KT3 Ultra 2 (MS-6380E) problem

I have this MB from 2002.  Been a great MB until very recently. For 4 yrs I've had a Maxtor 6Y120P0 as a secondary hard drive on the primary IDE channel, but recently it reverted to a slower speed, "PIO Mode" (as shown in Device Manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, Primary IDE Channel, Advanced), having always previously been "Ultra DMA Mode 4".  (I have a WD Caviar WD800JB as primary drive, never any problems).  This is a major pain, writes are 10X longer..  I pretty much ruled out the drive or cable (new cable, ran DOS-native Seatools tests, all passed), so suspecting the MB.  Can someone recommend a tool or diagnostic utility which can tell me this for sure, and is this fixable?  I looked on MSI's site but can't find something for this old of MB.  I did look at some MB utilities but haven't found something that will tell me this level of information.
Very much appreciate any help...
Derek

Thanks again for the replies.  As in my post, I have a WD Caviar WD800JB as the master drive.
You mean to switch them, which would make my current slave as master? If I did that, wouldn't it try to make my current slave the C: drive? And then NOT find the Windows folder?  Or would it know to find Windows on D:?  I do want to hopefully fix this *without* re-installing Windows.
I take it you mean "uninstall" the driver (only options in DM for Primary channel are "Update Driver", "Uninstall").  If so, that would delete for BOTH drives on the channel correct?  Would Windows be able to re-install the driver even though its own drive's driver was deleted?  (I guess my experience in this particular area is a bit limited .

  • MSI KT3 Ultra ARU Mem timing problems?

As experienced by myself as well as Maximum PC Magazine during testing. Using high quality memory such as Samsung PC2700 DDR on the MSI KT3 Ultra ARU, if you set the cas latency timings to the most agressive settings, next time you try to boot into Windows, your OS crashes and the registry gets corrupted. Also the board actually interprets CAS 2.5 memory as CAS 2. I am sure a BIOS update will fix this problem, however who else has had this problems?

  • MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU power supply problem

    Hello !
I am a lucky owner of MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU motherboard but have one problem. My power supply Fortron (FSP Group) 300-GT 300W seems to have some kind of incompatibility with this motherboard. In my case, the computer can't be shutted down by software. With BIOS version 2.5 it was impossible to shut it down with button too. With 2.6 it is possible to turn the computer off by button but software shutdown still don't work. PSU is working on ALL other boards I have tested so far normally. Somewhere in discussions (not in this forums) I discovered that also some kind of weird sounds occurs with Fortron supply on this board and that it is incompatible. Have anyone some clues to solve this PSU problem ? I am not able momentally to buy some other kind of PSU because Fortron is the only brand from higher category to obtain, so I would be like to solve this.....
    Thanks for any info !

PSU is powering Athlon XP 1700+ processor, the other big power consumer is GeForce4 Ti 4200 GPU. I am not able read currents for specific voltage outputs, so I am not able to measure whole power consumption. Computer is working normally, it is NOT overclocked (but it is stable overclocked too) and the only problem is PSU shutdown by software (win & linux, both of them has this problem). From BIOS v2.6 it is possible to shutdown the computer by power button. If it is tried by software, computer resets itself and three beeps occurs.

Did you try to put the MSI cdrom in there and wait upto 2 minutes until the menu appears?
Well I use to have a CreativeLive sound card from the begining so at the begining the sound on  board was disable. But now I have a second computer and I put the creative on that one and I want to enable the sound, this is the point when the big surprise show up.
I have 2 MSI cd's one from this motherbordand one from an older one. When I lunch this cd on the driver section of the autorun I have only a Realtek Network adapter (which I have one already instaled), but if I browse the CD I can find a sound/via/4****? directory with a setup file. If I lanch the install it says "you don't have a Via Cipset" well it's a preaty BIG via on it. If I use the old cd I have 3 options one via cipset drivers 1 realtek network and one Via Audio Drivers but bought via drivers are disable like they are already instaled. If I lanch the Via Audio Drivers says "The VIA chipset is disable please run BIOS and Enable it" or somthing like that, so as I see it it's a BIG problem with the BIOS or the Hardware.
sorry for this to long story

