KT3 Ultra2 (MS-6380E) and Barton 2600+

Hello,
I have a MSI KT3 Ultra2 (MS-6380E).
I recently changed my CPU from AMD Athlon XP 1600+ (Palonimo, FSB 266) to AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (Barton, FSB 333).
I have the latest BIOS - v5.7.
The new CPU (Barton) appers as 2500+ not 2600+.
I read on MSI website that my mainboard supports CPUs up to 3000+ ...
What should I do ?
PS : The CPU is OK, I tried with another one; and YES - the FSB is set to 166.
Thanks in advance,
OJi.

You know, we've seen this before with Barton XP2600+ on older KT333 and KT400 MSI boards.  Is anyone else using a Barton XP2600+ on an older MSI KT333 or KT400?
I purchased some XP2600+ processors almost a year ago (30 units) that I had been told were the older Thoroughbreds, but 27 of them turned out to be XP2600+ Thortons (AXDC2600DKV3C).  Due to the enlongated core size and 256KB cache, they were indeed Thortons.  However, the markings on the processor made me suspicious as they had Thoroughbred revision/stepping codes.
So I contacted AMD processor support, which initially told me the processors "looked ok" but that they couldn't be certain.  That didn't make me any more comfortable, so after a lengthy process I was finally able to get my case referred to AMD Security Group which investigates remarked processors.  It took them three months to get back with me, but I did receive a final determination:  AMD never made XP2600 based on Thorton, not even for grey market customers.  These were remarked processors.  There is a thread over on AMD forums about it.
Upon learning of AMD's conclusion, my supplier took them back, explaining their "Asian" source had assured them they were grey market processors.  I also know they had a fairly large quantity, and around the same time, news of AMD remarking operation busts in Taiwan were making headlines.
I'm wondering if MSI has confused the Barton XP2600+ for a Thorton?  It would seems so, as AMD claims it never produced an XP2600+ Thorton, for anyone.

  • BIOS Settings Problem on KT3 Ultra2 MS-6380E with Barton 3000+(FSB333)

Well, I finally got my Barton 3000+ with 333 MHz FSB and installed it yesterday in my MSI KT3 Ultra2 Mainboard....
    System Before changing anything:
    PSU: DTK  400 W
    +3.3 V / 22 A
    +5 V / 35 A
    +12 V / 15 A
    -5 V / 0.5 A
    -12 V / 0.8 A
    +5 V VSB / 3 A
So that should make up 400 W as far as I know, my total System drain should be around 300-350 W so even if it would not suffice 400 W it should run the system ?
    Mainboard: KT3 Ultra 2 (BIOS v5.7)
CPU: AMD XP 2100 FSB 133 MHz
    RAM: 1.536 MB, 3x512 MB Infineon PC3200 (400MHz) CL 3-3-3-8 @400MHz, Cl2.5-3-3-7@333Mhz, 2-2-2-6@266MHz
VGA: MSI RX-9800 Pro 128 MB
    DVD/CD-R/RW-Combo: Plextor PX-708 (Firmware 1.08)
    CD-R/RW: TEAC CD-W540E (Firmware 1.0K)
Storage: Western Digital WD800BB (80 GB) (Firmware 17.07W17)
    USB-Storage: Maxtor 4 K080 H4 (80 GB)
Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 172T with Driver Version 1.0
Printer: HP Deskjet 970Cxi with Original HP Driver Version 4.3
OS: Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4
BIOS Settings: SDRAM 1T Command: "Disabled" It won't work stable with 3 RAM's in it with that setting, but that I did know before.
    CPU Fast Command: "Ultra"
System was running stable for nearly 2 years with this Configuration:
    So now it goes:
First I changed the CPU form my old AMD XP 2100+ to the new Barton 3000 + with its new Arctic Cool Copper Silent 2TC.
Then I went into BIOS and raised the FSB to 166 MHz, which should be the correct one, or do I have to put 167 MHz in there (since 166.666666 MHz is rounded to 167)?
Then I exited and watched the restart...but it didn't start-up it only got me 3 long beeps at the HOST.
After some whining and beating I plugged out anything and cleared CMOS and started the whole thing again:
    System after Clearing CMOS:
    Mainboard: KT3 Ultra 2 (BIOS v5.7)
CPU: AMD XP 3000+  FSB 100 MHz
RAM: 1x512 MB Infineon PC3200 CL 2-3-3-7 (BIOS setting CAS Latency by "SPD")
Storage: Western Digital WD800BB (80 GB) (Firmware 17.07W17)
Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 172T with Driver Version 1.0
OS: Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4
With all Default settings, the Computer boots up, and is correctly Recognized as a Barton 1300 MHz.
When increasing FSB to 133 MHz it is correctly displayed as a Barton 2200+
    NOW...
...after adding one BIOS setting after another I narrowed the problem down to the "CPU Fast Command (decode)" Function...if set to Ultra it does not boot-up when running 166 MHz FSB, it does not even let me into BIOS. I have to clear CMOS and restart from scratch again...
Is this normal and expectable with a Barton 3000+ running at the native 166 MHz FSB or not ?
Since my system before was running on "Ultra" with my old AMD XP 2100+.
There is only one more thing I noticed, the CPU V-Core is shown to be only 1.616 V (setting on "Auto" but it should be 1.65 V ? Should I increase the V-Core to 1.675 V in order to get closer to 1.65 V or shouldn't I worry about ?
Thanks for any Input you can give me on the problem.
    Iscaran

