Knocking out a shape

Using CS3 on a Mac 10.4.11
I can do this easily in Illustrator - using Pathfinder - but I'm stumped on how to do it in Photoshop
I have a solid colour rectangle which is a shape layer; from a photo I cut out the figure of a person, and I want to knock out the silhouette of the person into the rectangle so that I have a person-shaped-hole in the rectangle
Is it simple and I've overlooked something?

Layer Mask. And you can turn a selection of the outline of the figure into a Path and subtract it from the Vector Mask path if need be.

  • How to knock out the shape of a placed object

This is a montage of approximately 250 small images in ID CS5. Each photo is a separate object. I would like to knock out the shape of the dog in silhouette to reveal the background layer, which is underneath the small images and can't be seen in this picture. Then I would like to add a drop shadow to give the background layer some depth.
I know how to do this with either text or a shape created in InDesign, but I'm having trouble getting it to work for a placed object. I've tried using the silhouette as an EPS, AI and PSD but can't figure it out.

Draw a large frame to cover the page. Place the dog over that and use the
pathfinder panel to cut the dog out of the frame. Now group the little
images and cut them to the clipboard. Paste into the frame with the cutout.

  • Knocking out from shape mode

    Using CS3
I know how to use "Shape mode > subtract from shape" to knock out a hole in a shape - when there are only two items involved; but how do I do this:-
I had three squares side by side, each a different colour; and I wanted to knock out an arrow shape over the top of them. The result I'm getting is either knocking out from only one of the shapes; or all the squares turn to the same colour.
    Probably very simple.........

If, for whatever reason, you needed to keep your artwork all vector (opacity masks introduce raster elements if the artwork must go to print):
    1. Select the arrow shape
    2. Object>Path>Divide objects below
    3. Direct select the paths that represent the (now broken up) arrow and Delete.

  • Can the stroke on type knock out specific layers but not others?

I'm mainly an Id and Photshop person but I've been asked to do some maps for a publication we're putting together.
I'm probably being fussy but I've come up against a question that I'm just unable to resolve with the knowledge I have. Searching on forums hasn't helped either.
Anyway, this is what I've got:
The grey background, type, stroke on type and the islands are all on different layers.
What I want to end up with is the stroke on the type knocking out the black outline stroke on the islands but being invisible over the grey background, like so:
    Does anyone have any ideas?

You can get that if you're willing to work with a duplicate of the country shapes.
    See:
    http://www.m-server.de/m_g/Knockout-cs5.ai
All relevant appearances are applied at layer level. Target the layer in the layer panel and see appearance panel for the options.

  • Opacity mask is also knocking out drop shadow. Grrr.

    Hi everyone,
I'm having a problem with Illustrator CS6 that's really bugging me and there must be a simple fix that I'm missing.
I have editable text with a linked opacity mask. The opacity mask contains strokes with an art brush applied to 'scratch' out parts of the text.
    See below for example:
I don't want the opacity mask to knock out the drop shadow (much like how "Layer Knocks Out Drop Shadow" works in Photoshop), but just knock out the text only. See below for an example of what I want the end result to be:
BUT, and here's the problem, I want the text to remain editable.
I know one workaround is that I could convert the text to outlines, make it a compound path, expand the strokes on the opacity mask, make those a compound path too, and then Subtract/Minus Front the scratches from the text object and then reapply the drop shadow, BUT, this renders the text uneditable.
I've tried playing with the options in the Transparency panel, ie: Opacity & Mask Define Knockout Shape but nothing has worked.
    What am I missing??
Thanks so much in advance for your help!!

    Hi Jacob,
Thanks so much for the detailed instructions. I get through step 4 no problems but I run into problems with the way I try to select the items for step 5.
Let's say I have completed step 4 and am ready to begin step 5. When I am in my Layers panel, I select the scratches that are now masked by the non-drop shadowed text:
I then click into the the Opacity Mask editing mode [per your instructions "5) Select the Opacity Mask from 4)"] and now the mask is selected:
The problem begins when I have to effectively shift-select the mask and the live text from 1 (the original text with the drop shadow).
To begin, I still have the opacity mask selected (as shown above) and then when I click the left object preview box (as circled below)
to get back into the full Layers panel (to select the live text), now the mask becomes DEselected and the object becomes selected. How do I keep a mask selected and yet go back to in the Layers panel to select other items from there?
    Thanks!

