Kt3-amd1800xp-98se-ram trouble-

i have a ram problem, i have the kt3 ultra2,ms-6380e, win98se,with pc2100 512mb, amd 1800xp,ati radeon 9000 128ddr, (2) western 60gb hdd. the problem is i can't add more ram chips. board can goto 3 gb but i heard win 98se will not. is there a patch or fix. sorry to sound dumb on this but i am at a wall. i love games and want to boost them. oh, also what is best way to adjust multiplyer and voltage? and help or site to get fixes will be loved. thanks

Hi!
You are right about W98 - it will normally not be able to use more than 512 mB. I know there is a fix for that and it can be downloaded from the Microsoft site.
I am not sure, however that adding more RAM will boost the performance of your system, actually I guess that it will not show ...
If you want to spend money anyway, I would suggest to look into an upgrade to W2K or XP because these Operating Systems are both considerably faster than W98: If the games you want to play are not too old and if you do not have very old hardware (scanner, printer, etc.) such an upgrade would not be a big problem (and it will solve the current RAM problem as well).

I am running an MSI KT3 Ultra ARU Mainboard with an amd athlon xp 1500+ processor, a GeForce4 Ti4200 made by Gainward (64mb), two AOC 120MM case fans, one 80mm case fan, a thermaltake volcano 7 speed variable Heatsink, two crucial 512MB pc2100 DDR Ram Chips a sony 16x12x40x cdrw and an LG 16x dvd rom, as well as a 20gig tape drive by HP and floppy drive.  The hard drive is a maxtor diamondmax 60GB.  all this powerd by an Antec 350W PSU.
Specs over with, heres the problem
I can only boot from floppy disk.  Booting from the hard disk gives me an "Error Loading Operating System" error, I have tried two other drives and both of these drives have OS's on them, winnt4 and winxp respectively.  The Maxtor drive is clean but not new, I am formatting it as we speak to see if that works.  I have tried to boot from a bootable win2k cd on two different CDRW drives as well as an old CD Rom drive, and a DVD rom drive.  I always get this error "Searching for Boot Record from CD.....None Found" proceeded by the "Error Loading Operating System" error.  I am running everything off the three IDE plugs, with round IDE cable(I have tried flat ones, no luck with those either)  I am not attempting to run this in a RAID array at all.
Anyone got any ideas as to why this problem would be occuring????

    hi nailz,
Hope this may solve your problem. In the BIOS, Advanced BIOS Features, set "Boot Sequency" 1st, 2nd, 3rd boot devices to the SAME one, ie Floppy for all, or 1st Master HDD for all. Then reboot. Disable "Try boot device' first. Repeat this until you get the board to boot the device.
    If can't,
    Clear the CMOS and retry.
    If can't,
(In the BIOS) select all IDE devices and set to NONE. Set "Clear NVRAM" in PCI Configuration. Save and exit the BIOS, then re-entering BIOS in the next boot, enable all IDE devices. Save and exit, re-enter BIOS once more, check the "Boot Sequence".
Yup... try changing around with IDE settings in the BIOS. Good luck.

  • RAM trouble (4MEM/9/40000000: 0xb865f398)

I have an iMac 21.5" (mid 2010). Off and on over the past year I have had random shut downs "because of an unexpected error". Recently it has gotten much worse. Firefox has crashed a lot, or any other app that is more intensive. I reformatted my iMac, but that didn't help. I ran the Apple Hardware Test, and it gave the error code:
    4MEM/9/40000000: 0xb865f398
From what I know, this is related to the RAM. I have four 4GB Kingston Tech modules installed. I removed all but one, then ran the Hardware Test again. After going through all four modules, all the tests stated "No Trouble Found". Then I ran I module in each port to check if a port was bad, and still found no trouble. I've run two at a time and three at a time, but still "No Trouble Found". The only time I get the error message is when all four modules are installed.
Does anyone know what the problem could be? Even if I leave only three modules installed (which didn't give an error message when I ran the Hardware Test) I still have frequent crashes and freezes. I've got OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 installed.
    Thanks for the help!

Install the original RAM that shipped with the Mac and then test. If it is OK (I suspect it is) replace the Kingston RAM (which tends to be problematic in iMacs) with a higher quality RAM from either Crucial or OWC, purchase directly from either vendor. iMacs are sensitive to RAM and demand high quality RAM rather than value RAM.
Your issue is one of the following:
    Failed RAM
    Incorrect RAM
    Unseated RAM

Having some trouble with my new RAM I bought for X-mas (w00t)... BUT to much my dismay, I may have caused some trouble with my own comp... See, I had a Corsair Value Select (2pack) 1GB pack installed just yesterday... Ran fine, then when I received these new modules (Corsair TwinX 1GB Pair 2-2-2-5-2, 2T) pack, and installed them, my machine would start (BIOS, Network Card, Sata screens) then when it came to the Windows XP screen, my machine would sound it was rebooting, my monitor light turns orange-and nothing happens... I haven't changed any bios settings relevant to my RAM timings or anything. This memory supposidely automatically clocks at those timings with no bios changes (according to manufacturer).. Model on the RAM - TWINX1024-3200XLTP.

