KT4 Ultra and PC3200 speed detect problem
Hi all,
I am new to the forum, having just bought a KT4 Ultra for my new system. It features the following components:
KT4 Ultra (sorry not sure of model number as I'm posting from work, but I checked for BIOS updates and there's only one which looks like a USB2 compatibility fix)
1 stick of 512Mb PC3200 memory
AMD 2700XP+ (333FSB) CPU
ATI Radeon 9000 128Mb (this will do until DX9 cards available
Intel 100 Pro network card for my ADSL hub (my KT4 did not come with onboard network socket)
350W power supply
Win2K Pro SP3
I have two problems. One is that the machine won't ever shutdown - it always reboots. Having done a search of this forum, I will check the "Wake on LAN" settings in the BIOS as of course, plugged into an ADSL router, the LAN+WAN is constantly live... so I'm hoping that will be fixed later today....
But, the second problem is one of performance - in that with the initial auto detect settings, the BIOS found a 1500+ CPU and 400Mhz memory. When I manually change the bus speed to 166, the CPU is recognised correctly as a 2700, but the memory dropped down to 333Mhz speed. If I then disable the autodetect for the memory and manualyl set 400Mhz and CAS2 speed, I can't even get to the BIOS screen on bootup. I get 4 or 5 short beeps, nothing on the display and need to short pins 2+3 of JCAT1 to reset to factory defaults.
Any idea how I can get my PC to boot with the correct speed memory (ie PC3200@400)?
Thanks for any tips,
Mike.
Hi
I have the same problem when I set FSB to 200Mhz - DDR to 400Mhz and on boot screen i always see DDR 333.
I make a test and when I use 152Mhz FSB (or up) DDR Always is 333Mhz no maters than in Bios is saved DDR400.
My system is
t-bred 1700+ (133x10.5) fabrique unlocked
MSK kt4 ultra (6590)
bios v1.1
256mb ddr 400 samsung c3
msi g4200td 128mb
60gb maxtor diamond max
I make some tests
CPU on 200Mhz FSB x 8.5 multiplier, or 8 or 7.5 or 7 (1.575V)
MEM always show DDR333
WHY ?
It is possible to run FSB/MEM sincrhony on 200Mhz ?
I also make a mem tests with Sandra 2003 when
I use 200Fsb x 8.5 and Bios DDR 333 and
200Fsb x 8.5 and Bios DDR 400
the results is the same .
I'm sure that On boot Screen DDR information is right.
and always DDR is on 333 mhz wneh FSB is more than 152mhz No mather what you set in Bios ( 266 or 333 or 400)
And other strange thing is:
with my previous locked XP 1600+ (10.5 x 133) I can run on 166FSB / MEM with this DDR (samsung) on max aggressive settings 2.5 2-5-2 1 Ultra
now with my new CPU i can't run on 166FSB less tnah 3 3-6-3 2 Normal ?
Thanks in advance.

