KT2 Combo will not boot

Installed board with Duron 1300. The board booted to bios with no problems, until I formatted the HD and rebooted. It will not boot now at all. No bios, VGA doesn't even come on. No beeps. No HD activity, nothing. I cleared CMOS and nothing happened. Please help me!!!!

No beebs? PC-speaker connected? If there is no beebs or life of any kind, the motherboard or some some other part may be shortcutted. Or something very VERY important has fried on the motherboard or PSU is broken.
If it's a short circuit, disassemble you computer completely and try to boot your mobo out of the case w only the most neccessary equipment installed.
Also, don't forget to check your fsb jumper that it isn't in the wrong setting, it is right next to clear cmos jumper and if you accidentaly switch that in the process from fsb 100 to 133 the mobo will most certainly not boot.

Hi,
I had everything running on windows 7 fine until 2 days ago. I installed Live Update from MSI website. I was about to install driver updates for my motherboard, but the bios update went instead. my pc tried to restart after the bios update installed, but it failed. would not post and would only see black screen.
then i removed one of my memory sticks. it would post, but then windows would not start up. it would get stuck at windows loading screen. i tried to reformat with my windows cd. but during install it would blue screen of death me. i tried multiple times and it would always blue screen of death with different errors. the last one i remember was a message saying i should off turn shadowing and caching.
this all started happening after i attempted bios update via Live Update.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Mini will not boot disks from combo drive

Mini was having "issues." Thought I would do a clean install to correct all problems. When I insert OSX install disk and hold "C" key the computer tries to boot from the disk. The grey screen and apple logo apear. But instead of then going to the little spinning grey bars and booting to the disk, the grey apple shifts to the right and a some trash appears to the right of the logo, the computer freezes.
I have run the computer in terminal mode and run disks on the optical drive just fine.
It simply will not boot off of a disk in the optical drive.

Try booting into safemode by holding down shift key. Sometimes it does take up to 5 minutes to boot into safemode but sometimes your atleast able to uses your computer as a temporary fix. If you can't boot into safemode it sound's like your hard drive has failed, in that case you would need to contact apple for a repair.

KT2-Combo won't boot

All,
Have a KT2-Combo which has been running fine for a few months. This morning, I went to turn it on and it will not boot.
Get 2 short beeps, followed by 1 long beep.
Fans are all on.... no video.
D-Bracket shows Green LEDS on 1, 2, and, 3. Red for LED 4.
Can't find the D-Bracket Error codes. Downloaded manual from MSI but that particular page has an error which prevents it from loading (figures!).
Any Ideas???

Same thing...2 short beeps followed by a longer beep. D-Bracket still displaying LEDs 1, 2 and 3 Green LED 4 Red.

IMac will not boot, hard drive file problem? Can't install OS in 2nd part.

The iMac will not boot. The Apple displays on the screen, the cursor spins for awhile, and then it loops into a reboot effort.
Last night, I was doing a lot of custom file sharing settings using the include enclosed folders option at the bottom of the Get Info window.
Question 1: Could that file sharing process have messed things up?
In an effort to get things going........ A few weeks back, I used Disk Utility to create a 2nd partition, with the intent of installing Ubuntu Linux there. I never attempted the install, as far as I can remember, while playing with the Ubuntu Live CD. So, I thought I would install 10.5.6 from the CD in the 2nd partition. But I get an error message that says "The installer could not create the folder "/Volumes/Ubuntu 9.10/BaseSystem.pkg.161nDNDdQ.""
Question 2: I also shared that partition, could that have caused the OS install failure?
Question 3: If I understand the book correctly, I can try to install the OS from the CD on the 1st partition, and not lose my data, correct? Unfortunately, I don't have any backup for the data, as I don't own any drives large enough yet to accommodate the data on the drive.
Question 4: Anyone have any other thoughts as to what ent wrong?

Sometimes, it just pays to think on a problem. I awoke thinking, if it will boot the OS X install CD, it ought to boot my Ubuntu Live CD. And then, maybe I can change permissions on the first partition. As soon as I thought that, it occurred to me, if the problems are with the permissions, what if I used the OS X disk, and erased (formatted) the Ubuntu partition. That should set all the permissions on that partition back to default. Would OS X install then to the Ubuntu partition?
You better believe it did!! I'm typing this from the Mac after updating my 10.5.6 to 10.5.8 in the 2nd partition, and I'm booting from the 2nd partition.
I then did as you suggested, and from the Mac, I repaired the permissions to the first partition. But, the result was the same, there are a few permissions that do not match, and Disk Utility cannot, does not, or will not correct them.
I'm currently downloading the 10.5.8 combo update .dmg file. My thought is to burn that to a disk, and then install it over the version in partition 1. And trust that the current installation on partition 1 does not have any cross linked files that will destroy some data.
I do have some old ATA IDE drives I can hook externally to the Mac, and copy some of the information I have from the Mac to those drives before doing the 10.5.8 install.
Can you think of a better solution?

