Korean characters appear as boxes

Hi, recently I re-installed Windows 7 due to technical issues. Until now, I have been able to read Korean on Firefox, but for some reason, now Korean characters show up as boxes. I've gone through other forums and follows all the instructions dealing with Character Encoding, but nothing seems to work. The funny thing is Korean seems to work in all other browsers, but I really prefer Firefox over the others :P Also, I've re-installed Windows several times on other computers, but this is the first time I've faced this problem. Help would be much appreciated, thank you!
Also, I've attached some screenshots in case they help.

Does this only happen with Korean pages?
This is likely a problem with the font that is used on the Google website.
You can right-click that field and click Inspect Element to open the inspector and click the font tab in the right pane to see which font is used.
You can try different default fonts and temporarily disable website fonts to test the selected default font.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced
*[ ] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"
You can do a font test to see if you can identify corrupted font(s).

• Unicode characters appear as (boxes) in AIR for IOS

I am developing an application for iPhone and it has an input Text box. (Placed on stage from flash CS6). In the Desktop emulator everything works fine. But, on the actual phone, everything I type appears as . But surprisingly, when I am inputting the text, (i.e. the textbox is in edit mode) the characters are displayed correctly. But as soon as I leave the box it appears as . Is there someway I can display the text the same way it is displayed during the edit mode?
I am trying to input Devanagari देवनागरी characters.
P.S. I did some research on this and found that, if I specify the font for the textbox = "DevanagariSangamMN" then there is some improvement.
I say improvement becasue althought the boxes are replaced by actual characters , they aren't correctly formated.
For e.g. during edit mode the text appears as this: कार्यकर्ता
But as soon as I leave the textbox it appears as this: कार्यकर्ता (I typed this here by adding special unicode characters ZWNJ so that characters won't join)
Anyway, I don't like the idea of having to specify font names? What If some user would like to input chinese, how would I know what chinese font to use?
Isn't there some way to let IOS handle things, (just like how it handles things when I am inputing text).
Thanks.

Thanks to everyone who replied.
The conclusiver answer is that there are only 2 ways to display H264 video in AIR for IOS
(more info here http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/net/NetStream.htm l#play%28%29)
1. Progressive download
2. HLS format (slight caveat, in my tests at least, OSMF 1.6.1 does'nt handle this, but if you use the NetStream directly with StageVideo enabled it works)

• Korean characters in my iphone

For some reason when I reset my iphone Korean characters appear when I specified that Im in the US and wanted english. They only come out in the itunes and apps icons. Does anyone know how to get rid of them cause I don't speak and understand Korean. Truly appreciated it.

Hello joeincal,
While your phone may be set for a U.S. locale, it may be that the language has somehow been set to Korean.

• Non-Roman Characters (Korean/Japanese/Chinese) appearing as boxes

Hey,
I've had this problem before, but it has seemed to fix itself in the past. But ever since the release of iTunes 9, I've been having a constant problem with any Kanji, Kana, or Hangul appearing in my library for the program. Instead of appearing as the foreign song title, the names only appear as squares or little boxes.
When I load the songs to my iPod, the problem does not seem to persist there. Doing a lot of research, I feel that this is a problem having to do with unicode. I know for the fact that my computer is capable of reading Korean/Japanese, since it works in other programs as Office 2007, and even Windows Media Player.
On another note, right clicking these problematic songs while browsing my library will bring up "Play 'suchandsuchsong'" in the right characterization. These songs show up normal in windows explorer. However, Right clicking it in while in windows explorer and selecting properties will give me the little boxes as well.
I hope I've given enough information to explain my problem, and I will be very grateful for a solution to this problem which many people seem to have.
Edit: Additionally, solutions like changing the ID3 tags have not helped, but this might be because they were rather ambiguous in their directions (such as the solution given by iTunes in the iTunes Help).

I didn't have the problem of showing boxes, but I had a similar problem of the korean characters showing in symbols. To fix, I (1) right clicked on the song. (2) Chose Convert ID3 Tags. (3) Checked "Reverse Unicode" Box, then hit "OK". You can highlight as many songs as you want at once and still perform the same thing, to save you time.
Hope this helps you.

