KT4 Ultra RAm settings?

Hi,
I recently upgraded my system to a KT4 ultra, athlon 2200+XP, 512MB Crucial 2100 DDRAM and an MSI GF4 Ti4600.
Now its running ok, but I think its running a tad under par. Its benching about 10900 on 3DMark 2001. Which aint the best.
I was wondering about changing the RAM settings in BIOS. Would they have much of effect?
Also what about flashing the BIOS, with version 1.1? I'm very wary about doing that because the last couple of times I flashed a bios it screwed the motherboard up royally. Is it worth the risk?
Ta

Hi,
You may try "Load High Performance Default" in the BIOS. If it works, good, you should get few extra marks by some margin. If it caused instability to the system, don't force it, revert to BIOS Setup Default.
The effect of those RAM settings can only be seen by benchmarks. Normal usage, you can hardly feel any difference.
For BIOS, "if it aint broke, don't fix it". Most BIOS updates do not meant to improve performance, but for bug fix and to support new hardware. Read the BIOS update info you'll know what has been fixed/updated.

  • KT4 Ultra RAM problems and others

    Hi,
    just bought KT4 Ultra, with 512MB DDR-RAM 266/2100 CL 2,5 and Athlon XP 2100+, BIOS V1.2.
During boot-up the computer tells me, that I've got 1024 MB RAM although I only have 512MB. Linux says the same and RAM Test Software does too !! I can't install RedHat nor Windows XP, they always crash, prbably due to RAM problem.
I've already tried out all 3 memory slots.
Any suggestion what to do ?
Why does the computer not recognize any device on the 3rd IDE port ( neither IBM Deskstar w/ 40GB, LS 120 Drive, CD-ROM Drive). My BIOS doesn't show ANY options for the 3rd IDE port!
    TIA

Is that in the BIOS under: Serial Ata - enabled ? ( I did that !)
    Try http://www.memtest86.com
    Already did, it always crashes.
    Have you tried another RAM?
'Have no other RAM available right now.
And I can't start my computer anymore, since the cpu fan wont work. I plugged the cpu fan into the manboard-fan plug but then the mainboard won't be cooled. That can't work all too long, can it ?

  • MSI Fast - Turbo - Ultra RAM settings on KT6V

    hi, I have a KT6V mobo with 1 bank Twinmos 512MB ram.
I am trying to have the best RAM performance changing bios setting.
    I have a strange result:
Ultra mode + cas 2,5 give me best results than Turbo mode + cas 2. ( Ultra mode + cas 2 crash )
What MSI Ultra mode does to give bigger results of cas 2 ? Does it increment the RAM BUS ?
What are the best suggestions ?
    Thanks

Update Description Removed the "MEMORY TIMING" setting from the BIOS. System will have no display when user change the "MEMORY TIMING" option in the BIOS, from NORMAL to FAST or ULTRA. The selection in the BIOS is for over-clocking only. But some memories can't be over-clocked and caused the compatibility issue.
** We strongly recommend all end users to update the BIOS to the version 1.3. **
That was taken from the BIOS page for the KT6V, so apparently those settings were causing problems for many users.

  • KT4 Ultra won't boot if I change settings in BIOS

I can't change any cmos settings either. If I change anything in the bios at all it won't boot. it will turn on but won't boot. so I have to clear the cmos to get into windows and my 2500+ Barton is running at 1050mhz because I can't set the fsb to 166(333) like I should be able to. And I just bought the chip yesterday.

Well, its not yet conclusive that your BIOS is bad, all we are saying at this stage is that with a new CPU, you can change settings but it will not Boot. Correct?
When you update a BIOS you only do not always change all the data stored in the memory.
I have, before now, resorted to to using the emergency recovery feature of the BIOS that is well documented.
This way, subject to the memory not having any bad addresses, you completely re-program the BIOS I.C.
Have you tried  BIGRHINO suggestion first?

  • RAM for KT4 Ultra

Hi there, just wondered if one stick of Twinmos 3200 512mb will work on this board? also will i have to ajust the FSB for my Xp 2400+? which is currently set at 133, thanks

Msi doesnt list that memory on there web site, but, that does not mean it will not work,i have corsair cms 3200 platn,it was not listed,i was able to use it at 400 fsb by setting the memory voltage up a little higher, but now i just keep it at 333,i seem to get the best results there or at least untill i can get a 2800 with a 333 fsb...but frankly all benchmarks ive done and seen says to run your memory the same front bus as your memory so it runs synchronosly with the proc insted of asynchronosl.by the way,the kt4 ultra bioswill alow you to set your memory bus at 400,333,266 and your proc at 166or 133.you can set them individualy.so that the memory can run at 400 fsb and the proc can run at 133 or 166 according to which proc you have see ya!! )

Why is windows only says 2.09Ghz??
AND, I think my system is very slow. I used to have AMD 1200Mhz. And this sytem is almost like my last computer.

