Kt4 ultra problem

hello! i am having a problem with my kt4 ultra.
it originally booted, but once i hit delete to go into setup everything crashed. now when i boot, i get 2 beeps followed by another 8 beeps.
i've done alot of browsing through these forums and other sites, and heres what i find over and over:
10 Short
 CMOS register
Check the motherboard and remove all expansion cards and replace one at a time.
i've done this and there is still a problem. am i doing the wrong diagnostics for the 2-8 beep combo?

i cleared cmos by removing battery and via the jumper method. no go.
the cpu/mobo/ram/video/ethernet were in another computer and worked previously. i sold them to my friend and had him buy a new case - i got everything setup the first time, booted, hit del to go into bios to make sure all settings were correct. it crashed and now does the 2-8 combo beep.
previously the mobo was in another case and we used different ram, but i still get the 2-8 beep combo using that same ram.
spec are:
350w ps
kt4 ultra mobo
athlon xp 2200+
geforce 4 ti4600
1 gig ddr 300 ram
30 gig western digital 5400 rpm hd
philips cdrom
netgear ethernet card
+3.3 = 28A
+5 = 35A
+12 = 17A

  • KT4 Ultra: problem config. raid array IDE3

I owe the MSI 6590 KT4 Ultra BSR mainboard and I have difficulties configurring the RAID array in striping mode, on the IDE3 controller.
The manual describes on page 2-18 it's possible to connect up to 2 hard drives, cdrom, 120mb fd and other devices to the IDE3 controller.
Unfortunately only one of my two MAXTOR D740X-6L (6L080J4) 80gig drives is recognized by the array.
One Maxtor hard drive is jumpered as MASTER and the other is set up as SLAVE.
When I hook up the cable to an ordinary IDE port (eg IDE1) the two drives are properly recognized.
Both drives can be formatted using the regular IDE ports, this means without any cluster errors or other errors so the drives are physically OK.
Before I wrote this post I checked the support section again to make sure I am using the latest BIOS which is 1.1. I also downgraded to 1.0, but that didn't solve my problem either.
Since I work in a computer shop now and then I had the opportunity to check two Maxtor Fireball3 30gig drives on a different MS-6590 RAID board (BIOS 1.1.) and exactly the same problem occurs: the 2nd drive won't be recognized in the ARRAY on IDE3.
Please tell me what to do to make the striping option fully work on my two IDENTICAL Maxtor hard drives since MSI support came up with a standard email, which didn't cheer me up at all. Hopefully this time they will investigate this matter since no doubt more people will experience this.

Thanks for the quick response, though it's not satisfactory for me (of course).
Actually before installing the new KT4 Ultra I owed the KT266 Pro RAID motherboard. It's true this board has two controllers for the RAID option. Nevertheless because after reading the manual of this new board I was convinced I could connect two hard drives on the IDE3-channel. This is the reason I decided to go ahead and to upgrade to this new mainboard.
I guess I have to go back to my employer and fall back again to my KT266 (MS6380).

  • KT4 Ultra Problem - Melting and stuff...not good...

Hi folks, I just got an MSI Kt4 Ultra motherboard and plugged all my stuff in and turned it on and this little black component of the board (0.5cm squared roughly) basically melted and was kinda catching fire...
So, I turned it off quickly and took out my netword card, modem (PCI card), the bluetooth option that comes with the board and the S-Bracket thingy that comes with it and then turned it back on and there wasn't any problems.
OK, now, the little black thing that was burning was, from the picture below, the one next to the southbridge black square...to the right of it, just left of those two white circles.
Any ideas? Should I be worried? What could have caused this? Could it have been one of the four components I removed? Do you expect further problems...ie - my computer catching fire?
    Any help would be appreaciated.
    Thanks,
    Greg

I had this exact same problem with my ECS K7S5A board.. my problem was that the voltage for the PSU wasn't set for U.S., it was running the higher voltage, which caused that same small black chip to literally smoke and fry inside my case... left a great smell in there for awhile too. Hope this helps in some way.

