KT3 ultra2 with amd barton 3000+ problems

Ok so I upgraded from a 1800+ to a barton 3000+, and im having problems running the chip. Iv set the fsb to 166, the ram to HCLK, tried running with just one stick, it runs for about 5min then restarts. Any ideas?
System specs
Msi kt3 Ultra 2 (newest bios 5.7)
Msi GF fx 5900 not overclocked
2x 512 pc3200 ram, one stick is kingston other is OCZ
Sound blaster Audigy
Enermax 365 watt pws
20gb maxtor hd (lol)

Well if you purchased an Athlon XP 3000+ which is a 400mhz chip and are trying to run it at 333mhz instead of 400mhz that might be the issue aside from the fact that the KT3 Ultra2 does not support that chip so it could also be a bios issue.
I retract a little of that.  There is an Athlon XP 3000+ 333mhz chip.  But are you sure this is what you obtained?  If not that is your problem.

  • KT3 Ultra2-R w/Barton 2500+ will not run at 166FSB

hello again all .  well in light of MSI's recent Bios revision for the KT3 Ultra2-R coming with support for the Barton up to 3000+ and the cost of the 2500+ coming down to $96 dollars (retail) at Newegg i couldn't resist the headache i now have.  so far every attempt i have made at 166FSB has crashed and burned.
currently the system is running at 12.5x156 given that when i try to run at 11x157 to 11x160 the system locks during PCMark2002/3DMark2001SE benching.  what's even more amusing is that if i go to 11x161 to 11x165 the system will not even fire up the drives on the Promise ATA133 RAID controller.  at 166FSB the system outright doesn't post.  MSI has responded to me and told me that it is my memory which i find comical as both sticks have been tried separately and that boot issue to the RAID doesn't read as a memory problem to me (not to mention Corsair would laugh at that as well especially since the sticks are capable of 200FSB and backed with a lifetime warranty to do such).
so aside from trying every memory timing configuration possible on the board, stripping it down to just the video card, memory, and drives, without any luck any other notions as to what would be the problem would be greatly appreciated.  thanks in advance!

You should leave memory speed at spd/auto...
When you set the FSB, need to reboot before it kicks in.
If you check the memory speed after the reboot it should be upped as well.
This is the problem; the BIOS won't let me do what you've described.
If I reset the CMOS, the SDRAM settings look like this. So I go into Frequency/Voltage Control and change the FSB to 166MHz, like this, then the SDRAM settings have automatically changed to HCLK+66, like so and there are no longer any other options in the list, like so.
Saving the settings and exiting the BIOS causes it to fail to POST.

I got problem using direct3d : when I try to test direct3d with dxdiag, the test is directly canceled with the popup message " Tets canceled, key pressed" (Not exactly this, it's in french here :-) )
    Here is my config :
    AMD Athlon 1800+
    512 RAM ( DDR )

    MSI KT3 Ultra2
I have installed the lastest drivers from nvidia site
I'm waiting for your help. I really need it.

Thanks for your help, I've found the problem.
In fact, there was 2 problems :
1-  Network card in PCI slot 1 --> moved to the 2.
2- Keybord manager problem --> I have to close the service in the task bar, near the clock.
Now it works, but I dont't know why this keyboard manager hangs.
Again, thanks for your help !!

     ;( Please help me any1.
I have MBO KT4 Ultra-SR (MS-6590) with CPU AMD Barton 2500+ and i have a big problem. System corectly boot only if a select CPU FSB Clock = 100 MHz (CPU Ration/CPU Vcore/DDR Voltage=all AUTO). When a select CPU FSB Clock 133 or 166 MHz, system begin run corectly and after few second turned OFF. I selecting SDRAM Frequency on=AUTO/266/333/400 MHz but not working. My old CPU is AMD XP Palomino 2100 MHz and work fine with KT4 Ultra MBO. I upgrade BIOS with 1.4 version. I change memory module with PQI (PC 2700/256 MB) and JETRAM (PC 2700/256 MB) but is same ":censored: ". System dont work. Bad CPU Barton 2500+? I dont no. Please help me any1.

