Kopete and Jabber Accounts: GTalk and Facebook Chat

Hi all,
Recently reinstalled KDE and I'm having this annoyance which I'm sure it's easy to solve but I'm not figuring out.
To have both Gmail and Facebook accounts, one must set them up as Jabber accounts.
But then Kopete automatically 'groups' these contacts and doesn't sort them correctly.
If one contact has a gmail and a facebook account - and I have several who do, then they appear as one contact only in the Facebook group.
We must right click and choose by which protocol we wish to start a conversation with such contact: Gmail or Facebook.
Empathy correctly sorts and doesn't mix up the contacts. Contacts under the "Facebook" group are the ones active in facebook. Contacts under Gmail, are the ones active in Google Talk, etc.
How can I solve this?

I'm having the same problem. Have anyone been able to find a satisfactory solution? The bug does not seem to have been fixed (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=224760) and even if I manually split each meta contact they merge again. Annoying behaviour.

Gmail drop-down menus (Move to, Labels) and emails and Facebook chat will not open.

I am unable to open emails in standard Gmail. Emails can be opened after switching to the basic html version. I am also unable to use the drop-down menus, such as "Move to" or "Labels." The button turns gray, but the options do not appear.
Facebook chat is giving me a similar problem. When I click "Chat" in the bottom left, it acts as though it's trying to load but does not open up to reveal friends.

Scans for viruses and spyware have yielded no results. I use AVG, Spybot, and Malwarebytes. The Gmail emails and menus will open in IE8.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

Safari and Facebook chat history logs?

Empathy and Facebook chat

Hello, I can't connect to facebook chat with Empathy. Pidgin works just fine, but I need Empathy for the built-in gnome messenger. Is there a solution for this?

I noticed Facebook changed Chat a few days ago.
I use Facebook Chat with Pidgin. Recently, for about a week I was getting errors while chatting with people, and then a few days ago the service suddenly disconnected. When I reconnected to Facebook Chat, my friend list was rearranged, so I assume Facebook has been making changes to Chat.

Just got a Nokia E-51 and have been attempting to use Facebook chat on it. I know the mobile version does not support chat so i have been accessing the full site which should surely support it?
Can any one help?

Imessage and facebook chat keep transplanting messages

my facebook chat, and more recently my imessage app, have started pulling messages from earlier in the conversation and inserting them into current conversation. not only is it annoying, but it also makes conversations incredibly confusing since there is no indication of whether the new message is a transplant or an actual message. i have a 4th gen ipod touch with the most recent version of ios 6 installed.

As required:
Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Go to Settings>Messages>Send and Receive and sing out of Messages and sign back in. Note all old messages on the iPod will be deleted.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:

Slow email and Facebook chat Lumia 820 'optus'

As the title says, if i actually open the messaging app facebook seems to update right away, however if i just have to phone sitting there on the home screen and locked... facebook messages seem to delay by about 15-20 minuets
Same for the email at times
as for email it is already marked as "as they arrive" for download content

Sorry, I forgot to state that the phone is mainly connected to WiFi, Tonight I got a message a hour and twenty minuets late..... totally not acceptable..... Windows eight for pc own messaging app is just as **bleep** with this lag...

Facebook chat and adium

hi,
I have a question about adium facebook chat and facebook chat I can log out of adium fine but my facebook stays logged in on the web page on chat when I want it to log out when I do in adium. Is there anything I should be doing to make this log out on the facebook chat too? Which is what Id thought it'd do. Thanks hope someone can help. I hope this is the right place to post. Id really like to be able to use adium for my facebook but I need it to work propley.

You may have clicked "Keep Me Logged In" ... you can change that.
You can reset this feature by choosing "Logout" from the Account drop-down menu located in the top right corner of any Facebook page.

Video chat & Screensharing unavailable with Jabber account in Messages

Dear all,
I use Messages to connect to 2 Jabber services: Google Chat and Facebook Chat.
I've read that Messages can deliver Screensharing and Video Chatting services for Jabber account. However I've never seen this option next to friends' name in Buddy Lists (seperate list). And whenever I select a friend's id (in GChat or FChat), there's always one available action possible: start conversation, and the buttons for starting video chat or screensharing (at the bottom of the buddy list window) are always greyed-out.
After much reading on this site I've still not found out the answer. Can someone helps me on this point ?

