Known issues MOVING local folders to GMAIL (IMAP)

does anyone know if there are any known issues (such as you cannot move a folder and its subfolders) when moving mail from a ON MY MAC Local Folder up to GMAIL which i am accessing via IMAP?
i seem to be able to do this very easy with the right click option when mail is in an INBOX on IMAP but when i try and do this to get info from my MAC PRO into GMAIL (so i have access to it on all my devices) it seems to LEAVE a copy in the Local Folder on my mac and then sometimes the information does not seem to get all the way transferred so i have to go back in and grab the remaining (?) email and move it again or i am grabbing the duplicate email that is in two places and copying it over a second time.
basically, it seems like sometimes it moves it, sometimes it copies it (?) and sometimes it crashes out?
TIA for any help

oof. you are /really/ awesome.
so - how do i know whether i am copying or moving from Local Mail to GMail IMAP?
i mean, when i have a local folder or local folder with subfolders i am literally moving (like drag and dropping) either the parent folder or the subfolder (or when things get really hairy i am dragging and dropping the mail in the subfolders) from one folder in Local Mail ("On My Mac") to the GMail folder.
is this moving? copying?
it is uber confusing (which the right click functionality for mail in a /normal/ IMAP folder is not...)
you know what i mean? i mean, when i get in and have to manually move actual email when something crashes i don't really know if i am re-moving or re-copying mail that has already been transferred or if i am just moving mail that did not get transferred due to a crash.
ALSO, it seems like it /sometimes/ will - well, er, arg - i guess in most cases it is copying the mail since when i do this i am usually having to go back in and verify the emails NOT READ (for instance it will have a red 5 on it or a red 28 or whatever) and then i am doing a delete of the folders that were supposed to have been copied because i am guessing that if the numbers are the same in this instanc then everything has been moved.
BUT sometimes these numbers are not the same which is why i had to post and why things got really hairy over here...
THANKS

  • Is there a way to recover messages after they've been moved from local folders to an IMAP account, which deleted them after they were moved?

I was trying to get Thunderbird to access my Hotmail account through IMAP instead of POP, so I moved all my messages from the account to "Local Folders", then I removed the POP account and created the new IMAP one. After that I started to move messages into the IMAP account, but I ran into some trouble when the server wouldn't want to accept all the messages I was uploading and it would stop.
So, I decided to move everything from "Local Folders" into the IMAP account while Thunderbird was offline, once it finished, I went online and instead of uploading the newly found messages in my IMAP account to the server, it decided to delete the messages. I guess because the actual online account contained no files so it wanted to synchronise and make my offline folder to also contain no files.
In short, never try this. It's a disaster. And, I know I should've made a back up prior to trying this, it's just that Thunderbird is usually very reliable, it never occurred to me.
I still have the MBOX and MSF files, but even though they contain information, no extension can extract it.
Could anyone, please, help me out?

    Hi,
I had tried using that very same extension right after messing things up, but it hadn't worked because I deleted the original folders as well.
Then I tried doing a System Restore (luckily, Windows had decided to do an automatic one the night before), but still the missing emails weren't showing.
A while after that I saw your suggestion and it hit me that I had not tried it after doing the System Restore, so I tried it and all messages were flooding back just like magic.
Thank you very much for your help! I'm very happy right now.

  • Dragging local nested folders to Gmail IMAP fails after a while

When dragging and dropping a nested local folder to gmail IMAP, copying commences as expected.
However, after a while, it just stops and fails to replicate the folder structure and fails to copy messages.
Any thoughts on how to proceed? I don't really want to manually re-create the folder structure and manually copy messages as this will take too long!

  • Changed server name, lost all local folders

    Greetings,
Recently my hosting company migrated me to a new server. Thing is, not only is a new server, but also new name. This AM I figured I had to finally address the issue so I made what I've come to learn is a mistake - I went into Tools -> Account Settings and changed the name of the server from "A" to "B". Oops. The account is an IMAP account, and has been for years.
This probably wouldn't be a big deal, but at the same time, something very odd happened - all of my LOCAL folders disappeared. So figured ok, something screwy happened I'll just go find the files. Not that easy...
    - If I search my hard drive for the name of a folder that was in the local folders, the search turns up empty. The folders appear to just be gone. Checked recycling bin, nothing there.
    - I went into Thunderbird to see where local folders are kept. Easy enough: D:\xxxxx\Mail\Local Folders. Went looking there. Mostly empty. What IS there has 0kB. Considering I have (well... had?) about 15-20 years of email stored, this isn't likely.
    - I even scanned the drives with both Recuva and VirtualLabs Data Recovery. Both turned up nothing for the missing folders.
I tried looking through the support sites, and tried a few of the "obvious" solutions:
    - View has both "messages" and "threads" set to "all".
    - I've restored a pref.js file from a few days ago
So I'm stumped. Am I missing somewhere that I should be looking? Am I missing a solution?
    Version of Thunderbird is 31.6.0.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi Matt,
Thanks for the quick response. I agree that it would seem like two different issues, but... coincidence?
The server migration in question was supposed to be seamless. I believe the servers were mirrored for a time, and then the original server was shut down. This is supported by the fact that my mailboxes on the "B" server were all in tact, including the entire IMAP folder tree (about 20-30 sub folders within the inbox). Those folder did not disappear with the migration/server name change.
As for the "local folders"... I was/am very certain they were indeed local, but I tried to find some evidence. I was intermittently using Mailstore Home to run mail backups, and looking in there, I see all the missing folders, and they are indeed "local folders". Not IMAP subfolders.
    Thanks again!

