similar to that
create array in raid bios
set scsi second to cdrom in boot order
hit f6 and feed in drivers as os starts to load

  • KT4 Ultra SERIAL to PARALLEL ata

    Dear joint users,
Just like many people I am also misled by MSI's first manual concerning the IDE3 issue. The good news is that there are converters available from SERIAL ata to PARALLEL ata. The bad news is that this converter seems to be included with a raid controller. Currently I am questioning around whether someone sells these cables separately and against what price.
In case one knows more on this issue I'd appreciate informing us via this topic. Thanks in advance!

OK the issue kt4 ultra and msi concerning the serillel converters reached a head which is not satisfactory at all in my case, but I am tired and fed up trying to communicate (via a third party) with MSI.
I even don't want to spend my energy going to MyStar in Son since it is useless though I live only 5 kms away from the industrial zone Ekkersrijt where MyStar resides in The Netherlands.
MSI stands firm not compensating the pioneers who bought the kt4 ultra thinking being able to stripe two hard disks on IDE3 because manual 1.0 clearly described this could be done.
A representative at MSI NL told the wholesale and end users MSI DO NOT manufacture/ supply a comparing product as ABIT supplies with their mainboard (serrilel converter). The story ends users should buy these converters themselves since these end users were pioneers buying the kt4 ultra.
This explanation stinks heavily, it's sad a company like MSI hides behind the golden rule in their manuals "no guarantee is given as to the correctness of its contents"
In my case I traded in the KT4 Ultra BR for the KT3 Ultra2 BR. But be sure it was the last time I bought a product which holds the MSI-star.

  • KT4 Ultra CPU Upgrade Question

I am trying to upgrade my CPU from a 2100 XP to a 2800 XP on my KT4 Ultra and am running into trouble.  I was under the impression that all I had to do was turn up the FSB frequency in CMOS and everything would be OK howerver this doesn't appear to be the case.  Currently the FSB Freq. is set to 100 and I can get it above 104 or the system will not POST.  Has anyone out there put a 2800 with the latest BIOS in a KT4?  What setting need to be changed and what values should be used in CMOS??
    Help please!!!!

  • Macbook Pro i5 Serial ATA Question

Please be kind, I am a Windows users that just purchased his first Mac, the new 15 pro. When looking at the system profiler, I see the following for my ATA controller:
    Intel 5 Series Chipset:
    Vendor: Intel
    Product: 5 Series Chipset
    Link Speed: 3 Gigabit
    Negotiated Link Speed: 1.5 Gigabit
    Description: AHCI Version 1.30 Supported
I read a lot online about the Macbook Serial ATA "1.5Gb" problem. Is that what I am seeing here?

Although this Hitachi drive can use the 3.0 Gb/s interface, I think this drive is only 1.5 Gb/s. The key identifier is the trailing "A02" characters. If it ended in "300" it would be a 3 Gb/s drive.
** Maybe; but after perusing the Hitachi website, it looks to me like the key identifier of whether or not it is a 1.5 or 3.0 speed drive is the LETTER preceding the last two digits; i.e.; A00 = 1.5Gbps S00 = 3.0Gbps.
Although not documented in Apple's specs for the Macbook Pro, I am suspecting those who order the 500 GB drive may be receiving a 3.0 GB/s drive, at least if it's the 7200 rpm option. Anyone with that drive please post the model number.
It might be best to contact them before you order to confirm that the 7200rpm option is indeed a SATA II capable drive.
Just FWIW, I went to the Genius Bar at the Apple store and the person there stated that the MBP's are SATA II capable but needs a SATA II enabled drive to take advantage of the 3.0Gbps interface / link speed.

  • KT6 Delta-FIS2R Serial ATA Question

I have 2 maxtor 80gb serial ATA drives on order, should be here anyday now.  Can't wait!!
Now with the KT6 Delta-FIS2R am i right in thinking it has 2 serial ata controller cards (via & promise?) each supporting 2 drives.
Which controller do you recommend i plug my drives into?  I intend making a 160gb JBOD stripe set with the 2 disks.  Is there much difference between the two?
With the via it appears you can make/delete the raid config thru the bios.  Do you have to ctrl-? to get into the promise to do the same?
Apologies for my lack of understanding but i haven't really played with the MB much as i'm waiting for the drives to arrive.
Also, what is the recommended stripe size?  the book says 64k, is this correct in practice?  I will be making a 20gb system partition and the remaing 140gb for data and the pc will just be for general use (downloaded files, re-encoding dvds, maybe the odd game)
    bios updates?
What is the recommended patch levels for the motherboard and both serial-ata controllers?
    Many thanks for your time.

