KT4 Ultra MB: Replacing the AGP 8X North Bridge Fan

Opened a friend's PC this afternoon to add an ethernet card and 1Gb memory and unsurprisingly found it was dust-bound. Whilst attemtping to clean the north bridge fan (45mm AGP 8X) I noticed it wasn't turning very freely - in fact it wouldn't turn at all when I powered it back up. Trouble is I haven't a clue how to remove it to replace it! This tiny fan appears to have two diagonally opposed spring-loaded pins, the other diagonal having two miniscule screws which just keep turning, but not releasing anything.
I realise this is a very old board, but can anyone suggest how to remove this fan? Just a thought; I imagine this fan has not been working properly (at all?) for sometime - so is a replacement vital?

You know when you have a toothache but you get to the dentist there's no sign of pain - well this chipset fan has started to work again!
Thanks eagle for your response - I'll get a passive heatsink and replace fan anyway - but what a nuisance to have to take MB out to do so!

North bridge fan & SFAN1

How come when i plug my fan onto SFAN1 i can view its RPM in the bios under North Bridge Fan BUT CoreCenter still reads 0rpm. Also, is it possible to have Cool N' QUiet control SFAN1, PWFAN1, and PWFAN2??

and I don't see the rpm of the cpu-fan in the bios, but I do see it in Corecenter? I have bios 1.1

Replace the North Bridge fan Heatsink

Tought the MEGA PC isnt quiet enough, seems to be the North Brige fan who always goes on the same speed. One tougth is the following;
Is a Zalman North Bridge Heatsink good enough to replace the North Bridge fan on a MEGA PC? It seems to be enougt height if you skip the idea of a secondary IDE drive. Or are there some better 3rd party noise killer fans available for the North Bridge?

Did all KT6-FISR have north bridge fan

I've just bought a KT6-FISR brand new. The first thing I've noticed is that the north bridge has a heat sink on it, but no fan. Neither is there a fan in the box.
Did all KT6-FISR have a north bridge fan as standard?
Is it fitted onto the heatsink on delivery, or does the user have to fit it?
I'm just wondering whether it has been taken from the box by 'someone' at the computer shop.

I depends on what MSI included in that particular bundle as it isn't the same for every board the SR/LSR I know probably wouldn't have it the FISR could have it though still doubtful only the top of the rung FIS2R would be the one that should have it no questions asked. Now the heatsink on fanless boards will do just fine the fan is tiny noisy at times, and isn't needed in fact I'm replacing my northbridge HSF with a Zalman fanless one.

North bridge fan leds don't work

Hello to everyone!!!! :biggthumbsup:I have one small query!Recently i installed creative soundblaster audigy 2 zs pci card onto my pc.Some days later i observed that the (6?) leds on the north bridge fan didn't work and so do now.
Is there an explanation for that?I also did a format before the installation of the sound card,however, i don't know which is the reason

That technician is trying to pull you off by giving these irrelavent reasons.
Yes, the sound will be disabled if a PCI sound card is added in, but what has it got to do with the NB Fan . Your technician really beats me to this point... as I've never come across anybody giving such an excuse before
It's good that you RMA the mobo instead of going back to that technician again ... He got to start brushing up on things like this

North bridge fan

Seems like the nb fan on my neo2 is always running at it's top speed (~5200 rpm). It should throttle down to a lower speed at times, shouldn't it?

Well I discovered through the process of elimination that the nb fan at 100% is really not that loud and thus wasn't the source of all this damn fan noise. It's my evga 6800gt that's relatively quite loud. Any suggestions?

Kt4 ultra + onboard cmi8738 + gforce fx 5200

I'm currently using a kt4 ultra mainboard with the onboard sound (cmi 8738) enabled and a gforce fx5200. The onboard sound controller is using spdif out. My problem is when i play some music and do some intensive 3D stuff, or play a intensive game the audio cuts/stutters. I'm using WINXP and noticed that agp and sound share the same IRQ. I searched google.com and i noticed this is cause the ACPI stuff witch controls irq assigment to spare some. I disabled this in bios, reinstalled WINXP with standard-pc HAL butt didn't managed to separate the agp from sound irq.
My question: how can i seperate agp and sound from using the same irq. I didn't find any option in the bios that allows me to change the irq of the agp or to change the irq from the onboard sound controller.
btw: i'm not planning to buy a new " external " soundcard, i want this to work! i payed enough for this fancy msi mainboard with onboard sound so I want to be able to use it.

I played around with the PCI latency, no result :(
My current setup:
kt4 ultra
athlon xp 2000+
256 mb memory
msi gforce 5200 fx
onboard cmi8738 enabled (spdif/out)
winxp professional + latest drivers liveupdate2 + latest bios versions
Problem: sound stutters/cuts/stops when moving "windows" in windows XP or when playing or using 3D stuff. Already replaced gforce fx5200 with older riva tnt2 = same problems.
Anyone got a clue? Or anyone knows how to seperate agp/sound irq?