True, IF the specs are presented that way. Some obviously are, some obviously are not, and others can't even be deduced with a decent degree of certainty. It definately does not apply to power supplies such as Antec's truepower models however, as +3.3 is not derived from +5, where the load of one doesn't effect on the other.
What I'm saying is that there are no standards that PSU manufacturer's stick to when presenting their specs. Its buyer beware. Without knowing the simultaneous load conditions they used, third party calculations are no more than educated guesses based on assumptions, and we both did that. -
KT4 Ultra and PNY 8x Ti4200 Problems!!
I am having alot of trouble getting these two to cooperate. I have installed the latest drivers, and the latest WHQL drivers, for the video card and updated DirectX. Unfortunately, nothing seems to work. I am not a gamer, so I don't have alot of experience with nicer video cards. Anyway, here's what is happening:
When doing certain tasks (one of which is accessing a Microsoft Outlook Web Access webpage with IE), the computer completely locks up. If I access that same webpage with Netscape, it's fine. Now, here's how I know it's the video card or the motherboard. When I go into display properties, advanced, troubleshooting, if I 'downselect' to disable 'DirectDraw and Direct3D hardware acceleration', everything works fine. Any ideas?Ah, sorry about that. I was so frustrated last night that I completely forgot. My system is:
Athlon 2200+
MSI KT4 Ultra
Netgear Network Card
Onboard Sound (CMI)
Liteon 52x CD Writer
Western Digital 180 Gig HD
Antec 300 Watt True Power PS
I would've thought the Antec would be more than sufficient. I can try putting in a 400 or 450 to see what it does, I suppose... Before I shell out the money for that, I'll wait for other suggestions. I was hoping I had a setting fouled up somewhere. :( -
MSI KT4 ultra and AMD ATHLON 2600+ and Corsair 512Mb 3200
Hello,
i've bought a: MSI KT4 ULTRA and a AMD ATHLON 2600+
Today, i've updated the bios to the version 1.3! So: no problem to reboot after the process complete.
BUT, now i can't set the CPU at 2.16Ghz (280Mhz clock) because if i set the clock up to 100Mhz it doesn't reboot anymore! the motherboard detect the frequency @ 1250 Mhz :(((
Please: HELP ME
(sorry for the grammar and / the english) but i'm a french guy.Hi,
I had the same issues, see the thread:
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/viewindex.php?threadid=11717&boardid=13&styleid=1
Essentially I had to set (in the BIOS) the FSB to 166 and left the Multiplier on auto. This ment the processor was reported properly as 2600+, but the memory will only run at 333 MHz... Yeah I think I wasted the money on getting the latest and greatest memory too....
Had me worried for a while, I though my supplier had palmed a bad chip off on me.... It just that the board can't do the highest speed chips and the highest speed memory at the same time (it states that that is unsupported in the manual...)
hope the helps... -
Kt4 ultra bios 1.3 ati problem
I updated my bios a while ago and when i did i noticed pixels in weird places. I updated from 1.2 i was having problems with crc errors, after that i couldnt run any driver verision on my ati 8500le above 2.5 so i couldnt run 3.0a 3.1. i was just checking if anyone else had these problems when updating to 1.3 on there kt4 ultra. and i flahed twice the first time i thought it was a bad flash or something. i was running 3.0 and downgraded. i am hoping msi will fix this issue but who knows. overclocked or under clocked i still have the problem.
i am running 2.13GHz overclocked from 1.73
kt4ultra
768 ddr400 running at 333MHz
ati 8500leI've done that, but the problem still exist.
I think it's more like a BIOS problem since there's no problem when I'm runnign 1.1 instead of 1.3 -
KT4 Ultra and FastTrak 376 issues.

any help would be greatly appreciated
thx alot )NEVER HAPPENED TO ME. TRY DISCONNECTING ALL IDE DEVICES, CLEAR THE CMOS AND PRESS DEL BEFORE THE PROMISE BIOS LOADS.
MAYBE YOU'LL GET INSIDE TO DEACTIVATE IT FROM LOADING AT INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS - ONBOARD PCI CONTROLLER - SEARIAL ATA CONTROLLER.
DO YOU HAVE AN SATA HDD? YOU COULD USE ONE FOR TRYING TO SETUP AN ARRAY IN THE PROMISE BIOS (BY PRESSING CTRL+F AND THEN CHOOSE THE AUTO CONFIGURATION). AFTER THAT MAYBE YOU CAN ENTER THE BIOS.
YOU CAN ALSO TRY TO FIND AN MODDED BIOS FOR THE KT4-ULTRA THAT DOES NOT LOAD THE PROMISE SATA BIOS BY DEFAULT. -
KT4 Ultra FISR AGP Speed Problem
Hi all,
I've got a bit of a problem and was wondering if someone can help?
I have bought the KT4 Ultra FISR and am having a problem when trying to use it with my 8x AGP Nvidia ge Force 4 ti 4200 but the bois wont let me change the AGP speed to 8x, it insists that the highest it can go is 4x. ;(
I have run the newest 3DMark03 and it's showing that my AGP is only 2.0 and not the 3.0 that is meant to be with the board?
I was wondering if this is the problem?
I have double checked with the Graphics Card Manufacturer and they have confirmed that my card is an 8x card and I know that it was running at 8x on my last board.
I have done all of the Auto updates on the MSI motherbaord update utility but there's still no joy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
- RickyHi there
Well I have the Inno36 Ti 4200 8x AGP card:
http://www.ivmm.com/inno3d/geforce4/products_gf4_ti_agp8x_reviews.html
I know it's not the best card on the market but it should still be able to operate at it's advertised speed :P
A couple of the guys here at EA bought the card and theres are working fine on thier boards :(
I am not totally sure of the version number of my bios but does 1.3 ring a bell?
I wont be able to check the version till monday...
Like I said before.. I did notice that 3dmark03 noted that I was using agp 2.0, is that right?