Yup, seen the perf. figures... System does seem really fast, but when you're coming from a PIII with 5400rpm and 512k cache, anything is fast   Got to remember benchmarks are just that and real performance lies somewhere between 0 and benchmarks...
For setup, I think I've seen mention that you should build the SATA array as the only HDD in the system as a first off otherwise the OS tries to install to the IDE drive. Haven't tried this, but just to let you know.
Also, you have to create the RAID array in the BIOS and also set the array to be a boot device in the BIOS. Without doing this the OS doesn't appear to install correctly (and you certainly won't be able to boot it!!).
I don't think there is any performance degredation to splitting the disk into two except if one of the partitions becomes full. When it gets full, it is much more difficult to defrag the drive (and seek time is what ruins disk performance). I've found that you need 20-30% free to be able to sensibly defrag drives (with large files on there). If you believe you'll only ever use 12-15GB for your system, then fire away - but bear in mind I've used that in the first 4 weeks with my system (without the video files...). Games can be a few hundreds of MB each so they soon mount up if you are not careful...
Just have fun and enjoy a really fast system and dont forget a separate backup HDD (or get another 2 SATA drives and run a RAID 0+1 off the Promise controller...) - and not one of the partitions!!

  • MBP 2010 Serial-ATA question

    Hello,
I have read all technical information online about the new MBP 17'' 2010 but it doesn't say what's the Serial-ATA link speed i.e. is it 3Ghz or 6Ghz?
I have a MBP 2009 that shows Serial-ATA 3Ghz link speed and wanted to know if the new MBP highest end already support 6Ghz as this would be a very compelling reason to upgrade too
    TIA,
    Best regards,

Overall my system works great.  Extremely CPU/disk intensive pro music

card to work properly (wacky drivers) as well as USB.  It's unclear whether the
VIA USB drivers can work in Win98 FE (which I chose for having the lowest MM

  • Pb ? MSI KT4 Ultra

    Hello,
I own a msi kt4 ultra motherboard, 512 Mo Ram Twinmos PC3200 and an athlon xp1700+@2012 MHz (175*11.5)
One day, I managed to boot at 194*10.5 but now, it is very instable with any fsb > 180. Where is the pb ? Is it due to the PCI or the AGP ? (because the coef is still 1/5 nd not 1/6 ?)
Is it very impossible to succesfully boot at 200MHz with a KT4 Ultra ?
    Other  question :
I manage to boot with my ram at cas 2-3-2-6-2Ways but not 2-2-3 or 2-2-2
It is very strange that I can put the RAS precharge at 2 clocks but not the RAS to CAS
    Couls anyone help me ?
(sorry for my english , I'm french...)

but its very doutfull the board would run at it
it only has 1/5 divider so at 200 fsb agp would be at 80 not 66 and pci at 40 not 33

  • Serial ATA on MSI KT4 Ultra FISR??

    Hello
Just a general query here about Serial ATA on the 6590 board (KT4 Ultra FISR).
I am hoping to build a system with this board and was hoping to start with only one HD, preferably an 80Gb Serial ATA drive.  Does the promise raid controller on this board allow you to boot on a single serial ATA drive?
P.S.  I was also hoping to add a Radeon 9700 card (not pro) but have read about many problems within this forum.  Does anyone know if the problems have been cleared?
    Thanks
     ?(

Well, my idea was to buy a Serial ATA drive from the outset and use it as the only HD in the system.  Therefore, it would have to start on the serial ATA raid port.
The only other boot option I can see which may be relevant is "Legacy SCSI".  Doesn't sound right though.  There are also a lot of BBS (BIOS boot specification) choices from 0 to 9 but I dont know what they are.
There are about 25 boot options including from USB CDROM drives but nothing specific to RAID!

