Kodak Zi8 import

I have a new Kodak Zi8 digital video camera which records video to a SDHC card. I have attempted to transfer the video from the card to my computer using a IOGEAR universal memory card reader/writer, model GFR 280. However I get no image on the desktop with the card inserted in the reader. (I do get an image when a SanDisk compact flash card from my Minolta digital camera is utilized.)
I have opened iMovie and selected import to see if the application will recognize the video on the SDHC card, but that does not work.
Am I missing some software or is there a special reader for SDHC cards?
Thanks for your help.

must be a file encoding issue ... either the 720 encode is corrupt, or as reported in the error message, its an unsupported encoding
what is the codec? what is the container format? how was it created? what was the original source?
EDIT: Whoops! Sorry Rich, I can't see the wood for the trees ... just noted that the subject line clearly tells the provenance of the clip (the Kodak Zi8)
What happens if you import the 720p60 clip into iMovie ... does that work?
Try changing the existing file extension to ".MOV" and then reimport to FCP.
Whatever works or doesn't work, you have to bear in mind that the raw source format (H264) is not a natively supported edit format in FCP so a transcode to a better supported intermediate format for editing is a good idea. For that, consider using the excelent (and free) MPEG Streamclip application which you can grab from http://www.squared5.com/

  • How to import from Kodak zi8

I have a new Kodak zi8 video camera (flip variety). When I plug it into my computer to download, iphoto recognizes the camera, but imovie does not. Do I have to download into iphoto first, or am I missing something? I thought imovie would recognize the video camera. I am a novice in the movie department. Thanks for your help!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
It's important to select a sequence preset that match your camcorder format, like DV PAL. Use easy setup menu to select the right preset.

  • How do I get iphoto to load instead of imovie when I plug in my Kodak Zi8?

When I first got my Kodak Zi8 I did not like the way it loaded iPhoto and imported my video into it when I plugged it into my Macbook, so I switched it to loading iMovie instead. However, having read up on it, I would prefer it to go back to the default of loading iPhoto and importing my videos directly into that program. I can't seem to figure out how to do this. Any suggestions? This should be easy, but when I plug in my Zi8 it mounts a hard drive but doesn't associate a program with it.

hello, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware on your pc.
*please go to the firefox ''menu [[Image:New Fx Menu]] > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc).
*also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there.
*finally, run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

  • Kodak Zi8 doesn't connect to iPad2 camera connection kit

    Hi,
i have a Kodak Zi8 video camera and want to copy my movies to a iPad2 using the camera connection kit using buildin USB Kable of the Zi8.
Unfortunately the iPad shows a messagebox "Dieses Zubehör benötigt zu viel Strom" (accessory need to much current !?).
How can i connect my video camera to the iPad2?
    Yours Rüdiger

You won't be able to because the video camera requires more power than the iPad can provide.
To transfer your videos to the iPad, you might try connecting the video camera to your computer and importing them into iTunes.  From there, you can select the videos and create iPad-compatible versions (under the "Advanced" menu, select "Create IPAD Version".  Then transfer the iPad version of the video to your iPad by syncing.

  • Kodak Zi8

iMovie doesn't seem to recognize the Kodak Zi8 camera. Anyone have any idea how best to get iMovie to recognize the Kodak Zi8 and import the videos?

    I second the Confirmed.
Just got a Zi8. I use the internal USB and connect it to my MBP. Two mounts are established in Finder: "no name" (the SD card, which doesn't have a name) and "arcsoft sw" the internal software for Windows only (??).
In iMovie, go to File - Import Movies, and select the name of your SD card mount (for me, it's "no name"). Then, drill down into the DCIM folder and find the .MOV files, and begin importing.

  • Rendering problme with Kodak Zi8 clip into FCE

Greetings: I am trying to import a Kodak Zi8 clip into Final Cut Express. I run it through Mpeg Streamclip to transcode it from h264 into Apple Intermediate Codec and set the frame size in Streamclip to 848X480. I open a sequence in FCE, making sure the Sequence Preset is set to Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50. But when I try to lay the clip into the timeline I get the red line of doom that the video is unrendered (although the audio is not). What am I doing wrong? I have also set the Easy Set-up to Apple Intermediate Codec.

Open the file in the QT player and report exactly what it says in the movie inspector. There is no such video frame size.
If that is the size, then it's standard definition. You need to convert to QuickTime using the DV PAL codec (if you're in Europe) at 720x576. In the Options box set it to 16:9 because it sounds like it's supposed to be anamorphic.

  • Does Final Cut Express 4 recognize Kodak Zi8...?

Does anyone know if FCE4 imports files from the Kodak Zi8? I was going to buy the upgrade from FCE2. I don't see it on the list> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2948
    Thanks for any help.

    Thanks for your help Tom.
What I'm doing is recording acoustic guitar into Pro Tools and video taping at the same time with the Kodak in 720p. I've been importing the video into iMovie, then dropping the audio file on top of that. The trick is getting the audio synced up just right. I'm fairly happy with the results but as you know, it is a tedious process in iMovie.
Was wondering if I should upgrade FCE to use on my newer Macs (as my version of FCE2 on my old G4 doesn't even recognize the .mov file) Would MPEG Streamclip get those files into FCE2?
Bottom line... should I go out and grab FCE4? If I can get those .mov files from the Kodak to work, it certainly would be an easier process... no?

