Kt4-ultra system fans

ok guys  - was wondering if you could help me out here!
i am on a crusade to make my puter as quiet as a really quiet thing on national quiet day!
already got a nice solid case (lian li 60)
i have removed the via fan and replaced the whining little thing with a zalman northbridge heatsink (no need for fan)
proc fan is fairly quiet (it will do till i get a zalman flower or something similar)
2 front fans are sweet - hardly hear them at all!
ram just has copper heat sinks (again no fan)
insinde of puter - apart from the windowed bit has been sound proofed using akasa foam!
power supply fan is suprisingly quiet (it will do till i can afford a top of the range quiet one anyway)
but now to my problem!!!!
the rear system fan is literally blowing me away - lol
it is supposed to be a low noise all singing all dancing fan but it hasn't made any difference to the case original!
the reason i am posting here is because this new fan has the sensor line and connects to the mobo sfan 1 socket - which i assumed would alter the fan speed according to the temp of the system!
but the fan seems to be running at top whack all the time (now my system is running very cool, almost cold in fact  - when i feel the air being pumped out of the fan it is still about room temp!
is there any sort of set up or progam i need to do/install before the system will start controlling the fan??
or do you have any other advice?

ok i downloaded and installed the latest pcalert 4
this has had no effect in altering fan speed - infact all i can get it to do is beep at me when i set my min temp to 50c - lol
help please someone - there must be a way of setting optimal temp values and the fans adjusting as needed!!
or am i expecting the mobo to do too much?
btw cpu temp is 38c (fan running at 2500)
system at 35c (fan running at 2766)

  • KT4 ULTRA : CPU fan & AGP mode

    Hello,
    I have 2 problems :
1)Each first starting of my computer, there is 6 or 8 rings and it's written :
    CPU fan isn't running?  Y/N
In reality, the fan is running correctly, but it is thermoregulated.
This fan is connected to CFAN1 and I have another fan system in NBFAN1
Do you have a solution for this problem?
    2)In my KT4 MS-6590 V1.0, I have the last VIA Chipset Drivers 4.51 and I have a new graghic card Hercules 3D Prophet 9600SE.
In the Bios, AGP MODE is in AUTO (grey), I can't change.
    In reality, I saw it's AGP*2 or AGP*4, but not *8.
The informations in the Bios AGP Timing Control are :
    AGP MODE : Auto
    AGP Fast write : Enabled
    AGP Aoerture Size : 256MB
    AGP Master 1 W/SWrite : Disabled
    AGP Master 1 W/SRead : Disabled
    AGP Read Synchronization: Disabled
Can you tell me the reason why I can't affect 8 for AGP MODE
    Thanks for your answer

Richard_2003, you are right, in the control panel, it's running at 8x.
OK for the mode "AUTO" in the Bios.
For the fan, it's good like this

  • Kt4 ultra system starting to not boot.

My system the last week will on hitting the power button will not boot up or even show show anything on the monitor.
It keeps bepping three times.   I can turn it off and back on and it seems to boot up most of the times.  Today it would not boot a all so I replaced the battery.  removed, disconnected all hardrives removed all cards. removed memory  and still just the three beeps.   I also reset bios but no help.   I left it on for a few minutes the cut it off and it started ok.
Any ideas what is causing this.

not sure about beeps but the power supply is what I was thinking.  Have been doing electronics all my life and since it seems to go away after the computer is left on it looks like it has to be a connection or component that when cold will not work but once heated it starts working.   Going to see what happens next time it been off over night.  At that time I will remove all the cards at the same time so all I have connected is the motherboard and the cpu and see what happens.   Thanks for the input.  A bad power supply would not surprise me since I have had this computer for years now it has been on a lot.  Will repost when I have more info.

  • KT4 Ultra (6590) - NB Chipset Sensor Fan

The KT4 Ultra have three Fan Power Connectors, how can i read in the manual:
    "Fan Power Connectors: CFAN1/SFAN1/NBFAN1
The CFAN1 (processor fan), SFAN1 (system fan) and NBFAN1
(NorthBridge fan) support system cooling fan with +12V. It supports three pin
    head connector."
The mobo have onboard a Winbond W83697HF sensor chipset.
With every software (PCAlert,Speedfan,Everest) i tried to read sensors statistics (Temp/Fan speed), i can read only two stats.
    I have three fan connected:
1 for the CPU - CFAN1 (i can read Temp and Fan speed)
1 for the system - SFAN1 (i can read Temp and Fan speed)
1 for the NorthBridge - NBFAN1 (provided by the mobo itself and i can't read stats)
The NBFan is working and is three pin capable (three wires).
Every software show only two stats and not three with one all zero.
Now i have to change the fan or simple the mobo don't provide stats for the NB chipset?
someone with the same mobo can read this stats?
    Thanks for every help.

