KT3 Ultra2 with PC2700 ram....

How do I make full use of the PC2700 with an Athlon XP 2000+? I'm using Samsung memory so it should go like the clappers...should I just set the fsb to 166 and keep memory timings to SPD. I can enable T1 command quite happily, but should I up the voltage to 2.8v?
Thanks in advance,
John

set your ram to run at 333 with aggressive settings thats about all you can do...if you put the fsb to 166 taking your cpu is unlocked that would be better cause your ram and cpu would both be running at 333

Ok so I upgraded from a 1800+ to a barton 3000+, and im having problems running the chip. Iv set the fsb to 166, the ram to HCLK, tried running with just one stick, it runs for about 5min then restarts. Any ideas?

Well if you purchased an Athlon XP 3000+ which is a 400mhz chip and are trying to run it at 333mhz instead of 400mhz that might be the issue aside from the fact that the KT3 Ultra2 does not support that chip so it could also be a bios issue.
I retract a little of that.  There is an Athlon XP 3000+ 333mhz chip.  But are you sure this is what you obtained?  If not that is your problem.

  • K7t266 pro with pc2700 RAM

    is this ok?
cause pc2700 ram is actaully eaiser to find and infact cheaper not sure why..
but will it be ok with my mobo? do its a kingston brand
also kingston only sell cas 2.5 right?
    thanks for the help

Most actual boards need pc2700 so more pc2700-ram is produced than pc2100.
Pc2700 should work on your board but prearrange the chance of exchanging it with your dealer.

  • Stats for Kt3 ultra2 with 1700 thoroughbred A?

I was just wondering what i should be able to get out of this cpu with this board.  I have 2x256 megs of samsung pc2700 ram, a radeon 8500 le 128meg and soundblaster live value.  I can get my system up to 1800 mhz (12x151) with the ultra setting on and i am getting good performance... but like most people i want more.  I am running the stiock cooler but i plan on upgradeing it very soon (i am already at ~50 degrees).   I am runnign the ram at cas 2.5 like its suited for and i simple cannot get my fsb any higher.  I can get a 155 fsb with a multiplier of 11 but no higher.  Any help would be great.

I've got a tbredA 1700 currently running at 1.88Ghz @ 170FSB with an 11x multiplier but I also had to do a voltage mod but I didn't connect brodges.
I connected vss to vid1 and vss to vid3 via the motherboard socket to get 1.75V default.  This thread will explain how to do it http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showindex.php?s=1df252bb756f86f95a4a4adf9d106506&threadid=154172
BEWARE: increasing your voltage will increase your CPU temps so a good CPU cooler is recommended

  • KT3 Ultra2 wont detect ram as pc2700

Join the contacts at L11 to increase the default voltage, my tbred A 1700+ has a default voltage of 1.85v now. Your palamino had a different default voltage.

  • KT3 Ultra2 stuck on Initializing Hard Drive Controller

    AMD Athlon 2200
    KT3 Ultra 2
    Antec 400W
    Maxtor 60G

I put the machine together and it does not display anything.   On the D Bracket it shows 2 red 2 green "Initializing Hard Drive Controller".  I have depopulated motherboard all the way down to just one stick of Ram, One hard drive the bare necessities.  It still doesnt work.  Swapped hard drives, video cards and Ram.  Measured voltages for power supply.  Rebuilt it twice from ground up.  Reset CMOS. Still same thing.  It shows the 2 red 2 green as soon as I turn it on, doesnt seem to be running any POST tests.
    Any suggestions? :O

I am a 17 year old high school student who has put together a total of 12 machines.  There are a couple of issues I would like to address:
    1.  Every PC I built was based around SOCKETA platform and EVERY board was an MSI.
    2.  I just finished building two machines around the KT3 Ultra-2 board (I am typing on now), have given the one to my uncle and aunt.  NO PROBLEMS.  XP2100 512 PC2700 Two 30Gb Maxtors RAID0 Saphire Radeon 9000 Pro 128mb DDR....   No trouble.  They went together in about 45 minutes...  I have hauled mine (I kept one for me - yippee!!)  up to my cabin and back again...  never ever failing...
    3.  I understand everyone's frustration in this issue, for it is DEFINETELY an issue, BUT, MSI I can guarantee is working out the solution and they stand behind their products.  I was having trouble with an Nforce based board.  Sent it back, got a new one in 4 days...  That has been my only trouble MY ONLY TROUBLE.  And on top of it, I later learn that it was my fault.  I was the one who grounded mysterious pin 9 on the USB header...  It was how the case came set up---you know with the front USB ports...
    4.  I also know that MSI's boards are the most stable I've seen .  I've helped other students with home built PC's who use Gigabyte, ASUS, Abit, ECS...  and I've seen trouble with all of them.
    5.  Stick with it.  Don't give up.  Get your board and if need be your proc. replaced, and move on.  This board is worth it.  It is so nice.  I have had my machine on for two weeks straight.  Running XP PRO.  Nothing but solid.
    6.  WHY DOES EVERYONE BLAME EVERYTHING ON THE PSU???  I have used cheap-o 300W generic supplies (granted, I have never owned or set-up a GF4) but plain and simply put, I have not had any stable problems with MSI boards and cheap power supplies.  MSI does an excellent job with their power stabilization portion of the board, and design their boards around imperfect voltages.  Nothing is perfect.  "30 amps", that's rediculous.
Anyway, I hope that I have changed a few minds about MSI and their boards, and that you will take the time to get your problem resolved.  If you do, you will do just like me, and return to MSI for all of your computing mainboard needs.

