Knock-off Ink Queers Canon Printer Output

Sorry, I didn't know where else to go with this.
I have about a 4-year old Canon color printer. It used to print very nicely, if slowly. To save money I bought a package of that knock-off printer ink at Costco. I've been having trouble ever since. The print-out colors are not the same as the on screen color. They seem to be faded or otherwise 'off'. Colors seem to be having trouble mixing.
Yes, I have gone back to using authentic Canon cartridges. Yes, I have cleaned the heads with alcohol and clean cloth. Yes, I have done deep cleaning, head alignment, etc. My friend, who recommended the knock-off ink has also been having trouble with his Canon printing, too.
We wonder what can we do? Any ideas?

I would agree with Ji~m's assessment; you may have not printed enough to clear the channels in the print head to purge all the problem ink. I'd suggest you run the printer's cleaning routing until the problem clears up. Note, though, that some cheap knockoff ink can cause permanent problems with the printer, for which the only solution is an expensive repair or replacement of the printer.
For the future, be very cautious about using any ink not from the printer's vendor or approved by them. Some ink works fine and some, as I said, can completely (and in some cases permanently) mess up your printer. Many vendors will balk at honoring a warranty for any problems that may be related to use of non-approved ink.
Good luck; I'm afraid you may need it.

  • Can't print to lexmark model X5470 printer. Get knocked off line when I try to print a document.

Anytime I try to print a document using Lexmark model X5470, i.e. boarding passes from Delta.com, or any other web site, I get knocked off line.
However; I can print the same items when on Internet Explorer, Safari, and Google Chrome with no problems.'''
I have an HP deskjet that works fine on Mozilla, but the Lexmark X5470 will not print from Firefox. It will; however, print a PDF document from Mozilla.

This may be a printer driver issue. I recommended first connect printer directly to computer and check for Software Updates, this will tell you if you have any printer updates.
If you are using a Mac computer follow troubleshooting steps in HT3500
(Basically, navigate to Print & Scan in System Preferences and right-click or control-click on printer from left and choose Reset Printing System, then re-add preferred printer.)
If you are using a Windows computer download and install Bonjour Print Services DL999

You posted in the OS 9 & below forum. What OS X version are you using? What model Canon printer? Canon printers have a test print capability (open the Printer Utility). What happens when you do a test print? Are all the printer cartridges in their proper location? Sometimes when you print "black", the printer uses a mixture of the colors to get "black". In the Printer Utility, check the levels of the other cartridges. There may be one color that is clogged.

  • Text not printing with Black Ink on Canon i560

I've been having a pretty annoying problem with my Canon i560: When printing black text, instead of using the black ink, the printer mixes black from the color inks. This has been a problem for a little while but recently, the colors got a little offset so it became really obvious.
Also, I just received an update for the Canon printer drivers and according to the Apple page, the Canon i560 is supported and the drivers are actually updated.
I'm pretty sure that it's a driver problem because I can print from a Windows virtual machine to the exactly same printer all other variables remaining the same - and guess what: When printing from Windows, black is black, colors are colors, as one would expect with this kind of printer.
So, does anyone have an idea how I can make my make send the right signals to my Canon i560?

Ah, sorry, I missed that when reading your reply. Probably should have re-read it. However, I have just made a test-print from TextEdit with the "Grayscale Printing" checkbox enabled - and I'm still getting precisely the same ugly, greenish result.
Then it is not working as it should be and it is either the driver or the core printing system. To check both there is alternate driver available called Gutenprint. With this driver suite installed you can create another printer queue on the Mac, this time selecting the Gutenprint i560 driver. When you then print and have the i560 Gutenprint driver selected, change to the Printer Features menu and then select the General tab in Feature Sets submenu and then set the Color Model to Grayscale. Does this work correctly?
And with the Canon driver, if you want to repair the colour offset, you can go to Print & Scan, select the i560 using the Canon driver and then open Options & Supplies. Then select the Utilities tab and click on Open Printer Utility. This will open the Canon IJ Printer Utility. From here you can select the Test Print menu and then Print Head alignment.

  • Changed ink on Canon MP620 and no longer prints

MP620. No longer prints after ink change

    Hi Lruthday,
If the printer was printing fine prior to the ink change, please remove the recently installed ink tanks and print head from the printer, then reseat them in the printer, ensuring that all tape has been removed from the bottom of the ink tanks.  Once this has been performed, if the ink still does not print, please follow the steps located at the link below to perform at least one cleaning and two deep cleanings on the printer to try and get the ink to print:
    Print Head Cleaning
    Print Head Deep Cleaning
If the ink still does not print after performing the cleanings, the printer will require servicing.  Please call or email us at one of the methods on the Contact Us page to obtain your servicing options.