• Korean characters are displayed as blank box on the TextField in Galaxy Note 3/Android 4.4/AIR 4.0

The AIR SDK we used is 1/14/2014 Release - AIR 4.
The device we have tested on is Samsung Galaxy Note 3/Android 4.4.
We found that it's quite similar with Bug 3681788 which has been fixed in Beta version 4.0.0.1619.
We checked the issue again with this beta version, and the result is Chinese characters are shown correctly, but Korean's are still not.
Bug 3681788: The CCJ languages characters are displayed as blank box on the TextField.
Hope it can be fixed as soon as possible.

Japanese Characteres have same issue.
We tested on ASUS Nexus 7/Android 4.4.2/AIR 4.0 and Japanese characters are displayed as blank box in the TextField.
The AIR SDK we used is February 20th 2014 Release - AIR 4.
The device we have tested on is ASUS Nexus 7/Android 4.4.2.
AIR SDK 3.6 worked fine.
AIR SDK 3.9 has same issue.
We tested Chinese on ASUS Nexus 7/Android 4.4.2/AIR 4.0, and Chinese Characters are displayed as blank box in the TextField.
I doubt that Korean Characters will also displayed as blank box.( Sorry we cannot read or write Korean so we couldn't test it)
I am guessing GalaxyNote 3(4.4) may also have same issue with Japanese.
Hope this helps

• Itunes can't read korean characters since switching to google chrome

I switched to google chrome and for some reason every song with Korean hangul characters on my itunes turns into square boxes. I have songs with Japanese kanji on my itunes but I see them perfectly, it's only Korean characters.
This happened before but I switched back to firefox (which solved the problem). I really don't wanna go back to firefox though...is there any way to fix this?

Eduardo Kim hello,
If you select the iTunes Icon in your applications folder and get info you will see the Languages tab check and see what is available... to get the correct Korean version as there is more than one start system preferences and choose international > languages... use the help files to find what you need to know by clicking on the Question mark...
Take care Eduardo ... TP

• How do I get Korean characters to show up in the "Get Info" window if they show up normal in iTunes normally?

The Korean characters show up fine when viewing the song in the Music section. However, when I right click the song and go to "Get Info" to edit the song's info, the Korean characters show up as boxes. It does not do this for the Chinese and Japanese characters. I have already tried the: Control Panel>Fonts>Font settings>Uncheck "Hide fonts based on language settings">"Ok" method, but to no avail. I am using iTunes 11.0.4.4.
Please help!

If you don't see anything when you connect your ipod it's meybe something wrong with the USB cable, If you have another you can try that.
try to shut down or restart your ipod and then connect it.

• Arabic characters appear as empty squares when using certain HTML tags or font styles

Only when HW acceleration is on. Arabic characters appear as empty squares when using "italic" or "oblique" font styles or when using or html tags.
Try this code to replicate the problem

<i>i tag مشكلة ظهور المربعات الخالية بدل الحروف <br> <br>
<em>em tag مشكلة ظهور المربعات الخالية بدل الحروف </em>

After lots of research, I found the problem. The boxes (squares) show up whenever there is a font in the webpage that does not have Arabic within its Unicode range such as Times New Roman Italic or Oblique. Normally, Firefox will pick another font to display the characters but now, a newly introduced feature is interfering.
To fix the problem without turning off hardware acceleration.
Go to about:config
locate: gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.use_gdi_table_loading
which is True by default in FF4.0 Beta 10, and change it to False.
This is a bug that has to be fixed.

• Symbol in annotation PDF, the symbol appeared as box in edit pop up

We have received a correction with ~ symbol in annotation PDF, the symbol appeared as box in edit pop up window whereas the symbol displaying correctly in comments tab (see gsf_341.png).
Request you to analyze the reason for the different display.

That's a font issue you are seeing.
As to the reason. It would depend on the workflow used.
It could be that the original replacement text was typed in a text-editor using a particular font and then copied and pasted into the comment in Acrobat. When you copy and paste text, if the font that is applied changes it could be that the new font doesn't support particular characters, in those cases a small square box can appear.