  • Knocking out a texture in a pice of art

How do you knock out a texture in a piece of art so that it seperates and one piece of art is left?
I am trying the pathfinder but can't seem to get it to seperate so I am left with one piece of art.

There's a couple of different ways ( i.e., compound paths, masks, clipping paths, etc. ).  You do not specify if it is vector art or bitmap art.  If it's vector, you could create a compound path / mask combo because you want the inside shape gone.  First, I'd create the outside shape and then the inside shape > make sure the inside shape is on top > choose Object > Compound Path.  Then, select Object > Make Clipping Mask.  The same method could be used for bitmap artwork, but you might have better results using Photoshop.

  • Can I change the background color of the title " Knock Out" ?

    Hello,
I am facing a problem with editing the title background, the original title background seems to be set as" transparent" or "black" , while I need it not to be black, but make it white or into any other color...
I tried to copy the title "Knock Out" and edit in Motion 5, added a triangle as big as the background and put it on the bottom, but seems it's not working with such method...
Then I tried to change the player background into white ( in the menu of prefernces) , it turned out to be white " sometimes" when I do a playback test... but when I export it into a quicktime movie, it remain the same black background... Anyone know how-to? Thanks in advance!

    Hello, Andy
Thanks for your help, I tried to do the same thing, putting a custom generator underneath the title, but seems it's not working... I guess like what Tom said, it's transparent, and if I put a color underneath it, it became all white... like what I show on the photo
The problem is that this method helps for any other titles, but not for the title" Knock Out", coz when we put knock out on our film, the text color will be all depends on your film, and placing a custom background to it will end up the text beccoming the exact same color of the custom background...  but what I need is to keep the text transparent as what it was, so that i can show the film thru the text... at the same time, the background should be white... Any ideas? It's bugging me:(
    Thanks for help anyway!
The first photo was putting a custom background, but it showed up all white
The seconf one was what I need, but all I can do is change the payer background to white... and it end up the same black background when I export it...

  • ITunes is knocking out the audio on my Windows XP

Recently a strange problem has occurred. iTunes was functioning just fine three days ago but now when I launch iTunes I receive this error message from iTunes:
"iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly."
The result is that I get no sound when playing iTunes, either audio or video. When I reboot my computer my audio devices are working just fine and I can play audio from other sources such as youtube or other internet sites. Once I attempt to launch iTunes, I get the error message and then no audio works on my computer no matter what I try to play from.
Before I try to launch iTunes, my system audio devices are all working properly. After I attempt to launch iTunes, the control panel tells me that there are no audio devices installed. If I do a hardware reinstall of the audio device it will work until I launch iTunes again. iTunes is knocking out the devices.
I have reinstalled iTunes. I have updated iTunes. The same things happens. I have tried everything I can think of.
    You are my only hope.
    Sony Vaio   Windows XP

Possible resolution...we'll see if it takes. I removed all hardware and software that had anything to do with audio and video and then added things back one at a time, testing the iTunes after each reinstall. When I reinstalled my Logitech Quickcam Orbit MP and then started iTunes the error message and the audo problem returned. I removed the cam and then tried again and iTunes was fine. So I think that might have been the issue...although we'll see. At least iTunes is working now and I was able to watch the season finale of Heroes which was a great relief. I am sad to see the Petrelli's dead but at least Hiro was able to find himself. Anyway thanks for all your help and I hope that iTunes remains friendly to me.

  • Object set to overprint in InDesign CS5.5, but in fact knocks out

    Hi
I created a document in InDesign CS5.5 that had a background image and, on top of that, a small circle to act as a cutter guide so that the printer knew where to drill a hole for binding. I set the circle to 'overprint' in the attributes pane, and then exported the layout under the PDF/X-1a:2001 setting in Acrobat. Later, the printer said that the circle was in fact knocking out from the background image, even though separations printed from my laser showed the circle on its own separation and no hole knocked out of the image. Any idea what I've done wrong?
Many thanks if anyone can put me right - Andi

Hi Rob, Thanks for your reply.
Yep the cutter is set up as two different colour Pantone + CMYK spots in Illustrator- (I did CMYK+CMYK coated because you can't seem to change the name of the Pantone Coated colours).
I have looked at the Object inspector above ( I was relying on turning on and off the pantone colours to see if the overprint was working - when I turned them off the photo below was knocked out).
However, the object inspector says Overprint = True.
Thanks for your help with this

  • Connecting to a projector knocks out trackpad

Whenever my wife connects her MacBook Air to a projector, it knocks out the use of her trackpad. The mouse pointer simply jumps around when you try to move it. Connecting an external mouse brings full control back.
Is there any solution out there for this?