  • Possible Ram Trouble

Yesterday I installed a new stick of 1gig Ram in my 2.16 ghz MacBook Pro. Everything seemed to run fine. THere is a definite speed boost throughout my computer and it is recognized when I click "about this mac".
Here is my trouble: I woke up today with my computer completely locked up, and after watching numerous flash videos on safari, my computer completely shuts off and then reboots. This has happened twice in the last two hours. In between that happening, my computer dropped a dark grey color (almost like a curtain coming down on my display) and the computer telling me to hold down the power button until it turned off and reboot.
I put in my install disk and ran the hardware utility on the extended test twice. It never said there was a problem.
I don't know if it helps, but in the hardware display the following numbers were different between both pieces of ram, so I thought it might be important...
    DIMM0: Oc7F7F7F8A00000000
    DIMM1: 0xCE00000000000000
    Thanks,
    Jon

    Hi Jon,
If your MBP worked prior to installing the ram, and now has issues, it is the ram. AHT will not always detect bad ram. A way to test the ram is to remove it, and see if the issues stops. It also could be that the ram is not properly seated. You could check that too.

  • KT3 Ultra2/AMD/RAM problems.

Okay, this is my first time taking it to a forum for help, so dont let me down guys.
Im a tech at DrComputers in Oklahoma, right now Im stumped with a problem that I have seen twice. It all has to deal with the Kt3 Ultra2 board, 2000+ or 2200+ AMD XP, and Samsung 512 2700 ddr sticks.
Here is the lay out, the board is ground mounted, meaning no case and a rubber/foam layer below it, CPU has a large heatsink on it, more then it needs. There are no other devices attached to it other then a vid card, no hdd's, no fd's, no cdroms.  As for the RAM, I have two sticks of 512 of Samsung 2700.
It will not hold a host clock speed of 133, but it stays fine at 100. I have changed the DRAM timing as shown.
     SDR timing by                  User
      Sdram frequency            HCLK+33
       sdram case latency       2
       Row Precharge time     2t
       RAS Pulse Width           5t
       RAS to CAS delay          3t
       SDRAM band interleave 4 way
       SDram burst lenght       4 qw
       SDRAM 1t command       Enabled
       Fast Command              Ultra
I have changed those values to the other ones, and it wont hold the memory nor the CPU posted speed. All it will tell me is 512 megs and 1500+ XP.
And I have flashed the BIOS.
Thank you if you can help me, I just need it that bad.

umm...i have my KT3 ultra w running at Ultra +HCLK+33 and max mem timings...you should put your foot back in your mouth :]

HCLK+33 sets memory bus to 166 MHz (DDR333) but the bus between the CPU and memory controller is still at 133 MHz.  From what I have read and talking to other users the HCLK+33 only gives at most 3 to 7 % increase in memory benchmarks but most do not notice any increase in normal programs or games.

For Revision E and later revisions the Mod64BitMux bit (Function 2: Offset 90h bit 6), can be used to

mismatched DIMMs to be installed in the upper and lower DIMM slots without reducing any of the

  • Satellite A135-2356 Ram troubles

Well it came with 512mb of ddr2.  I ordered 1 gb of Ram (compatible per the sites automated recomendation).  I installed the 1 GB stick and now it does not know the 512mb stick is there.  I tried swapping the places of the sticks and still it only recognizes the 1 gb stick.  I took the 1 gb stick out and the 512 shows up.  I tried updating the bios and still the issue persists.
Do the sticks need to be matched in this laptop size wise?  Would ordering another 1gb stick fix it?  Not that it matters (since bios does not recognize it either) but I am running Windows 7 32 bit.
    Thanks in advance.

The sticks don't need to be matched, but they do need to be compatible.  Your symptoms are typical of a module that is outside the timing tolerances required by Toshiba.  It will operate alone but not with another stick.  Toshibas are notoriously picky about RAM and the only 'right stuff' as far as Toshiba is concerned is the correct Kingston module.  In your case that would be the Kingston KTT533D2/1G.  I would return the non-conforming part for a refund or replacement with the correct memory.  Those automated recommendations are often wrong.