  • Canon printer MP620 and Mac OSX 10.7.5 not communicating

After having to reset my Airport Extreme because it was not communicating over WiFI with my ios devices (iPad and iPhone), it has apparently knocked off the printer communication capabilities.  Got a "communication error" message.  Per some of the forums,  I went into preferences/(print and scan) and deleted the printer hoping to add it back in and am now stuck.  The add printer dialog box is greyed out and will not add a printer.  I added all the current driver updates. Before I just tether the computer to the back of the Mac via USB to print that way, I was hoping there might be a solution to restore wireless communication.  Anyone have any solutions?

    pessman wrote:
But when I tried to print wirelessly, it gave the message "printer not connected" with a yellow lightning bolt.
If you tried to print using the MP620 printer that was created for the USB connection, then you will get this "printer not connected" message because the printer USB cable is not physically connected to the Mac.
If you only have the one MP620 printer in Print & Scan then you will need to create another printer for when the MP620 is connected to your wireless. To do this, with Print & Scan open, click the plus button and with the Default view selected you should see the MP620. Note that it may first show with Bonjour Scanner in the Kind column. This is for the scanner component. If you wait a bit longer, a second MP620 should appear showing canonijnetwork in the Kind column. Select this one and the Print Using menu should change to Canon MP620 series. Click Add to complete and then try a print to this MP620.
Another thing to note. With 2 MP620's appearing in the printers list, you want to make sure you know which is the correct one. By selecting say the USB connected printer (which will show your computers name in the Location field when you select it in Print & Scan) you can change its name by selecting Options & Supplies then the General tab. In the Name field you may want to change this to MP620 USB. Or change the wireless connection to MP620 WiFi.

  • Canon Printer Software 2.3

On Monday I installed my new Canon Pixma MX870 all-in-one, and it's working beautifully on the wireless network.
Today Software Update tells me that I need Canon Printer Software Update 2.3. What exactly will this replace? I can't figure it out, and I'm not sure what would need replacing so quickly — especially since the Canon site doesn't show a newer download.
    Thanks!

    Hello Sandra,
The Canon Australia web site is showing the v10.30.3 driver, which appears to be the primary reason for the v2.3 update. According to the information provided by Canon, the v10.30.3 driver was released for the following reason.
"The problem found in rare cases that printing cannot be performed when displaying the ink level in the network environment has been rectified."
So unless you are having the problem above, then I don't think you must have this update. And if your printing is working fine, then sometimes you are better off not doing the update as it can stop you from printing.

  • My canon printer ip3600

my canon printer ip3600 has just come up with an error message that tells me to unplug it and take it to a service centre.
This printer was working perfectly until today
Please advise how I can clear the flashing lights

After digging a little more, I have a few more questions to you guys, if you don't mind.
    1) Is it possible, at least in theory, that a profile has been created with its rendering curves adjusted in a way that BPC is sort of built-in?
AFAIK, BPC is not a part of ICC specification or a property of either the source or destination profile. It's a proprietary algorithm developed by Adobe, which calculates how the black should be shifted up, so that they don't end up looking like in Ian's example. My iP3600 being a low-end consumer device, maybe Canon decided to do it behind the scenes, so that any untrained amateur could get good/better result without doing BPC in Photoshop.
First, I've found an on-line printing guide by Canon which explicitly says "turn off BPC" (see bottom of page 5).
Second, my profiles' shadow regions look very different from any other profiles I've been looking at. Most profiles have a very distinct "toe", which shows shadow blocking and which the BPC corrects. My Canon profiles, on the other hand, have a very smooth shadow region, which lead me to belive they are adjusted for compensating shadow blocking.
Most profiles have a "toe" in their rendering curves. Mine don't
    2) If my suspicions are true, can such profiles as my Canon's be considered faulty profiles?
    3) If these are valid profiles, and even they are faulty, is not having BPC available in Lightroom acceptable? (You're telling me BPC almost always gives better results — it means there are some cases when it doesn't.)
    4) And the last, rhetorical question. I often hear that canned profiles suck. Wtf? Is printer profiling rocket science or something? Why are manufacturers unable to make decent profiles for their own ink and paper?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Illustrator CS3 - Print - Output - Wont allow me to select Separations

    Hi there
I'm silkscreening for the first time.  The prepping process should be really simple right?  Separate colour layers, using Illustrator, then print each layer onto transparency sheets.  Well I'm about to loose my mind.
The image is CMYK, its a single spot colour (I think) which is red and the outlines are black.  Printer is a Canon ix6500.
I can't seem to separate the colours in Illustrator CS3?!  Why?!  When selecting Print > Output > Mode > it won't allow me to select Colour Separations.
I've tried to overcome this by selecting Printer > Adobe Postscript and PPD > Canon ix6500 series.  This allows me to select Colour Separations, but then it won't print, it only saves it as a PDF, and prints it as is.
PLEASE HELP!!!  Any advice would be appreciated!!  I'm going out of my mind here!!

