KT4 Ultra - Set fsb through bios or jumpers?
Hello all, I have a kt4 ultra and have been experiencing stability problems these past few months. I have an athlon xp 2600+ (333mhz) and whenever I set the fsb to 166mhz in the bios and clock it up to the factory speed, my whole computer shuts down.
Initially I thought it was a power issue, but after testing it with 3 good power supplies (good strong amps), I found that it could be another problem.
It is not a heat issue either because I am running that computer open case. Tested RAM and all seems fine (Crucial ddr).
After staring at the motherboard for a few minutes I noticed there were "fsb jumpers" pins 1-6 near the cpu. for pins 1-2 and 3 and 4, the table etched on the board says its 166mhz fsb. So I set it to that, and whenever I set the same fsb settings in the bios multiplied by even 15.0, after reboot it reports 933Mhz. I was running through the windows setup @this speed fine, but during the HD format it shuts itself off.
Furthermore whenever those fsb jumpers are cleared the default 100mhz fsb kicks in clocking the processor at 1250MHz..upping the fsb to 167 and multiplying by 12.5 doesnt help either--it just shuts down.
Here are the rest of the specs of the system:
-2 x 256MB Crucial Cas 2.5 DDR
-Nvidia geforce fx 5200 128MB
-40GB HD
-Plextor 16x10x40 Burner
-DVD-Rom
-Bios is latest 1.4 release
I have read the FAQ regarding this board and the "wait 15min" procedure when clearing the board's CMOS. Even after following all that, I still get the same thing.
ahhh this is driving me insane
-C
"...I have read the FAQ regarding this board and the "wait 15min" procedure when clearing the board's CMOS. Even after following all that, I still get the same thing..." Does it mean there are no changes in Bios after clearing CMOS ? You don't need to wait if you drain all current on Mobo after disconnecting P.Su. from wall socket and taking off battery, by pressing case power button. What is memory speed ? Both memory same make ? Have you tried with only 1 memory ? What are AMPS. actual P.Su. gives to 3.3v. 5v. and 12v. rails ? BTW. If. Mobo has jumpers to set FSB you should use them to set FSB. not Bios's.

Kt4 ultra max FSB 112mhz w/ xp2000+
Hello there,
for over a year i've been running my system with the FSB tweaked so that my xp 2000+ was running at about 1760mhz very stably. I recently installed a Radeon 9800xt and while tweaking my bios the system became very unstable. while tweaking after the radeon installation, I had set the fsb set to 141mhz (inadvertantly) thats when the instability started occuring. the system will reboot spiratically, lock up, etc. I've found that if I underclock the FSB to 112mhz that the system performs well without any problems to speak of. I have tried removing all peripherals from the PCI bus, and have also swapped out my video card for the previous one that worked well (geforce ti200), reset the bios to defaults and one by one tweaked it back to where is should be, but none of those efforts seems to allow me to clock my fsb any higher than 112/113mhz with stability, leaving my processor underclocked at 1400mhz (from 1.66). I have reseated my ram, and bios reports that my power ratings are within range of where they should be. here is my configuration:
-xp pro sp1
-MSI KT4-ulta (6590) with the latest via 4 in 1 chipset drivers
-Amibios v1.4
-Athlon XP 2000+ w/ thermaltake volcano 6cu+, and Silicone Heatsink goo
-SB live! plat.
-Radeon 9800xt
-512MB geil pc3200 cas 2.5 6-3-3 2t DDR ram (set to SPD in bios) (will only run at 333 wont post at 400mhz.. even tho the sticker on the ram says its pc3200, a windows based diag (one that I was refered to from here, cant remember the name) I ran says its only pc2700) - I ran docmem 2.0 through 30 loop cycles of the burn-in test with the DDR set at 333mhz with 0 faults.
-bios has been tested in both default configs, and tweaked configs.. with no increase in stability when I tried to move the FSB above 113mhz.. I also tried reducing the DDR FSB to 200 and that didn't help me move the FSB above 113 either.
-antec 430W power supply.. bios reports that it is within parameters.
CPU after about 14 hours of looped benchmarking heats out at 48C (42C idle) my case temp runs just about 10-12 degrees above ambient room temp at (82F-85F) - I've been watching this parameter in bios closely as I have been testing the system, and I have not seen the CPU temp go above 50C-52C no matter how high I set the fsb (highest i've set it is 141mhz).
I've been reading the posts in here for about a week to see if I could enlighten myself, but none of the previous posts recommendations that I have tried have seemed to work. seems like recommendations I've read on this board about stability problems state that either the power supply is bad/not big enough or improper cooling as the cause most of the problems. but mine was working fine for a whole year with the processor overclocked to 1.76ghz (from 1.66) until I overclocked the FSB to 141 (which I acctually did by mistake).. then it went kaput.
about the only thing I can think of that I've seen suggested here previously that I havn't tried is reseating the cooling fan. but I'm reluctant to mess with it considering the potential to damage the chip when reattaching it, so I've been saving it for last.
I would appreciate any insight that you experts can provide.. I'm just about ready to dump the MB/processor and buy a new one.. but I'm concerned that maybe its the ram.. then I'd be wasting my money on the MB/proc. just to have the same problem with a new setup.
Thank you for your consideration!!
Sadian
[email protected]I'll give memtest86 a shot. I was up on experts exchange and a friend up there suggested the following and I thought it would be appropriate to post it here considering this is the MSI HQ Support Forum..:
Comment from terageek on http://www.experts-exchange.com:
Since tweaking the FSB frequency is what causes the instability, I would guess that you either toasted your CPU or your chipset. Since you say that you never got a temp above 52C on the CPU, I doubt it is the CPU. You may just need a new MOBO.
How realistic does that sound?.. I would think if I toasted either that they wouldn't work at all??? do think there might be any creedance to those comments, if so, whats the best AMD mobo for the enthusiast / overclocker under $150 U.S. that will use my current processor??
Your input is greatly valued!!