Did the problems start after upgrading the OS? If so you could try:
a) Re-applying the update using the 'combo', if you haven't already. The combo contains all revisions to the OS since 10.8.0 in one update package and sometimes helps resolve odd behaviour after an update.

b) completely re-install the OS using the Recovery HD (re-installing the OS won't delete you data):

Whatever you decide to do, ensure you have up-to-date tested backup of all your data by way of Time Machine or a clone. I doubt you'll need it, but it's an essential requirement so that you can roll back to a previous state in the unlikely event of things going wrong.

Powerbook G4 will not boot normally, only in safe mode.

So...about a month ago I updated my powerbook with all the updates that were available, one of the updates was 10.5.8. I came back after the update had run for a while, and found my computer with a black screen, and a faint white bar towards the bottom of the screen. The computer wouldn't respond, and I was forced to do a manual shutdown. The computer would then not boot, instead finally resting on a light blue screen with an active mouse pointer after passing the gray apple screen.
In safe mode, I downloaded and installed the combo 10.5.8 update, but it made no difference.
I assumed it to obviously be a software issue, and so I backed up my info, and reinstalled Leopard. I then updated to 10.5.8 using the combo update. My computer functioned normally for about a week, and then froze, mouse responsive, but nothing else. After manual shutdown, same problem, computer started to blue screen with pointer.
Since that time I've reset the PRAM, run disk utility a million times (no errors), repaired permissions, all to no avail. I've run the Techtool diagnostics on it, and it found no hardware failures. The computer will not boot from an external hard drive, ruling out the HD.
I've replaced the RAM with different RAM, again will not boot. The computer boots without fail every time in safe mode.
History on my computer, one of my memory slots failed to recognize memory any longer, and my logic board was replaced a little less than 2 years ago while I still had applecare.
So to sum up:
Powerbook boots only in safe mode
Stays at blue screen with mouse pointer when booting
May work properly for a few days after erase and install of OS, but then fails again with same systems shortly thereafter
Any ideas???

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
Do the following:

If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

MBP will not boot up with USB devices connected

I have a late 2010 MBP 15 10.7.2 that will no longer boot up if any USB devices are attached. A dongle, a hub, anything. It goes to the gray screen and stays there. Disconnecting all USB devices the MBP will boot up. Then connecting the USB devices they work. It just will not boot up with anything connected to the USB ports. I have reset PRAM, SMC and fixed disk permissions. Made sure login items are ok, and start up disk is correct. I cant really say when the problem started as it worked fine before, maybe on 10.7.1? Not sure.
Any suggestions for a fix?

I re-installed the 10.7.2 combo. It booted up with a non powered usb 4 port hub but it disabled it. Plugging it out then in again and it works. Looks like the USB firmware has changed somehow in 10.7.2, The hub works on PC's at work no problem, and it worked on the MBP without issue previously. Its not just the non powered hub its a powered hub, and other devices.
Any solutions?

