KT4 Ultra SATA RAID Setup

I'm having trouble getting the system to recognize my drives on the SATA RAID controllers. I am *not* using IDE 3, I'm using the two serial ATA ports.  I have an IDE drive hooked up as my main drive and am adding these two as a RAID.
I have 2 80GB Maxtor drives (non-SATA) with Soyo converters attached.  I've plugged one drive into each of the SATA ports.
My first question is: what drive setting should I use? Should both drives be set to Master since they're on their own ports, or use Cable Select?
Playing around with the settings gets me mixed results:
- I get an error message that the PCI IRQ setup should be checked that bus mastering is turned on (it is)
- Or I can only see one drive showing up as Master (and it's always drive 2)
I've checked connectors, power plugs, etc., and everything seems to be hooked up ok.
Any ideas?

cannot find it now but one guy with convertors found they had jumpers on them had to be set for ata133 drives to work, honestley cannot recall make, but it was not highpoint
master should be right i would have thought
one on each lead to the sata terminals

  • KT4 Ultra + Sata

    Hi there,
Got rather strange problem that came up after i had some heavy file accessing in lan movin numerous files sizing from 600mb to 2gb.
i have system which has system drive on ide raid cable. 2 regular ide drives on primary ide, one burner on secondary ide and 2 serial ata drives Seagate 160gb.
I've had this system runnin on windows xp pro past year now, up 24/7 and only rebootin it for updates and such, but basically its up months straight.
well, i went to lan-party and took my machine there ofcourse. everything worked ok there the first day but on the second windows decided to lost SATA drives from the system, well i booted, promise controller showed the drives on bootup ok and i thought no big deal, but then when i got windows up it gave "Delayed Write Failed" and only showed one of the SATA drives (other ide drives were visible)
first i thought that the other drive had died (these things happens) and shutted the machine down, i took the power cable and sata cable out from that drive and started again. much to my amaze when windows booted up it gave the same error message and couldnt find the drive that was visible last time. at that point i thought it might be motheboard gone bad. Anyway, i took both sata drives offline for the duration of the lan-party since i woudn't want to think it there.
now I've searched web for solution for similar problems, found some, but those has been related either fresh install of winxp or installing drivers or modifying cache settings etc. In my case, the machine has been up and running over a year and last thing i updated was some drivers a month ago.
if it were only one drive doing this i would simply change it at work and hopefully begone with it, but 2 identical drives bought at different times and installed at different times can't brake down at the same time, (well allright Mr.Murphy has been evil to me before but still ).
Strange thing also is that i can use both drives short amount of time, i can access all the files ok and nothing seems to be corrupt yet. both drives also makes sound that is like they're shutting down and then restarting. which would suggests that they have gone bad but then again 2 drives at same time.. grr..
I was thinkin that if the PSU has gone bad it might do this but if its that's the case, shouldn't then all the drives shutdown and restart..
i can test with another PSU but not until few days until i get back to work.
    phew.. went kinda long..
    ps: exact system config: Kt4 ultra bfisr, Athlon 2400xp, 2x256mb(ddr333), 1x512mb(ddr333), 40gb seagate(ide), 60gb ibm(ide), 80gb seagate(ide), msi dvd+-burner(4x), 2x160gb seagate(sata), Radeon 9800pro, Live player 5.1, Sirtech 360W PSU, 3com 10/100, buffalo 10/100.

  • KT4 Ultra Promise Raid Problem

    Hi,
I recently purchased a KT4 Ultra board to replace a K7T 266 board. After connecting my RAID 0 array to the 40pin IDE RAID controller on the new board, I was surprised to discover that only one hard drive was recognized. I tried every jumper combination, even iterating through ones I knew would be invalid. I switched cables, and I even tried a different hard drive. Since the two Serial ATA connectors naturally only support one drive, I would hope that some errata in the BIOS would not cause the old 40pin connector to only allow one drive. Who knows.. that was my only guess, as I've tried everything I can think of. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jeremy

ide 3 acts like a sata channel and will read one drive only
as it says on boards page you need at least one sata drive for raid
you cheapest option is 2x sata convertors
abit make them and sig do as well
i say 2 as i would not have one sata one ide in raid myself

  • K8n Neo Platinum non-booting SATA RAID setup question

I've spent several hours searching an reading trying to find out how to setup a non-bootable SATA RAID. All I can seem to find are posts about bootable installs using F6 and the drivers on a floppy.
I have setup the disks in the bios an defined the array an everything checks out. But when I boot back to WindowsXP it only sees 2 drives that it cannot find drivers for even if I point it to the correct Nvidia directory. I attempted to just reinstall the drivers but that caused a Bluescreen from a corrupt driver file that I then had to go into the repair console to copy from a floppy.
The manual an a couple of posts here say that I should go into Admin Tools-> Disk Management an it will then popup a wizard. But I'm not getting that far.
I currently have the disks on SATA 1 and 2 but will move them tonite because I've read its better for them to be on 3 and 4.
This is on a K8N Neo Platinum 7030 on Windows XP SP2.  If anyone could help or just point me to where I can find help it would be greatly appreciated.