Hi all!
I have a BIG problem, I have tried to look at this board, but there is many different answers out there ;(
I have KT4 Ultra with Athlon XP 2600+
I have set FSB to 166, and when I startup BIOS says Athlon XP 2600+.
But in windows system, it only says:
AMD Athlon XP2600+

Why is windows only says 2.09Ghz??
AND, I think my system is very slow. I used to have AMD 1200Mhz. And this sytem is almost like my last computer.

KT4 Ultra (MS-6590) very slow boot
i got a strange one here:
i replaced my MSI K7T Turbo2 with a KT4 Ultra. Since i got the new board installed (the KT4 Ultra) the machine needs very long until it reads mbr of the disk. what i exactly mean is, post boot goes with normal speed. all settings (FSB speed, DDR speed, CPU speed) are correct. after post boot, when it should start to load windows from the disk, it takes > 1 minute until the boot screen of windows shows up. after windows could boot, i don't have any problems anymore (speed rocks). i did not have this problem with the K7T Turbo2 board and except memory i still use the same components:
MSI KT4 Ultra w 1.4 BIOS
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (not oc'ed) (~36-43C)
MSI G4Ti4200-TD(MS-8870)
Adaptec 39160 64bit dual (in a 32bit slot ;( )
3*Seagate ST318452LW X15 Ultra160 15K RPM
1 GB PC-2700 DDR (2x512MB)
Creative Soundblaster Audigy Gamer
Compaq NC3123 FastEthernet NIC
Logitech Mousman (dual optical) USB
Microsoft Sidewinder USB
the boot delay was not only when booting from the disks, i had the same experience when booting from cdrom: after post boot about 1 min. nothing and then excpected speed.
any idea?
thanks sidderzthanks for the hints,
at the stage where boot is delayed so bad, HD access has not even been happened. the OS did not even start to load. so i don't believe the OS has anything to do with it. (except msi found a way to load the OS without read access to the drives )
like i said, right after post boot after floppy seek (my boot order: floppy, cdrom, scsi id 0) the machine just stops (for me it looks like bios is waiting for an answer and then times out) with a black monitor (but signal seems to be still there cause the monitor doesn't go to stand-by). first i thought about an IRQ conflict, but i took care to not use pci slots with shared IRQ's. when the computer starts to read from the disks, boot process is fast as expected. but until the system even starts to boot the os from the disks (read access to mbr on disks), more than one minute just nothing happens, not even disk access. i also checked if the computer is just frozen, but this was not the case, at least the keyboard was not frozen (numlock/capslock and reboot with ctrl+alt+del still worked)
honestly i believe it's a bios issue -
KT4 Ultra APCI power management problems
After I boot I must go into Win98 power management propertys and apply to get any power management functions to work. And then all I can get is monitor blank and hardrive power down. Unit will not go into suspend.
If I use the suspend feature in power down the unit will go into suspend (Susp to ram) but all the fans keep running. When I come out of suspend, the system becomes unstable and quirky.
Can anyone help me get this running the way it should.