  • Local Folders not updated?

Configuration: UCM and URM 10gR3 on a virtual machine running Windows XP.
I've installed the Folders component for URM, and as far as I can tell everything went smoothly. I am able to drag folders from my desktop into the Oracle WebDav directories viewable in Windows Explorer and I instantly see them in the URM web interface. I then setup a local folder and configured it in the admin area.... but I'm not seeing any syncing going on between the local folder and the virtual folder I have it assigned to.
As I understand it, when I move files into the virtual folder, it should show that file in the associated local folder as well. I've tried this several different ways, restarted the server, the machine, everything... but I can't seem to get any syncing between the two. Is there something I am overlooking in the configuration?
    Any tips on doing this?
    Thanks,
    Brian

Are you running the latest versions of everything?
I found a similar issue with Local Folders on 10g a while back (>12 mths)but I am pretty sure it was fixed.

  • Mail Setup - Gmail - Show All - Local Folders - IMAP - Yosemite - Am I set up properly?

    Hi All
I recently moved to Yosemite on a recently acquired rMBP - and after a little fun setting up Mail I seem to be settled in. However whilst experiencing some Mail / Gmail issues (now sorted) I read how other people are setup - and I am now wondering if my setup is incorrect or rather 'not how it should be done'. I access my email via my rMBP and an iPhone using IMAP. I am currently set up thus:
    1) I have three mailboxes / email addresses provided by Virgin Media - these are actually Gmail accounts
    2) I have a series of folders / sub folders 'On My Mac' which is where I move / store my emails once dealt with that I want to keep
    3) I have the 'Show All Mail' label set to hide in Gmail - and 'Show in IMAP' for this label is unchecked
    4) I have the mailbox behaviour in Mail set thus for all accounts:
I have found using this setup I have no problems with duplicate messages in Mail or the Gmail portal that others seem to have experienced - and when I move messages to 'On My Mac' folders - or delete them in Mail they disappear from the Gmail inbox and are moved to Gmail's Bin / Trash in Mail as desired. Gmail is also keeping all of my sent mail on their servers. This way I am using a fraction of my Gmail storage space - hence plenty of space to carry on like this for some years. I backup my email locally - including the inboxes and sent mail which I assume are safe anyway on Gmail's servers.
Is this a suitable setup - am I missing something by doing it this way?
    Many thanks

    Hi Eric
Thanks for looking over my setup and allaying my concerns
I had wondered about setting up folders (labels on Gmail) to take the place of my folders 'On My Mac'. However having three different email addresses - and some mail from each of those going into the same local folder - I thought this could end up in a mess - unless it's possible to share a 'label' across email accounts...
I have around 3Gb in local folders - so plenty of room if I wanted to do that. I suppose it would give me access to those folders on my iPhone if it worked properly - and provide another backup online.
I guess I just wanted to keep it simple as I have seen plenty of people fighting to get Gmail / Mail talking properly.
    Thanks again.

