KT3 Ultra2-R ... Can't change FSB beyond 100

Dear all,
Just got my KT3 Ultra2-R with an Athlon XP2100, upgraded to 5.7 AMI BIOS, worked great, then made some changes to CMOS (forgot which ones), then couldn't boot.
When I finally booted and went to CMOS setup, it would not let me change the FSB to anything other than 100...that is, no options on the FSB when I hit enter (shrug).
Now, my system recognizes the CPU as an AMD XP 1500...blah. Tried everything...resetting CMOS with jumper, took out computer battery, replace 350 SmartBlue PSU with 400 Watt PSU, replaced Heatsink/cooler with better one, wiped contacts, nothing...it's not the temps, because my case idles at 29C chassis and 36C CPU temps.  Even reflashed back to BIOS version 5.6, and still no go.
When I do "performance" settings in CMOS, it will give me 133 FSB, but my system will now be unstable. Weird thing was, before this "event", performance setting put it at 166 FSB :(
Anyway, my comp isn't dead....it just won't let me change the FSB.  I called up ABS Computers where I bought this, and they said they are not responsible for damage caused from flashing BIOS...blah, whatever.
I just put out an order for an Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard and joined the NForce2 bandwagon, but if someone could give me some insight into what I could do about my motherboard, besides hang it on my wall, I'd certainly appreciate it.
Here are specs of my system:
MSI Kt3 Ultra2-R
Athlon XP2100
Geforce2 video card
soundblaster 5.1 Live
WD 120 Gig and WD 60 Gig
Liteon CRWD
Sony DRU-500AX
Q-Tech Quiet PSU 400 Watts
Nexus Heatsink/Fan
Windows XP Home

Thanks for the reply, but while checking out the other problem with the KT4V / Athlon 2400 Clock Speed Problem (above) who couldn't set his FSB beyond 100, but when he set it the multiplier to 12.5/13, he gets a 20X multiplier when he goes into Fuzzy Logic.
Well, guess what, I did the same thing (set my CPU multiplier in BIOS to 12.5/13, and lo and behold, I go into fuzzy logic, and my AMD XP 2100 is recognized as an AMD XP2600 running at 2000 megahertz...now someone explain that to me! I even check with SiSandra, and yup, it's seeing a 2000 megahertz processor. I even ran the benchmark tests on SiSandra, and it's on par with that processor.
However, my FSB is only 100, and thus, my memory benchmarks are about 25% below the norm for my DDR333 RAM chips (i guess because they are synchronized with the FSB, and probably running at 200 then).
Anyhoo, i'm tired of trouble shooting and figuring out what the hell is going on.  The comp is extremely stable at 2000 megahertz at 100 FSB...don't know what else to do...so installing new motherboard tomorrow and report back later.

  • AMD says MSI KT3 Ultra2 will support 166 MHz FSB

    Here's the link:
    http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_182_869_4348^4378|123_1_XP,00.html
What's really interesting to me here is that apparently bios version 5.7 , with an AMD-reported release date of 10/23/02, is what will actually allow the KT3 Ultra2 to support the 166MHz FSB.
It looks very much to me as if the KT3 Ultra and the KT3 Ultra2's not only share the same model number but also the same bioses as well.
What would prevent bios 5.7, when MSI releases it to the public, from supporting a 166MHz fsb in the KT3-U's as well as the the KT3-U2's?

Thanks for the link, Wonk...  I had actually read through that thread and kind of came away with the impression that although MSI said the KT3 U would not support a 166MHz FSB, nobody was really sure enough about that to place bets on it...
Anyway, I only ran across this info on the AMD site last night--apparently it's new info, and runs in tandem with a rumor over on the Inquirer http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=6032
which states that AMD is going to announce 166MHz FSB 2600's tomorrow--and if not tomorrow then shortly before Comdex.  I have to admit this info on the AMD site lends some credence to the idea.
What's interesting to me as well is that on this same list the KT4 Ultra is not listed as supporting the 166MHz fsb 2600 +, at least with its present bios.
    Hmmmm.....