A Jabber specific App or a Web Browser with the Google Video Chat Plug-in can do Video chats using the Jingle Protocol that Jabber apps use.
At one time Google seemed to use Flash to do Video chats and there have been reported conflicts with having both Flash and the Google Plug-in active for your web browser.
To state this another way.
Jabber apps tend to be a collection of modules. One of these is the Jingle Library for Video Chats.
Google include this Protocol in their Video Plug-in for web Browsers.
I don't have a Facebook account and cannot tell you if Facebook uses Flash or a similar plug-in for web browsers.
iChat and Messages use a protocol called Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) to make Audio Only, Video and Screen Sharing Connections.
SIP is used with Voice over IP apps (VoIP) such as software phones that can use SIP.
Skype also uses SIP but is not compatible with iChat or Messages
What this means is that iChat/Messages will Video or Audio Only or Screen Share to other Macs using iChat or Messages apps irrespective if they are using Jabber based or AIM based names/IDs
What it will not do is connect to PCs using the standalone App called GoogleTalk or to Web Browser logins (on any Platform) of Jabber apps on any platform.
So a Login to Google Chat via a Login to Google Mail's Web Page or iGoogle with the Video Plug-in is likely to show you your Buddies available for Video chats where as iChat to Messages will not.
As Facebook is also a Jabber server the same things will apply.

I just hooked up facebook chat to imessage, and while Jabber says I am logged in, nothing from facebook is coming up. I use mountain lion 10.8.5 on a macbook pro.

I just added my Facebook chat account to iMessage. When I am logged in to iMessage, it looks like I am also logged in with Jabber, but nothing from Facebook is coming up (I use Mountain Lion 10.8.5 on a 2011 macbook pro)
I have already:
unchecked "use kerberos fv5 for authentification" and "use SSL"
checked "automatically find server and port"
restarted both the application itself, and then my whole computer.
Any help would be appreciated

Although I don't have a Facebook I d have 3 other Jabber accounts logged in.
One is from Google and the others are from other Jabber servers.
My Google settings look like this,
Most Jabber server need SSL and the App will automatically make this port 5223.
However Google will let you change theirs to use port 443.
One of the other 2 is using "Automatically find Port and Server" and is using port 5222 and No SSL.
Whilst most will use SSL and port 5223 it is not true for every Jabber server.
I can never remember if the Facebook chat ID is @facebook.chat.com or @chat.facebook.com (I suspect the second)
You are using the Chat ID and not your regular Facebook ID ?

I would check the set up page but if that does not work I would work through all the settings possibles with the SSL, Ports, warn on insecure passwords etc.

What is my Jabber account and why has it kicked me out?

I don't know what Jabber does but from what I have seen I need to be logged in to it to have iMessage work correctly.
I have recently started having problems with Messages (amongst many other things!) on my Mac mini (late 2012) in particular, sharing photos via iPhoto, even more particular to more than one person at a time.
At the same time I have noticed that Jabber is off line, if I try to log in I get asked to insert a pass word, I don't remember ever setting up an account with a password, but if I did it will have only been the same as any other account I have, however when I put the password in, the box disappears and immediately reappears and I remain off line.

If you add other accounts to the Messages app after activating the iMessages account then by default (if you don't name them in the Description box) that take the name of the Service they join up to the point you have a second AIM valid Name or a second Jabber valid Name.
In My List my accounts are Named in the Description Box
AIM is Aol Instant Messenger so the Add Screen Shows AOL. You will see in the right hand pane under Account Info it says it is AIM.
You will see in the list several others are also AIM Valid accounts.
If you don't Name them yourself then the account info is used (like the iMessages one) when you have two or more for that service.
Google and Facebook run Jabber servers.
They are unlikely to work with a Hotmail ID (which is MSN and not Native to the Messages app).
You seem to have Added an Account as Google and tried to use a Hotmail ID
As the Google Servers only allow IDs that end @Googlemail.com or @gmail.com it will not work and you will be "Off Line".
The ID is "accepted" when you type it in as it conforms to an email Address.
Japib has their Facebook account called chat.facebook.com which happens to be the server name and that it how it appears in the list on the left in their Pic. It will also be in the Window Menu like that.

IChat 5 error «disconnected unexpectedly» GTalk and Facebook

Hello.
I'm using iChat 5 (MacOS 10.6.8) with GTalk and Facebook accounts.
I've error: «iChat lost the connection to the Jabber accoun *** . Disconnected unexpectedly.» every ~10 min. after success connect.
What's wrong?