  • Bad RAM on PowerMac G5 - Interpreting POST

I have a problem with RAM DDR400 on a PowerMac G5 2x2 GHz (July 2004 model with 8 DIMM slots) equipped with 4 x 256 Mo and 2 x 512 Mo SDRAM all installed in pairs by the vendor .
Recently, after updating to OSX Tiger - 10.4.7 or 8 - I discover that the 4 x 256 Mo memory items are well recognized by OSX - according to "About this Mac" and "System Infos" - but not the 2 x 512 Mo SDRAM...!!! So, my G5 showed I only had 1 Go RAM instead of 2 Go. And I guess it used only 1 Go.
I tried everything from Tiger clean install to disk repair, PRAM reset, etc ... with no effect at all on the "missing" RAM's recognition by OSX.
Then I ran the "Apple Hardware Test" software (CD v.2.2.4). It shows - in red alert - the two 512 Mo DIMMs as "0-512 Mo" RAM (instead of 512 Mo fit) with one indicated as "failed POST". Then the quick test comments this failed DIMM5 (J42) with the following error message : "post/0/2048"...!!!
Did somebody knows what the Power-on Self Test (POST) "0/2048" error exactly means ??
Is there somewhere a kind of "list" referencing POST errors ?
Initially the 2 Go RAM were fully recognized by Panther 10.3.8 (cf. "System Infos") with the G5 firmware 5.1.8f2. However, when upgrading to Tiger (10.4.0), I also updated my G5 firmware with 5.1.8f7 (as recommended for June 2004 PowerMac G5).
Is it possible that the G5 firmware update "damaged" or "changed" something related to the RAM's access by OSX Tiger ?
Any help or suggestion will be welcomed. Thanks in advance.

    PowerMac G5 2x2 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

To maclover and DaddyPaycheck and all concerned readers
I successfully solved my problem of "disappeared" RAM memory (DDR400) on my PowerMac G5 2x2 GHz ( (July 2004 model with 8 DIMM slots). Mostly with help from two readers - namely MACLOVER and DADDYPAYCHECK who reacted quickly to my call for help, both with a very good advice. And I thank them for that. Because it's really helpful when you're faced with a serious problem never encountered before.
So, being now out of trouble I wrote this "debriefing" note to testify about the process of how to identify and solve the bug.
This could possibly help other "normal" Mac users... I mean non-expert like me.
    1 - About the problem's "origin".
I discovered the "missing" RAM just by chance after looking at "About this Mac" and "System Infos" after updating my OSX Tiger system from 10.4.5 to 10.4.7 and 4.8. "About this Mac" mentioned only 1 Go of RAM (instead of 2 Go physically installed 2 years ago). The "System Infos - memory" panel" confirmed that only my four 256 Mo DIMMs were "recognized" and "active" (mentioning type, speed and "state" OK). My two 512 Mo RAM units have "disappeared" and the DIMM slots were identified as "empty"! This diagnosis has been confirmed by "Onyx" and Mac Pilot" utilities. So, it's trustable.
Then I ran the "Apple Hardware Test" software (CD v.2.2.4). The "Quick Test" immediately identified the problem. Its "Hardware Profile" panel showed the 4 x 256 Mo DIMMs as active with correct size/speed. But AHT displayed a "red alert" about the two 512 Mo DIMMs (seated into J41 and J42 slots) that were referred as "0-512 Mo" RAM (instead of straight 512 Mo) with one DIMM (J42) marked as "failed POST". The "Extended Test" provided additional data about the failing RAM with the error message (in red) : "post/0/2048/DIMM5/J42".
2 - No software nor system debugging
First, I suspected the OSX update to have changed something about the RAM's recognition by the System. So, I tried usual maintenance and correcting actions - repairing authorizations, restarting the Mac (even as single user), zapping the PRAM, etc. Then I reinstalled Tiger including a "clean install" from the Tiger DVD. Without any success... Because it has been later demonstrated that intrinsically this kind of "hardware bug" cannot be solved by software "manipulations"!
    3 - Solution : Reinstalling the RAM
Thus I decided to turn to the RAM's direct check, as suggested by the two readers.
Initially, I was quite reluctant to put my hands on the memory hard because I never did it. But I found it rather easy to do. After reading the Apple knowledge base's memory replacement guideline ... and taking special care of static electricity (wearing a wire bracelet connected to the G5's case). This point is important as static electricity could definitely damage RAM memory cards.
So I removed the two 512 Mo DIMMs from their original slots and re-installed them into the adjacent pair of slots (in place of two 256 Mo DIMMs).
At the first restart under Tiger 10.4.8.. Bingo : "About this Mac" and "System Infos" panels displayed the expected "2 Go" of RAM. Both the RAM memory cards and the DIMMs slots are OK.
4 - The "Lessons" learned from this troubleshooting.
In conclusion, I would say that above-mentioned readers were right : in such case - "no show" RAM - the best option is to remove and inspect the DIMM and then - if cards and connectors looks good - to reinstall it correctly ... and carefully!
By the way, I would recommend to re-install the suspected DiMMs into a different pair of slots than the original ones. This "cross install" procedure allows to check the validity of both the RAM itself and the DIMM slots with only one manipulation. So there is no need to make another move for installing the RAM by size hierarchy. In my G5 bipro, RAM is now fitted (by pairs) in the DIMMs' rows 1 to 3 with a 256-512-256 Mo sequence and it works.
I would also strongly recommend to run the "Apple Hardware Test" (AHT) software to get a more detailed diagnosis. For example, AHT gave me the error message :"post/O/2048/DIMM5/J42".
While being unable to find a list of POST error codes, I can now try to "reasonably explain" this kind of error message I got. The "Power-on Self Test" (POST) item "0/2048" obviously refer to the RAM size : total "installed" RAM was 2048 Mo (2 Go). But the "0" prefix means that zero Mo were "recognized" (or "active") from some DIMM card(s). Then the "DIMM5/J42" item pointed out to the fifth DIMM (J42) that, in my case, was the "single failure point". But, of course, as RAM is working by pairs on the PowerMac G5 bipro. if just one DIMM "failed" the associated DIMM is also "neutralized" - even if it does not "failed".
Finally, this RAM trouble makes me more comfortable to do still "simple' - but sensitive - maintenance and repair inside my Mac... while being 65 with no special skill in computer's knowledge. So I would say everybody else can succeed too.
Again, many thanks to MacLover and DaddyPaycheck for quick help ...
and Christmas Greetings to all Apple Discussion readers.