  • MSI GeForce3 Ti200 + MSI KT4 Ultra [problems]

hi, every time i am on my computer my computer restarts and random intervals and when it returns to windows from a reboot it telss me it had a display device driver failure.........i never used to have this problem b4 and only seem to get it now since i installed my new motherboard (MSI KT4 Ultra). I did a fresh windows install and am running the latest VIA drivers, i tried all the nVidia drivers out there old/new......same problem....... any help would be great, cause it's getting real annoying now.
This is the error i get:
    Quote
The driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation. Please check with the device manufacturer for a driver update.

well after removing the display driver and now running the standard vga driver, i am positive the thing at fault here is the driver.....because i my compter does not spontainiously reboot nor do i get any display errors, hoever my computer activity is very limited, i can not run any games or use any graphic intensive apps.
.......since the driver IS at fault, will MSI please release a fix or a new driver that will resolve this issue
    Thnx.

  • KT4 Ultra Problems...

After 10 months of running flawlessly, I power up to a Black Screen boot. After clearing the CMOS many times, I finally realize I can boot at 100 fsb, instead of my 10 month 166 fsb.
-Yes, the heatsink fan is seated properly.
-No, I have not done any changes to cause this.
-When I get the Black Screen Boot, D-Bracket hangs on "Early Chipset Initialization"
    System Specs
    Motherboard: MSI KT4AV
    CPU: Athlon 2700+
RAM: Corsair XMS 512 Stick pc3200
    Normal FSB: 166
Current FSB: 100 (Anything past results in a black screen boot)
    Graphics: Radeon 9700 Pro
    Power Supply: Antec 480 Watt
    +5V = 38A
    +12V = 22A
    +3.3V = 30A
    -5V = 0.5A
    -12V = 1.0A
    5V sb = 2.0A
This is causing me to currently run as a 1500+ insted of my 2700+, which is not good on the gaming. This happened around a month ago, and I have tried many things, and none seem to work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    -Brandon

    Update Part A: Wont boot
Update Part B: Started booting after about 15 CMOS clears
Update Part C: Added a new stick of RAM, exact same kind as before. First thing on POST is "CMOS/GPNV Checksum Bad Press F1 to run CMOS setup"
I seem tonot be able to boot for a ay or two everytime I try to get my normal fsb back, so, could this new stick of RAM help once I am in? I dont want any more downtime. Perhaps flashing the bios fomr the 100 fsb system, then trying the normal fsb with the new RAM. Any thoughts?
    Oh yeah, and Merry Christmas!

Why is windows only says 2.09Ghz??
AND, I think my system is very slow. I used to have AMD 1200Mhz. And this sytem is almost like my last computer.

  • Problem with KT4 Ultra and XP 2700

First excuse my bad english (i'm from Germany)!!
I have a heavy problem with my KT4 Ultra.
    First my system:
    AMD Athlon XP 2700
Mainboard: MSI KT4 Ultra (MS-6590) Bios vers. 1.1
    MSI Geforce 4 Ti 4200 64 Mb
    512 Mb DDR Ram Apacer Technology 512 MB 16x(32mx8)DDR-SDRAM PC2700U-2533-700(CL2.5 upto 167MHz)(CL2 upto 133MHz
    Sound : Onboard
    GlobalWIN CAK38 II Kupfer
    Powersupply: Levicom 420W
    Win XP SP1
    Now the problen:
When i turn the FSB in the Bios up to 166MHz
the system crashes on Windows startupscreen!!
I've turned the FSP clock down to 164 MHz and Windows starts. But when i runned 3DMark2001 it crashes back to desktop !!
Then i turned the FSB clock down to 159 MHz and the system runns stabile!!
    Now what i've already tried:
Turned down Ram timings and frequency (same prob.)
    No heatproblem (CPU at 118.f)
Had the same system exapt an XP1800 instead an XP2700 and no problems!!
Called the MSI hotline (Germany) and they told me to type the FSB manually in the Bios (insted of numblock +and -).  ?(
Still the same problem !!  ;(
Has anyone the same problem as i ???
    THX !!

    Hi,
    I would try other ram....
Or start from BIOS default settings and only change CPU-FSB....
    See what happens...