IBook G3 will not boot

Hello. Recently my mother's iBook G3 decided to stop booting. The information I have seems to suggest that the Open Firmware is gone, yet the information also suggests it's still there.
When I power the machine on, it makes the "Bong!" noise, but never illuminates the screen. The backlight never comes on, and as far as I can tell, no image is sent to the screen (in fact, I don't even think any power is getting to the screen). The hard disk will spin up, I can hear some disk access going on, and then it stops. The disc is still spinning, and nothing happens. I've let the machine sit for up to 20 minutes with no change.
My first guess was a bad hard disk. To test this, I put the iBook in Target Disk Mode. Much to my surprise, the machine powered on, and obediently went into TDM, complete with the Firewire emblem dancing around the screen. I connected the iBook to my MacBook Pro through a 6-pin FireWire cable, and after letting the machine sit for a bit, I eventually got access to the hard disk. Disk Utilities showed that there was no problem with the disk, and I was able to back up my mother's files with no problem.
This is where I started to think the OS is damaged, and I attempted to boot from the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with the iBook. This was, however, a moot point as it seems the optical drive no longer likes to read CDs. I'd test this by duplicating the CD onto a DVD, but I don't think Combo drives read DVDs, do they? (honestly, it's been so long I can't remember if they do or don't)
I then tried using Super Duper! to copy the disc onto my flash drive, which didn't work (I think that might have to do with the fact that Super Duper! used a GUID partition table, instead of the Apple Partition Map). I also happened to have an external USB DVD-RW drive lying around, but it doesn't seem that the iBook likes booting from that either.
I have also tried booting the iBook into the Disk Chooser screen (holding down option while booting) but that gets me nowhere. I've balanced a battery onto the Option key and let it sit for about ten minutes and got nowhere.
I zapped the PRAM/NVRAM and got nothing. I tried booting into Open Firmware, and got nothing. I tried booting my MacBook Pro into Target Disk Mode and connecting it to the iBook, and getting to the Disk Chooser on the iBook in an attempt to use my MacBook Pro as a $3,000 FireWire DVD-RW drive, but that got nowhere (I know this method works, because I used my iBook G4 as a disk drive for a friend with another G3 iBook which also had a shot optical drive).
I'm quite lost here. On one hand, information seems to suggest that the Open Firmware is shot to ****, but if that was true, I shouldn't have been able to zap the PRAM/NVRAM with the correct key combo. Nor should I have been able to access Target Disk Mode, or get the Boot Bong. This suggests that the hard disk is dead, but that isn't supported by the Target Disk Mode letting me access the disk, and it shouldn't interfere with the Open Firmware.
I'm going to try a couple more things, but at this point, I don't know how far I can get in repairing this without
A) Opening up the computer and replacing the optical drive or the hard disk
B) Booting via USB (is that possible with the G3?)
C) Advice from others

I'm pretty sure an iBook G3 will not boot from a USB external device, but only from a FireWire external device. So if you want to try booting from an external optical drive, it will need to be a Firewire drive. If you want to try booting from an external hard drive, it will need to be a Firewire drive and the partition scheme will have to be the Apple Partition map.
I have used Super Duper to clone my iBook G4 both onto a drive with the GUID partition scheme and onto a drive with the Apple partition map. I could access files from either one, but could only boot the machine from the one with the Apple Partition map. I don't know why you weren't able to clone the drive onto the USB drive.

If the hard drive in the G3 is the original, then it is around 6 years old, and could well be going south. Even though you have been able to retrieve the files, it may have problems that won't let the G3 boot from it any more. And it doesn't sound like you have anything else the G3 could boot from since you only have USB devices.
It may well be that the iBook has logic board problems as Ronda suggests, and the pressure test is well worth doing. It's also possible that the ATA bus on the logic board has failed and that is why the iBook won't boot from hard drive. I believe that the optical drive is on the same bus, although it could just be bad.
If you have a firewire external drive that you could set up with the Apple partition map, you could try doing a Super Duper clone onto that, and then see if it would boot from the external. If the pressure test does not get the iBook to boot, the next thing to try would be to try to boot from an external firewire device, which does not use the ATA bus. If that works, you can boot from the external indefinitely.

PowerMac G4 Dual Optical - will not boot & no display

PowerMac G4 Dual Optical - Model Number 8570 EMC No 1914 : 1.25GHz DP/256M DDR@ 333/80G/Combo/MDM Operating system OS X 1st or 2nd release
This machine was used daily until February 2007. From then till the last week of September 2009 the machine was in storage and was not powered up
When tried for the first time in over 2 years, the machine powered up and the main switch on the front of the computer came on but no audible chime was heard. The machine will not boot & no display (apart from grey screen visible).
The 3.6 v lithium battery was replaced. PRAM & NVRAM has been reset via the keyboard commands : CommandOption+PR keys. After this, the chimes would work on power up but nothing is visible on screen. Also although the keyboard is functional evidenced by the success of the PRAM reset commands, the num & caps lock lights will not work nor will the CD drive "arrow" eject button. I have also removed the battery, reset the PMU on the logic board, and left the machine for over 30 minutes before powering up again:
Please advise if there is anything else I can try before I take it to a dealer for repair ?