P.s. Thankyou for taking the time to help me out Its much appreciated. -
Problem with KT4 Ultra and XP 2700
First excuse my bad english (i'm from Germany)!!
I have a heavy problem with my KT4 Ultra.
First my system:
AMD Athlon XP 2700
Mainboard: MSI KT4 Ultra (MS-6590) Bios vers. 1.1
MSI Geforce 4 Ti 4200 64 Mb
512 Mb DDR Ram Apacer Technology 512 MB 16x(32mx8)DDR-SDRAM PC2700U-2533-700(CL2.5 upto 167MHz)(CL2 upto 133MHz
Sound : Onboard
GlobalWIN CAK38 II Kupfer
Powersupply: Levicom 420W
Win XP SP1
Now the problen:
When i turn the FSB in the Bios up to 166MHz
the system crashes on Windows startupscreen!!
I've turned the FSP clock down to 164 MHz and Windows starts. But when i runned 3DMark2001 it crashes back to desktop !!
Then i turned the FSB clock down to 159 MHz and the system runns stabile!!
Now what i've already tried:
Turned down Ram timings and frequency (same prob.)
No heatproblem (CPU at 118.f)
Had the same system exapt an XP1800 instead an XP2700 and no problems!!
Called the MSI hotline (Germany) and they told me to type the FSB manually in the Bios (insted of numblock +and -). ?(
Still the same problem !! ;(
Has anyone the same problem as i ???
THX !!Hi,
I would try other ram....
Or start from BIOS default settings and only change CPU-FSB....
See what happens... -
KT4 Ultra and a PNY GF2 TI 64 meg power problem
Okay here is my problem...
I have a KT4 Ultra with athlon 2400+ and 512 of 333mhz 2700 DDR Ram.
I also have a True430 430 watt psu from antec.
I installed the motherboard and proc and everything else fine. Stick in the PNY geforce 2 TI 64 meg card in. Plug power cord in and hit the powr button nothing..
I know I have all the power connections hooked up corretly.
So I get a TNT 2 M64 and pop it in and the machine boots up fine and I can do everything normal.. any ideas??!?!Did the PSU even start and the fan spins? Or it's a totally DEAD machine?
This could either be
1. the card is 3.3V/1.5V and the board refuse to run with it.
2. the card when slotted in has shorted some part of the casing.
We can't do anything if this is an incompatibility issue. My last suggestion would be - change the display card or the motherboard. -

I have just purchased a KT4 Ultra (MS 6590) motherboard and have a real problem.
I also have a Western Digital Hard Drive (WD100JB)
Unfortunatly there appears no way that this board (or its BIOS) will accept this drive.
As soon as I get to POST it fails to recognise the drive when connected properly with all jumpers in the correct positions.
So I then dissconnected all other drives and just set it to Master on IDE 1 and it did detect it but then said it was incompatable and failed to boot up.
I was unable to boot up at all even setting the BIOS to Default.
I placed this drive back in my other PC and it booted first time.
Whats the problem ...? any ideas?
Thanks
PeteYeh Ive's tried all these things including removing the BIOS battery
The problem I have with this board is that it will not use any Hard Drive !.
What hapens is that the Drive is detected OK in the BIOS.
It then tries to go to POST and BOOT and returns an Error saying "Atapi incompatable HD" !
I have tried different drives and still get the same result !.
I have changed the cables and also tried setting the drive to “Master” with no other drives on the computer but it still comes up with the "Atapi incompatable HD " ! Error
I think there must be a BIOS problem not loading drivers for ATAPI devices or something like that'Any Ideas?
This board is brand new straight out of the box? -
I have a KT4 Ultra that supports SATA Raid and Im looking at getting a new HDD. CAn I run my old PATA HDD with a SATA HDD without it being in raid format or do the disk have to be in a raid format.
Hey guys, how about this:
MSI KT4 Ultra SR, Win2000, PDC 20376 Promise Serial ATA chip on board. WD 40gig IDE hd as primary on IDE 1. Attached a Maxtor 120gig SATA to the Serial ATA 1 connector. While booting did NOT setup an array. Windows 2000 in Disk Management under Device Manager/Disk Drives has now two folders, one for the WD and one that says SCSI Disk Device. It's also also recognized under System Information/Components/Storage as SCSI controlled by the Fast Track 376 controller. Is this a proper way to setup the serial Maxtor as an extra single drive in the system attached to the Serial interface? Is this even possbile? My problem is that while the drive is recognized as a SCSI disk device as described above, it is NOT seen under Disk Management as a new unformatted drive with a new letter. Assuming the above setup is correct, how do I format the drive so Windows can use it? Any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you. -