  • Problem with KT4 Ultra and XP 2700

First excuse my bad english (i'm from Germany)!!
I have a heavy problem with my KT4 Ultra.
    First my system:
    AMD Athlon XP 2700
Mainboard: MSI KT4 Ultra (MS-6590) Bios vers. 1.1
    MSI Geforce 4 Ti 4200 64 Mb
    512 Mb DDR Ram Apacer Technology 512 MB 16x(32mx8)DDR-SDRAM PC2700U-2533-700(CL2.5 upto 167MHz)(CL2 upto 133MHz
    Sound : Onboard
    GlobalWIN CAK38 II Kupfer
    Powersupply: Levicom 420W
    Win XP SP1
    Now the problen:
When i turn the FSB in the Bios up to 166MHz
the system crashes on Windows startupscreen!!
I've turned the FSP clock down to 164 MHz and Windows starts. But when i runned 3DMark2001 it crashes back to desktop !!
Then i turned the FSB clock down to 159 MHz and the system runns stabile!!
    Now what i've already tried:
Turned down Ram timings and frequency (same prob.)
    No heatproblem (CPU at 118.f)
Had the same system exapt an XP1800 instead an XP2700 and no problems!!
Called the MSI hotline (Germany) and they told me to type the FSB manually in the Bios (insted of numblock +and -).  ?(
Still the same problem !!  ;(
Has anyone the same problem as i ???
    THX !!

  • KT4 Ultra MS-6590 - Win XP Home boots with 2GB DDR333 installed but not 3GB

    Spec...
    KT4 Ultra MS-6590
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ (FSB set to 166MHz in BIOS)
    BIOS MS-6590v1.4
    Win XP Home 2002, SP3
    Problem...
Previously, had 768MB RAM installed, and XP strangely identified CPU as a 2200+.
Recently upgraded the RAM to 3GB DDR333 (3 sticks of 1GB 184-pin unbuff DIMM 128MX64 DDR PC2700), and changed BIOS settings for CPU and DRAM.
In the DOS boot screen, Win XP progress indicator fills completely from left to right, then stops with a half-blinking cursor in the top left of the screen.
Removed 1GB stick and Win XP successfully loaded, also now recognising the Athlon XP 3000+, and running a heck of a lot faster.
Tried adding the /3GB switch to the boot.ini file, which didn't do anything, and after reading more forum advice, guessed this might be irrelevant. I don't think this is a 4GT and PAE issue, as I'm not trying to install above 4GB (if I've correctly understood).
Also, forum advice (various sites) conflicts on whether Win XP 32-bit is limited to 2GB or 4GB, and I can't find any workarounds for my current setup.
    Any ideas?

Another test I've done is to enable boot logging with Win XP. This appends command lines to the file 'ntbtlog' in the windows directory, which mainly shows drivers being loaded as Win XP is launched. The log is normally date and time-stamped for every boot-logging session.
When all 3 sticks are installed, I cold boot, then press F8 and select 'enable boot logging' from the options menu. This is what appears on the screen as the system, attempts to load Win XP.
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\KDCOM.DLL
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\BOOTVID.dll
    Loaded driver ACPI.sys
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\WMILIB.SYS
    Loaded driver pci.sys
    Loaded driver isapnp.sys
    Loaded driver viaide.sys
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\PCIIDEX.SYS
    Loaded driver MountMgr.sys
    Loaded driver ftdisk.sys
    Loaded driver PartMgr.sys
    Loaded driver VolSnap.sys
    Loaded driver atapi.sys
    Loaded driver disk.sys
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS
    Loaded driver fltmgr.sys
    Loaded driver sr.sys
    Loaded driver PxHelp20.sys
    Loaded driver KSecDD.sys
    Loaded driver Ntfs.sys
    Loaded driver NDIS.sys
    Loaded driver Mup.sys
    Loaded driver BTHidMgr.sys
Then the process freezes and a solid white block appears in the top-left of the screen, with the top-right corner of the block blinking.
At this point, I turn off the PC using the main power switch, then remove the 3rd memory stick. After booting up again, with only 2 sticks installed, opening the text file 'ntbtlog' reveals that this boot event wasn't logged.
So, I reboot Win XP with only the 2 sticks installed, and select 'enable boot logging'. This time, the above list of loaded drivers is shown in the text file, plus a whole lot more. The potentially interesting observation is the next in the list after "Loaded driver BTHidMgr.sys" which is "Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\amdk7.sys".
'amdk7.sys' is a driver file which seems to come with one of the Win XP Service Packs, and which "is necessary to enable Windows XP support for AMD PowerNow! technology on computers that use a mobile Athlon 4 or mobile Duron processor." http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306458
Various other posts refer to it in relation to AMD Athlon XP 3000+ Mobile, whereas mine is a 3000+ in a desktop. Also, if 'amdk7.sys' isn't available, then Win XP will load the generic driver 'processr.sys'. In fact, my 'ntbtlog' includes the entry "Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\processr.sys" which would make sense.
However, my curiosity is that with the 3 sticks installed, Win XP fails to continue loading when reaching 'amdk7.sys' in the driver list.
Another test I did was to change the power management settings in the BIOS.
"IPCA Function: This item is to activate the ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power
Management Interface) function. If your operating system is ACPI-aware, such
as Windows 98SE/2000/ME, select Yes. Available options: Yes, No."
This was normally set to Yes. When I set it to No and rebooted with 3 sticks installed, instead of a half-blinking white block (as described above), the screen went black and then the system rebooted itself...
    The plot thickens!...
Maybe there's a clear explanation for this - however, I'm wary of doing something to the 'amdk7.sys' driver file (whether removing or disabling it somehow) in case it prevents Win XP from launching with just my 2 sticks installed. I'd guess there are precautions, but need further info on whether this is relevant, and what the implications might be.