Has it been like this for 5+ years? Probably the sensor is gone or damaged. Don't think so, but it is also possible the fan connection is damaged, so not all three reach the motherboard. (Upside down?)
If you have no problem I wouldn't worry about it. Once you start experiencing problems get a fanless heatsink, from Zalman for example. Think this will fit:

  • KT4 Ultra in multi-zone audio system

If you want to see a MSI KT4 Ultra used in a home theater and multi-zone (whole house) sound system, have a look at this page!  8)

Well I got my DAC today and I'm happy to report that everything is going to work the way I hoped. So here is my setup:
    1. Main zone - ATV connected to Denon 1909 with HDMI for both audio and video.
    2. Zone 2 - ATV connected to DAC using optical audio and DAC connected to Denon using RCA composite.
    3. Dolby digital setting on ATV set to "auto"
When I am watching in the main zone I get 2 channel audio when listening to music and Dolby digital with Netflix or iTunes tv shows.
When music is playing, if I switch on zone 2 the audio plays through my outdoor speakers just fine. My Denon display shows a 2 channel audio input.
If I leave zone 2 on and put some multi channel content on the ATV (like Netflix) the outdoor speakers give off a static feedback sound. This is the one glitch in the setup and was expected since the DAC can't process multi channel sound. But since I never plan to use the outside speakers for anything but music it shouldn't be a problem.
So it appears that the auto setting is not purely based on the capabilities of the HDMI device connected to the ATV but actually the programming that is running at the time. Makes sense.
Think I will keep the ATV 3.

  • KT4 Ultra N/B Fan - prob w/heatsink clips

?( I'm trying to install a North Bridge fan on my new KT4 Ultra.  Can't find any physical installation instructions in the FAQs or Tech Support.
How do I remove the existing spring clips on the North Bridge heatsink?  My N/B fan kit has thermal phase change pads and fan with 3-pin power connector.
I don't want to force the spring clips or stress the mobo.  I need to re-use the existing spring clips to mount the N/B fan.  Should I just pull upward on the clips or try to push them up from the bottom of the mobo?  -- Or is there some "magic grip"???
Sometimes working inside PCs makes me feel uncoordinated .  Despite years of experience, there's always a new "gotcha".  TIA for your suggestions.

remove the board from the pc
on the back squeeze ends of pins together
push and pull as you do and they will pop back
they hold by splaying out behind the board

  • Change speed CPU-fan KT4-ultra

Does anyone know if you can change the speed of the fan on your cpu on the KT4-ultra. I tried everything with software, but nothing helps! Mayby MSI has blocked it?
    Thanks.

You could try adifferent heatsink fan with a variable speed control - I use a coolermaster hac-v81 which has a speed control allowing speeds upto 5000rpm lower than 3000rpm at the bottom end.
I don't know of any mobos that allow you to control fan speed

  • KT4 Ultra (C-Media Sound System

I recently installed The KT4 Ultra and ran the installation
CD. Everything went perfect. It was immediately up and
running. I have since found that I cannot get a CD to play
out of the rear speakers. I have tried with the S-bracket
and without it with the rear speakers plugged into the Line
In. The software has been set accordingly to 4 speakers in
each case. I know it is not the CD rom or the speakers.
Does anyone have any ideas . ALSO sound comes out of all
4  speakers for mp3's, wav files, midi's that are already
on the hard disk. It is just the playing of cd's.
                                            THANKS

It's upto the software to emulate the rear channels since CD is stereo.
Try winamp 2.8 with the output plugin set to direct sound, works every time.

  • Kt4 ultra bios

have a strange paradox regarding disturbing message at boot up.
when i boot my system i recieve a message:
"no drive attached to fast track controller.  no bios detected.."
i love msi boards and have used this forum in past very sucessfully with the assistance of BAS.
I donated my old system to a freind in need.  It was all of 11 months old and was a very stable system built on a k7t pro 2-ru.  It had all the bells and whistles.  what a mistake.
my new system is as follows:
    kt4 ultra fisr
256 mb ddr3200 samsung  (as recommended by msi)
    m-audio revolution 7.1
ati all in one wonder radeon 8500 64mb
2-80gb western digital special edition hard drives
    dvd/cd combo lg electronics  gcc-4320b
    athalon xp 2200
    550 watt antec tru-power psu
lian li case with 4 fans (of which only 3 work with the power supply while allowing fan monitoring)
    klipsch pro-media 5.1 speakers
    winxp pro
how i got there to the afore mentioned msge regarding controller and no bios detected...
I was experiencing a lot of problems with the new set up
    such as:
    1.  system crashes while viewing tv
    2.  unexplained boot up of system in the middle of the
night (that was freaky and kind of humorous)
    3.  other system reboots and difficulty of system
         shutdown
    4.  device driver failure messages regarding the ati card
         such as "atimmc.exe  driver failure"
all system crashes revolved around the ati card and after recoveries many registeries were messed with as expected.
all in all I got by with the system as long as i remained off applications involving the radeon card.
last week I checked into the forum here and noticed issues with this motherboard and radeon cards.
i went to the ati site noticed updated drivers, and at the msi site, updated bios for the kt4 ultra boards.
i did not have a floppy so i backed off flashing the new bios onto the board.  I currently have the first version (1.00 or something), the screen flashes so briefly these days.
i decided to reformat the drives and reload xp onto the new system and then retreive the newer drivers for ati card.  upon installation while reading my neurophysiology book upon boot up is when xp informed me that no bios was detected.   xp asked me if i wanted to continue.  so i did continue with sucessfull installation of xp.
being quite surprised that i could still get system on board, i am wondering how to get the bios to be detected and if I should try and flash new bios, if this will correct this.  I am also with fresh install of xp having no difficulties shutting down system now and i am no longer having mystery unassisted boots of the system.
all in all, before the bios problem i was just wondering about the stability of the board with the ati radeon card.
Now I am very concerned with the message, "no driver attached to fast track controller... no bois detected"
any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
Boy, do i miss that k7t board...
    thank you,
    Eric

