KT4 Ultra Powers Off within Seconds of Power Up

Ok, here's the situation... this board powers down everytime within seconds of powering up, usually even before the video card can POST, although I have seen it POST a couple times.
I believe I've ruled out every possibility but the board...  I've got the board out of the case on it's box, and the only thing connected is the CPU, the video card, the power switch cable. and a CPU fan, which is using the power supply for power, not the board.
I have tried 2 different power supplies, 2 different video cards, 2 different processors, 2 different power cords, 2 different outlets, and using the reset button to power the board up (in case the pickup in the power switch was sticky).  I've tried 2 different RAM modules, as well as removing the RAM entirely, and clearing the CMOS... everytime, it's the same result, it powers itself off right away.
I know everything points the board being bad, but I had an ASUS board that was doing this identical thing because of the thermal protection circuitry, I could clear the CMOS to get to the BIOS, and then disable thermal protection.  It doesn't look like that's going to work here, but I thought I'd post this anyway, and see if anyone has any suggestions...

Ok... well, I feel a little dumb admitting this, but I suppose if it helps someone else down the road, it's worth it.
Problem solved... and the resolution was so simple I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't just seen it.  I cleaned off my heatsink, and the cpu core, and reapplied new thermal grease to both, then made sure the heatsink was fit as tightly as I possibly could... and voila... no more problem.
I will admit, that the heatsink I was a Swiftech unit off an old Duron CPU, and in my haste, I didn't clean it before using it again.  I never imagined that these things could overheat so quickly, but let that be a lesson to those of you like me who haven't built a machine in the last 2 years or so.  I guess the heatsink working was just something I took somewhat for granted.
Thanks to those of you who took time to try and help... hopefully my lesson will help one of you.

  • MiFi 5510L Powers Off within seconds of boot-up

The device has about 90% battery and will only turn on if I pull the battery out for about a minute then replace it, and then it will boot up and shortly after it connects to the network it powers off. I've tried the reset button on the device itself but it will not stay powered on long enough to connect to the setup site.

        MNCOONHUNTER,
I definitely understand why this concerns you. We want you to have a reliable device, I apologize for these problems. Have you tried a different battery? If you have not, please take a to store so they can test it.

  • KT4 Ultra switching off

I have a really strange problem, Recently purchased a KT4 ULTRA Board and xp2700 (333Mhz) processor, 500w silent HIPER psu, 1.5Gb 2700 Ram, Gf4mx64mb, Sony DRU500 DVD-RW, CDRW, DVD.. etc
This was for a friends multimedia system in his front room.
All was built and worked well until the multimedia started eg- DVD editing, Scanning Pictures etc.. The PC justs Switches off. The power supply needs unplugging and replugging before it will restart.
I have flashed the new 1.4 bios but to no avail.. Even in DOS it will still switch off and the only way i can get the pc to run without crashes is to set the bios from 166Mhz to 133mhz so the chip runs as a 2100..
AnyBody got any ideas on this subject?? The chip was running at under 50°C so it has not been overheated or undercooled..
    Plz need Ideas..

    Thanks for the advice..
    Already done Memtest.. OK
Temperature does not go over 45C even at full 2700.
I am going to order the Coolermaster Silent Heatpipe just because the whisper one on at the moment isnt very "Whispery "
This should eliminate any bad HSF problems..
If this does not cure problem do you think i should up the voltage to allow more to the processor?
    Bad Mobo?
    Bad Chip?
    Thanks for your time...