- 1 hdd 80 GB Ata 133 P.S.
- 1 hdd 60 GB Ata 133 Ata Raid
- 1 DVD rom S.M.
- 1 Yamaha F1 S.S.
Bye...!
Excuseme for my english I'm Italian and speak so so the language...Okay, I assume the new 1.4 bios they are working on will address this problem? Or perhaps not? This problem as I see has been discovered last year, yet how many bios updates were released since? None of them remidying this situation.
The KT4 Ultra FISR is a really nice mainboard, but the lack of support and/or broken LAN controller really makes it look bad.
Flashing the bios and clearing the cmos simply wont work. This shouldnt be necessary when the LAN just dissapears on its own without any cause. If it isnt a bios bug, then its clearly a board flaw.
Is that why this problem has been covered up quite well? If there hasent been a bios fix, then i would guess that it is a flaw that is still not being publicly made by MSI themselves.
If theres a known fault with a product, i expect to be known about it. This problem has shown up enough to be a known flaw.
No, checking the winblows "device manager/tackler" wont show it, clearing the cmos wont show it, flashing the bios 10000 times wont make it show either. The device doesnt even exist on the mainboards pci table, its gone, not there, poof, kapoot, vanished.

edit:
Yes the IEEE1394 and RAID controller isnt there, thats because it is disabled in the bios, and can be reenabled just as easily, unlike the Broadcom LAN controller, that isnt even there to enable anyways. -
KT4 Ultra and new Serial ATA drive
Hi there
I've got a WinXP machine with a KT4 ultra, 2 regular IDE hard drives, a CD write and DVD (all working fine).
Yesterday I bought a Serial ATA DiamondMax Plus9 160Gb to use as a 3rd drive. I don't want it to use RAID, I just want it as an additional drive available to windows.
I fitted the drive last night, but when the BIOS runs through the drives at the start it didn't show up. I did however get the RAID utility come up on the screen, and by pressing Ctrl-F it allowed me to create a RAID array (which I didn't).
When I got into windows the drive couldn't be seen, running Maxblaster found a SCSI drive but thought it was 0 bytes capacity.
Can anyone tell me if what I want to do is even possible?
And if so, how do it do it?
Thanks in advance
RichHi Sharp, thanks for the info.
I have the promise drivers installed, so there really shouldn't be a problem there.
Having scanned through a load of other messages on here, updating the BIOS has been recommended.
I was a bit wary of doing this as I have a history of messing up machines, what are other's experiences with upgrading the BIOS?
Thanks again

KT4 Ultra and XP2000 Crashes at 133fsb
My system runs fine at 100fsb with clock multiplier set to 12.5 giving me 1250 Mhz, but when I set my FSB 133 the system crashes. I've tried setting it with the fuzzy logic and in the bios. Each time it resulted in a black screen and I had to short the cmos to get it back.
Also How do you add the system info tag?

- +5 and +3.3 V Combined 190 wattI have exactly the same problems here, system runs ok at 100fsb, but it isn't on 133.
I was thinking of a cooling problem already so this is clear to me now.
However one problem remains and that concerns the RAID option! Believe me or not, but currently this option is faded out in the BIOS (1.3) and therefore no bootable devices can be discovered also setting the option "Try other bootable devices" to YES does not work. If I start messings with the CMOS settings the RAID option might return after saving the adjustments and rebooting. While booting up the Fastrak376 is either present or gone.
Currently I have just a Matrox G400 MAX in the AGP slot and none of my PCI devices are used. Further two IDE devices (Maxtor 80gig DX740-L) are hooked up, one to SATA (with converter) and the other to PATA so it shouldn't be an IRQ issue.
I already cleared the CMOS using the jumpers and switching " on " the machine, did a NVRAM clearance and that didn't work either. Setting Plug and Play OS to DISABLED worked out once but after making some adjustments to the BIOS settings the RAID disappeared ever since ..
However I was able to install Windows XP once and as you probably can figure it took me two days getting the RAID option to work, apparently another BUG in the KT4? ?(
Unfortunately now I am stuck since no RAID for the time being ... Hope one can help since once again MSI does not respond to my emails... ... :O

Is there a way in photoshop to link the color swatches with their name ? I am doing design recoloration, and would need the name of each color to be written under the color palet on the cad, as I change the colors.... probably not possible, but
