KT3 Ultra + v5.7 BIOS -- weird behaviour

I have KT3 Ultra with newly flashed 5.7 BIOS + XP2100, 512 333DDR, Club3D 9700np, WindowsXP.
I had some start-up troubles after installing 9700np (8 beeps and no signal), which forced me to reset the system every time after power up to load windowsXP. So, I decided to flash the BIOS. Now, system boots up with no problems, but I've encountered a new problem.
Pressing ctrl+alt+del doesn't bring up the TASK MANAGER. All I get is the CPU USAGE window. Thus, processes, applications etc., those are gone. This means, basically, that I can't shut down programs that are not responding (not that I need to do that very often, but still...). Right clicking on the task bar and selecting TM shows me the same CPU USAGE window.
In addition, IE's pop-up windows that launch external programs (like some sites offering mp3 ring tones that I play with Winamp) cause IE to crash. Never happened before.
All this happened right after I flashed the BIOS. Any ideas?!?! Should I go back to 5.5 that I had before?
Thanks,
Thomas

This is pobubly off topic, but since the title is KT3 Ultra and Bios 5.7 I decided to ask here so as not to create a duplicate thread.
I to flashed my Bios to 5.7, but my problem is as follows.
After flash rebooted my computer as instructed, entered bios and verified all my configurations.  Rebooted again.  Windows came up fine but all text was garbled and unreadable.  Reflashed 5.7 (thinking it didn't take).  Again same problems.  Had to flash back to 5.6 inorder to straighten out.
Bas any ideas?
Thomstucks:: Sorry to hear about your problem, and for jumping in on your thread.  Have you tried 5.6?

  • KT3-Ultra 5.7 BIOS.....

    Hi,
The KT3-Ultra (-ARU) 5.7 BIOS will be released official this week...
Don't expect much changes over the last BIOS as there are very little.
As these are the only improvements:
Fixed AMD 2600+(266MHz FSB) CPU shown incorrectly
Fixed ATi8500 AGP card cannot be used

We have to wait until somebody tries it :D
    Hi,
I know, it's only a bios trouble, infact on the MoBo page (at CPU support section) are tested processors till +2800/333mhz without problems, and my T-Bred goes easy at 166mhz. Barton have only 256k plus L2 than T-Bred...but why MSI dosen't make a bios with the official support to 333mhz? The KT3Ultra2 was reported officially (in old news from MSI) with 333mhz support. I'm very disappointed about this...  :(

  • KT3 Ultra 2 funny bios

I have a strange situation here. I have been running a XP1700+ palamino unlocked at 9.5x190 (1810) (max ram timings)  with the original bios which was v5.5. I decided to pick up 2400+ so before installing it I flashed the bios to v5.6  which is supposed to support it. It does. Tried overclocking a little with it locked got to 2325@155fsb. Over that unstable.
So I decided to unlock the 2400+. Put back in and it was unlocked, so start going up. 12.5 x160 fsb keeping it around 2000mhz. Totally unstable.Drop fsb to155 and its stable. Try to use the 15 multiplier (stock speed) Boots at 933(7x). Try 14 mult. @666(5x) useless multipliers. Now it seems I'm being limited by the fsb, strange because 1700 would run @190fsb( everything the same except CPU and Bios).
I figured I must have got a bad Cpu.So I pull it out to see if something  else may have gone bad, and put 1700 back in. Suprise!! max stable fsb 155. .
After Trying slow timings in bios and everything ,still no go. SO I flashed back to bios v5.5. Reboot we're up to 173fsb .Ran tests over and over.Stable.. Better but what happened to 190!!!
So now I put the 2400 back in unlocked and works fine up to 173fsb BUT I still have a max mult of 12.5  and max fsb 173 .
Is the bios these boards ship with different than the ones they have posted on their site?
If anyone has any info, it would be appreciated.

I have been clearing CMOS each time. I understand that It would seem to be hardware but not sure why I can once again go higher when I flash back to older bios (not as high as original but higher than v5.6) Also with the 1700 the bios was the only change.
The other thing with the multipliers of 14 and 15 not giving the correct result also bothers me. I know it can do a 15x because it does with cpu locked but when unlocked no go. Is this a limit of the KT333 the KT3 Ultra 2 or a bug in the Bios.
One last thing there is an option 12.5/13 but as far as I can tell choosing it only give 12.5 .Is there some way to get 13x ?