This has been reported before. I seem to recall it's a hardware incompatibility issue, possibly related to poor grounding in the connected external device. I don't think there is an easy fix unless you can correct the issue in the projector.

  • How do i output CMY reg marks over BLK master reg mark without the BLK being knocked out on BLK film

how do i output CMY reg marks only CMY films where they are over the BLK master reg mark without the BLK being knocked out on BLK film

You're evidently doing some kind of custom registration, but not explaining what it is.
First, what kind of printing are you doing that requires ten seps (CMYK and six spots)?
By definition, the Registration Swatch prints solid on all seps, both process and spot. But you talk of a CMY registration mark as if it is distinct and separate from K. Don't you also want your CMY seps to be registered not only to each other but also to the K?
You mention a "master" registration (as opposed to…?) needing to appear on the K sep. If a registration mark only appears on a single sep, what is it going to serve to register to; and how if there is no corresponding mark on the other sep(s)?
You seem to be under a not uncommon misconception that separations are somehow associated with Layers. They're not, unless you just want to organize your drawing that way for some reason.
If you want to create your own registration or fold or other printer marks which separate only to specific process inks, simply create and assign Swatches defined with 100% values of the desired component inks. There is no need to set these marks to overprint.
If you want to create your own marks which separate only to specific spot inks, those will need to involve object-level overprinting. You do not have to do that using multiple objects. You can assign multiple Strokes to a single path and set the overprint attribute on the Strokes individually.
It almost sounds like you are designing for screen printing on garments, and want to use registration marks. But because there is no "trim" region on the garment, you are trying to build the files in such a way that the marks end up being overprinted (therefore hidden) by subsequent inks. The default assumption in forums like this is always commercial offset printing. Otherwise, you should always state the printing method for which you are designing and describe the pertinent parameters.
    Edit:
    >"... this is a silk screen process with each colour applied over the other..."
We were typing at the same time. So it's as I suspected (or similar). Your description of what the printer wants is still confusing.

  • My Airport Express was knocked out by a lightning surge

My Airport Express was knocked out by a lightning surge through the exterior cable from the street. Can it be mended? The cable modem attached to the Airport extreme was also knocked out although still powered by electrcity from the wall. The Airport Extreme that was attached to the modem was completely dead! Anythting can be done to revive it!

Sorry, but in most cases it is not possible to repair lightning damaged products. Unfortunately, you'll likely need to replace them. If you have an Apple store in your vicinity, you might want to contact them to discuss your options.
In the future, you might want to invest a high quality surge protection type power strip to help protect your senstive electronic components.

  • Clipping path in PS is not knocking out areas inside paths

Sorry if the thread title is rather oblique but I'm having a little trouble articulating what my issue is.
I'm creating a a clipping path on a photo to place in ID -- I'm knocking out the background and there are areas within the perimeter path that also need to be knocked out (imagine a path around the outside of the letter "O" and a path on the inside of the letter to make it open). I've done on other photos on this same project but for some reason, I can't make it work on this one.
What am I doing wrong? TIA

welcome to the might Photoshop bug since PS 6.0. here is a quick fix short of recreating the path from scratch:
grab your direct select tool (white arrow).
1] click you path in the path so you can see it around the object overlaying the pixels.
2] make sure you have nothing selected as far as points. hold option and click the interior path (the area you want to knock out). ok you should have that area of the path selected.
3] with the path selected, click your Pen tool. look at you tool bar with the path setting - this part of your path needed set to the last one one the far right OR the "exclude overlapping path area" setting.
a lot of times it randomly just occurs as i have seen it off and on for years. sometimes selecting the entire path with the interior paths and setting the whole thing to the far right setting helps as well. sometimes you need to only select area that needs knocked out.