  • KT3 Ultra USB D-Bracket problem

This is the problem: I connected the D-bracket to my KT3 Ultra board. But it doesn't work. Al least, none of the devices I connected to it (printer and camera) are found or seen by Windows. Windows does see a removable device but not the camera. Also the software I use for the camera can't find it. The bracket did work on a older board with Windows ME. But now it doesn't.
    Do I oversee something?
Board: MSI KT3 Ultra (with latest BIOS revision)
OS: Windows XP home (with all the updates)

This is interesting. I have the same board, also running WinXP Professional with SP1 on it.
As long as I don't use a Bios later than Ver. 5.4 the USB ports work fine and connected devices are recognized and installed correctly.
However, installing any newer BIOS (5.5 - 5.7) will make the USB ports unusable. The (embedded) USB root ports stay installed or get automaticall re-installed when I remove them, but no device will be recognized and installed correctly any more. They will only be recognized as "unknown device" and that was it. When going back to BIOS 5.4, everything is ok again.
Since BIOS 5.6 is required to operate 2600+ processors this is extremely bad.
I would recommend that you try with an older BIOS (e.g. 5.4) and let me know whether you get the same results.
    Heh...
I'v just gone through hell strugling with the USB on my KT3 Ultra under WinXP, untill I got here... fortunaltely. After I flashed my Amibios to 5.7 or something all USB went dead and I couldn't believe that updating something makes it worse... but guess thats the case. Well I'm happy they keep the older versions available but still these (known) bugs should be on somekind of messageboard so you woundn't have to search all places wrecking your nerve along on the process. In addition I'm not a big fan of flashing bios every now and then.. don't think u are either. I think This forum really helps people ....!!

  • KT3-Ultra AUD 3 beep problem

    first things first
    MSI KT3-Ultra AUD
    AMD 1.4 ghz T-bird
    ATi Radeon 8500LE
    256 MB Muskin RAM
I just thrw this computer together, the processor worked on my previous system.
The D-LEDs on the back show the Memory to be the problem. Prior to sending the ram back, I want to see if anything else might be the culprit.
The PSU puts out 180w on the +3 and +5 wires combined.

    steps I took:
    Cleared CMOS via Jumper
    Adjusted CPU FSB to 133
set date and time to correct settings
    set boot sequence
    reboot
    Magical RGRR on the Dleds
    Cleared CMOS again
    Flashed BIOS
    Flashed BIOS again
    Reboot
    had to modify CMOS settings
    Modified CPU FSB ONLY
    Reboot
    RGRR on D-LED
So we know the RAM works, we Know the Board works, we know the RAM + the Board do not always work.
Contacting newegg right now, will go up to PC3000 Mushkin Ram whihc has shown to have no issues what so ever with the board.
My recomendation is to trust Mushkin's website and not use thier 2700 Ram with the KT3-ULTRA-ARU.  Any helpful throughts or suggestions as I will not be able to mail the thing back to newegg until this weekend.
Thank you to the board members for thier help. Thank you to MSI for a board that I hope to one day enjoy.

    Hi!
    This is what I've got.

    Promise 100 IDE-controller
    Creative Geforce MX 440

    NEC ND-1300 DVD
    And the configuration:
    IDE1: Seagate (Master)
    IDE2: WD1800BG (Cabel Select)
IDE3(Raid1): Maxtor 6LO80J4 (Master) and Maxtor 6Y080L0 (Slave) raided as an single drive
    IDE4(Raid2): WD2000JB (Cable Select)
    IDE5(IDE-controller1):
    IDE6(IDE-controller2): NEC ND-1300 (Master) and Lite-on LTR-40125W (Slave)
    And the Software:
I've updated all the software drivers so I've got the newest and I'm currently runnign Win2k SP3 with almost every patch installed on it.
    And finally the problem:
When I've hook my WD2000JB to the on-board raid everything seems to be working normaly. The bios finds the drive and makes a new array. Win2k boots up and finds the drive and I can create an partition. But when I've try to format it it the computer starts to freeze for a while and then acts like normal again. The HDD-led blinks as it should during the "normal" time, but when the comp. freezes it stops blinking. The formatation stops at 7% and the HDD-led stops lighting. I don't get an error eventhough it was several hours since it stoped. And the formatation takes like 30min for 1%.
When I connect the WD2000JB to the IDE3 I can format it and it acts just like normal. I even did a full system test with the System tool found on Western Digitals support site and it didn't find any errors. But when move it to the raid-IDE the errors return. I've get Error reading / writing to disk and when I've did a chkdsk I've got the "Coudn't use Device) so I did a scandisk and it found very very many errors so it completly ereased everything that was on it.
And when I've run Western Digitals program again i've get an error (Disk error read/writing) error code: 0113.
Can it be that the Western Disk doesn't work well with Raid? I've haven't heard anything about that, so...
    Best regars,
    Mathias