  • RAM issue, camera issue, application issue...

    Hello Team,
I have recently bought Xperia Z1, just 3days back and have started facing isse related to RAM utilisation, problem in running videos, and heating up of body while using camera even just for 10mins.
    Please help me with this.
    -Thanks in Advance
    Anuj Aggarwal

    Hi,
Is restart is the only option to free RAM? I have unpacked my phone last friday, just 4 days back and from the 1st day I am seeing almost all RAM is utilised even though there is no application installed on it other than which came by default.
I have Xperia SP as well with me, which comes up with 1GB RAM, and 786 usable, even that phone has a free RAM of 400MB or more at anytime even after 8 month of use.
I want to know, is it beause of KitKat which I have upgraded to or something else.
Also, because of this RAM trouble, I am not able to play videos, it hangs up and close back to home screen, also not able to take pics, if i have to restart phone before doing anything I only solution, then i guess we are trying to run from the issue and suggesting same old troubleshooting which we are doing from school days with our computers.

  • Unavoidable lag in After Effects

After Effects CS6 is experiencing tremendous lag for me on 2 computers. It makes it very difficult and time-consuming to get work done at all.
Both of my computers are iMacs - the first one is the 2010 model with Snow Leopard installed, 4gb of RAM; the second is the latest model (just purchased) with Mavericks installed, 8gb of RAM. For both iMacs, it only takes a very small amount of footage, effects, etc. to get it to start slowing down. I usually work on the newer one for all work-related projects, but if I'm working on something as simple as a 5 minute long .mov with no effects applied to it, I have to keep the RAM preview at quarter quality and still have to wait around 10-15 seconds for it to render a single frame. Then I have to cut down my work time to just an hour or two to prevent my machine from overheating itself.
I often like to use the paint effect to add details to my projects. I've noticed that on my new iMac, applying about 30 paint strokes on a white solid and then waiting for about a minute will cause After Effects to bring up the error message "unable to allocate memory", so I have to shut the program down. None of my other programs do this. I've used everything from Photoshop to Maya to even Minecraft with little to no RAM trouble whatsoever, but After Effects is different. It's as if it has zero tolerance for even the slightest hint of using up memory.

I updated to 11.0.4 as suggested. So far I have not noticed a great change in the render speed, but I'll keep testing it out to see what it can handle.
The paint engine in After Effects being dated is strange to me because it didn't always lag the way it does now. On my same computer about a year ago I made an empty composition (2000x1200) in which I used over 1,000 paint strokes for a single frame for 5 frames, and only on the fifth frame did it START to lag like it does now. It just started "acting up" a few months ago and has never changed back.
16 gbs of RAM may be ideal for using After Effects properly, but even so - a crisp, brand new iMac with 8 gbs should at least work decently. But for me, it works worse than my older computer.