  • KT3 Ultra USB D-Bracket problem

This is the problem: I connected the D-bracket to my KT3 Ultra board. But it doesn't work. Al least, none of the devices I connected to it (printer and camera) are found or seen by Windows. Windows does see a removable device but not the camera. Also the software I use for the camera can't find it. The bracket did work on a older board with Windows ME. But now it doesn't.
    Do I oversee something?
Board: MSI KT3 Ultra (with latest BIOS revision)
OS: Windows XP home (with all the updates)

This is interesting. I have the same board, also running WinXP Professional with SP1 on it.
As long as I don't use a Bios later than Ver. 5.4 the USB ports work fine and connected devices are recognized and installed correctly.
However, installing any newer BIOS (5.5 - 5.7) will make the USB ports unusable. The (embedded) USB root ports stay installed or get automaticall re-installed when I remove them, but no device will be recognized and installed correctly any more. They will only be recognized as "unknown device" and that was it. When going back to BIOS 5.4, everything is ok again.
Since BIOS 5.6 is required to operate 2600+ processors this is extremely bad.
I would recommend that you try with an older BIOS (e.g. 5.4) and let me know whether you get the same results.
    Heh...
I'v just gone through hell strugling with the USB on my KT3 Ultra under WinXP, untill I got here... fortunaltely. After I flashed my Amibios to 5.7 or something all USB went dead and I couldn't believe that updating something makes it worse... but guess thats the case. Well I'm happy they keep the older versions available but still these (known) bugs should be on somekind of messageboard so you woundn't have to search all places wrecking your nerve along on the process. In addition I'm not a big fan of flashing bios every now and then.. don't think u are either. I think This forum really helps people ....!!

    Hello out there.
I have a real complicated matter with my Kt3 Ultra board.
Used to work fine, but after I flashed it with the latest BIOS (5.7), the board has this strange behaviour: when I clear the CMOS, the board boots up, when I change & save the settings, the board does not "come to life"(black screen & beeper silent).
It has also this weird problem: it shows garbage charaters on the voltage setting of the CPU. Instead of voltages (i.e. 1.750 etc. etc.) I have only "scrambled" strings.
I had MANY difficulties in upgrading the BIOS because the AMI-flashing utility kept telling me "bios protection enabled) (but there was NO bios-protect setting in the previous bios - I checked a zillion times)...but after trying with different revisions finally I made it.
I already tried everything (re-flashed older bios-es etc. etc.)and I'm starting to feel beat ... if you have any advice, please le me know.
It would be really SAD to put this great board in the garbage-dump....
      Bye,
    Wyk'03

im having problems with this board as well,
i had no problems with the flash,
    i did this...
    boot to win me floppy,
copy the flash files to ramdrive, flashed to latest bios..
now windows hangs when i have my ac97 audio enabled in bios...
    I WANT MY AC97!
hmmm can you get to a dos prompt from a boot disk?
try re-flashing with 1.0 again and then disable the cmos virus protection thingy, and yes it was there it was in the 1.0 bios on the main screen.

  • MSI KT3 Ultra ARU 5.7 BIOS and SoudBlaster Cards - Audigy

I have flashed my BIOS to 5.7 Version and my sound card start to make a lot of noise (crackling) when play AC3 or DVD. If you dont want to use the new AMD CPU 333 FSB you dont need to flash the BIOS - I have Flashed to 5.6 again but, if you want to use a 333 FSB CPU you can flash the BIOS to version 5.7 and if have sound problems use the PCI latency patch for VIA chipsets.
VIA chipset MotherBoard owners who have through all of the above and still have sound problems with their Soundblaster cards, might want to look into the PCI latency patch for VIA chipsets - get it here:
    http://www.georgebreese.com/net/software/
(scroll down the page there just a little to get to it).
There's also a similar page about resolving sound problems on Via chipset based computers here:

Since my chip is an unlocked, I cannot easily run it at the default, but I can underclock it. At 100x6.0=600mhz, USB does not work, as well as 100x12.5. Same with 133x6.0 and 133x12.5. It appears to make no difference underclocking or overclocking.
I downloaded the right BIOS listed on MSI's KT3 Ultra-ARU page. I don't think the BIOSes are different anyway, since the same files, changelog, and etc are also listed for the Ultra-2 board.
A thing to note, that this is the onboard VIA-controller USB ports doing this. My Ultra-ARU's NEC-controller USB 2.0 ports work fine in both Win2k and Linux if I hook my mouse and keyboard up in those. This is not an ideal solution for me though.

  • KT3 ULTRA-2 BIOS 5.5 OR 5.6 ?HI

    Hi. I have a kt3 ultra-2 that had a 2000+ cpu.
I upgraded the cpu to a 2600+ that runs at 333. So i set the fsb to 166. It works just fine. my question is.
My bios is 5.5 and 5.6 says it supports the 2600+.
Do i need the 5.6 bios? Is ther new settings in it for a 2600+. And does live update 2 really work right with ntfs and xp. thank you for the help )

    Hi,
No, you can stay with 5.5 if you like....
5.6 won't add settings, if 5.5 is running fine, leave it alone..
Yes, LiveUpdate works with XP and NTFS.

  • KT3 Ultra 2 - Bios V5.7 - Problem

    Hello,
I don't know if anyone else has tried updating the KT3 Ultra 2 to the new V5.7 BIOS ?
I tried and got load of error messages on the screen, Chipset isn't support etc ROM Size Unknown ....
I have V5.6 on right now.
I have tried Live Update, it doesn't show new bios and also tried another floppy with files on and also downloaded the file again.
    No win !