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and kt4 ultra

i was curious to know of any problems with the Kt4 ultra motherboard and the Radeon 9800 pro??
my system constantly crashes back to the desktop, or completely locks when i play Command & Conquer Renegade.
there are also some "misdrawn?" walls in the game also,...
i have all the latest drivers for the motherboard and the card,(including the released today catalyst drivers from ati.com)
i have also tried the drivers from driverheaven.net, but same thing happens,...
this is truly aggreviating...

2500+ barton running at 11.5*173 @ 30c idle, 33c full load
corsair 2*256 3200LL
built by ati radeon 9800 pro 128mb
ive read where you can increase the agp voltage to try and fix the problem...and i also saw where one guy was just going to buy another motherboard b/c of the issues...

FWIW, in case anybody is reading this thread in future and has problems with this Board and this card, I can report that I have now(at my second attempt) successfully installed a Radeon 9800 Pro on MY kt4 uLTRA motherboard.
As noted above, I purchased a new Antec True Power unit, prior to installing for a 2nd time. I am not sure whether that was necessary, but it certainly didn't hurt. The successful installation process was as follows:
1) Download the latest catalyst drivers from ATI
2) Set monitor to lowest possible standard (640 x 480, 16 colours if possible - in my case my digital monitor could not be set lower than 800 x 600)
3) Uninstall drivers for existing video card
4) Replace video card
5) Install ATI drivers
6) restore settings on monitor to maximum.
At that point, after restarting the computer, I had a CLI.exe error. After Googling for this problem, I discovered that I needed to download Net 1.1 from Microsoft. After downloading and installing that additional program, Radeon 9800 Pro is now working perfectly.

KT4 Ultra FISR Upgrade

I have the KT4 Ultra-FISR with the Via KT400 chipset. I just read on Via's site that the KT400a is available and it is a pin to pin replacement to the 400. My question is, is there a way that MSI can provide the chipset upgrade (cost is not an issue) or will the upgrade of existing boards be available? Some of the benchmarks for the 400a show a marked improvement over the 400. Thank you in advance for any help.

KT4 Ultra N/B Fan - prob w/heatsink clips

?( I'm trying to install a North Bridge fan on my new KT4 Ultra. Can't find any physical installation instructions in the FAQs or Tech Support.
How do I remove the existing spring clips on the North Bridge heatsink? My N/B fan kit has thermal phase change pads and fan with 3-pin power connector.
I don't want to force the spring clips or stress the mobo. I need to re-use the existing spring clips to mount the N/B fan. Should I just pull upward on the clips or try to push them up from the bottom of the mobo? -- Or is there some "magic grip"???
Sometimes working inside PCs makes me feel uncoordinated . Despite years of experience, there's always a new "gotcha". TIA for your suggestions.

push and pull as you do and they will pop back
they hold by splaying out behind the board

Another KT4 Ultra + 9700 Pro problem

Having invested nearly 300 quid on a Radeon 9700 PRo (Powercolor Evil commando 2) I decided to buy a new mobo with 8X AGP. I opted for the MSI KT4 Ultra, cos I already had a MS-6340 V5.0 it seemed a good/reliable choice. I went ahead and bought a KT4 Ultra. This arrived a couple of weeks ago.
I was awaiting a new CPU/fan (2200+) and new PSU so, I hadnt been able to build my new system up. In the meantime I had been keenly watching the forums re: KT4 /9700 problems.
When i came to put my system together, this is what i found:
1. System wouldnt boot up at all.
- So I took out the 9700 and put in a GF2, and the machine booted ok.
Installed latest via drivers, C-Media drivers using live update.
Upgraded Bios to 1.1
2. Im using a trial version of XP, which had 13 days (IRONIC) before activation was required. When I rebooted after BIOS upgrade, Windows insisted on instant activation of the product key and wouldnt load Arrrrghhhh!
After a re-install of XP I still was left with the same problem. The 9700 wouldnt work at all.
I checked the bios settings, and changed the FSB from 100 to 166 ( i have 512Mb DDR333 ) - no change.
AGP settings on auto, 128Mb Apperture
I had seen other with problems getting the 8X AGP to work with this mobo, but i cant get anything to work with it!!!
What else can I do? Is there someting fundamental I have missed?
I am thinking of sending the KT4 Ultra back to the shop and getting a mobo which works with the 9700! Any Ideas ?
BTW the Gcard still works ok on a MAINBOARD K7S5A

I bought it from a computer fair from a guy selling ANTECH psu's . He had no Antech left, and suggested that these were good units. Having got it home and run it i believe him. In SANDRA all voltage levels looked stable and v close to nominal.
3. MS-6590 arrived on 18th Oct 2002 , so its almost ten days old.
Both items were bought on the net.
RMAing the boards maybe my only option now if i want to stick with th eboards ive got, but do u think i would be better to swap for a different KT4 board? since i believe other models of the KT4 dont have the 9700 problem, or is this not the case?