  • Problems w/ KT3 Ultra2 w/R

I think the best thing to do it's to explain the problem from the beginning.
A couple of months ago I bought my computer by components and put it togheter myself. Everything was fine, but there was a problem. Back then, my mobo was an ABIT KX7333R and it wouldn't boot if I changed the processor speed in the bios (it booted allright with the defalut -XP 1500- but when changed it to the real one -XP 2000- it didn't boot at all). So I used it for about 3 weeks with the default setting (I was too lazy at that moment to change the damn thing) and one night, the computer died while I was using it. Anyway, I assumed twas the mobo, so I requested a RMA from Abit, and had my motherboard replaced. The replacement worked fine for about 10 minutes, and when I was writing an email, puff, died again. At that time I was swearing and cursing, and blamed Abit. By then, I was tired of waiting and everything (just got stressed) so I ordered an MSI KT3 Ultra2 with raid. When I first booted the PC, the motherboard didn't recognized my HDD when I entered the Bios. I tried restarting, but the pc would not respond. So I checked the D-Bracket lights and they say that the problem was in the IDE controller or device. So I replaced my HDD with another one, but nothing happened.
    So, my questions are:
1- Am I the guy with the worst luck in the world and got three defective motherboards in a row?
2- Could it be that something else in my PC is causing the problem?
If you have any questions, please post it here and I'll answer them. Here it's my computer components:
    Athlon XP 2000
    MSI KT3 Ultra2
    Gainward GF4 TI4200
    SB Audigy Gamer
    3COM Ethernet card
Corsair XMS PC2700 512MB (Silver heatspreader)
    Turbolink 420W PS
    Lite-On CDRW
    PS: Sorry for the length...

Have you tried with another CPU ? If not, please do so ; or return the CPU for RMA.

  • KT3 Ultra2 won't run XP 2500 at more than 151 Mhz

Not an unusual topic I know but I haven't found any solutions in this forum as yet!
With my XP 2000 cpu installed my system is stable when the FSB is overclocked to 150 Mhz.  When I install the XP 2500 cpu and set the FSB in the BIOS (latest vertsion) to 166 Mhz it won't access the hard drives at all.  My initial thought was the psu so I reduced the system to 1 hdd, 1 DVD rewriter, 256Mb memory and tried again.  No change!  Then I started reducing the FSB until at 151 Mhz it would boot but as an XP 1900 cpu.  The VIA chipset drivers are up to date.
I' don't know what to try next.  Any ideas?

I can only say, I'm running my KT3 Ultra2 with XP 2800+ without any problem at 333 Mhz. Remember you have to upgrade Bios with ver 5.7 so Mobo can work with a 166 FSB. Also, better try starting with only one memory module. You can take a look at my P.S. specs. on my sig. It's not too good, but enough for this rig. So, don't dispose yet your 2500+, try and tell us how did it go.

yes, if you buy a SATA2 add-in controller card, then you can use it with SATA2 drives

  • Help...KT3-Ultra2 and Hard drive problems

Hello, I'm new to this board.  I've been having an issue with hard drives lately.   I have an MSI KT3-ultra2 with the latest BIOS version installed.  I recently had a hard drive get completely erased and the actually size of it (10gig) had changed to 1 gig.  Just prior to that I got a corrupted file error in a game I was playing.  (The 10gig HD was a storage drive).  My main drive (Maxtor 40gig) started to clunk and whine and then eventually the computer would lock up hard.  I assumed the HD was going bad and was the cause of all the corruption.  So I went and bought a new WD Hard drive 80 gig.  Had it for about 2 weeks now and now all of a sudden I'm getting a similar clicking noise and a whine and then it locks up on me.  I can only run my computer for about 10 to 20 minutes before it locks up.  I have changed IDE cables to see if they were the cause and that didn't solve the problem.  I've also disconnected all my CD drives and still nothing.  I am going to take a guess and assume there is something wrong with my MB.  IDE controler perhaps?  Can anyone help me with this or confirm my thoughts on the situation?  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