  • Can't change FSB or anything

I have been trying to oc my 2200 to get the most out of it that I can.  I tried the wire trick a while back but I ended up bending a pin which I fixed.  After that I never oc'ed my cpu.  I tried the other day just to raise my FSB but had no luck.
For some reason when I raise the FSB nothing happens to the cpu.  I had the FSB at 290 but the cpu was still 1800mhz in bios, core center, and windows.  Im pretty sure you can raise the FSB without unlocking the cpu.  I thought I had before.  Now I cant for some reason, and I dont know why.
What am I doing wrong?  How come the FSB wont go up and change my cpu clock?  Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Hi, thanks for the tip. I changed the fsb/ddr ration to 1:1 as you suggested and upped the fsb to 140 last night (multiplier set at 7 in the bios) with Vcore left at standard.  WCPUID showed a clock speed of 2100 with a multiplier of 15. The cpu temp is now around 48c, and system seems to be stable.
I will try upping it a bit more tonight, but a jump of 300 Mhz over the standard clock speed seems pretty good to me.
The only thing that is bugging me is that I can't up the multiplier from 7 in the bios, even if I go at 7.5 with a fsb of 133 the system won't boot, even when I up the Vcore to 1.8v. Also 7 is the lowest I can go (I get options from 7 to 13.5).  If you know why this might be (do I need to unlock the cpu?) or have any other tips for oc'ing this system I'd be grateful.

  • 5D III can't change ISO to 100

i am using a 1 year old 5D III. i never really thought about it, but i assumed i could not shoot a lower ISO than 200.
but looking at exif data in other photograhers' photosi see ISO of 100.
i thought cool. because that is what i used mostly on the 7D.
but i couldn't change the ISO lower than 200. moving the dial the ISO goes from 200 to A.
so i got out the manual. i know a clever idea. followed the directions on ISO settings. and still, no joy. looked online. same directions. same results. i was desparate so had a nikon friend take a look. same results. nothing lower than 200.
i am assuming i am missing a step somewhere.
    i shoot RAW without jpg.

  • KT3 Ultra2 and HDD 137Gb

I wonder if someone can help me to be clear about the following please.
I understand that there are two inter-related areas with regard to drives that exceed this capacity barrier. One is the need for 48bit LBA within windows to have partitions greater than this size and the other is to have a BIOS that is itself able to address a drive of that size.
    1. As regards the Bios issue, according to this thread https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=70205 the KT3 Ultra2 can use HDD >137Gb and would have no probs with a 200 or 250Gb HDD. Is this correct?
    2. As regards o/s issues, I use XP SP1 (intergrated disk). It was my understanding that XP with SP1 was all that was required to run a HDD >137Gb this as per the following threads.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=71126&hilight=hard+disk
    http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/faq/137_winxp.html#trad
However, the info below from MS suggests that one also needs the Atapi.sys version to be 5.1.2600.1135 or later.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303013
So in my case I have XP SP1 with Atapi.sys version 5.1.2600.1106, therefore I would need to apply Microsoft Knowledge Base article 331958 , referred to in kb303013 above.
This would in the first instance update my Atapi.sys version to the required one ie v1135 (or later). Am I correct in my understanding please?
I have not upgraded my HDD yet but would like to be clear on these issues before taking the plunge.

Thanks for your reply Wonkanoby. I have read several of your posts that say exactly the same thing ie XP with SP1 integrated is fine.
Any thoughts on what the MS articles are all about. Sorry to ask, but I just get nervy before upgrades.
Plus I wonder if any other KT3 Ultra2 users can let me know if 250Gb (or any HDD of 200Gb or higher) works on their system.
    Many thanks

    Can I change the vlan 100 Cisco-Voice to vlan 5 Cisco-Voice??
if it is possible how to do it?

  • KT3 Ultra2 & FSB

Alright, the problem is that from a cold boot, the systems hangs with loading an OS at 166fsb. The cpu usually runs at 166x10.5 but dropping it down to 166x10 or 9.5 does no good so I know it is not the processor. The ram is 2-512MB sticks of PC3500 hyperx (looking to use this in a newer system and putting pc2700 samsung back in current). There is no setting in the bios that makes it stable (have tried them all in groups of ~5 changes per boot). The psu is an Antec 300w which is only required to power mb, video, nic, 1 hd, 1 cd, and 2-120mm fans so it shouldn't be at fault. The system will simply not boot up using a 166/167/etc fsb (haven't bothered with 152(?)-165 which is the range of the 1/5 divider) until the system has been running for awhile, sooner if I get the system going with a game or something. Then I can reboot and throw the fsb up, stable up to 183. The question, why does it not boot at 166fsb from a power-off state? Latest BIOS. Any ideas?
    Currently running at 133x12.5