KT4 Ultra: problem config. raid array IDE3

I owe the MSI 6590 KT4 Ultra BSR mainboard and I have difficulties configurring the RAID array in striping mode, on the IDE3 controller.
The manual describes on page 2-18 it's possible to connect up to 2 hard drives, cdrom, 120mb fd and other devices to the IDE3 controller.
Unfortunately only one of my two MAXTOR D740X-6L (6L080J4) 80gig drives is recognized by the array.
One Maxtor hard drive is jumpered as MASTER and the other is set up as SLAVE.
When I hook up the cable to an ordinary IDE port (eg IDE1) the two drives are properly recognized.
Both drives can be formatted using the regular IDE ports, this means without any cluster errors or other errors so the drives are physically OK.
Before I wrote this post I checked the support section again to make sure I am using the latest BIOS which is 1.1. I also downgraded to 1.0, but that didn't solve my problem either.
Since I work in a computer shop now and then I had the opportunity to check two Maxtor Fireball3 30gig drives on a different MS-6590 RAID board (BIOS 1.1.) and exactly the same problem occurs: the 2nd drive won't be recognized in the ARRAY on IDE3.
Please tell me what to do to make the striping option fully work on my two IDENTICAL Maxtor hard drives since MSI support came up with a standard email, which didn't cheer me up at all. Hopefully this time they will investigate this matter since no doubt more people will experience this.

Actually before installing the new KT4 Ultra I owed the KT266 Pro RAID motherboard. It's true this board has two controllers for the RAID option. Nevertheless because after reading the manual of this new board I was convinced I could connect two hard drives on the IDE3-channel. This is the reason I decided to go ahead and to upgrade to this new mainboard.
I guess I have to go back to my employer and fall back again to my KT266 (MS6380).

KT4 Ultra Bios 1.4 fixed?

There was an issue with the 1.4 bios update for the KT4 Ultra chipset and the temperature reading. I was misreading the temperature. Does anyone know if this issue has been fixed? I contacted MSI about it several times but haven't heard anything back.

Nope,still the same dated one as before.
Also when I installed v1.4 it sent Windows XP settings nuts with the HLT command enabled in bios.
So no matter if anyone says the bios is fixed,it aint yet.
There will be a different date on it anyway.

KT4 Ultra Raid Setup

Ok I want to set up a raid set for performance and am lacking an understanding of the setup.
Here is my configuration:
MSI KT4 Ultra w/Raid
GF4 4200 Ti
AMD Athlon 2100+
2x 256 333MHz Generic RAM
Intel Pro 100 Management Adapter (LAN)
2x 10 Gig Maxtor ATA100 5400 RPM HD's
1x 60 Gig Maxtor ATA100 7200 RPM HD
1 CDRW
1 52x CDROM
This is what I have tried
Put 1 10 gig drive on Primary IDE as master w/ 60 gig as slave
Both CD's on Secondary IDE
1x 10 Gig on RAID Controller (onboard)
When I go into the fast track utility and autoconfigure for performance its shows as only having one drive in the array. In the setup guide it shows that option as 2 drives in the array.
Is there something wrong with my setup?
Why does only one drive show up in the array?
I havent installed an OS yet but it will be 98.
The main drive on Primary IDE has been partitioned with Fdisk as a single active partition and nothing has been done with the second. It's my understanding it will be built when the raid is functioning, is this right?

I understand that I may only use one drive with the IDE3. My board does have 2 serial ata connectors on it as well.
If I only use the IDE3 with one hard drive will the mirror work correctly if I use the same drive (same model specs etc) on the primary ide and use my 60 gig as a secondary drive on the primary as well (i know the 60 will not work with the mirror) All i want is the performance increase for now until the serial drives drop in price and become more readily available.
So my config would be as follows:
1 12 gig drive on pri ide as master
1 60 gig on pri ide as slave
1 12 on ide3 for mirror.
If i use this will i get increased performance as far as load times etc?

KT4 Ultra SERIAL to PARALLEL ata

Dear joint users,
Just like many people I am also misled by MSI's first manual concerning the IDE3 issue. The good news is that there are converters available from SERIAL ata to PARALLEL ata. The bad news is that this converter seems to be included with a raid controller. Currently I am questioning around whether someone sells these cables separately and against what price.
In case one knows more on this issue I'd appreciate informing us via this topic. Thanks in advance!

OK the issue kt4 ultra and msi concerning the serillel converters reached a head which is not satisfactory at all in my case, but I am tired and fed up trying to communicate (via a third party) with MSI.
I even don't want to spend my energy going to MyStar in Son since it is useless though I live only 5 kms away from the industrial zone Ekkersrijt where MyStar resides in The Netherlands.
MSI stands firm not compensating the pioneers who bought the kt4 ultra thinking being able to stripe two hard disks on IDE3 because manual 1.0 clearly described this could be done.
A representative at MSI NL told the wholesale and end users MSI DO NOT manufacture/ supply a comparing product as ABIT supplies with their mainboard (serrilel converter). The story ends users should buy these converters themselves since these end users were pioneers buying the kt4 ultra.
This explanation stinks heavily, it's sad a company like MSI hides behind the golden rule in their manuals "no guarantee is given as to the correctness of its contents"
In my case I traded in the KT4 Ultra BR for the KT3 Ultra2 BR. But be sure it was the last time I bought a product which holds the MSI-star.