Iscaran, you are indeed correct in the statement which you made

This setting can be set to fast/ultra on the KT3 Ultra2 when using PC2100 ram running at 266. However, when using PC2700 ram running at 333, this setting MUST be set to normal for the satisfactory operation of the board. I know that you have PC3200 ram actually installed but it is only running at 333.

    Yes, absolutely normal

How are you measuring this ie Bios or o/s utility? Not unknown that these are incorrect. However, if you feel unhappy about this, try setting the V-core manually to 1.65v and check what this gives.

So 3.3 V x 22 A gives 72.6 W, that could be really a little cutting the edge. Could that cause the board to not respond when setting the "CPU Fast Command" to "Ultra" ?
Getting a more powerful psu will not likely cure this well documented problem.
However, this board mostly draws power from the 3.3 & 5v rails. The 12v is mostly used to power HDD, optical and fans. When you consider that 128Mb of ram draws about 8-10w from the 5v rail and you have a total of 1.5Gb that adds up to 96-120W of juice just for the memory alone. This board will beep at you at o/s level when it's running underpowered but my opinion is the same as osnavi's your 3.3v & 5v rails are too low. Also what is combined 3.3v & 5v wattage. What kind of reading do you get on monitoring utilities.
By the way I have as you can see from my dets below the same board and cpu as you and when I changed from a XP2000 Palomino with PC2100 ram to XP3000 Barton and PC3200, I changed the 'Fast Command' setting from 'Fast' to 'Normal'
Hope this helps, enjoy the board

  • !! Help !! MSI KT3 Ultra2 (MS-6380E) No BIOS Prompt!!

Hi Guys, this may be really elementary to you folks, but I want to change the boot order in bios, so that my Acronis True Image boot disc will be recognized, but when I start my machine, there is NO message about pressing ANYTHING to enter into bios.  I've tried delete and esc anyway, to no avail, and I'm about to restart and try F2, but the screens flash past pretty quick, but not too quickly to see that there is NO prompt to enter BIOS at all..... is that expected, problematic??
Can I download a driver or something that will make the "press [ ] to enter setup" or "press [ ] to enter BIOS" prompt appear?
Failing that, is there anyway to force the system into BIOS without a prompt??