When the raid controller is enabled in bios and you start windows you can install the nvidia raid driver
    from within windows .
Use the add hardware wizard from control panel .
    Start the add-hw wizard .
Yes i have connected the hw - next .
Add a new hw device (bottom of the list ) -next .
Install the hw that i select manually from a list - next .
    Select scsi/raid controller - next .
    Choose have disk .
Then browse for the location of the nvraid.inf file

  • SATA Raid setup details

I'm switching over my primary boot drive to 2 80 gig Hitachi SATA drives this weekend. Will use my 250g ide maxtor for storage space. I've read quite a bit about various raid problems, mostly to do with large drives, etc.
Since I'm only doing 80 gigers i'm hoping to avoid most of that. I know to connect them to SATA 3/4. After that I'm not 100% since everyone is trying so many different things to get their setup to work.
I'm installing with a Windows XP Prof (no SP's on it, though I may go on and try and Slipstream SP1 on it if needed).
On boot what bios options should be enabled\configured?
After boot do I go into sata raid controller setup? If so what do I do there?
On windows xp install startup do I hit F6 and load a driver? If so which one because I'm not sure if I got a disk with my mb or not, can't find any trace of one. If so can someone point me to it on the net?
If\after windows makes it through install and it starts asking for drivers, whats my best choices here to load. Drivers from MSI cd? Nforce drivers straight from NVidia? Any specific ide/raid drivers I should use?
I'm digging through to manual for as much as I can find also, but I know better info can be found here. I know its total RTFM stuff but this is my first venture into raid in many years and first with SATA raid. So pipe in with anything you think may help, thanks!

I think this is it, at the very bottom of the page:

  • Bios and SATA Raid setup nightmares

Three manuals with this mobo and I just can't get it set up.
I have the 865PE Neo2-FIS2R, an Intel 3.0GHZ Northwood processor, a pair of 256 memory chips configured as dual channel. A pair of SATA drives are on the Intel ports. The IDE has four devices connected, a HDD, Zip drive, and a pair of CDs. All of the hardware, jumpers, cables seem to be working fine.
My goal was to have a SATA Raid 0 setup, with the spare drive for backup and misc storage. CD's and Zip for input, burning, etc.
After everything was connected I booted Win XP Pro from the CD, did the F6 thing and installed the drivers for both Intel and Promise (Fastrack and drivers). Setting up the bios "Integrated Peripherals" was a real problem and the book very little help, but I finally got the system to recognize things so I could format and boot and install the OS. I did the Control-I thing and configured the Raid drives (at least I think). So far, so good.
After the OS was installed, SP1 added, etc. I got ready to configure the Raid. The CD does not come up with the screen shown in the manual. But I did find the Intel IAA RAID Edition in a folder. Running it results in an error message saying that the software does not support this chipset. Downloading similar drivers for both Promise and Intel always dead-ends the same way.
What I'm leaving out are the--literally--hours of time I've spent trying to get the devices configured right in the Bios' "Integrated Peripherals." I have no idea what I'm doing and the book is no help. But the devices are all there now and the OS runs fine (but not as a Raid 0 set up).
The book says I can migrate this configuration to a Raid volume. How, when I get that error message?
And another thing. Can I use the Promise IDE (PATA) port for a single drive? It's the only place on the mobo where ATA 133 is supported.
I think I'm in a world of trouble here. Don't know squat about these complex bios setups. Sorry this is so long.
    ardi

OK, I actually went down to the basement and dug out the ICH5R Raid Manual. Basically it says in order to take advantage of the ability to migrate later on, you have to set Raid in Bios B4 loading Windows and install Raid driver with Windows setup. If you've already got Windows installed on 1 disk and had Bios set to"SATA as Raid- NO", you're out of luck.
Here's the exerpt from the manual:
    Quote
The Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition offers the flexibility to
upgrade from a single Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive to a two drive RAID 0
configuration when an additional SATA hard drive is added to the system.
This process will create a new RAID volume from an existing disk. However,
several important steps must be followed at the time the system is first
configured in order to take advantage of RAID when upgrading to a second
    SATA hard drive:
    1. BIOS must be configured for RAID before installing Windows* XP
on the single SATA hard drive.
    2. Install the Intel Application Accelerator RAID driver during Windows
    Setup.
    3. Install the Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition after the
    operating system is installed.
    Maybe someone knows a work-around?

  • Kt4 ultra bsr - raid

hey guys  - i want to run my hd from the ide raid port but i am not sure how to load the drivers or get the port working!
when i connect my drive to the port it says no drive found insert system boot disc
please anyone explain what i need to do!