  • Kt4 ultra bios 1.3 ati problem

I updated my bios a while ago and when i did i noticed pixels in weird places.  I updated from 1.2 i was having problems with crc errors, after that i couldnt run any driver verision on my ati 8500le above 2.5  so i couldnt run 3.0a 3.1. i was just checking if anyone else had these problems when updating to 1.3 on there kt4 ultra. and i flahed twice the first time i thought it was a bad flash or something. i was running 3.0 and downgraded. i am hoping msi will fix this issue but who knows. overclocked or under clocked i still have the problem.
    i am running 2.13GHz overclocked from 1.73
    kt4ultra
    768 ddr400 running at 333MHz
    ati 8500le

I've done that, but the problem still exist.
I think it's more like a BIOS problem since there's no problem when I'm runnign 1.1 instead of 1.3

  • KT4 Ultra - SCSI boot problem

    Hi,
I have installed a Tekram DC390U2W LVD SCSI adapter on my KT4 Ultra. My problem is that I cannot select any of the five connected SCSI disks as a boot device in the BIOS (BBS-n), nor can I select 'Legacy SCSI' as a boot device, they simply don't exist as options in the Boot Sequence menu. I've used this card (and were able to boot) without problem using a MSI KT266 motherboard, so I don't think the problem is the SCSI adapter. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I've disabled all motherboard options (Serial ATA Raid/1394/USB 2.0/GBLAN/Audio controllers), remove all PCI cards exept the Tekram card and tried it in all PCI slots without success. Also tried to assign different IRQs to the SCSI card in the BIOS. Tekram support responded that the SCSI card is fully PnP/BBS/PCI 2.1 specification compliant and they're unaware of any KT400 issues. There are issues (and work arounds) with this SCSI card when using it on motherboards with an on-board SCSI controller and older Award BIOS versions, but that's not applicable here.
Anyone out there using this SCSI card and motherboard got this combination to work as intended?

  • KT4 Ultra-BSR - Drive problems?

    Yesterday I purchased a KT4 Ultra-BSR. I am doing a clean install.
    I have an Athlon XP200+, 2 x 512MB DDR Ram (PC2100).
    On IDE1 I have put 2 x 20GB Western Digital HDs.
On IDE2 I have put a Pioneer DVR-A04 as Master, and a  100GB Western Digital HD as the Slave.
On IDE3 I want a 30GB Western Digital HD as Master, and a 40x Liteon CD-R/W as Slave.
I have installed Windows XP Pro (SP1) from new, and I have installed all of the drivers and utilities from the Drivers CD. My motherboard was shipped with BIOS Version 1.1
When I boot into Windows, I do NOT see the CD-R/W at all.
Also, the only way ro see the HD that's on IDE3 is when it's configured as an array (even though there's only one HD).
I would have preferred to have two HD's on IDE3 but NOT with any form of RAID configuration - is there a way of doing this?
    Many thanks

I did it the simple way: Used Fujitsu-Siemens' Plugfree setup instead of the incredibly buggy MSI drivers. Then it worked perfectly with my PocketLoox and Ericsson T39. The hardware is the same. But still the range stinks (max 20 feet on my system), so I bought a full WLan setup instead.
Here's the URL (I belive it says it's only for Fujitsu-Siemens' computers, but that's just standard manufacturer's bull.  8)

You've misunderstood my problem.  I have the MSI KT4 Ultra-BSR motherboard which has a bluetooth module which needs to be connected to the motherboard, however, I don't know how to connect it (PHYSICALLY).
Therefore I need someone with the same board to tell me how they did it.

  • Serious problems with KT4 Ultra

    Hi,
I am having very serious issues with my KT4 Ultra board.  Before I go any further here are the specs:
KT4 Ultra w/ AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (not overclocked)
    512 MB PC3200 RAM
    BIOS V. 1.4
    40 Gig HDD ATA 100
    ATi Radeon 64 DDR Vivo
    PC Alert 4 Temps:
    System: 38*C
    CPU: 41*C
Apparently everything is within normal specs.  However, when I go to play a game like Half-Life my computer often spontaneously reboots itself.  I have tried changing/upgrading drivers for almost everything.
Another problem is my onboard sound.  It as of late now plays everything in a distorted way.  Drivers that I have tried to download for it come up with the message "VIA AC`97 NOT FOUND" Essentially the drivers from VIA dont even think my sound is there (oh but it is.)  I had to settle with windows update for this as nothing I can find on this website works.  Last but not least, sometimes when I am browsing the web or doing almost nothing, maybe chatting on IM or something, my comp freezes solid.  Nothing will work except the reset button.  These problems have just lately come about and they are very frustrating.  Any reply would be greatly appreciated.

Read my page on lock-ups and reboots as this can be many things.