Are you using a PS/2 or USB keyboard? If USB try a PS/2 KB. Have you tried rapidly pressing 'Delete' right after power on? By that I mean don't immediately hold it down but press & release multiple times.
Good tip about the ps/2 keyboard, not that I've tried it yet, but I will tomorrow after I get my hands on one, and I'll let you know.  Thanks for the tip..... but I wonder, shouldn't it at least TELL me that there exists an option to go into BIOS?  Even if it doesn't there must be some way in I guess, so I'll try this tomorrow.  Thanks again.....

  • KT3-Ultra2 (MS-6380E) PC3200

Okey once again problem with this board!
I decided to upgrade the comp a bit.
From Barton XP2500+ to Barton XP3000+
    From 3x256MB DDR PC2700 to 2x512MB PC3200
Now ofc I know the board only supports 333MHz FSB.
I need the FSB to be 166MHz(x2=333MHz) for the Barton to run at the proper speed, I have never been able to get the multiplier to work, probably cause the CPU is locked.
Now the newly bought PC3200 refuses to run at a lower speed then 200MHz(x2=400MHz), No matter what I do, User settings, set SPD to HCLOCK. Dosn't matter. As soon as I insert a third DIMM, a PC2700 they obey my rules and works fine at 333MHz, but this board, cant handle 3 DIMMs at 333MHz, running MEMtest86, phat chance.
Using one of the PC3200 with the PC2700 works fine.
Using the second PC3200 with the PC2700 works fine.
But I cant set it up to work with only the two PC3200 cause they wont run at 333MHz, and I cant have all 3 DIMMs cause the board gives me the finger.
Ive also tried using one of the PC3200 and two PC2700, same thing, 3 DIMMs dosnt work.
So my question is, how can I force my PC3200 to run on 166MHz(x2=333MHz)?
    Mainboard MSI KT3-Ultra2 (6380E ver1.0 with BIOS 5.7)
CPU AMD Barton XP3000+ (333MHz version)
Graphic-card Powercolor ATI Radeon 9800 PRO (No OC atm)
    PSU Chieftec (HPC-360-202) 340W, 5V 35A, 3.3V 28A, 12V 17A.
Whole bunch of memories that pass the test when set up properly
    4x512MB DDR PC3200 TwinMOS (matched 2 and 2)
    2x256MB DDR PC2700 Nanya (matched)
    1x256MB DDR PC2700 KVM

Frobe, lets be clear about this. Your rig ran fine with the set up which you described namely 2500 barton and 3x256mb pc2700 Ram. Is that correct?.
You now upgraded to xp3000 (in you sig you say xp3200) and are now using 2 sticks of pc3200 ram. Is this now correct?
With the new cpu and ram your rigs posts and works but you say that your new memory is detected at 400. Where is this showing 400 are you looking in the Bios and it shows HClck+33? Or is this by way of some software utility.
This board can only handle 333 mem by default, I have pc3200 mem in my pc (see my sig) and the bios runs it at HClck speed. There is no Hclck+33 option available.
This board is fussy about all 3 ram slots being used slots 1&3 work best as slots 1 & 2 share the MA channel to the northbridge whereas slot 3 uses the MB channel.
Try Running Fast command at 'Normal' (in advanced chipset>dram control) if you are not already.
You should have no trouble whatsoever running an xp3000 (333) together with pc3200 memory as described. The only reason I have only 1 stick of 512mb in my pc is that I dual boot with windows 98se and it does not work (with98) otherwise have run 1gb of ram with no issues.
What I would also suggest is that you clear the bios and check the clear nvram in the bios as well as follow Fredrik Åsenius advise namely to change the mem from spd to user.
    Hope this helps