Go in BIOS to Integrated Peripherals at Onboard PCI Controller, check and enable Serial ATA Controller. Reboot. You should see the prompt:
            " FastTrack 376 (tm) BIOS Version ...
            No array defined... ".
Press there CTRL + F to enter the raid setup - select Auto Setup and press CTRL + Y to reboot. Then return tu BIOS (pressing Del) and select under  Advanced Bios Features the Boot Sequency and chose under 1st Boot device the device that look like BSR-TT400XC or something (cannot remember  :])
Why Haven't you readed the manuals included with your mobo? Nope.

  • 975X SATA + RAID Setup

Hi, I'm fairly new to RAIDing and I was wondering how to setup up my drives.
I currently have one WD Raptor 10k 74GB drive that now acts as my OS drive.  I just recently ordered another and I would like to RAID them together (SATA of course).  I'm very confused on how to actually do this.  I've read through the user guide for a long time, searched through damn near every SATA 975X post and still I have little to no knowledge on how to set this up.
I know I will lose all the data on my existing drive and as far as I can tell, I have the BIOS set up correctly...  Meaning I set the SATA mode for RAID.
I also know that there is some sort of configuration for the Intel RAID device settings, which you are supposed to hit (Ctrl + I) during POST in order edit your RAID mode and which drives you want to use for your RAID array.  The problem with this is that I can't seem to get it to work.  I don't know if I'm not hitting this at the right time, or even if i have to do it at all.
I've also heard that you might need to copy drivers to a floppy to get install the Intel RAID to be recognized before your WinXP install.  This I think i can do on my own, but initally setting up the RAID 0 is my main concern right now.  Thanks for any posts in advance,
    JPS

I figured out what the problem was.....
I have a PCI IDE controller card that was conflicting with the Intel RAID controller.   It would not allow the RAID to even show up at POST.
After removing the card i could simply hit CTRL + I and configure my Raid.   But now, Im out of 2 IDE controllers, which is a whole separate post in itself, thanks for the help.

  • SATA RAID setup problem - 845PE Max2 FISR

    Hi,
I have tried to switch from XP made RAID 1 (striping) to BIOS (SATA) supported one.
    1. Detached 2xIBM 80G disks from IDE1
    2. Attached a ViPower VP-9041 SATA to Ultra ATA (33/66/100/133) converter to each.
    3. Changed the jumper on the slave disk to master.
    4. Attached the disks to the SATA ports.
    5. At boot checked if SATA is enabled in the BIOS - OK. (Not too many or sophisticated options can be found in my bios, see below.)
Originally the a 40GB Maxtor on IDE3 (supported by the Promise 376 SATA chipset as well) used for XP SP2 boot - it remained this way.
At first boot FastTrak BIOS detected IDE3 (as before) and scanned for other IDE drives, but detected only one of the two 80 GB SATA converted disks.
At later boots, neither SATA disks detected, but I got the folowing message from FastTrak BIOS:
Warning- FastTrak does not detect proper interrupts. Please check your PCI IRQ settings, and make sure the PCI slot supports Bus Master operations.
IDE3 disk detected correctly and the system can boot from it.
If I remove ony one of the SATA disks, no warning from BIOS, but the other SATA disk is not detected either.
Any hint? (Changing PCI Bus Master state in the BIOS to either enable or disable does not matter.)
    My BIOS is AMI 3.31a.

Now I got another 845PE-MAX2-FISR from the dealer, and this one works!!
So the conclusion is, the other 845PE-MAX2-FISR coursed the ram error...
    >> Assaf
    Ofcourse its a legal one!

  • KT4 Ultra Raid Setup

Ok I want to set up a raid set for performance and am lacking an understanding of the setup.
    Here is my configuration:
    MSI KT4 Ultra w/Raid
    GF4 4200 Ti
    AMD Athlon 2100+
    2x 256 333MHz Generic RAM
Intel Pro 100 Management Adapter (LAN)
    2x 10 Gig Maxtor ATA100 5400 RPM HD's
    1x 60 Gig Maxtor ATA100 7200 RPM HD
    1 CDRW
    1 52x CDROM
This is what I have tried
Put 1 10 gig drive on Primary IDE as master w/ 60 gig as slave
    Both CD's on Secondary IDE
1x 10 Gig on RAID Controller (onboard)
When I go into the fast track utility and autoconfigure for performance its shows as only having one drive in the array. In the setup guide it shows that option as 2 drives in the array.
Is there something wrong with my setup?
Why does only one drive show up in the array?
I havent installed an OS yet but it will be 98.
The main drive on Primary IDE has been partitioned with Fdisk as a single active partition and nothing has been done with the second. It's my understanding it will be built when the raid is functioning, is this right?
Thx in advance for your time. Great forum by the way. Cheers to the techies witht he answers. Incidentally i'm not a newbie with comps just with RAID so technical is fine.