  • Problems with FuzzyLogic 4 and KT4 Ultra

I am having problems with the overclocking using the FuzzyLogic 4 and my KT4 Ultra board. It is a new board with a new Athlon 2200 XP processor and 1GB crucial memory. If I use FL4 to overclock using the auto session, it puts the turbo to 1.93GHz after the reboot. After about an hour the system will lock up completely. If used the manual settings of FL4 to lower the increments by 2 all the way back down to the original speed. None of the overclock settings will work for more that a couple of hours! I mean I can't even get this 1.8GHz cpu to overclock to 1.833GHz for more than a couple of hours without crashing. Should I be overclocking in the bios instead of using this program? The memory is 266 DDR.

Hi, i have a kt4-ultra sr and i have same problems to overclocking stable cpu xp 1800+ (1533 mhz)------to (1566 mhz), i try overcloking again on 1566 mhz- 1600 mhz my system freeze with run games.lamentably kt4 was not what I hoped. :O.
i buy it model (with a ventilator in chipset )for not to have problems of overclocking, but  paid  expensive and in fact not works of correct way  for anything .I am unconformed with kt4 .I see that you have same problems.
    greetings

  • KT4 ULTRA / Promise Fasttrack TX2 100 RAID problems

I have my decided to retire my old MAXTOR and get 2 WD800JB for my new Promise Fasttrack TX2 100 RAID card. I set the RAID and stuff up everything is working fine but first I realized that my RAID benchmarks are low. I tried different stripe sizes(16/16 - 64/64), drivers and even tried both drives independent on different chanels RAID card.
I was still using old installed OS from my old HDD and I decided to install new OS on RAID 0 array and see how fast it boots up. I installed windows properly no problems but when I restart the system without WinXP CD in the CD drive RAID card did not boot up, I was getting an error message saying "error booting from the previous device" but when I put WinXP CD back in after cd boot screen it boots from RAID drives.
    My RAID System;
    KT4 ULTRA SR
    Promise Fasttrack TX2 100
    2 x WD800JB
here is my question; do you guys know any issues between KT4 ULTRA and Promise TX2 card. If no I'll get another card and see if there is sth wrong with this one.
btw my system is working fine!!!!

1 got the wd drives either jumperless........stand alone master or cable select
on the black end of the ide
2 have you set scsi second to cdrom in bios boot order
3 never have any other hard drives connected in the box when installing raid either

  • KT4-Ultra-BSR Video problem

My PC was running fine. I have the KT4 Ultra BSR with XP2200+. I WAS running a TNT2/Riva 32MB GFX Card, and all was OK. I then bought a new graphics card - a 64MB Triplex Xabre-Pro (AGP 8X). I installed the card, but with it installed, the PC would not even attempt boot.
I took the card out and put my old TNT back in, and the PC worked OK.
I tried the jumper settings on the Triplex card, but it still failed to boot.
NOW the PC won't boot - even with the TNT card in, BUT it will boot WITHOUT a gfx card (although it gives the customary beeps).
What am I doing wrong here?

OK, well it IS a 3.3V and 5V PSU.
I have tried booting withou the NIC installed, and it made no odds.
    I have cleared the CMOS
I didn't remove the TNT drivers, but I don't feel like that's the problem since the machine does not power up.
I have tried a combined 300W 3.3V / 5V PSU that was in the machine before the gold PSU and it doesn't power on with that one in either.
On BOTH PSU's the machine WILL boot without either of my 2 graphics cards in it, but will not boot with either of them (whereas it did at least boot with the TNT before)

  • KT4 Ultra RAM problems and others

    Hi,
    just bought KT4 Ultra, with 512MB DDR-RAM 266/2100 CL 2,5 and Athlon XP 2100+, BIOS V1.2.
During boot-up the computer tells me, that I've got 1024 MB RAM although I only have 512MB. Linux says the same and RAM Test Software does too !! I can't install RedHat nor Windows XP, they always crash, prbably due to RAM problem.
I've already tried out all 3 memory slots.
Any suggestion what to do ?
Why does the computer not recognize any device on the 3rd IDE port ( neither IBM Deskstar w/ 40GB, LS 120 Drive, CD-ROM Drive). My BIOS doesn't show ANY options for the 3rd IDE port!
    TIA

Is that in the BIOS under: Serial Ata - enabled ? ( I did that !)
    Try http://www.memtest86.com
    Already did, it always crashes.
    Have you tried another RAM?
'Have no other RAM available right now.
And I can't start my computer anymore, since the cpu fan wont work. I plugged the cpu fan into the manboard-fan plug but then the mainboard won't be cooled. That can't work all too long, can it ?