Most of the time, this sort of problems arise because of power suppliy issues.. U have a enamax 300W PSU which is a VERY GOOD PSU but might just be on the line...
If u can, try swapping the PSu for a good 400 or a 420W PSU.. this might solve your enigma.. I really dont think this is your processor...

I can see no obvious problem displayed in core centre, but suspect that the alarm is CPU fan speed related - I am running the AMD supplied Heat sink& Fan assembly.
Anyone have any ideas why this problem has suddenly got worse?

    Hi mcihael ,
Thanks for the tip about Fanspeed.  I have seen it around but never thought i had a need of until now.
I must admit that having all of these extra applications supplied with the motherboard can get a bit confusing - the only real use that Core Center has been to me was the alarm going off letting me know that something serious was wrong!
What's your opinion on case fans?    Should they be EXTRACT, INTAKE or a mixture? Most people i read about say exhaust fans are best to take away the hot air, while others claim intake fans help keep a flow of air around the CPU cooler.

this board will probably support it via BIOS update, i hope, since its KT333CE chipset

    joe,
I bought my rig from ABS.  I had a lot of options when choosing this rig.  I chose the 2400 tbred at the time because it was priced just right.
The old bios worked with the 2400 before I flashed it with the latest 5.6.  Use the latest version of the live update to flash the bios if you need to.  Make sure you uninstall the older version of Live Update before you update to the newer version.  I did not do this at first and ran into a few snags.  The program would not even log onto MSI website.  I solved it by uninstalling the program.  Then I had to go into the registry and manually delete the program entries before I got it to work.
I am by no means a techie, and I really have no business messing around with the registry entries since I do not completely understand it.  I do know that when I am having problems with certain programs that I can go into HKEY LOCAL Machine and from there I can delete the chosen program registries.  I did that for the old version of Live Update, and it worked like a charm.  From there, I had a successful flash.  That was something that I had never done before.  I researched the flash a bit, and I was prepared to buy a new bios chip if I had a bad flash.  Big D1

  • How to enable 1.7v= on KT3 Ultra2 with tbredB

so i got this XP2100+ tbredB, but in the bios i got only up to 1.7v, is there a way to up the voltaje more??? like to 1.8v  With old palomino XP1600+ i got all up to 1.85v
    thanks :D

Join the contacts at L11 to increase the default voltage, my tbred A 1700+ has a default voltage of 1.85v now. Your palamino had a different default voltage.

  • Stats for Kt3 ultra2 with 1700 thoroughbred A?

I was just wondering what i should be able to get out of this cpu with this board.  I have 2x256 megs of samsung pc2700 ram, a radeon 8500 le 128meg and soundblaster live value.  I can get my system up to 1800 mhz (12x151) with the ultra setting on and i am getting good performance... but like most people i want more.  I am running the stiock cooler but i plan on upgradeing it very soon (i am already at ~50 degrees).   I am runnign the ram at cas 2.5 like its suited for and i simple cannot get my fsb any higher.  I can get a 155 fsb with a multiplier of 11 but no higher.  Any help would be great.

I've got a tbredA 1700 currently running at 1.88Ghz @ 170FSB with an 11x multiplier but I also had to do a voltage mod but I didn't connect brodges.
I connected vss to vid1 and vss to vid3 via the motherboard socket to get 1.75V default.  This thread will explain how to do it http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showindex.php?s=1df252bb756f86f95a4a4adf9d106506&threadid=154172
BEWARE: increasing your voltage will increase your CPU temps so a good CPU cooler is recommended

  • KT3 Ultra2 with PC2700 ram....