     KT4 Ultra
    Thx for the response guys.
I understand that I may only use one drive with the IDE3. My board does have 2 serial ata connectors on it as well.
If I only use the IDE3 with one hard drive will the mirror work correctly if I use the same drive (same model specs etc) on the primary ide and use my 60 gig as a secondary drive on the primary as well (i know the 60 will not work with the mirror) All i want is the performance increase for now until the serial drives drop in price and become more readily available.
So my config would be as follows:
1 12 gig drive on pri ide as master
1 60 gig on pri ide as slave
    1 12 on ide3 for mirror.
If i use this will i get increased performance as far as load times etc?

  • KT4 Ultra (6590) need update of the Promise SATA RAID Controller PDC20376

The last Bios update AMI 1.4 for the KT4 Ultra (6590) have built in the bios version 1.00.0.18 for the PDC20376 (Promise 376).
    I can configure 2 maxtor (6E040T0) sata1 in a raid0 array and it works under WinXP SP3,
but the 2 drives are working in UDMA5 according to the FastBuild Utility when the motherboard specifications talks about 150Mb (SATA1).
It's not an OS problem because the FastBuild Utility at Bios startup show the UDMA5 mode for HDD.
It's not a Maxtor 6E040T0 (SATA1) problem because have no jumper to set.
The Promise support center don't provide support for built in raid controller but the responce was that it's related to a known bios issue of the controller, so i have to update.
For the last Bios version for the S150 TX4 controller look at:
    http://promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?productId=108&category=all&os=100&go=GO
It's impossible to update the bios with the promise tool because the controller is integrated in the motherboard.
I read for example than on the motherboard K7N2 Delta-ILSR the bios version of the Promise 376 controller is 1.00.0.21:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=92756.msg665966#msg665966
I think the only solution is a modding bios, where i have to replace only the Promise controller bios but:
    1) The tool amibcp.exe can't open the A6590VMS.140 AMI bios (renamed .rom), i don't know why!!!
    2) What promise controller bios rom file is good?
Can anyone out there help . . . please ?

This is my results compared to my other UDMA6 HDD on IDE1, HDTach long bench stop with "Read Error" and only quick bench works.
The version of the Controller driver under WinXP-SP3 is 1.0.1.29 and I configured the driver in the PAM Utility with:
"Driver Write Cache" enabled and "Write Back" as cache settings (The 2 Maxtor SATA1 in RAID have 2MB of cache, but i don't know How many cache have the controller!!).
The Burst Speed is too strange!!! quick bench error?

  • KT4 Ultra and SATA

I have a KT4 Ultra that supports SATA Raid and Im looking at getting a new HDD. CAn I run my old PATA HDD with a SATA HDD without it being in raid format or do the disk have to be in a raid format.

    Hey guys, how about this:
MSI KT4 Ultra SR, Win2000, PDC 20376 Promise Serial ATA chip on board.  WD 40gig IDE hd as primary on IDE 1.  Attached a Maxtor 120gig SATA to the Serial ATA 1 connector. While booting did NOT setup an array.  Windows 2000 in Disk Management under Device Manager/Disk Drives has now two folders, one for the WD and one that says SCSI Disk Device.  It's also also recognized under System Information/Components/Storage as SCSI controlled by the Fast Track 376 controller.   Is this a proper way to setup the serial Maxtor as an extra single drive in the system attached to the Serial interface?  Is this even possbile?  My problem is that while the drive is recognized as a SCSI disk device as described above, it is NOT seen under Disk Management as a new unformatted drive with a new letter.  Assuming the above setup is correct, how do I format the drive so Windows can use it?  Any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

  • Raid BIOS Gone (KT4 Ultra-BSR)

I recently bought a Serial ATA Hard Drive wanting to install it on the raid controller.  But when I went to enter the Raid Controller's BIOS FastBuild Setup (at boot-time), it never shows up.
I have the KT4 Ultra-BSR, and I can see the RAID Controller enable/disable option in the Integrated Peripherals.  I have it enabled, but it NEVER  displays the RAID bios at boot-up.  This is the second KT4 Ultra I've had and I know I saw the RAID bios on the first one I had. I have the latest system BIOS installed (1.30).
Has anyone experienced this and/or know how to fix it? Is there a way for flash the RAID controller to possibly fix it?  Did the entry to the setup change from whats in the manual (ctrl-F4)?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I've seen a couple other post like yours Shark. While that makes me feel a little more comfortable that other are having similar problems, I thinks mine's a little different.  I don't ever remember seeing the RAID BIOS on this motherboard.  I've tried turning it off and on in a row to see if mine would eventuall show, but I never see it.
Does anyone from MSI read these? I think something should be done.