The following was typed up and supposed to be posted last night but comcast decided to crap out and not work until now
    Antec PP-303X 300W
I've been reading up and it looks like it depends on where the motherboard gets most of its current. If its from the 5v rail, there shouldn't be much of a problem, but if it gets most of it from 3.3, then there's a problem. I didn't realize some motherboards use one rail over another depending on design.
It looks as if this psu was designed in mind with a motherboard pulling off the +5, but I'm having problems finding technical documents for the KT3 Ultra2. The CPU itself should be draining about 20 amps by itself at load according to the calculations that were made, which leads me to believe this motherboard is pulling from 5v as the 3.3 on this power supply is very unefficient for this use. The weird thing is, their truepower series doesn't put out much more, if any, power on the 5v rail than the current psu and if this motherboard is designed to take what it can from the 5v, it doesn't appear the decision to buy a new antec power supply is a good one, unless its the 530watt varient which puts out 40amps on +5. I'm going to look into tring a different power supply tomorrow and see if it fixes the 166fsb problems. In the mean time, anyone know where I can find technical documents for this motherboard? Its the most difficult piece of hardware to find detailed information on.
    Added now:
From what I've learned, a lot of the time the ram feeds off the 5v line, again depending on the motherboard. Nowhere in the spec sheets of hyperx does it claims to use 40 watts per stick of ram. I'll try readng over my nonsense post later today when I'm more awake as its 6:55am right now and it was 1am last night. Going to stop by the bank today and head out to probably pickup antec's 530w psu.

  • Can't enter bios on KT3 Ultra2

last night I did a succesful bios upgrade to V5.7 on my KT3 Ultra 2 board.
System rebooted into bios default with no problems and I reset all the parameters as per the previous version.
Unfortunately, I set the FSB to 166 instead of 133 ( Gawd knows what I was thinking of at the time!).
On reboot after saving and exiting the bios setup, I was met with a blank video screen - no beeps came from PC on reboot.
The LED display is showing 1&2 Red, 3&4 Green.
Subsequent reboots show the LED display goes straight to this configuration on power up.
I tried resetting the bios back to the default, but I still have the same symptoms.
DVD , CD-RW and HDD light up during boot up, but nothing seen on the Floppy. Hitting Del or F11 has no effect.
I don't have another PC that will allow me to check CPU, Memory or Video card.
I've tried changing the Memory round and reducing to just one stick. Even ran without memory and still got same symptoms without any beeps during bootup.
At the moment the PC has been powered down and the clear-bios jumper left in 2&3 overnightin an effort to clear the bios.
Where do I go from here?
Now if I've knackered the mobo/bios, how do I stand installing a new mobo/cpu under the existing Windows XP installation on the Master Hard drive ? My last back-up is out of date and having just come back off hols the HDD is full of images I desperately need to keep!
    System:
MSI KT3 Ultra2 series mobo; Athlon XP1800+; Matrox G450 Video Card; 512Megs PC2100 DDRMemory; Amibios V5.7; 350W PSU; ample cooling by way of extra fans; Windows XP Home SP1.

I was trying 10.5*166 (the cpu has ever done this in the past) when the computer refuses to start.
    the D-braket shows : LED 1&2 Red, 3&4 Green.
rest, unplung the bat, the card was dead

  • KT3 Ultra2 AMD 2800+ won't boot at 166 fsb

    Hello guys / girls,
I've searched the database multiple times for this, but couldn't find anyone with the same problem:
My computer won't boot into windows or linux at fsb 166, it crashes during starting of the OS. When I reduce the fsb to 160, everything runs fine. First I thought it was the processor which would get too hot, but it's not getting too hot, only 27 C idle!!! The proc is designed to run at 333 / 2 = 166 mhz fsb so I don't see what's going wrong...
    My specs:
    KT3 Ultra2 mainboard
    AMD 2800+ proc
    noname psu: +3.3 28 A, +5 30 A, +12 15 A
Thermaltake volcano 7+ fan at low speed, gives proc temp of 27 deg. C idle
    Kingston DDR-SDRAM PC3200 - 512 MBytes
    CPU-Z info: http://bootje.servebeer.com/transfer/cpuz.htm

But why is it working at an fsb of 160 mhz?? I am using that configuration now, and no problem. The problems start when I increase the fsb to 162 or higher...
Also, according to the guy who sold me the memory, the memory should also work at 333 mhz.
Before I had an XP2800+ proc, I had a XP1700+ proc, which ran at a default fsb of 133 (tweaked to 140 (of course)), with the same configuration as I have now, and no problems at all... So the memory then ran at 266 mhz, thats even lower than 333... But i'll give it a go with different memory, but I can only do that after the weekend (roommate with other memory is gone for the weekend...)
Anyone other suggestions what the problem could be??

  • MSI KT3 Ultra2-CLS and 166Mhz FSB

    I own a KT3 Ultra2-CL and a Athlon 1400C.
At the moment it runs 11,5x133 = 1533Mhz. Stable.
It also runs 9x166 = 1500. Stable, but my PCI runs 41Mhz.
So please implement the correct divider in very near future bios update.
It should not be true that customers, who invest less money in a new mainboard than others, can´t use all of the functions the chipset provides. I WANT TO RUN 166Mhz FSB WITH 33Mhz PCI
All of your "expensive" boards provide this divider.
    IS THIS MAREKTING 2003???