How do I make full use of the PC2700 with an Athlon XP 2000+? I'm using Samsung memory so it should go like the clappers...should I just set the fsb to 166 and keep memory timings to SPD. I can enable T1 command quite happily, but should I up the voltage to 2.8v?
    Thanks in advance,
    John

set your ram to run at 333 with aggressive settings thats about all you can do...if you put the fsb to 166 taking your cpu is unlocked that would be better cause your ram and cpu would both be running at 333

  • Kt3 ultra2 + MSI 8348A CD/RW problem

i don't know why but when i check settings for CDRW, it's running only in PIO mode...i suppose this writer supports UDMA33 mode, am i right? does somebody knows where's problem?

    XP1600+, kt3ultra2, 256 MB pc266, maxtor diamax+ 30GB, windows XP + service pack 1
    thank for answer...
    have a nice day

You can change it to DMA mode.
Device Manager -> IDE controller -> Primary/Secondary IDE Channel -> Advanced Settings -> Transfer mode "DMA if available"
Or you have already set and it is still PIO mode? Try to update the IDE controller driver again by manually selecting from the driver list.

  • BIOS Settings Problem on KT3 Ultra2 MS-6380E with Barton 3000+(FSB333)

Well, I finally got my Barton 3000+ with 333 MHz FSB and installed it yesterday in my MSI KT3 Ultra2 Mainboard....
    System Before changing anything:
    PSU: DTK  400 W
    +3.3 V / 22 A
    +5 V / 35 A
    +12 V / 15 A
    -5 V / 0.5 A
    -12 V / 0.8 A
    +5 V VSB / 3 A
So that should make up 400 W as far as I know, my total System drain should be around 300-350 W so even if it would not suffice 400 W it should run the system ?
    Mainboard: KT3 Ultra 2 (BIOS v5.7)
CPU: AMD XP 2100 FSB 133 MHz
    RAM: 1.536 MB, 3x512 MB Infineon PC3200 (400MHz) CL 3-3-3-8 @400MHz, Cl2.5-3-3-7@333Mhz, 2-2-2-6@266MHz

Printer: HP Deskjet 970Cxi with Original HP Driver Version 4.3
OS: Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4
BIOS Settings: SDRAM 1T Command: "Disabled" It won't work stable with 3 RAM's in it with that setting, but that I did know before.
    CPU Fast Command: "Ultra"
System was running stable for nearly 2 years with this Configuration:
    So now it goes:
First I changed the CPU form my old AMD XP 2100+ to the new Barton 3000 + with its new Arctic Cool Copper Silent 2TC.
Then I went into BIOS and raised the FSB to 166 MHz, which should be the correct one, or do I have to put 167 MHz in there (since 166.666666 MHz is rounded to 167)?
Then I exited and watched the restart...but it didn't start-up it only got me 3 long beeps at the HOST.
After some whining and beating I plugged out anything and cleared CMOS and started the whole thing again:
    System after Clearing CMOS:
    Mainboard: KT3 Ultra 2 (BIOS v5.7)
CPU: AMD XP 3000+  FSB 100 MHz
RAM: 1x512 MB Infineon PC3200 CL 2-3-3-7 (BIOS setting CAS Latency by "SPD")

Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 172T with Driver Version 1.0
OS: Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4
With all Default settings, the Computer boots up, and is correctly Recognized as a Barton 1300 MHz.
When increasing FSB to 133 MHz it is correctly displayed as a Barton 2200+
    NOW...
...after adding one BIOS setting after another I narrowed the problem down to the "CPU Fast Command (decode)" Function...if set to Ultra it does not boot-up when running 166 MHz FSB, it does not even let me into BIOS. I have to clear CMOS and restart from scratch again...
Is this normal and expectable with a Barton 3000+ running at the native 166 MHz FSB or not ?
Since my system before was running on "Ultra" with my old AMD XP 2100+.
There is only one more thing I noticed, the CPU V-Core is shown to be only 1.616 V (setting on "Auto" but it should be 1.65 V ? Should I increase the V-Core to 1.675 V in order to get closer to 1.65 V or shouldn't I worry about ?
Thanks for any Input you can give me on the problem.
    Iscaran

Iscaran, you are indeed correct in the statement which you made

This setting can be set to fast/ultra on the KT3 Ultra2 when using PC2100 ram running at 266. However, when using PC2700 ram running at 333, this setting MUST be set to normal for the satisfactory operation of the board. I know that you have PC3200 ram actually installed but it is only running at 333.