  • KT3 ultra2 MS-6380 and my Geforce 4 ti4400

Hello everyone! The other day I started up my computer and all I got was various lines of horizontal and vertical colors. After I would restart it, it would start up normally without a problem. Now I can't even get it to start up normally. I decided to put in my mom's voodoo 3 card and that works just fine. So then I decided to put my Geforce 4 into my mom's computer. Her computer consist of a P3 450 with 256 SDR ram. My card works just fine in her computer with no problems that I was having on mine. I have tried new drivers for my video card and motherboard chipset. I have also reformatted my computer and that had no effect. Also, when I start up now, my moniter doesn't even turn on, like the computer isn't sending anything out. Once I restart it again though, it does not do this...usually.
    Computer specs:
    KT3 ultra2 MS-6380
    AMD Athlon 1800+
    Geforce 4 ti4400
    512 DDR Ram
    Western Digital 80GB HD

read a good for once bit on toms hardware
revue of 21 low end power supplies
some cheap generics have nothing to stop them trying to supply over their rated currents, until they go bang
i can only guess its starting to give up the ghost

  • HELP --- KT3 ultra2- aka 6380E dead??

    Hello all,
I have a 6380E that I think suddenly have had a problem:-( 2 days ago was working fine..
I have dismantled  all components: ram, cpu, hd, agp video card and so on.
I checked ram on other pc (good), tryed another working PSU, tryed another Video card and a pci one too.
Now I think there is a problem on the mainboard.
When I turn it on, fan works but I dont hear any beep when I try to boot wothout CPU or ram, is it notmal? (i think no
I checked the D-Bracket too to get some infos but It have a strange configuration : I have led 1: off (no light), led 2 :red, led 3 and 4 :green, anyone knows what does it mean?
Obviously I treyd to reset cmos by jumper and removing battery for 1 hour with the same behaviour.
    Thank in advance

I couldnt make it boot from USB sticks though they were good (bootable) with my newer rig.You get all kind of errors about not finding differerent files.Switching USB Legacy on/off will do no good
In fact i couldnt install Windows 7 RC booting from DVD Rom ,i had to start the installer form within XP.
I think it simply has older boot routines and thats it.
Strange! the manual said it is possible (page 3-9) but I tryed before without  success. You have the last bios?

By the way ,if you want to use a SATA expansion card you wont be able to boot from it with a RAID Rom on the card, you will need an IDE Emulation one.
Scuse me. What does it mean "you wont be able to boot from it with a RAID Rom on the card, you will need an IDE Emulation one." ?
I was planning to buy a SATA Pci adapter ( VIA VT6421 chipset) but I need to boot from the SATA drive and to use Linux and FreeBSD .(No Raid)
    It will not work?

Anyway this board is concret , running since 2002 september without a hitch.
I agree , the only problems are CPU  of that time that needs very noisy fans :-(

  • Kt3 ultra2 ARU 6380e won't run 133 fsb

    hello everyone
    i'm an unhappy owner of a kt3Ultra2.
maybe someone can help me with a problem i'm having. i can't seem to increase the front side bus speed to the necessary speed  so that my AMD processor registers at a 1800+ 1533mhz.  the bus is set at 100mhz in the BIOS and setting to 133 causes system instability and crashing.  windows never loads and the computer clicks off even within the BIOS or POST.  i can clock the fsb to somewhere around 120 using fuzzy logic but nowhere near 133 before instability occurs.  i've tested the temperature ratings using the BIOS by powering on after leaving the system off for a while and the temperature raises to about 54c at 133mhz which is well within normal range.  unless the board is giving me a bad temperature readout this board cannot be shutting down due to overheating.  the PSU is well within the required range.  however the manual specifies that ddr2700 is supposed to be used with this board.  would replacing my memory with 2700 allow me to raise the fsb to 133?  i'm stumped.
    here are my system specs:
    enermax 350 Watt PSU
kt3ultra2 with onboard ATA 133 RAID
    Bios Ver. 5.7
    AMD 1800+ palimino core 100 mhz fsb :( 1150mhz
256 mb black mushkin 3200 ddr running at 333mhz
    western digital ATA100 80gb 7,200 HDD
    ATI RADEON 9800 128mb

    ok ok ok
so its been awhile but i'm lazy.   its amazing what a laggy ut2004 session will do to man.  i finally took off the heatsink and fan  then gave it a thorough cleaning then reattached and its running at 35 *C like a champ.   a word of advice... if you ever live in a house with no central air (i've lived in two different houses with no central air since building this pc two years ago)  MAKE sure to clean your components.  i've never seen that much dust compacted into one place.  the space between the fan and the heatsink was clogged with so much dirt that it made airflow virtually impossible.  thanx for the friendly advice.  now i look forward to playing ut2004 at a decent setting.
    peace.