A couple of weeks ago I installed quite a few of the
patches in the recommended list.
Since then, I get the following message repeated
continually in the console window:
DPMSSet: Invalid argument
Power management problems
I'm runnig solaris 8 on a ultra 5. I looked in the
power.config file and in the startup scripts, but
couldn't find any reference to "DPMSSet." Any ideas on
the cause and solution of the message?
I never use the powerd daemon, so killing the process
seems to eliminate the messages.

KT4 Ultra won't boot if I change settings in BIOS
I can't change any cmos settings either. If I change anything in the bios at all it won't boot. it will turn on but won't boot. so I have to clear the cmos to get into windows and my 2500+ Barton is running at 1050mhz because I can't set the fsb to 166(333) like I should be able to. And I just bought the chip yesterday.

Well, its not yet conclusive that your BIOS is bad, all we are saying at this stage is that with a new CPU, you can change settings but it will not Boot. Correct?
When you update a BIOS you only do not always change all the data stored in the memory.
I have, before now, resorted to to using the emergency recovery feature of the BIOS that is well documented.
This way, subject to the memory not having any bad addresses, you completely re-program the BIOS I.C.
Have you tried BIGRHINO suggestion first?

Correct FSB for KT4 ultra 6950
Hi, I have a KT4 Ultra 6950 v1.0 (it has SATA so I think it's the "FISR" version but I don't know, nothing on mobo)
A few months ago, the speed of my PC took a nosedive, and I wonder if somehow the FSB has been reset/mis-set.
It's currently 100Mhz. I ran Fuzzy Logic 4, and it topped out at just 103Mhz.
However, I understand the KT4 should handle 200Mhz.
The memory is all 2700 (166Mhz) (1gb+512mb at the moment, another 1gb on order from crucial)
The CPUs are running at 50 degrees, the HDD at 60 degrees.
I don't know if I should manually set the FSB to 166 in the bios or not, bit scared!
Below is the output from CPU-Z. Sorry if I should have cut bits out, I'm not too sure what's important and what's not...
Anyone have any advise as to what the FSB should be set to please? Either to overclock it, or simply to put it to the 'correct' value?
Thanks,
Toby

Unfortunately I don't know the OPN. It's not being reported by any of the half dozen CPU reporting programs I've tried, and I don't really fancy taking the cooling fan off to find it
However I did find out that my CPU is a Thoroughbred Athlon XP. I still don't know the speed, but the MSI CPU list shows that the FSB should either be 133 or 166
I tried using "Fuzzy Logic 4" to set the FSB to 133, but the PC just instantly rebooted. I could try setting it to 166, or setting it in the bios directly, but now I'm afraid I'll either blow it up, or it won't boot and I'll need to blank the CMOS, which I'd prefer to avoid.
Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated, thanks

KT4 Ultra FSB prob! HELP!
Hey all,
I'm having an issue trying to get my fsb up to 133mhz w/ the kt4 ultra. It sticks at 100. Also it's detecting my processor speed as a 1500 instead of the 2100xp that it is. I hope you guys can help me, it seems like I'm not the only one to have this problem. My other hardware is great, just moved it over from an old computer. I'm still new at this whole msi thing, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Here's my hardware config too. Thanks guys,
Justice