I did not have that particular problem but I found others
I was able to load new 5.7 bios but after I did it took board about 2 minutes to boot.
The part where the XP logo screen is supposed to come up took about 2 minutes.  There is no HD (light) activity and then all of a sudden you hear harddrive and XP logo screen comes up and it boots fine.
The same situation arose with Bios 5.6 but I was able to fix that by changing MPS table from Default 1.4 to 1.1.  The XP screen would take about 2 minutes to boot so I tried changing settings in bios and finally came to the MPS entry and changed it to 1.1 and the board booted fine.  It took about 3-5 sec for the XP logo scrreen to pop up after the last bios screen that would show all the Devices, IRQ's ect...
Changing the MPS to 1.1 in the 5.7 bios did not fix the long boot problem like it did in 5.6.
I can live with the 5.6 bios but the CPU halt command in the 5.7 bios drops temps about 20 degrees F and that is great.  I hope this problem can be fixed in 5.7 so I can utilize the CPU Halt command.

  • KT3 Ultra BIOS problem + question

    Hi
after switchin on the CPU Halt command detection. My PC beeps 3 times after shutting down. D-LED says memory problem. When I turn off the PSU and after a while turn it on, everything is OK and PC boots normally. Does anyone know the reason of the beeping??
Question: has somebody tried (somebody very rich to afford buying Barton) Barton (or T-Bred FSB333) processor on KT3 Ultra??
    thx a lot  )

    Hi,
Switching on CPU HALT Command will make your system unstable. That's the message of the beeps.
You should be able to improve this by using a better PSU. Otherwise, there is no reason of using CPU HALT command as there are many software CPU Coolers you can get.

  • MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU power supply problem

    Hello !
I am a lucky owner of MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU motherboard but have one problem. My power supply Fortron (FSP Group) 300-GT 300W seems to have some kind of incompatibility with this motherboard. In my case, the computer can't be shutted down by software. With BIOS version 2.5 it was impossible to shut it down with button too. With 2.6 it is possible to turn the computer off by button but software shutdown still don't work. PSU is working on ALL other boards I have tested so far normally. Somewhere in discussions (not in this forums) I discovered that also some kind of weird sounds occurs with Fortron supply on this board and that it is incompatible. Have anyone some clues to solve this PSU problem ? I am not able momentally to buy some other kind of PSU because Fortron is the only brand from higher category to obtain, so I would be like to solve this.....

PSU is powering Athlon XP 1700+ processor, the other big power consumer is GeForce4 Ti 4200 GPU. I am not able read currents for specific voltage outputs, so I am not able to measure whole power consumption. Computer is working normally, it is NOT overclocked (but it is stable overclocked too) and the only problem is PSU shutdown by software (win & linux, both of them has this problem). From BIOS v2.6 it is possible to shutdown the computer by power button. If it is tried by software, computer resets itself and three beeps occurs.

  • KT3 Ultra, have to clear CMOS everyboot?

Hey guys I have a weird problem...everytime (including the first time I installed the hardware) I restart or powerdown the computer, it won't turn on again unless I reset the CMOS by the jumper.  I'm thinking this is just a faulty motherboard, but any ideas?

    Hi,
I just worked through a similar problem with a KT3 Ultra
MS-6380E board and an Athlon XP 2000+ processor.  Every time I booted and configured the BIOS it worked fine until I cycled power.  Every time I tried to turn it on - nothing, no fans or anything. I was also thinking bad motehr board, bad processor, bad BIOS, etc. I tripped over an article (I forget if it was here or on AMDs site) that discussed an issue of the motherboard not properly recognizing a processor.
Apparently the MSI board identifies the Athlon processor based on clock speed (someone can correct me here) - when my system booted it was saying I had an Athlon XP 1600+ rather than the 2000+.  Anyhow, the solution requires updating the BIOS to the latest rev. What you need to do is :
    1. after clearing the BIOS (this needs to be done for about an hour - not mentioned in the manual) power up your system.
    2. Enter the BIOS setup and set your date and time only then exit and save your changes.
    3. Go through any system install/updates you need to do (disk format, OS load, etc.).
    4. Load the MSI live update utility and connet to the Internet.
    5. Run the update utility and you will get a selection of results.
    6. Run the BIOS update (you will need a 3.5" floppy disk).
    7. Following this make sure you also have all of the lates drivers installed.
    8. Now your ready for the final test!  Reboot and go into the BIOS setup.  Set your FSB clock to what it needs to be (in my case 133MHz), exits and save.  The system should reboot without any problem now.  :D
If you cant make it to #3 you have a different problem than the one I had.  If thats the case - Sorry, I don't have any pointers.
Some of this should be in the manual but isn't - Issues of not recognizing the processor, how long it takes to clear BIOS, etc.
    Hope this helps