I'm silkscreening for the first time. The prepping process should be really simple right?
It is. But you're misunderstanding the whole principle of color separation.
    Separate colour layers...
No. Forget Layers. Layers has nothing to do with color separations. Think of Layers as nothing but an organizational tool for the stack of objects in your file. Color separation is the generation of a separate print for each ink that will be printed.
...then print each layer onto transparency sheets.
No. The image for each ink is printed on its own sheet.
    The image is CMYK...
For clarity, don't call it an image. That makes it difficult to figure out what you're talking about. This is Illustrator; an object-based layout program. Your design can contain any number and combination of raster images, vector paths, and text objects. The word "image" in the context of a program like Illustrator always suggests a raster image object. If you're referring to a raster image object contained in the file, call it that: a raster image. If you're talking about your whole artwork, call it the design or the document. Don't call it "the image".
...its a single spot colour (I think)
That's self-contradictory. Nothing can be CMYK and at the same time a single spot color.
Here's a simple key to understanding color separation: Don't think in terms of "colors." Think entirely in terms of inks. In your immediate context, how many inks are going to be used to print with individual silkscreens?
By definition, a CMYK color is built up by overlaying a combination of up to four specific inks: Process Cyan, Process Magenta, Process Yellow, and Process Black. (Note the word "process" here, refering to "four-color process.")
By definition, a spot color is a Swatch (in Illustrator) which represents a single ink.
So "spot color" and "process color" are antithetical. "CMYK" is germane to process color, not spot color. Although process color can be done by silkscreen printing, spot color is more common, and I'm assuming that's what you are targeting.
So it's simple, when you think like this:
Ask yourself: How many inks are going to be allowed to print this design? (Two: a black ink and a red ink.)
Therefore, create that many (2) Swatches in Illustrator. Make sure they are defined as Spot Color Swatches. Use only those two Swatches in your entire design.
You can name those two Spot Color Swatches anyway you want. It doesn't matter. There is a common misconception that Spot Color Swatches must be named like (or even selected from) Swatches in the Pantone Swatch Library. Not so. Regardless of how you name them, each color separation is going to print to its own separation "plate" and the actual image on that "plate" (or film, or vellum) is going to be black. This is true in both process and spot color. In spot color work, each Spot Color Swatch--again, regardless of how you name it-- is going to be printed to its own "plate" and the image on that plate will be black. The name of the Spot Color Swatches, therefore, is nothing more than a convention by which to convey to the printing house what inks you intend to be used for each separation "plate."  Obvously, it makes the most sense to name your Spot Color Swatches according to the names of the actual silkscreen inks that will be used (ex: "Nazdar Fire Red"), if you know them. If not, simply naming them "SpotRed" and "SpotBlack" will be fine.
Which brings me to a point of common confusion with which I think you are struggling: Exactly parallel to the matter of merely naming your Spot Color Swatches is the matter of merely coloring your Spot Color Swatches for on-screen display. There is a common misconception that Spot Color Swatches must be selected from some pre-existing Swatch Library (ex: Panone). Again, not so. So long as you define a Swatch as Spot Color, you can use any "color mixer" to specify any color you want for how it is displayed on-screen. You can color your Spot Color Swatch using either the RGB color sliders, or the CMYK sliders. Again, it does not matter one whit. Using the CMYK sliders to color your Spot Color Swatches does not make it "a CMYK color" (i.e.; a process color). So long as the Swatch is designated a Spot Color Swatch it's still defining a spot color (a single ink) and will print to only one separation "plate". Obviously, it makes the most sense to try to color your Spot Color Swatches to approximate how the actual corresponding ink will look in print. But the truth is, it doesn't matter. You could, for example, use CMYK sliders to color your Spot Color Swatch named "Nazdar Fire Red" so that it looks lime green on screen. If you did, the separation plate would still be labeled "Nazdar Fire Red", and it would still have a black image on it, and the color in the final printed result would simply be a matter of what physical ink the printer loaded his silkscreen with.
Again, to summarize that: Using CMYK sliders to color a Spot Color Swatch does not make it "a CMYK color" in terms of color separation. That is, it does not make it a process color. As long as the Swatch is defined as a Spot Color Swatch, it will print to only one color separation plate.
Finally, Layers: Don't worry at all about which Swatch is used on which Layer. You can have a thousand red fills and/or strokes, and a thousand black fills and/or strokes applied to a kazillion different objects, and those objects can be arranged in any stacking order on any number of Layers, or all on one Layer. It doesn't matter. If you've only defined two Spot Color Swatches, and you've only used those two Swatches in your design, then when you print the design to color separations, you will still only get two separations: one for SpotRed, one for SpotBlack (or whatever you named your Spot Color Swatches).
    Printer is a Canon ix6500.
The question regarding your desktop printer is always: Is it a PostScript printer? That is, does it contain a (firmware) PostScript interpreter, or does its driver contain a (software) PostScript interpreter? If not, it can't print color separations. If this is your problem, there is a workaround, and a particularly popular one in screen printing, sign making, and other industries: You can "print" to a PDF "virtual printer" (i.e.; software which pretends to be a printer). If you have Acrobat (that's Acrobat, not Reader) installed, and if you are on Windows, you probably have a virtual printer named Adobe PDF installed. If so, you can select that as your "printer" and "print" color separations to it. If you've built your design correctly the resulting PDF will have one page for each ink. (The image on each page will be black.) You can then print those PDF pages to your non-PostScript printer. (This workflow is quite common in small screen printing shops.)