Did you set in the BIOS - CPU FSB to 133Mhz?
Start read here, most probably is cooler location or thermal grease application, as ur PSU seems OK. -
Hi
I have a question about BIOS flashing for the KT4-Ultra FISR board. I currently have version 1.1 of the BIOS and was told that I need at least 1.2 to recognize my AthlonXP 2500+ correctly. (It currently shows as a 1.1Ghz athlon with the FSB set to 100MHz * 11 multiplier)
Is it worth moving up to 1.3 or 1.4 instead of just 1.2?
Thanks

Antec Soho 1080 case (430W truepower supply)I would have to guess BIOS may make a difference. Although XP2200+ and XP2500+ Barton both run at 1.83GHz, the BIOS may be confused as to the processor type if the Barton was released after the initial BIOS version. Only 2700+ and 2800+ were 333 FSB at the time of BIOS release maybe... then again, I am a useless tech... just a guess is all I have to offer.

have a strange paradox regarding disturbing message at boot up.
when i boot my system i recieve a message:
"no drive attached to fast track controller. no bios detected.."
i love msi boards and have used this forum in past very sucessfully with the assistance of BAS.
I donated my old system to a freind in need. It was all of 11 months old and was a very stable system built on a k7t pro 2-ru. It had all the bells and whistles. what a mistake.
my new system is as follows:
kt4 ultra fisr
256 mb ddr3200 samsung (as recommended by msi)
m-audio revolution 7.1
ati all in one wonder radeon 8500 64mb
2-80gb western digital special edition hard drives
dvd/cd combo lg electronics gcc-4320b
athalon xp 2200
550 watt antec tru-power psu
lian li case with 4 fans (of which only 3 work with the power supply while allowing fan monitoring)
klipsch pro-media 5.1 speakers
winxp pro
how i got there to the afore mentioned msge regarding controller and no bios detected...
I was experiencing a lot of problems with the new set up
such as:
1. system crashes while viewing tv
2. unexplained boot up of system in the middle of the
night (that was freaky and kind of humorous)
3. other system reboots and difficulty of system
shutdown
4. device driver failure messages regarding the ati card
such as "atimmc.exe driver failure"
all system crashes revolved around the ati card and after recoveries many registeries were messed with as expected.
all in all I got by with the system as long as i remained off applications involving the radeon card.
last week I checked into the forum here and noticed issues with this motherboard and radeon cards.
i went to the ati site noticed updated drivers, and at the msi site, updated bios for the kt4 ultra boards.
i did not have a floppy so i backed off flashing the new bios onto the board. I currently have the first version (1.00 or something), the screen flashes so briefly these days.
i decided to reformat the drives and reload xp onto the new system and then retreive the newer drivers for ati card. upon installation while reading my neurophysiology book upon boot up is when xp informed me that no bios was detected. xp asked me if i wanted to continue. so i did continue with sucessfull installation of xp.
being quite surprised that i could still get system on board, i am wondering how to get the bios to be detected and if I should try and flash new bios, if this will correct this. I am also with fresh install of xp having no difficulties shutting down system now and i am no longer having mystery unassisted boots of the system.
all in all, before the bios problem i was just wondering about the stability of the board with the ati radeon card.
Now I am very concerned with the message, "no driver attached to fast track controller... no bois detected"
any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
Boy, do i miss that k7t board...
thank you,
EricDo NOT worry about the fasttrack controller message!!
It just says you don't have any serial-ATA disk attached. This is how to get rid of the message:
In BIOS:
=> Integrated Peripherals
=> OnBoard PCI Controller
=> Serial ATA ---> set this to "Disabled"
Can't say I experience any of your other problems, although I had some problems with the sound card the first time I installed.
Seems as if the problems are fewer the more times you install/format the system.....actually experienced that on a couple of MSI-cards. In the end, everything has worked fine for me, so I'm happy with them (except design and layout of the new nForce K7N2G-cards!! ridiculous!) -
KT4 Ultra FISR Updated Bios Still Reboots
I bought a KT4 Ultra last week. I hooked up everything needed to install my OS (Video and Hard Drive) to install Windows 2000. It took me a while to get a good install because it would crash in the middle of Win2K setup. After reading the posts on the subject I upgraded the Bios to 1.3. I no longer had problems with installing software of transferring large files between CD and HD. Although a bit slow, it worked.
But now I have another problem. The computer reboots when the CPU is being used hard, like running 3D intensive software. For example I have 3D studio rendering and then I try to open Internet explorer and computer will reboot.
I check my PSU by measuring the voltage (with DMM) on the 5 volt line and causing a reboot during CPU intensive activities. I even unplugged an extra HD and ran my FSB at 100 mhz. I did not notice any voltage drop and the computer still rebooted.
I need to decide to if I want to return the MB, before I go out a buy a PSU and find out it did not fix my problem.
Any ideas.Video Card is a
Video: Compro GeForce3 Ti 200
HD: Maxtor 30GB 7200 RPM ATA100
Power Supply (don't know brand name)
300W, with 150W for both the 3.3 and 5 Volts (at
least according to the label)
The computer also rebooted while trying to run
Nero to copy a CD image to hard drive. So I don't think its video card related. I had this video card in my ABIT KT7 with no problems.