May be your powersupply is faulty. Or the memory? try to get it checked

  • BIOS Settings Problem on KT3 Ultra2 MS-6380E with Barton 3000+(FSB333)

Well, I finally got my Barton 3000+ with 333 MHz FSB and installed it yesterday in my MSI KT3 Ultra2 Mainboard....
    System Before changing anything:
    PSU: DTK  400 W
    +3.3 V / 22 A
    +5 V / 35 A
    +12 V / 15 A
    -5 V / 0.5 A
    -12 V / 0.8 A
    +5 V VSB / 3 A
So that should make up 400 W as far as I know, my total System drain should be around 300-350 W so even if it would not suffice 400 W it should run the system ?
    Mainboard: KT3 Ultra 2 (BIOS v5.7)
CPU: AMD XP 2100 FSB 133 MHz
    RAM: 1.536 MB, 3x512 MB Infineon PC3200 (400MHz) CL 3-3-3-8 @400MHz, Cl2.5-3-3-7@333Mhz, 2-2-2-6@266MHz
VGA: MSI RX-9800 Pro 128 MB
    DVD/CD-R/RW-Combo: Plextor PX-708 (Firmware 1.08)
    CD-R/RW: TEAC CD-W540E (Firmware 1.0K)
Storage: Western Digital WD800BB (80 GB) (Firmware 17.07W17)
    USB-Storage: Maxtor 4 K080 H4 (80 GB)
Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 172T with Driver Version 1.0
Printer: HP Deskjet 970Cxi with Original HP Driver Version 4.3
OS: Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4
BIOS Settings: SDRAM 1T Command: "Disabled" It won't work stable with 3 RAM's in it with that setting, but that I did know before.
    CPU Fast Command: "Ultra"
System was running stable for nearly 2 years with this Configuration:
    So now it goes:
First I changed the CPU form my old AMD XP 2100+ to the new Barton 3000 + with its new Arctic Cool Copper Silent 2TC.
Then I went into BIOS and raised the FSB to 166 MHz, which should be the correct one, or do I have to put 167 MHz in there (since 166.666666 MHz is rounded to 167)?
Then I exited and watched the restart...but it didn't start-up it only got me 3 long beeps at the HOST.
After some whining and beating I plugged out anything and cleared CMOS and started the whole thing again:
    System after Clearing CMOS:
    Mainboard: KT3 Ultra 2 (BIOS v5.7)
CPU: AMD XP 3000+  FSB 100 MHz
RAM: 1x512 MB Infineon PC3200 CL 2-3-3-7 (BIOS setting CAS Latency by "SPD")
Storage: Western Digital WD800BB (80 GB) (Firmware 17.07W17)
Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 172T with Driver Version 1.0
OS: Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4
With all Default settings, the Computer boots up, and is correctly Recognized as a Barton 1300 MHz.
When increasing FSB to 133 MHz it is correctly displayed as a Barton 2200+
    NOW...
...after adding one BIOS setting after another I narrowed the problem down to the "CPU Fast Command (decode)" Function...if set to Ultra it does not boot-up when running 166 MHz FSB, it does not even let me into BIOS. I have to clear CMOS and restart from scratch again...
Is this normal and expectable with a Barton 3000+ running at the native 166 MHz FSB or not ?
Since my system before was running on "Ultra" with my old AMD XP 2100+.
There is only one more thing I noticed, the CPU V-Core is shown to be only 1.616 V (setting on "Auto" but it should be 1.65 V ? Should I increase the V-Core to 1.675 V in order to get closer to 1.65 V or shouldn't I worry about ?
Thanks for any Input you can give me on the problem.

Iscaran, you are indeed correct in the statement which you made

This setting can be set to fast/ultra on the KT3 Ultra2 when using PC2100 ram running at 266. However, when using PC2700 ram running at 333, this setting MUST be set to normal for the satisfactory operation of the board. I know that you have PC3200 ram actually installed but it is only running at 333.