  • Kt3 Ultra2 (MS-6380E) 2 Issues

My First issue is, Fuzzy Logic and Pc Alert both don't show me any system information, Pc Alert shows 'Empty' In all Fienlds, and when i sstartup Fuzzy Logic I get this error " Load Hardware Monitor NT Driver Fail"  Now they worked fine until I installed a NIC, and a CdROM Drive.  Now they wont work, I have tried uninstalleing and re-installing and everything.  This being a new computer I am very worried about the cpu temp and any Information on this problem would help me alot.
Second I can only set my clock speed to 133mhz in bios when this board is a 266mhz.  How do I fix this?
    Thanks in advance.
    Dan ?(

Did you get this working Dan?
If not, any other monitoring software would likely have the same problem, as the WinXP Driver required to provide information is not loading.
It sounds to me like one of the drivers for either your new NIC or CD-ROM are conflicting with the WinXP "Hardware Monitor NT Driver". Did you allow WinXP to detect and install drivers for your new hardware. Did you follow the instructions for installations exactly. Sometimes you have to install drivers before the hardware, sometimes you let WinXP do it all.
Anyway, as these are not critical items, I would suggest that you fully uninstall the NIC and CD-ROM, then test PC Alert 4 / Fuzzy Logic work, which they should. Then re-install the NIC and CD-ROM one at a time and see which one causes the problem. Then you can start tracking down the cause from the supplier. Perhaps there will be a driver update available?
    Good luck.
PS: Sounds like you have an incorrect setting in the BIOS if it is showing 70C as the LOW limit. Fix it. Or are you misreading. Check the MB manual.
PPS: SpeedFan 4.07 is an alternate way to read the values.

after i unplug it the longer i leave it unplugged the longer it will be before the power cuts out and computer stops. sometimes after one of these stops the computer will just start up again. its like a ghost!

when the voodoo 3 is connected i get a long beep followed by 3 short beeps.
ive replaced the 350w power source out of my second computer that operates on the 350 ps no problems.
ive reseated the cpu, moved the ram to a different slot, flashed the bios with newest version, removed all non essential parts but still system halts. and restarts randomly. Even with harddrive removed computer sometimes restarts during bootup if it has restarted within last 5 mins.

ok, i just borrowed a voltmeter from a friend to test my power source, unfortunately, its been a while since grade 12 physics class and i cant remember everything there is to do with it. i remember current is amps and voltage is the strength of the energy. but after that.... well.
anyone know of a site that gives instructions on how to test a powersource with a voltmeter?
the main power source has like a grid of 10x2 with about 10 different colours.
the sub power plugs have grid of 4x1 with 2black red and yellow
i assume i am going to be testing the main plug that goes into the motherboard.. which colours/grid spots do i check? as well where does the positive and negative ends of the voltmeter go?

  • Problem with Athlon XP 2600+ and KT3 Ultra2

    My specs:
    MSI KT3 Ultra2 w/raid
    Athlon XP 2600+ 333fsb
    512 mb samsung ram 266mhz
    2x 80 gig maxtors
    Antec True 480watt
    Retail HSF
    My problem:
When I put in the cpu, it only read it as being 1250 mhz
    What I did:
I looked all over the msi website for information on how to fix this.  I hadn't updated my bios, so I upgraded to AMI bios v5.6 because I've heard mixed things on 5.7.  It updated fine, so I went into the bios and changed my FSB to 166.  At 166, my computer won't even boot to windows, if I put it back down to 133 or 100 it will work fine, otherwise it just restarts before the windows XP loading screen.  MY cpu runs 40~44 C
I get blue screens of death if I actually get into windows at all.  Outside of windows it seems to run fine if I am at a dos prompt or whatnot.
Anyone think they can help me with this problem?  Seems many people have been having some problems with this.

    nm, I'm an idiot  :D
    guess I need new ram?