  • Computer turns off within seconds of turning it on

    Hi everyone.
I've had my CyberPowerPC computer since August of last year. It works amazingly, super fast, the SLi works flawlessly, the RAM, liquid cooling, 2HDDs...everything is GREAT...once it turns on of course.
Since day one, I have had this issue where I press the power button on the tower, the computer begins to turn on, all the fans, LEDs, HDDs inside come on...everything looks great. Then the whole thing powers off before it gets to POST. In total, the computer was on for like 4 seconds. I have been able to get passed this by just pressing the power button again right when the computer would turn itself back off and holding it for a second then everything boots up perfect.
I've looked everywhere for solutions to this ranging from metal contact between the motherboard and the tower, faulty powersupply, etc. I think(!!) it's because of the Over Voltage Protection that is a feature of my power supply (Toughpower W0155RU 1000w) turning the computer off because it is detecting either too much power or not enough power...the power supply is obviously strong enough because it can handle the system when I trick it into turning on and it never overheats or powers itself off once its fully up and running...also heat is not the issue because this happens right from the start, even after my computer has been off for days. Already tried removing all the RAM sticks (4 x2GB *got expected error), and then 1 stick at a time...still didn't work. The voltage coming from the outlet isn't to blame because this happens no matter what location I plug my computer into (outlets at home, school, friend's houses, etc.). ALSO, when I shut down my computer, I'm not able to turn it back on for at least 10 minutes, it will just sit there completely dead with only the LEDs on the motherboard lit up no matter how many times I press the power button...
I bought it just before school because I needed it for school, so I never was really able to troubleshoot this issue by taking the tower apart and checking all the connections and such, so now I will be able to do it since I've graduated (from college) and don't rely on my computer so heavily.
any suggestions on what it might be before I go crazy on this thing and waste time on things it couldn't be? I hope it's not the motherboard, so I don't have to send it back in to CyberPower for repairs and not be able to use it for some time.
    the rig:
    cpu - core 2 quad q9550
    psu - 1000w toughpower thernaltake
    gpu - 2x GTX260
    ram - 8GB ddr2 800
    cool - acetek liquid cooling
    hdd - 1x 10k rpm 74GB, 1x 7200rpm 300GB
    mobo - nforce 780i SLi
    thanks guys.

There should be a way to open up the faceplate of your computer, and then with a eraser on a pencil , press the power button with the tower plugged in and see what happens.

  • Macbook Pro powers off when on battery power

Help! My MBP 17" now powers off after a couple of minutes on battery power. When this happens, trying to boot again, the system will power off again while loading the OS. The only way to get the MBP to boot then is to plug in the AC adaptor.
I've reset the SMC and reconditioned the battery. Both the OS and the battery think the battery is fully charged. This didn't happen before upgrading to Leopard.

I believe the color of the magsafe was green and that it wasn't charging. (The MBP thought the battery was at 96%.)
Here's the profile after I got to work and plugged in my magsafe (which is a second magsafe I keep at work), the color is amber:

My iPhone 4s has just powered down without any previous indication of problems and will not power back up? Any suggestions?

  • Dv6910us shuts off within seconds-minutes

Hello. I have owned my Pavilion dv6910us for a year and a half. This evening, I sprayed some compressed air into the vents to dislodge some dust from the fans. I did this before about a year ago when my fans began to run loudly. Please note that the computer was turned off and unplugged when I did this
When I started the computer again, it booted up and I got to open my Firefox browser before the computer shut off without warning. Now I can't get the computer up to the vista startup screen. It usually gets to the screen where it tells me that my computer was not properly shut down before turning off.
I noticed that the fan that usually starts when I boot up no longer turns on. I can hear the hard drive booting up, however. The computer remains cool and everything. I'm pretty sure I did something when I sprayed the compressed air into the vents. What can I do to remedy this?
I will also mention. that I installed some vista updates right before I shut the computer down to spray it. I'm not sure if this is an issue. I was also having problems with the computer intermittently going from AC to battery power even though the computer remained plugged in.
    I'll appreciate any help. Thanks.

UPDATE: The computer stays on now, but the fan isn't working at all. I used HWMonitor and the temperatues were around 80 degrees celsius. I'm sure that's not a good temperature.

  • Airport Express (2009 model) powers off within 30 secs

I have used my airport express for a couple of months. I went to use it a few days ago, plugged it into the mains socket and reset it. Since then, when I turn on the power, the initial green light comes on followed by less than 25 secs of the amber flashing light - then no light at all.
Is my AE faulty or is there anything else I need to do.