I've had similar problems where my system becomes very unstable at higher bus speeds. Installing Windows XP simply didn't work very good. However, I have ordered a new PSU today as a solution to this problem. Basically, CPUs and video cards are much more demanding and the more devices you have in your computer the more power you're going to need. I recommend purchasing the Enermax EG465P-VE (FCA) 450W ATX PS. It has a higher amperage rating and will most likely solve your problem.
Check your PSU and your bus speed settings...

  • MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU + All In Wonder Problem

I've got a odd problem that is related to putting my machine into Standby.  If I do so the night before, then wake the system up in the morning I see issues that point to memory corruption or driver failure or a conflict with the VIA chipset.  Outlook Express will lock up on launch, the ATI digital VCR app will either not launch or fail to shutdown if it does.  I clean installed Windows XP, then updated it with XP SP1.  Of note is that the video card works ok with the OS supplied driver but if you install the ATI drivers (which are needed to make the TV and Digital VCR work) this stuff happens.  I have reinstalled several times so I am pretty sure this isn't just a messy config issue.  I've had bad experiences similar to this with VIA chipset mobos in the past so this doesn't surprise me.
Anyone ever see this?  Know of a fix?

  • KT3 Ultra problems.

So I've been experiencing some oc problems with my MSI KT3 Ultra. (Rig in Sig) I've been trying to get my AGKGA AXP 1800+ higher than 1.67 without success for weeks now. I thought maybe that the new v5.6 BIOS for the KT3 Ultra would fix my problems. Boy was I wrong.
Upon installation of the new BIOS, everything goes perfectly without interuption or problem. I proceed to restart the computer after installation is completed.
Much to my surprise, the computer will not POST. On the D-Bracket diagnostic LEDs, it gives me the message that there is something wrong with the memory.
    1  X(    3
    2  X(   X(  4
I tried switching banks, still no post. I tried resetting the BIOS, still no post.  I also tried a working stick of Crucial pc2100 (ddr266), but the same problem still exists.
Have any of you had this problem with the v5.6 BIOS? Do you think that the BIOS was hosed somehow?
All I know is that this problem is making me crazy. I think after this bout with my KT3 Ultra, it is time to replace it. I've had way too many headaches to warrant keeping it.
    Thank you for your help...:P

    Hi again,
Agree with "Wonkanoby", should remove the battery before shorting the CMOS reset jumper. Have to be careful when you remove it though, can't come into contact with your skin otherwise the various fatty acids contained on your skin will ultimately cause problems. Just use a latex surgical glove or similar or wrap your fingers in gladwrap, just as good.
By removing the battery you shouldn't need to have the jumper on for more than 5 seconds to completely drain the charge in CMOS. After that, remove the shorting jumper to it's storage position and replace the battery then follow the restoration procedure to normal to allow startup, etc. Best of luck,
    Dimal.

  • Ram Problem With KT3 Ultra

    Hi Guys,
I have posted on here before.
    I have a kt3 ultra mobo.
The problem i have is when playing games the system locks up and i have to hard restart.
I have followed advice from this board the the faq ant mobo bios set up which sadly has not solved the problem.
Very strange but in the pc i have two x 256 meg ddr ram.
If i take either stick out the pc plays games perfectly. This is frustrating as both sticks work fine on their own but not together.
    ANY IDEAS ? ;(

    Hi,
Sometimes it happens that sticks just won't work together....
You might want to swap one of the sticks with a friend to see if the problem is gone...