  • Compressor + Kodak Zi8 files = pinwheel and slowdown

As soon as I drop Kodak Zi8 files into Compressor, I get the pinwheel and all kinds of other slowdowns. Even a 1-minute clip does this. Has anyone else seen this with these files? I would love to use different cameras, but the campaign I am working on is limited to these cameras.
Temp solution: I just use MPEGStreamClip to transcode those files to ProRes 422. For some reason MPGSC does not complain at all with the Kodak files.
    Any ideas?
Other video files do not do this
I have deleted pref files, uninstalled, reinstalled, etc
    Compressor 3.5.1

Last night I created four short videos using each format available on
    the Zi8:
    1080 p at 30 fps
    720 p at 60 fps
    720 p at 30 fps
    and WVGA
I uploaded them to vista computer described in my earlier texts and found something a bit surprising (or maybe not).
I tried to view them several ways: the mediaimpressions Arcsoft app that came with the camera; the most current version of Quicktime; and PE4.
All of them suffered a bit of choppiness, pixelation, stuttering, etc. when I tried to view them in the above methods.
    Strange...
Would this indicate something wrong with the drivers, codecs, etc. on the computer?  or the way the videocamera stored and saved the movies?
I have chatted with the kodak support and need to continue along this today.
I see a similar post with the kodak videocamera (Zi6, another pocket videocamera): http://forums.adobe.com/message/1990668#1990668
From what I read, it appears that one may need to convert the movies to another format (AVI for example).

  • Kodak Zi8 pocket videocamera

I recently purchased a Kodak Zi8 pocket videocamera.  The videocamera can record in 1080 p; 720p at 60fps; 720p; and WVGA.  I was trying the camcorder out and took some short videos at 1080p.  The videocamera comes with some basic software to create movies from the videos (ArcSoft Media Impression for Kodak).  However, I wanted to use Adobe Premiere Elements instead.  My version of Adobe Premiere Elements is an older version, I have version 4 running on a Velocity Micro Vista Ultimate 32 computer with 2 GB RAM.
I first copied the Kodak MOV files onto a folder and then used PE to open these movies.  I created a new project using the HD Video preset.
When I loaded the movies into the project and viewed them, they were extremely choppy and pixelated.  I also received a message about the memory allocation was low and that I should proceed with caution.
I am not sure if this choppiness and pixelation is a function of the MOV files being read by PE4 (MOV format) or something with the memory allocation?
I know that this is a fairly old version of PE but I didn't want to buy the current version unless I have to!

  • Kodak Zi8 into FCP

Anyone used a Kodak Zi8 and transferred into FCP?
    Need any converters?
Or is log and transfer easy. Recording at 1080p
    Jayblum

    Meg,
What I discovered is that, for my purposes, the Zi8 goes into iMovie with not a hitch.
So for now I'll use it that way.
And yes it is a great little camera. Looses quality when zoom all the way in but overall does the job.
    Thanks for the help.

So it is cutting off the end at 59 minutes?  How large is the file that is being exported?  You may be running up against a file size limitation.

  • CHOPPY video playback of videos taken with Kodak Zi8 using Quicktime 7

I've tried everything I possibly could (hence joining this forum), but for some reason, my laptop OR desktop computers will NOT play the videos taken with my Kodak Zi8 portable HD video camera, without the videos being dark, and EXTREMELY CHOPPY, using the Quicktime 7 player! Both computers are very capable of playing HD video (720P), so that's not the problem. I can use VLC Media Player, or the media player that came with the Kodak Zi8 (Media Impression media player), and the playback is extremely smooth & bright, even at FULL SCREEN. I thought it had something to do with "h.264", but Apple says that codec is part of QT7. Any suggestions? I greatly appreciate it! Thanks! : )

I'm having the exact same problem. I have the Kodak Zi8 as it outputs a .MOV file and the result in Quicktime is choppy/stuttery playback. The Fip UltraHD camera does the same thing. I would really like to use quicktime rather than the Impressions player, but for now that's all we can use, and it looks great I just wish Quicktime would look this good. Hopefully we will get a helpul reply on this issue.

  • Editing with Kodak zi8 footage for air - VGA setting

Hello. I shot with a Kodak zi8. I used the VGA setting. I couldn't use the HD settings b/c my Mac is old and doesn't handle HD. My FCP is 5.0.4.
So now I am editing in FCP. The Kodak .MOV files are:
    H.264 Decoder, 848 x 480, Millions
AAC, Stereo, 48.000 kHz, FPS 29.97
    My FCP sequence is:
    720x480 NTSC DV 3:2
    Pixel Aspect Ratio NTSC-CCIR 601 DV 720x480
    Anamorphic 16:9 is checked
    Field Dominance Lower
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    QuickTime Video Settings
    Compressor DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
When I bring in the clips the red render line appears. Am I working in the correct sequence settings?
Also, is this level of quality too low for local (no high-brow nationally-aired spot here) broadcast? I think it's going to be passable but would like to hear your opinion.
    Thanks very much.

You can't really edit H264 in Final Cut Pro.
Use Compressor or MPEG Streamclip to convert your files to an editable codec that FCP works with natively. A list of those codecs can be found under the Easy Setup menu.