  • Kt4 ultra problem

hello! i am having a problem with my kt4 ultra.
it originally booted, but once i hit delete to go into setup everything crashed. now when i boot, i get 2 beeps followed by another 8 beeps.
i've done alot of browsing through these forums and other sites, and heres what i find over and over:
    10 Short
     CMOS register
Check the motherboard and remove all expansion cards and replace one at a time.
i've done this and there is still a problem. am i doing the wrong diagnostics for the 2-8 beep combo?

i cleared cmos by removing battery and via the jumper method. no go.
the cpu/mobo/ram/video/ethernet were in another computer and worked previously. i sold them to my friend and had him buy a new case - i got everything setup the first time, booted, hit del to go into bios to make sure all settings were correct. it crashed and now does the 2-8 combo beep.
previously the mobo was in another case and we used different ram, but i still get the 2-8 beep combo using that same ram.
    spec are:

I can help a little  1000MHZ AMD chip=200FSB XP CPUs=266FSB this is CPU speed . AMD 1000MHZ CPU needs to run @100FSB where a XP CPU can run @133FSB This is MEMORY speed . Trying to crank that poor old chip up to anything other than 100 will do you NO good. You need to buy a bigger cpu of the XP kind. A lot of the older XPs can be had for a low price. 50c isn't not super hot. My KT4 runs in the 40s. You might want to think about a bigger cpu cooler to bring the temps down a bit. Most of your settings should be left at system default, since you only have a 1000MHZ CPU. When you go up to an XP then you can make a few changes. Regards BIGDADDY51 :D  :D

  • KT4 Ultra & AMD 2100XP+

I bought a new MSI motherboard and a 2100XP Athlon CPU. on saturday - put it all together and boot the machine and it worked - at 1500XP! Had a look on the chip and it says 2100 - so it's the right chip. Emailed the people I bought it from and they said to set it up in the BIOS. So I looked at the webbie and set up the FSB and the ratio as per the webpage, but whenever I set the ratio above 9.0 it hangs before boot so I have to clear the CMOS (using jumper), also no matter what settings I set for the FSB and the ratio I ALWAYS get it set at 1500. Please help - it is driving me nuts. I have a 55W PSU - the CPU idles at 35C. Using DDR RAM. If any other info is required just let me know.

what FSB are you setting ? also you should leave the ratio to auto ! also 55W PSU doesnt mean much look at some other post and see the kind of information people are asked for

  • KT4 Ultra / Incorrect CPU report

Hey chaps, I have had a look around the MSI site and forum, but cant seem to see any suggestions of a resolution for this:
    KT4 Ultra (BIOS A6590VMS.140)
    512 DDR Ram
Was running very happily and reporting correct CPU speed for an XP1800+
Swapped CPU for a thoroughbred XP2600+, flashed BIOS to latest, set the BIOS settings to as directed in the CPU support table (FSB 133, ratio="auto"), and the CPU is reported as XP2000+
Any ideas chaps or are we looking at faulty CPU?

Hi. This is to let you and others know that I couldn't achieve even a 1 fsb overclock with my KT4 ULTRA-SR The system runs excellent at stock settings, but any attempt to OC was met with a no go. I am awaiting a new bios ,as my board has the original 1.o bios on it. I saw no reason to flash ,as others with the KT4 had no success with 1.1 and bigger P/S and bigger ram. I had to download the latest issue of FUZZY4 to even get it to display.on the desktop.I guess we will see if the new bios will address any issues on the KT4 boards. BIGDADDY51 :D  :D  ;(