PowerMac G4 Will not boot

My Mac G4 at work will not boot. When it tries to boot up, all I can see is a grey screen with a flashing folder icon. I've tried to use the command-option-p-r key combo to re-start the machine, no luck. I know they shut the power down last night, but im positive that the computer was off. TIA

2009 Mac Pro will not boot up under Windows

I have an Early 2009 Mac Pro system (Mac Pro 4,1) and I've had this system for 3 years already and have been working under OS X with this system ever since I purchased it.
However, when I tried to boot off my Windows disk, something very interesting happens. The Mac Pro WILL NOT boot up off the Windows disk or a known working Windows partition if two monitors are connected. Upon holding down the option key and selecting the Windows partition, I will get a black screen on one monitor (the one connected via Mini Displayport) and the other screen receives no signal and will enter standby and the system is halted. It does not respond to keystrokes, there is no hard drive activity, no measured power increase on the UPS, no apparent network activity, nothing. The only way to exit this scenario (from what I can tell) is to power off the machine, disconnect the display on DVI, power on the machine again, select the Windows partition wait for the system to reach the login window and reconnect the DVI monitor (at which time Windows recognizes it immediately and the system works fine again).
My question to the community is, does anybody know why this is happening and is there a known fix for this? Quite frankly, having to disconnect a monitor just to restart is very tedious and frustrating.
I have two Samsung P2350 monitors attached to an ATI Radeon HD 4870 (512MB, from Apple). One is monitor is connected via directly DVI and the other is using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter. Both monitors work fine under OS X with no issue. At first, I thought that this may be a driver issue on the Windows side and after installing all the latest updates and drivers the issue is still apparent. From what I can tell, this doesn't seem like a software issue but rather a firmware or EFI issue as this happens before Windows even loads.
If anyone knows of a fix or what to do in this situation, or if you are also having this issue, I would love to hear your input!

For the record, I am running all the latest software builds on the OS X side (10.7.4, not that it would really matter at this point). I have also disconnected all unnecessary equipment in a trial and error scenario but the results are still the same.
The system passes all ASD testing.
The full specification of the computer and all connected equipment are as follows:
2009 Mac Pro (4,1) 8-Core
2x Intel Xeon Nehalem 2.66GHz Quad-Core CPUs
16GB DDR3 ECC 1066MHz RAM (Apple Branded)
Two OWC 120GB SSDs (One for OS X, the other for Windows 7 x64) - These are in place of my optical drives.
4x 2TB WD Black Hard drives for storage.
Two Samsung P2350 Monitors connected via DVI. (One using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter).

In Windows I am using the latest (12.4) Catalyst Software Suite, 64 bit of course, downloaded directly from AMD's site after installing the drivers from Boot Camp.
As for installing Windows I used an original (not burned) installation media (Disk is in a pristine condition). And yes, Windows is fine, the problem just seems to be getting the system to boot up Windows with that second monitor. However if the "problem monitor" is disconnected the system boots fine 100% of the time and connecting it later after booting the system will still operate properly.
For the sake of arguement I swapped monitor cables and connected the "second" monitor to the mini displayport adapter to verify that it wasn't a cabling issue and I'm still yielding the same issues.
As for GPU testing, I've played games (Crysis, Grand Theft Auto IV, Battlefield 3, etc.) and I've had no issues with the card or stability.
You would think that Apple would try to find a fix for this, especially considering the caliber of this machine.

Macbook Pro will not boot up normally ***Not Normal Problems***

Ok. I have an older 17" Macbook pro 2.33 (10.6 fully updated) that will not boot up in normal mode. When I boot it shows "blocks" of different colors and will not get past the blue screen sometimes. When it does get passed the the blue or grey screen it is a split screen of white back ground with large black blocks seperating the sides. I have tried swapping out harddrives with a known working one with an OSX image on it-no good. I have tried swapping out ram-same thing. I reset the SMC and PRAM-only colors changed in the blocks. I have ran disk utilites disk and permisions with no problems. I can't boot into a restore disk using the c key during boot, It locks up at the same screen. Nothing works except safe mode. I can boot into safe mode and everything works just fine with normal screen and all. Now I tried runing the Lion installer thinking it is and driver issue but I can't get Lion to boot to the hard drive and Snow leopard just reboots back to the same screen. So how can I get Lion to install or Snow Leopard?
What can I do? I noticed this last weekend when I tried to reboot my MB Pro and it started this. Well Apple pushed and update last friday - I needed to restart it again and this happends. I thought it was a logic board at fist until it booted fine in safe mode.

Sorry. What I mean is I selected the SL boot up in the start up panel and it would not boot into the cd. The CD rom sounds like it just keeps reading with it slowly loading from grey screen to blue screen to the Block screen. Almost like it is booting into normal mode from the hard drive.
What I can't understand is why it runs fine is Safe mode?
Also why do I get a " this disk cannot be used to start up your computer" message on my hard drive when trying to install Lion in safe mode? Well why not it's the only hard drive in the computer?
The first screen shot is the Tech tool showing everything passed the hardware test is safe mode.
