again tonight and i managed to read a bit of the writing on the blue screen which mentioned flashing the bios to the latest version.I was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem and if so could you please advise me? My K8N Neo Platinum [754] did not include a NB fan. But this usually means the overall size of the heatsink is larger. If you remove the fan from yours, the size of the heatsink will not be big enough to cool your NB. As for temps, I've never seen my NB get hotter than 45'C. Note that the core on my NB should be slightly different than yours.
You could try to use the BIOS fan control for the NB. If set correctly, it should reduce some noise.

  • Need help with k8n neo2 platinum

I've just installed a new k8n neo2 platinum s939 board with a venice core 3200+ cpu the htt is 2000 and multiplier 10x.
I've gone to the core cell menu and set the htt to 4x (seemed to be this at default) and the max mem clock at 166 (more about this in a moment), the fsb will go quite easily up to 250mhz even 255mhz, but when I try 260 Mhz the machine when it reboots shows the initial slash screen but then goes to a blank screen with the cursor flashing in the top left hand corner, I can't even get back into the bios setup without clearing the cmos.
The odd thing is that the adjust cpu vid is showing a voltage of 1.50 and not 1.40 or startup.
Anyway with the fsb at 250mhz the bios screen is showing the Current ddr clock at 208 mhz ( not the max memclock setting of 166) the memory in the motherboard ( a crucial 512meg ddr333 single stick) seems to perform OK according to memtest which shows no errors after 2 cycles.
Any attempt to get to 260mhz fsb appears to fail even by upping the cpu vid to 1.525v unless i adjust the cpu voltage setting which by default is set to (by cpu vid) to +3.3%. Doing this enables me to get to fsb 260mhz but the memtest fails ( even when I set the max memclock to 133, which shows my current ddr speed at 174mhz, well below the 208mhz which appeared stable with the fsb at 250mhz?)
So firstly why are there two cpu voltage settings in the bios when my manual only shows 1 (there is no mention of this cpu vid setting?
How is it that my memory is stable at 208mhz with a fsb of 255mhz but unstable at 174mhz with the fsb set at 260mhz?
Why does the memory clock lock not appear to be working, the memory should be fixed at 166mhz but infact increases with fsb?
    I have bios revision 1.5.
Please help as I am not familiar with the bios settings for this nforce 3 chipset, they seem rather odd to me. I'm sure my venice core 3200+ cpu can get beyond 250mhz fsb, I have another pc with a venice core 3000+ cpu which runs quite happily at 270mhz fsb.
PS I've tried reducing the htt to 3x but the same thing happens.

OK further feed back, I can get to over 260mhz fsb but the system is not stable the memory runs OK with mem test but I have problems with prime95.
I had to up the cpu core voltage to 1.53v to get to 260mhz using the cpu voltage setting in the bios and setting a 5% increase. increasing the cpu vid setting to 1.55v did not seem to do anything at all the core voltage was still at 1.43v.
I upped the mem voltage to 2.6v from 2.5 but still could not get the system to be stable, it may be that the memory is holding the system back but I don't want to pay for better memory at the moment. Unless anyone has got any other ideas it looks like I may be forced to settle with 250mhz, well still a 500mhz increase maybe not that bad. I've now to try 3d benchmarking using my radeon 9600xt and 3dmark 03.

  • Kingston HyperX Memory & K8N Neo2 Platinum

    Hello.
    I have a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum board (BIOS 1.3) with AMD 64 3000+ 939 CPU.
I am trying to run this with 2 Kingston HyperX PC3200 512MB memory (KHX3200ULK2/1G).  This is the latest "Ultra-low Latency" memory from Kingston.
When I run this memory with NO overclocking at 2-2-2-5-1 at 2.7 volts (standard setting for this memory) with a single module, I get NO errors.  When I try both chips in dual-channel mode, I get errors (on MemTest86).
(I also get errors if I run this memory on "Auto" setting in BIOS)
I CAN run 2 sticks of Crucial PC3200 512MB (regular, not Ballistix)  at standard settings in dual-channel with no errors.
Has anyone got this memory to work on this board in dual-channel mode?  If so, how? At what timings?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should be able to at least find a sweeter spot.
You may even have to go to 2T and non aggressive settings.
Why would the timings work when in single channel mode, but not in dual channel, when the Crucial memory works fine in dual channel at the same timings used in single channel?
On a side note, the Kingston pair was purchased together in a matched set, while the 2 Crucial sticks (actually the memory from my system) were bought seperately over a month apart.
The timings that RZT tried are the exact ones Kingston specifies for that model, there should be NO reason whatsoever they wouldn't work at those timings, dual or single channel.
Please correct me if I am wrong...
First of all, I said "in the meantime," meaning until someone else came up with a better answer. If I have problems with memory, regardless of what the manufacturer says' I hunt for a sweetspot (if there is one).

That's like trying to compare apples to oranges. Two different manufacturers and likely different chips onboard, not to mention likely different PCB design.
What I suspect is either one stick is further out of spec than the other and they are not a properly matched pair. Kingston has a history with the nForce chipset which leaves little to be desired.
That is why you might see very similar systems, and one works with the same ram, and the other doesn't. It's called parametric differences. In short, one stick my be at the upper end of the spec and the other stick may be at the lower end. Then, throw in the motherboard, and the CPU, (now with the onboard memory controller) while we're at it, and you have a real touchy situation. There is little room for lower quality. That is why matched pairs exist. Doesn't mean it's mandatory, however.

I take it you know this person, otherwise this is not making sense or you are a pretty slick hijacker
Matched set can still be flawed, I get em from the best once in a while. It may not be the RAM at all. Only way to tell for sure is to try it on another identical system or try another pair that passes muster in another identical system. All this speculating is useless unless you've exhausted all possibilities.

Not wrong, maybe a little overoptimistic. Some situations warrant different measures. It's not that black and white, nor is it written in stone. At this point it only indicates there is indeed a problem, where it lies, would be better off using a dartboard to guess at this point.