  • Z10 Issues with GMail Imap / Microsoft Active Exchange

    Hi,
I have seen lots of posts coming in on here and on crackberry.com about issues with emails. But I couldn't find any posts on the issues that I am having.
Just purchased a new Z10, coming from a BB 9900.
I would like to setup my gmail account on here but I am getting unexpected results. I have tried many different ways, gmail, imap, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and pop3.
What I find different from everyone is that I have a bunch of filters set up that auto direct some emails away from the inbox and into labels (folders).  So I know things have changed from the 9900, but the way it happened on there was that a new email would show up in my unified inbox on the BB whether or not it was filtered. Then after reading it, I would have to search for it because it wouldn't actually be stored in the inbox. Which I was fine with.
We'll have my email description setup as "Personal"
    Issues that I am having:
    Imap set up:
    - When I go from hub to my "Personal" box, it is a duplicate of my inbox. Looks the same as my inbox in mail.google.com, all nice and dandy.
    - Emails that go directly to my inbox show up nice and quick and give me a notification in the hub etc.. that an email has shown up.
    - Now when I receive an email that is being filtered. Gmail.com has it right away in my labels. So I know it's there. I can wait the 15/30 minutes that is setup for the sync, but I never get a notification of the email. If I go to the folder (by clicking on the drop down by the email description) then it shows up there with the yellow mail saying that it's a new mail. But there still isn't a notification saying I got a new email.
    So that's IMAP.
    M$ Exchange ActiveSync set up:
    - Initially, going straight to my personal box from the hub makes it look somewhat like what it did on my 9900. Inbox, and filtered messages all showing up in the default view.
    - If I receive a NEW (not part of a conversation) message that is/is not being filtered it shows up in this default view and I get a notification in the hub.
    - Once I read that email, then go back to the default view. IF it is a msg in the inbox, it disappears and the only way I can find it is by going to the drop down then to the Inbox. But this seems to be random, sometimes it stays, sometimes it disappears. Also, if it gets moved directly to the inbox and I get a reply to that message I don't get a notification for a new email.
    - If the email is a filtered email, it stays in the default view.
    - Now if I get an email that is part of a conversation to a filtered email, I don't get a notification that I have a new email, but if I go to it from the hub, it's marked as a yellow mail symbol stating that it is new. Read that email, it stays in the default view.
    So that's M$ EAS.
    Email:
*******@gmail.com, so not a Paid Account or anything, just a regular gmail account. IMAP settings turned on and setup.
    Hub Settings:
    Display Style: conversation
    Display order: name, subject
    display message count: on
    display new message indicator: on
    show filed messages: on
    show sent messages: off
    delete message confirmation: off.
Oh when I tried the gmail setup I believe it just used the same settings as IMAP. Pop3. just a disaster, all my messages were brought in (sent/receieved) marked as unread. Won't even bother with Pop3.
I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong with my setups, or that this is the way it is designed. I really don't want to have to check each folder everytime to see if have a new email. And I don't want to change my gmail setup so that nothing is filtered. I thought I had solved it with the M$ EAS but with the random moving of messages to other directories, it's a no go aswell.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for me it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Curtis

    Hi,
I'm the author of the article linked to above.  I appreciate the reference, but I don't think my article solves the OP's particular issues.  To date, I've not found a way to enable notifications on new content in subfolders.  I think this is a limitation in the BlackBerry 10 email client.
Since the paint is still wet on this OS, we can expect to see some improvements in forthcoming service releases.  CalDAV for example is known by BlackBerry to be broken with Google Calendar.  No ETA to fix at present.  BlackBerry will have to address that, and soon.
I don't yet know if OS 10 is going to gain the traction the BlackBerry needs to survive in the market.  If it does, I suspect we will see some third party email apps appearing in BlackBerry World in the future, with enhanced IMAP functionality.  There's some precedent for this and we've seen similar happen on other mobile platforms.  In any case, until BlackBerry does some email client rewrting, or an enterprising developer plugs the gap, I think the OP's niggle is going to remain.  At the time of writing, BlackBerry World is showing a White Screen of Death.  Figures.
One thing I'd urge all Google Apps users (especially of free accounts) to bear in mind is that Google will be pulling the plug on ActiveSync in the very near future.  I've blogged about this in more detail, in a followup to my previously-mentioned post: Gmail + Google Apps on the BlackBerry Z10.
I hope this clarifies the position, even though the reality is less than satisfactory.

  • Can I get Thunderbird to delete from an LDAP inbox when moving mail to local folders?

I have 3 mail accounts that I previously accessed with POP3 on Outlook. Thunderbird set these up with LDAP (which, in many ways, is more convinient). I like to keep the inbox on the mail server fairly clean so I move anything I want to keep to my local folders. If I do this then Thunderbird no longer sees it in the LDAP inbox but it is still there and visible to other readers (i.e. my phone). The only way I have found is to copy to my local folders and then delete from LDAP server as two separate operations. Is there a simpler way that I can configure Thunderbird to do this in one operation?

When you say LDAP, you actually mean IMAP.
After moving the email into Local Folders, has the Thunderbird Inbox resynchronised with the server to update the server?
    Did you try this.
Synchronise Inbox folder for offline use.
Then in offline mode, move email into Local folders so it is no longer in the Inbox, then go back into online mode and the Thunderbird Inbox should resynch with the server to update it.

  • Z10 not showing all emails in folders (imap + gmail imap)

    Hi
My Z10 is not showing all the emails in my imap email accounts (inc gmail).  e.g. my inbox has 20 messages but the z10 only shows 10 of them.  Same issue applies on some other folders.
Issue also applies on gmail imap account but does not seem to occur on my exchange account.
It also only appears to be affecting emails that are approx 1 or 2 weeks ago in this month.
    Please help!