  • KT3 Ultra2 (MS6380E v1.0) and XP2800

I am at my wits end.
I had a MS-6380E board running fine with an XP1900.
Since upgrading to an XP2800 (which according to the MSI site is supported) I can’t get my system stable except by setting the FSB to 100 in BIOS.  As I understand it, it should be set at 166.  However, every time I attempt to set it at that value (or indeed any higher than about 125) the system shuts down (powers off) within a minute of booting up.
Consequently the CPU is running slow – about 1.25Ghz.  If I increase the FSB to 166 the boot screen recognizes that it is running an XP2800 processor but I then have the instability problems described above.
I have tried everything I can think of.  The BIOS (5.7) and motherboard drivers are all up to date.  The fan tests fine.  I went out and brought a new power supply (specs below) believing it would solve the problem (previously using a 350W PSU).  It hasn’t even improved things.  Maybe I need more power, but I would have thought that what I have bought is ample.
    My system:
    Codegen 450W ATX2.03(P4) Model 450x; 3.3V/25A, 5V/35A, 12V/16A (235W Max)
    MSI KT3 Ultra2 MS-6380E v1.0
    Athlon Barton XP2800 OPGA 1.65V 85C 512k 333MHz
    2 * 256Mb  3200 Kingston (400)
    MSI MS-StarForce GeForce4 MX 420 (NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420)
    Creative SB Live! Series (WDM)
    IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller
    ST320420A and WDC WD1200JB-00GVA0 HDDs
    LITEON DVD-ROM LTD165H, LITEON CD-RW LTR-40125S
    FDD
    CanoScan LiDE 20/N670U/N676U
    HP Laserjet 1000 series
    SoftV92 56k Data Fax Modem
Logitech Cordless MX Duo keyboard and mouse
    Win XP Pro
I hope this information is adequate.  Unfortunately I am only semi-computer literate.

"...2 * 256Mb 3200 Kingston (400)..." I really don't know for sure, but think Bios update (5.7) didn't change the Mobo's memory support, so, the max. speed supported should be PC 2700 (running 1:1 with CPU speed). You were running the old CPU with same memory ? At what speed ? Try with only 1 module to see if it works. Or if you can, try a PC 2700 memory to see if it works. Also agree with Wonka about P.S. Codegen are really not good. You must have in mind that this Mobo takes most of it's power from 3.3 and 5v. rails and the 3.3v. 25 A. isn't good for a pretty loaded PC as yours. But you say it runs for a minute or so, then also you could have a temp. problem as said by Toenne. Is HS seated OK ? (Not 180 degrees upside down and with only a drop of thermal grease, and is it strong enough for the job ? )

  • [KT3 Ultra2-R / PSU] Upgrading to Barton 3000+

    Hi!
I'm thinking about upgrading from my 2200+ to a Barton 3000+ chip. Is there any problems with this? Is my PSU good enough to handle the upgrade?
    My PSU is Antec TruePower 380P (+5V: 35A, +12V: 18A, +3.3V: 28A).
After the upgrade my computer's specs would be:
    MSI KT3 Ultra2-R
    AMD Athlon Barton 3000+
    2x512mb Kingston ValueRAM
    GeForce4 Ti4600
80gb Western Digital HDD + 40gb Seagate HDD
    CD-RW drive
    SB Audigy
    3 case fans
How about if I add a third 512mb DIMM, a 80gb HDD and change the GF4 to a Radeon 9800? Would the PSU still be good enough?
    Thanks in advance!

Really? I think my ValueRAM are different revision, but I'm not having any problems. I guess I'm lucky.

Haven't thought about that yet, because I only have the money for the processor upgrade.