Is FSB overclocking above 175 MHz possible with KT4 Ultra?
I would like to squeeze a few extra MHz out of my AMD XP2600+ (without unlocking or other hardmods that cost money if they fail...). I have upped the FSB to 175 successfully, which gives me just above 2200 MHz CPU speed as reported of Motherboard Monitor. But when I go above that, it crashes. Upping the voltage from auto (1.65 on my system) does not seem to help. A guy on an overclocking board suggested that it's because it stops in the AGP/PCI slot since there is no lock of those speeds. Is this possible in any way, or are there any other dirty tricks to use so I can get more speed out of this?
Thanks a lot in advance!thanks!!!yes, it really seems to be a power source issue...
i am using a powerline 450W power source, and the smart doctor utility form asus reported a reading of red marked warning 3.12 volts intead of 3.3 volts, also i tested the 3.3 rails using a multimeter while the system was on and capture drivers under conflict and it reported a 3.25 voltage.....i opened the power source's box and clean its dust, and so, the problem is not happening anymore!!.anyway smart doctors is reporting a 3.15 voltage instead of 3.3 (not in red or under warning message)and the multimeter is reporting 3.27. but everything is working fine: capture and tv out fetures while using the processor as an athlon 2800+ for the first time since i bought the motherboard........
the 5 volts line is reported by the multimeter with 4.95 volts after and before the problem was happening, same with smart doctor.
the hardware i used was:
-two MSI kt4 ultra boards
-kt4A
-an intel motherboard which i don't remember its brand, using dimm pc 133 memory(using anoter power supply)
-asus v8460 for all boards
-same ddr memory for all msi motherboards
since the voltage is still not 3.3 volts reported, even if the entire video card is working fine, and i only cleaned the box, and didn't change anything to its structure, maybe the problem could happen again, i guess i should buy another power source then.
i am very thankful
Andres.
PD: i see that a lot of people is having this kind of problem through the forum and maybe its due to this voltage stuff too....maybe it'd be a good idea if a sticky thread is posted repoting this stuff i believe. (if it hasn't yet of course) -
Follow up to 1.3 BIOS on KT4 Ultra
Cured my two problems
1) Extra mouse pointer in games
2) Stuttering in games
How?
By going back to BIOS 1.2
Can only assume that BIOS 1.3 was rushed out without sufficient testing. It MAY fix IDE transfer problems, but on my system which is SCSI anyway it introduced the two problems above.
Definately starting to wonder if I should go back to Abit, this is my first MSI board, and probably my last, the way things are going.
KT4 Ultra
XP2600+ 333fsb

SB AudigyBIOS 1.25 is a BETA BIOS, meaning it's unsupported by MSI. AFAIK, it might fix the Optical mouse LED stays ON even PC has powered off.
For those have PS/2 Optical mouse, please test this beta BIOS against this issue.