    Welcome to the discussions!
You didn't indicate whether you had tried a Factory Default Reset in your post, so if you haven't already done so, try the reset as follows:
Pull the AirPort Express (AX) from power
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug the AX back in to power
Release the reset button in 8-10 seconds
You will need to reconfigure your device again after the default reset. If you try this reset a few times and the device still does not respond correctly, it is very likely that the AX is defective and will need to be replaced.

  • Laptop turns on and then off within seconds

Here is my problem.. My laptop, which is only 1 yr 3 mos old, will not cut on. I shut the lid and when I went to open it agian, it would not resume.. So I had to manual shut it down.. When I attempted to cut it on again, it will not come on.. The light will flash on and back off.

It is possible that it could be a bad RAM stick.
Try this: Take out one of your RAM  sticks, reboot your computer.  If it starts properly, then the RAM that was taken out was the culprit.  If when you reboot you have the same problem, switch RAM sticks and try the same thing with the other RAM stick and see if that works.
If the problem is your RAM, this will tell you which one is bad.
Let us know how it goes.

  • P775-S7232 optical drive powered off and cannot power on

I've found the answer (at least for me) to the optical drive powering off and refusing to power on again in my Satellite P775-S7232. When it happened, my internal optical drive would only be recognized intermittently, even in the BIOS. I finally tried installing a new hard drive and all of a sudden, the optical drive was working again.
I then installed a clean copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 from a boot DVD, installed all the NECESSARY hardware drivers from a TOSAPINS Folder DVD disc I had burned earlier and AVOIDED installing any and all TOSHIBA-branded software and demo software from that folder, especially anything that had to do with "power management" or "ecology (ECO)". The only exceptions being the Toshiba Web Camera Application and the TOSHIBA HDD Protection (solves the Unknown Device ACPI/TOS620A error in Windows 7 Device Manager).
I don't think anything was wrong with the original HDD, in fact I'm reformatting the drive right now on a different system and it appears to be just fine. But something went wrong in the original Toshiba software to turn off that optical drive and not turn it back on again. So far, with a virgin installation of Win7 x64 from a different source and being VERY selective on what I reinstalled, everything has been working great and I'm much happier without all the crapware and "helpful" Toshiba applications.

I found that my optical drive would power off & couldn't power it on (like many of you)  when it arrived md Nov.
Did a bunch of research & tried a lot of things and it finally stayed on.
A few days ago it was powered off again. Finally noticed that the day before I got an auto download of Lenovo's power manager.
I 'uninstalled' it & the drive stays on.
Needless to say I turned off auto updates.

  • Can I set an alarm when external drive powers off?

I must be one of the few people who have no trouble at all with TM! I use it to back up about 1TB of photos (I am a semi-pro photographer) to two different drives - keeping one offsite at the office and rotating them regularly.
However - my external drive is hidden at home when connected. When we have a power outage (all too often here in MA) then the drive powers off and does not power on again (I am using MacAlly enclosures - have tried several, these are the most reliable to date).
Given that TM works so well, I never think to check if it has backed up so if the power has cycled I don't notice that TM has not run. Is there any way to set an alert (dialog box popup, auto email etc) to tell me when TM cannot access the drive as it is powered off. Is this buried in Leopard, or does anyone know of a 3rd party app?
    Thanks

I could not agree more with Kappy.
I would never plug either my Mac or my external into anything but a UPS. They've gotten much less expensive lately, and even a fairly small one ($100 to $130 or so) will run my Mac and external for an hour or so.
But you don't necessarily need even that much; just enough for your Mac to power itself down in an orderly manner.
If you have a power failure to either your Mac or external disk, it can corrupt your data. I'd recommend using Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to do a +Repair Disk+ (not permissions) on your external, and a +Verify Disk+ (not permissions) on your internal. If the internal shows errors, you'll have to use the copy of DU on your Leopard Install disc to fix them. Post back if you need to do this but don't know how.