    Yes, absolutely normal

How are you measuring this ie Bios or o/s utility? Not unknown that these are incorrect. However, if you feel unhappy about this, try setting the V-core manually to 1.65v and check what this gives.
    Quote
So 3.3 V x 22 A gives 72.6 W, that could be really a little cutting the edge. Could that cause the board to not respond when setting the "CPU Fast Command" to "Ultra" ?
Getting a more powerful psu will not likely cure this well documented problem.
However, this board mostly draws power from the 3.3 & 5v rails. The 12v is mostly used to power HDD, optical and fans. When you consider that 128Mb of ram draws about 8-10w from the 5v rail and you have a total of 1.5Gb that adds up to 96-120W of juice just for the memory alone. This board will beep at you at o/s level when it's running underpowered but my opinion is the same as osnavi's your 3.3v & 5v rails are too low. Also what is combined 3.3v & 5v wattage. What kind of reading do you get on monitoring utilities.
By the way I have as you can see from my dets below the same board and cpu as you and when I changed from a XP2000 Palomino with PC2100 ram to XP3000 Barton and PC3200, I changed the 'Fast Command' setting from 'Fast' to 'Normal'
Hope this helps, enjoy the board

  • What RAM for KT3 Ultra2-R

    Currently I have:
    1 x Samsung PC2700 256MB CAS 2.5
I want to upgrade to 512MB. I could get another stick of Samsung, but I would prefer to have it on 1 stick, plus there is only 1 place I can find in the UK that sells them and I'd prefer not to deal with them.
So I'm thinking Crucial would be a good choice, as lots of people recommend them and they will refund/exchange if anything goes pear shaped.
    512MB DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 6ns • 2.5V • 64Meg x 64
    £116.09
Doesn't sound too bad to me. Has anyone had trouble with Crucial RAM on the KT3?
I've also noticed that Corsair do PC3000, 3200 and now 3500 CAS2 modules. Firstly, can my board handle them, and would there be a noticeable difference between them and the Crucial?
    System spec:
    AMD XP2200+ TBred A
    MSI KT3 Ultra2-R
    Samsung PC2700 256MB CAS 2.5
    Geforce 2 Ti
300W PSU (soon to be Enermax 430W)

    Hi,
I suppose you realise that you can't install multiple sticks of high speed RAM and maintain the memory bus speed that would be indicated by the RAM speed?
Because of issues with the VIA chipset and others, the timing control of the memory bus is basically, barely under control and can only cope with a single stick of high speed RAM at the nominal RAM speed, say DDR400. Each additional stick will "clock-down" the memory bus to the next lower default setting, ie two sticks - DDR333, three sticks - DDR266.
It all seems rather unsatisfactory and in reality, it is but there is little to be done at the moment until such time as VIA and others develop chipsets that can properly cope with the demands of genuine high speed RAM.
So, I guess this means that if you want to increase your RAM size and maintain the highest possible memory bus speed, you are limited to a single stick of 512MB, 1GB (if they're out there). I've heard and read patchy reports of the performance of Crucial RAM and as a result, would not really recommend it. Corsair on the other hand, is very well engineered and manufactured and I would not hesitate to recommend their products in whatever combination of speed/size that you wanted to use. Hope that helps some,
    Cheerio,
    Dimal.

  • Mobile 2500 overclocking problems with KT3 Ultra2

First off sorry for my poor english.. it's not my first language.  Now here's my system:
    CPU: Mobile 2500
    HSF: Vantec Aeroflow with AS5
    MB: MSI KT3 Ultra2
    RAM: 2x512MB PC2700
    VIDEO: Leadtek GeForce 4 TI4200
The temperature is about 43C cpu and 40C case when the system is idle and it can get to 50C cpu and 43C case when the system is on maximum use.
So here's the situation...  I adjust the bus speed from 133 to 166 mhz..  I put the vcore voltage at 1.675 which is the maximum I can choose in the bios..  The multiplier is stuck on 14x..  When I try to run Prime95 or 3dmark03 my system is very unstable..  In prime95, one time it stopped after 10 minutes, the other time after 40 minutes.  In 3dmark03, I tried it at least five times and it usually stops during the second run of the tests.
I'm very disappointed because I read a lot about this cpu before buying it and everyone was overclocking it easily so I had no doubt it would get to 166 mhz especially with proper cooling..  It sucks pretty bad!
I hope some of you have some advices or suggestions on what I could try to make it work..  You are my last hope!  Thanks in advance!!

Here comes another update...  Keep in mind that my cpu is currently at 14x166=2337 mhz.   I did some benchmark today and the results are starting to give me hope..  first I ran Prime95 for 14 hours without errors on the custom test with 2048-4096.  During this testing, the voltage went like this: 3.3V = 3.22V , 5V = 4.95V , 12V = 12.28V.  Is it normal?  Does it mean my power supply is good enough?  The specifications of the Power supply are : 3.3V-20A , 5V-30A , 12V-15A.  After that I ran all 3dmark03 tests three times without any glitches..  Then I played Far cry for about 20-30 minutes without any problems either.
Now what I'm wondering is if I run Prime95 without any problems but that 3dmark03 works sometimes and fail sometimes, can it help you guys to tell me what could be causing the instability?
Thank you again for all your help!