    Yes, absolutely normal

How are you measuring this ie Bios or o/s utility? Not unknown that these are incorrect. However, if you feel unhappy about this, try setting the V-core manually to 1.65v and check what this gives.
    Quote
So 3.3 V x 22 A gives 72.6 W, that could be really a little cutting the edge. Could that cause the board to not respond when setting the "CPU Fast Command" to "Ultra" ?
Getting a more powerful psu will not likely cure this well documented problem.
However, this board mostly draws power from the 3.3 & 5v rails. The 12v is mostly used to power HDD, optical and fans. When you consider that 128Mb of ram draws about 8-10w from the 5v rail and you have a total of 1.5Gb that adds up to 96-120W of juice just for the memory alone. This board will beep at you at o/s level when it's running underpowered but my opinion is the same as osnavi's your 3.3v & 5v rails are too low. Also what is combined 3.3v & 5v wattage. What kind of reading do you get on monitoring utilities.
By the way I have as you can see from my dets below the same board and cpu as you and when I changed from a XP2000 Palomino with PC2100 ram to XP3000 Barton and PC3200, I changed the 'Fast Command' setting from 'Fast' to 'Normal'
Hope this helps, enjoy the board

  • [KT3 Ultra2-R / PSU] Upgrading to Barton 3000+

    Hi!
I'm thinking about upgrading from my 2200+ to a Barton 3000+ chip. Is there any problems with this? Is my PSU good enough to handle the upgrade?
    My PSU is Antec TruePower 380P (+5V: 35A, +12V: 18A, +3.3V: 28A).
After the upgrade my computer's specs would be:
    MSI KT3 Ultra2-R
    AMD Athlon Barton 3000+
    2x512mb Kingston ValueRAM
    GeForce4 Ti4600
80gb Western Digital HDD + 40gb Seagate HDD
    CD-RW drive
    SB Audigy
    3 case fans
How about if I add a third 512mb DIMM, a 80gb HDD and change the GF4 to a Radeon 9800? Would the PSU still be good enough?
    Thanks in advance!

  • KT3 Ultra2 AMD 2800+ won't boot at 166 fsb

    Hello guys / girls,
I've searched the database multiple times for this, but couldn't find anyone with the same problem:
My computer won't boot into windows or linux at fsb 166, it crashes during starting of the OS. When I reduce the fsb to 160, everything runs fine. First I thought it was the processor which would get too hot, but it's not getting too hot, only 27 C idle!!! The proc is designed to run at 333 / 2 = 166 mhz fsb so I don't see what's going wrong...
    My specs:
    KT3 Ultra2 mainboard
    AMD 2800+ proc
    noname psu: +3.3 28 A, +5 30 A, +12 15 A
Thermaltake volcano 7+ fan at low speed, gives proc temp of 27 deg. C idle
    Kingston DDR-SDRAM PC3200 - 512 MBytes
    CPU-Z info: http://bootje.servebeer.com/transfer/cpuz.htm

But why is it working at an fsb of 160 mhz?? I am using that configuration now, and no problem. The problems start when I increase the fsb to 162 or higher...
Also, according to the guy who sold me the memory, the memory should also work at 333 mhz.
Before I had an XP2800+ proc, I had a XP1700+ proc, which ran at a default fsb of 133 (tweaked to 140 (of course)), with the same configuration as I have now, and no problems at all... So the memory then ran at 266 mhz, thats even lower than 333... But i'll give it a go with different memory, but I can only do that after the weekend (roommate with other memory is gone for the weekend...)
Anyone other suggestions what the problem could be??