  • Snow Leopard and Canon Printer Drivers - significant unhelpful change

Is there any work around for the following? I have a new mac book pro
with snow leopard. Which means I downloaded the new Canon driver for
Pixma 9500. And am now using Lightroom 3 rather than 2.
An option that used to exist no longer exists. It used to be when I
chose a paper profile (say Canon Premium Paper Pro) I could still
manage color options in the driver. I could adjust slightly the reds
or if it were black and white I could change the tone (warm tone/cool
tone). Now, which I chose a paper profile, those options are "blanked out." I
can't use them. Is this because of Snow Leopards CUPS functionality rather than the IJ.
Given how many variables there are with printing and getting the right
image, I really wish I had the option of adjusting my printer output even when I'm using a paper profile.
The options exist if I let the printer manage the colors (as opposed to
using the profiles) but the image is much farther off to begin with and
requires much more experimenting. I have not reloaded Elements 6 and Canon Easy Print Pro. I wonder if it will let me fiddle with color options? Or Elements 9 with an updated Canon Easy Print Pro.
I'm disappointed that I've lost this option by upgrading my hardware and software. I'd be grateful for any advice or feedback.

I don't have Lightroom to confirm this but maybe the application is contributing to your issue.
Looking at the menus of the v10.36.2.0 driver, which is the latest version of the Canon driver you would be using with the Pro 9500, there is the Quality & Media menu and the Color Options menu. Through the Q&M menu you can select the Canon paper types and then via the Color Options menu you can adjust the colors.
But if you open the Color Matching menu and change the setting from Canon Color Matching to ColorSync and then select a paper type you then find that the sliders in Color Options are not available. Maybe Lightroom is set to use ColorSync and thus the adjustment in the Color Options menu is not available for you.

  • "Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the software update server." Running Mavericks, Canon printer. What do I do?

We have a canon printer and it connects fine to my boyfriend's HP. I can't get it to connect to my macbook though--when I plug it in with USB it asks me if I want to install the software, has me agree ot the user terms and conditions, and then I get the error message. I've installed all updates, tried turning my computer on and off. Where do I go from here?

Did you install the Software Update beforehand? I believe you need this so that your Mac's database will update on your newly connected devices. Try the solutions here. I just did what it says there and then restart my computer and my router after all the process and it works for me. Goodluck!

  • Problem with HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3515 printer

Hello. First of all I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year!
I recently bought a HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3515 printer. The printer works fine (prints, scans and copies). There is only one problem with it. It returns me an error when I'm shutting it off. This happens very often but not always, it is kinda annoying. The error is displayed as: ERROR CODE 0X02B7C2ED SM_MODULE C  (the error is also shown on the image). I tried to Google the problem but without effects. I don't know what could be the problem. Can someone help me please, because I have no idea what could be the issue. Thanks for any replays.

    Hello musidi,
I would like to provide you with some troubleshooting steps to hopefully resolve this issue with your HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3515 e-All-in-One Printer. I believe that error code OXC4EB981B is actually referring to a carriage jam.
Click on the link below and follow the steps listed:

  • Printing Problem on Canon Printer

    Hi Gurus,
    Greetings and Thanks in advance!
I have problem in Invoice printing on new Canon LBP 2900 B printer. Whenever I print on this printer the one character from right side does not print. Whereas if the same printing we are doing on HP Laserjet printer it comes perfectly.
I tried to create a new output device through SPAD in which I have used following:
Device Type: SWIN Windows printing via SAPlpd (since i didnt find Canon printer in the list so i used windows standard)
    Device Class: Standard Printer
Host Spool Access Method: G:Front End Printing with control Tech.
    Host Printer: _Default
But it was giving the same problem. Please suggest the solution.
    Regards
    Rajesh