    Hello,
Please check carefully your settings for your GMail account, especially the portion concerning "Sync Timeframe" (if visible to you, it depends on the integration method).
Check carefully also how these are labeled on GMail...Gmail technically uses labels and not folders, and the BB must interpret the labels into folders. So if a stray label is applied to these items, then that may be why they are suppressed from view.
You can also try removing and re-integrating the problem account.
You can also try ringing up your mobile service provider for formal support and potential escalation to BlackBerry for enhanced formal support.
    Good luck!

  • Help with Gmail IMAP in Mac Mall: Folders transfered from Exchange server

I'm in the process of migrating a mail account from an Exchange server over to Goggle Apps. I've transfered all old mail and the existing Exchange folder structure over to Gmail. Gmail doesn't recognize folders but instead reads the folder structure as Labels. When the account is subsequently imported into Mac Mail it appears that the orgiginal Exhange folder structure holds on the other side, which was my intent. These folders appear in Mail within the Mailboxes>Inbox.
However, there doesn't seem to be a way to insert a new folder into the Gmail IMAP account within the Inbox folder structure. I have successfully created a new "Mailbox" in Mail, but this appears to get inserted into the local version of the Gmail account much lower on the left hand side bar. It seems that I can pick up the "Mailbox" once it is created and move it up into the intended location, but only as a sub-folder. I am not able to promote it to the desired heirarchy or intended location.
Does anyone have any history with this or possibly a fix or suggestion?
    Thanks!

My recollection is that unless you are a paid Hotmail account member, you cannot use Mail. Do a search within the discussion group, as I am not an expert, but I recall not getting Hotmail for that very reason.
    Perhaps give gmail a try.....
That said....I still need some help with my posting! So please and thank you.

  • How to download all emails from IMAP servers to a single inbox in local folders

I would like to have all incoming emails from my account(s) at IMAP server(s) (not POP) to be always downloaded to a single INBOX in my Local folders (all emails to be stored on my computer permanently); Thunderbird 31.5.0. Thanks, Peter.

    1. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/send-filter/?src=search
    2. you will need a separate filter for each destinations folder. It is also better to use email address contains that email address. Less precise.
    3. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/attachmentextractor/?src=search but it appears it is buggy.

  • Gmail IMAP issue

When I delete email messages on my iPhone, the messages are moved from the Gmail server inbox and archived. However, I want the messages to stay in my inbox on my Gmail server.
My iPhone is configured for Gmail IMAP. I have tried every option for the Deleted Mailbox behavior, but my messages are always moved out of my inbox on my Gmail server. Can anyone suggest any settings that will allow my messages to stay in my server inbox when I delete them on my iPhone?

You can use Gmail IMAP with your iphone.

  • Messages from local folders get corrupted when the folders are moved to different location

    Hello,
I have several local folders with thousand of messages. Normally I store them on a mapped network driver so my local folder configuration in Thunderbird is like Z:\emails.
I needed to move the local folders to my computer and what I did was copy the whole folder "emails" from my network location and reconfigured Thunderbird local folder config to C:\emails - basically same as before but on a local drive. Restarted Thunderbird as requested by the application.
(I should mention that I've done this exact procedure before(but not recently) and it was working fine. )
Anyway, when I did that I could see all my local folders however when I attempted to access any of the folders Thunderbird would perform "rebuilding index..." automatically which ends up in that all the messages in my local folder are marked as "unread" and they have no header - no subject or sender or people in cc, no attachments. If I attempt to see any of the emails I can see the content of the email(the written part anyway) and instead of the normal header I see the technical information of the header that looks like:
    X-Mozilla-Status: 0001
    X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000
    X-Mozilla-Keys:
followed by "Send - (for example "muder [(unix socket)])", "Received", "Scanned" "Certificate", authentication and other technical information.
Currently running Thunderbird 31.0 on W7 Pro x64. As I already mentioned I've done the above procedure several times before but not recently and since then I've updated Thinderbird at least a couple of times so I assume the problem is caused by something in the newer versions.
    Any help would be appreciated.

wdseml files are provided for the sole purpose of allowing windows limited search to search mail. They form no part of your mail store in Thunderbird really and constitute a total waste of disk space unless you are in the practice of using windows search to search your mail. Something I simply do not understand as Thunderbirds search is superior in my view.

  • Gmail IMAP - no local trash?

I followed Gmail's recommended IMAP settings, as outlined here:
    http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=78892#
Now I have no Trash in Apple Mail. Any thoughts? Is this normal?

Turns out I was a victim of my own [tight] security. I had a SOCKS proxy enabled on my Ethernet for when I take this laptop on the road...I used it to connect securely to my server back home. Obviously at home my SOCKS proxy was not connecting from within my private network. As soon as I removed the SOCKS proxy, voilá! GMAIL IMAP works perfectly over the USB Ethernet adapter once again.
I hope this serves as a reminder to thoroughly check your network settings before driving yourself mad!
    Cheers!