  • KT3 Ultra2-C FSB support?

About 13 months ago I purchased a prebuilt PC system and made the mistake of assuming (based on the name) that the KT3 Ultra2-C (MS-6593) was similar to the rest of the KT3 Ultra2 line, which I had heard good things about, and I expected similar future processor support.  In fact if you do a Google search you will dig up some old news releases that even state that MS-6593 supports Barton CPUs.  Flash forward in time, and I discover that despite the extremely similar name, the Ultra2-C apparently does not support the newer 333 FSB CPUs.  A search on this site comes up with some posts that say this is because the Ultra2-C  doesn't even have the 1/5 divider, so the PCI speeds at 166 will be far out of spec.
Can anyone confirm if they have gotten Bartons to work with this motherboard?  Or otherwise confirm if this board is in fact lacking a 1/5 divider at 166 FSB?  Can this be fixed with a BIOS update?
The BIOS allows one to set a CPU FSB up to 200 mhz, and the board came with overclocking utilities, etc.  Speaking as an engineer myself, it is completely illogical to make a product that supports high FSB but does not have a 1/5 DIVIDER at 166!  I also can't believe a company would release a product with such a similar name yet have such critical differences in features.
    Signed,
    Confused and Disappointed

Yepp, it does not have the 1/5 divider, similar to the KT3 Ultra-ARU. But the Ultra-ARU is often reportet to run at FSB166, but it is not official

  • Can\'t boot without clearing cmos (kt3 ultra2)

    Hi,
My kt3 ultra2 board won't boot up unless I clear the CMOS.  I am using the following basic configuration:
    Athlon 1800+ w/ alpha pal8045 heatsink
256 mb of samsung pc2700 ram
    Radeon 8500LE graphics card
My psu is a 400W powmax.  Here are the specs from the side of the unit:
    3.3V 28A
    5V 30A
    12V 25A
my cpu temp peaks at 40C and the cmos battery is at 3.39V.
I am running at default settings w/ cpu fsb=100. Everytime I power up the computer (from cold start) I need to clear the CMOS. Otherwise, the D-Link lights hang on memory detection test.
Doing a soft reboot (ctrl - alt - del) once it starts up does not cause it to hang.
Either way once the thing boots it says:
    CMOS/GPNV Checksum Bad
(does any one know if this could be why it's scewing up)
What could be causing this problem?  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you

I bought one of these boards about 2 weeks ago and have had terrible problems with my geforce 4 concerning exactly the same issue. Now from the support forums i have been reading, everyone seems to say different things. Either change your ram, power supply, graphics card (how would you feel if someone told you to change your geforce 4 ti4600 that you paid £300 for?)
Now lets face it, motherboards shouldn't have to be picky about components should they? Power supplies are "power supplies" at the end of the day, and yes sometimes there are good and bad makes and models, but it shouldn't stop someone from using a regular bog standard power supply. My thoughts and concerns about the KT3 Ultra 2 is that the motherboard manufacturer is in the wrong here and do not seem to be doing anything about it.
I've worked with PC's for about 4-5 years and have used many makes and models of motherboard and been able to get them working successfully every time, however the MSI KT3 Ultra 2 board is plagued with problems and it's about time someone did something about it. How would you feel if i sold you a car that would only go 10 miles and then stop working?

  • How can I flash the bios of a MSI kt3 ultra2 without a floppy drive?

How can I flash the bios of a MSI kt3 ultra2 without a floppy drive?
I used the msi live update software to download the bios update programe...when I run it gives 2 options dos and windows
but the windows option is greyed out and the dos option requires a floppy drive (mine does not work)..what can I do?

I can tell you what you need to do but unfortunately - not how to do all of it.
You will need to make a bootable CD with the neccessary files on it .- Somewhere on the www you should be able to find the instructions. I have flashed from a CD   with no problems on a K7S5A board . The CD image was available as a complete download and just needed burning to the CD  so - apart from the obvious ( BIOS file , BIOS installer ,command.com,msdos .sys, io.sys)I don't know what else might  be needed on the CD- unfortunately the disk I made is long gone.
I'm sure a search will find what you need to know.
Once you have the disk -just insert in CD Drive - restart and follow the instructions.

  • KT3 Ultra2 FSB speed after BIOS upgrade

I have just upgraded the BIOS on my KT3 Ultra2 mainboard. On the CPU Support page, it says my mainboard support CPUs with FSB @ 333 MHz with the newest BIOS, but in the manual it says that the FSB is @ 200/266 MHz. Did the BIOS upgrade increase the FSB so that the FSB now is @ 200/266/333 MHz?

it increased the options, you still have to set it after flashing though