But when I take the print of that list, the Korean characters will not appear. Instead, a hash symbol will be comming for all the Korean characters.
Can you please tell how to fix this issue.
Regards.

• Junk characters appearing

hi folks,
Junk characters appearing in the text file when the korean language is downloaded from the sap internal table.
please help to resolve this.
Regards,
Rohan.

Hi Rohan,
Can you debug and check if the junk characters are appearing in the internal tables at runtime?
It could be possible that your output file, when opened with Notepad or Word, does not recognise the Korean language characters.
Please do revert back if this isn't the case...
Cheers,
Shailesh.

• Can't see korean characters in flash 10

I have my language/local set to Korean; also, I.E 8 has encodings for utf-8 set. (Same problem when viewed in Firefox vs 2.0.0.12) It is an English version of Windows XP, SP2 (all the latest patches installed - excluding SP3) This problem exists with a number of web sites; the attached file shows an example: the flash display (located line +5 from the top) does not display korean characters in the right box, yet, the left box is fine, note, this problem is illustrated elsewhere on this page. the URL is www.mnet.com Although I am illustrating this problem with a 'community' web site, I have the same problem on my employer's web site; and therefore, I would apprecate valuable responses as to how to address this problem. thanks. B.

I have found the answer. It turns out that the option on the Advanced tag under regional options correct this problem; also corrects a similar problem I had with alpine emailer not displaying Korean. thanks to all who may have read and thought about this problem.

• Safari delete key bug on Korean characters

Currently, I'm using 2014 mid Macbook Pro Retina 15'' .
I've recently updated Safari to 7.1 version, and came out that Safari has delete key bug while using Korean characters for input.
When I'm trying to delete Korean character in Safari, the delete key doesn't work right away, so I have to spam delete several times to get words deleted.
This bug newly appeared after updating Safari to 7.1, which was released August, and several Korean communities also said they are having same issue.
To confirm the issue, just type few words with Korean letters and try to delete with delete key.

• Corrupted korean characters

Iam not able to save korean characters in database.
1.I was using korean characters in a database. The korean characters were saved in fields of type varchar/nvarchar2.
2.Due to some reason the server is restarted and now Iam not able to enter new korean characters.
3.The korean characters which are already entered in the fleld of type varchar is corrupted and the korean characters which were entered in the field of type nvarchar2 is not corrupted.
4.But Iam not able to enter new korean characters in fields of both types(varchar/nvarchar2)
Some NLS_Database_parameters:
NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE:AMERICAN; NLS_SORT:BINARY; NLS_CHARACTERSET:WE8ISO8859P1 NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET:AL16UTF16; NLS_LANGUAGE:AMERICAN; NLS_TERRITORY:AMERICA
Note that I was able to save Korean characters earlier and after server restart Iam not able to save it now.
What could be the possible problem??

That is HIGHLY unsupported in any modern version of the database. It may appear to work, but there are any number of things that might be broken.
If this is anything other than a toy database, I would strongly advise you to
1) Retain the backup from before you did this, assuming there is other data in this database you care about
2) Create a new database, with the proper character set, and do an export and import from this database to the new one. That should minimize the risk of things going wrong down the line.
In the future, you should not be updating any table in the SYS schema without being explicitly told to do so by someone from Oracle Support.

• Arial Korean Characters & Vista

Hello.
I have an SWF (Actually projector .exe file) that has a
combobox that has Arial Embedded Fonts in it.
This combobox has a list of languages and one of them happens
to be Korean (in Korean characters).
In XP, the language shows up fine in the pulldown, but in
Vista, it shows 3 blocks instead. Obviously, this is not good. Can
anyone tell me how to get this to work?
I have embedded the font into the FLA file as a font Symbol
and use Actionscript to embed the font to the combobox.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Doug
Code Below:

OK, so I think I fixed it.
I was using Flash 8 on my XP Box to build. I used Flash CS3
on my MAC and built the .exe on there. (It embeds Flash Player 8
(or 9?) into the .exe file and when I run it on Vista, all is well.
The Korean characters show up in the combobox just fine in Vista.