Do you have an AM Login of any sort ?
Do you have your Bonjour Account Active ?
If other accounts/Buddy Lists also go Off line then it will be something local to you such as Wifi drops or Internet issues.
I am not seeing an issue with my Google Account or any of my Jabber IDs at the time I am posting.
If it was a Server issue it seems to have passed.

Whenever I try to connect to my Facebook Jabber account on Messages it gives me this

There appears to be something wrong with the link you posted to the pic.
Go to Facebook and you account settings there.
In Security I believe it is there is an option to allow Other browsers (or non regular browsers) to access the account.
Basically they know the IP addresses of the devices you are logging on from.
Their presumption is it will be a Browser.
I guess they can also tell with Mobile devices and expect them to hop around IP addresses.
It appears if you are a fixed location they presume you will use a regular browser and not consider other apps.
The setting should get around this.
I don't have Facebook so I am relying on memory about other posts as to what it is called.

Using Firefox to access facebook chat Button or online friiend chat button generates a Black screen with CANNOT LOAD IMAGES and no chat window opens.

This does not happen in other browsers and it happens on a variety of computers I have access to and would seem to be a common problem but I can find no identical cases in my searches of
Firefox , Facebook or windows help or Google search. My home machine is only a P2 with WINXPCORP but works fine and I have done all updates but still have this continuing problem every time I try to use Firefox

My email account and facebook accounts have been compromised, how can I know if I have malware of a keylogger?

About 2 weeks ago my Yahoo email account and AIM email account had been compromised and the passwords changed. From what I was told/researched at the time, changing my passwords to more secure passwords was the best option.
I changed my passwords for the two accounts that had been compromised, and I even when as far to change my passwords for everything that I used frequently, and accounts that were tied to the email accounts, facebook, twitter, etc.
This morning at 12:28am (EST) my facebook was accessed by somebody other than me and my password changed. When I noticed this my first thought was to check to see if my email that I log in with was compromised. It had also underwent a password change.
Obviously the next thing I did was to try and change my passwords.
I had my AIM email send a change password form to my Yahoo email (which hasn't been tampered with this time) I followed the form and input a new password. After that, it brought me to a page where I was to enter the new password and sign in. When I input the new password it yet again said, "incorrect password or username". After I tried the new password a few more times it finally brought me to a screen saying basically that my account was locked due to suspicious activity and I still haven't been able to try and log in again.
I also can't access my Facebook account at all. I obviously can't send a new password to my email because I can't access it. Whenever I tried to send my info to an alternate email it wants me to answer a security question, and for some reason the answer I enter, which should be the correct answer, is said to be false.
Facebook offers another option of recovering your account by getting 3 friends to be sent security codes, I tried this method but it would never let me complete it because I locked my account. I locked my account after figuring out it was being tampered with. Whenever I try to get the security codes sent to 3 friends it ultimately leads me to a screen saying my account is locked and I need to sign in to unlock it, which is some major bull considering if I could log in I wouldn't need to be going through the process to begin with!
One friend has told me somebody maybe using some file to track my moves, a keytracker?
Is there anyway I can confirm that?
How can I get rid of it, how can I protect myself?
I've been using the internet almost daily since I was 8 years old, I'm now 20, this is the first of these kinds of problems I've ever had.
Protip: I run Mac OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

Whatever is going on, it's extremely unlikely to be malware of any kind. See my Mac Malware Guide.
As to what is going on, it's hard to say, but if someone is targeting you specifically, it's not that hard for an experienced person to do. It may not even require actual hacking... see the story of Matt Honan's hacking:

In short, his attacker managed to get access to Mr. Honan's Amazon account, which gave him access to the last 4 digits of Mr. Honan's credit card that was on file. That credit card was also on file with Apple, and those 4 digits were used to give him access to Mr. Honan's Apple ID. And from there all went to h***. No hacking required, just talking to folks on the phone and convincing them to do what the hacker wanted.
In addition, note that some kinds of accounts provide you with a way to give access to another person. For example, GMail provides a way to add someone else's account, giving them access to your e-mail. Hackers have been known to use such features to leave themselves hidden back doors, so they can keep getting in after you have changed the password. I don't know whether AIM or Yahoo have such features, but it's possible.
Finally, note that there are always possible issues with weaknesses in the servers. For example, right now, someone's selling an exploit kit for Yahoo mail. I don't know whether the vulnerability it relies on has been patched or not, but if it hasn't been, your attacker may be using that method to get access.
In any case, you need to address these issues with AIM, Yahoo and Facebook.