  • KT4 Ultra and new Serial ATA drive

    Hi there
I've got a WinXP machine with a KT4 ultra, 2 regular IDE hard drives, a CD write and DVD (all working fine).
Yesterday I bought a Serial ATA DiamondMax Plus9 160Gb to use as a 3rd drive. I don't want it to use RAID, I just want it as an additional drive available to windows.
I fitted the drive last night, but when the BIOS runs through the drives at the start it didn't show up. I did however get the RAID utility come up on the screen, and by pressing Ctrl-F it allowed me to create a RAID array (which I didn't).
When I got into windows the drive couldn't be seen, running Maxblaster found a SCSI drive but thought it was 0 bytes capacity.
Can anyone tell me if what I want to do is even possible?
And if so, how do it do it?
    Thanks in advance
    Rich

Hi Sharp, thanks for the info.
I have the promise drivers installed, so there really shouldn't be a problem there.
Having scanned through a load of other messages on here, updating the BIOS has been recommended.
I was a bit wary of doing this as I have a history of messing up machines, what are other's experiences with upgrading the BIOS?
    Thanks again
    Rich

  • KT4 Ultra Question

ok well this might be stupid of me to ask..but to me there are no stupid questions.
What is the best way to set up my hard drive and cd rom....can i use ATA 1 master and 1 slave..or do i need to use the ide 1 and ide 2 or how does it work...im just wondering if it would be better for me or should i leave things the way they are....i know this board has 1 ata slot and the harddrive supports ata..so i was just curious.
    Specs.
MSI KT4 Ultra SR BIOS V1.3
    Athlon XP 1700+ ThouroughBred @1.7ghz 140x12.5=1755Mhz
    512 MB DDR PC2100 266Mhz
    Gforce Ti 4600 128MB DDR 4xAGP
SoundBlaster Live Gamer 5.1 pci sound card
Maxtor 20Gb HD DiamondMax Plus D740X
    Antec SL400 400watt PSU

you don't say what kind of cd-rom you have but anyways...
Set each up as a master on their own channel. If you set them up on the same channel, the channel will only run as fast as the slowest device, thus making your hard drive run slower.

  • Question about serial ata

Does anyone know when or if msi is going to do the serial ata's for the mobo and hd?

Hi the soon to be released KT4 will support serial data and ide both making it a nice board to own. It will also support USB2.0, 8X agp , and ddr3200 ram. It should be out real soon. http://www.Maxtor.com has some good info about serial ata. BIGDADDY51 CT.USA Also cards and adapters are being made for us guys with older boards.

  • Serial ATA to IDE Ultra ATA-100/133 Mini Converter Board~ Is it worth it???

I was considering installing a Serial ATA to IDE Ultra ATA-100/133 Mini Converter Board to run my ultra ATA devices.
Is it worth the trouble or would it bog my system down for a small increase in transfer rate????
    Thanks
    DD

I've got two IDE hard drives that have the converter board that plugs into SATA on my mobo. I didn't see that much of a performance gain until I went to RAID. I had IDE RAID and it worked alright. When I put the adapters on, the speed increased by at least double. I would say this is due to a more refined RAID controller, though, but it definately wouldn't hurt your performance any.

  • IDE...ATA...Serial ATA...Ultra ATA.....Mega ATA .... YIKES!!

IDE...ATA... Serial ATA... Ultra ATA..... Mega ATA .... YIKES !!!!
Which one do I need for my Tibook DVI ?
I gotta order something quick to save my (computing) existence and am not seeing consistently the same terminology in ads. Some say one, some say t'other.
For instance, I get that a lot of people are happy with the Toshiba 7K60 unit and on the Tosh. site it says "ATA-6 hard disk drive".
But I can get a great price on the Toshiba 7K100 - which ostensibly would seem to be a beefier choice - and on the same site it says " Supports both Parallel & Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s interfaces"
Is this one and the same thing ?
What do I have to stay away from ?
Many thanks and à bientôt !

As far as I can see the difference between those drives is slim 12.5mm or ultra slim 9.5mm height. (Are you sure there not Hitachi?) I'm 95% sure the TiBooks will take the 12.5mm drives.I recommend looking in Apple System Profile to see exactly what model you currently have installed and then find one with the same dimensions.