Do NOT worry about the fasttrack controller message!!
It just says you don't have any serial-ATA disk attached. This is how to get rid of the message:
    In BIOS:
    => Integrated Peripherals
    => OnBoard PCI Controller
=> Serial ATA ---> set this to "Disabled"
Can't say I experience any of your other problems, although I had some problems with the sound card the first time I installed.
Seems as if the problems are fewer the more times you install/format the system.....actually experienced that on a couple of MSI-cards. In the end, everything has worked fine for me, so I'm happy with them (except design and layout of the new nForce K7N2G-cards!! ridiculous!)

  • New KT4 Ultra Won't boot

Still looking for an answer to my boot up problem.  Computer starts and the lights on the dbracket stop at the first green light.  I get no video, keyboard or mouse and I have to use the power supply switch to turn it off.  I assembled the board with no problems. Rule out the stupid stuff like plugging stuff in with power on the board or misinstalling the cooling fan. I followed the instructions carefully.  Did I break this thing, or should I buy a new power supply X(  and try again?  It would have been nice if the manual said something about the power supply so I could have planned that into my system.  I really thought 300 watts was enough...  it worked fine on my Shuttle system.  If you have a recommended power supply in the $30-40 range, please let me know the make/model so I can go shopping.
I would greatly appreciate any help that will keep me from having to spend hours on the phone with the MSI Tech Support help desk.
    KT4 Ultra MS 6590, Athlon 2200+, Kingston 512M 333 PC2700; 2 EIDE 7200 RPM HDD's running Win 2K Prof;2 EIDE CDROM's; Nvidia Riva TNT M64;Realtek PCI 10/100 Lan (RJ45) Antec Model PP 303x 300W PSU(3.3/14A;5/30A;12/10A Peak 160W)

I had this problem when I first got my KT4 Ultra and it was either one of two things I did and it works fine now.
Make sure that you don't have more of those spacers that seperates your MB from your case. There should only be like 6 that you need to put on. Any more than what you have screw holes for up top and you're potentially shorting out the board to the case. Luckily I didn't cause any damage and as soon as I put only the necessary spacers in, I had full boot up.
Another possibility is that your jumper pin that is used to clear the CMOS is in the wrong position. I contacted MSI tech support before and pointed out that what was shown in the diagram as the correct jumper position was different than what is said in the instructions. This caused me some confusion and luckily again, it didn't cause any damage.
Hopefully someone else will chime in on my response to your problem and either back me up or disprove it but it couldn't hurt to double check those things I've pointed out.

  • KT4 Ultra & ATI 9700 & Black screen HELP

    Hi guys,
After first uninstalling the Nvidia drivers and then powering down and removing the Geforce 4 card, I installed a brand new ATI 9700 that I got from Mwave.com for $199.00. When I turn on the power all I get is a black screen - I can't see anything on the screen but I can see my computer trying to post by watching the lights on the drives and observing the D-Bracket.
The D-Bracket is indicating a system hang on "Testing base memory from 240k to 640k and extending memory above 1MB using various patterns". Led's 1&3 red and 2&4 green.
I did hook up the 12 volt adapter that came with the the board at two different locations just to make sure there was not a problem with power. I also checked for the presence of voltage at the adapter right at the card with a volt meter (12.3 volts). I also swapped the power connector from the floppy to the video card. The cooling fan on the card is coming on. I made sure the power connector was connected prior to powering up my system. I also tried clearing NVRAM. What is wrong??? Any ideas out there?  Do I have a bad card right out of the box ???
For now I had put my Geforce4 Ti 4200 back in so I can use my computer again.
    My current system & settings:
    Antec case, 400w P/S +3.3/28amps +5/40amps +12/18amps

for one try removing one of your memory sticks,,try that first,,,make sure your fsb of the cpu and the memory are 166,,,,it will auto detect the 8x agp if the card suports it,,,,,,do you have the card setted all the wat,,,,,,,,,,double check memory settings,,this card i have found does not like fsb messed with or the memory fsb messed with.....set memory to spd,,,,good luck

  • MSI KT4 ULTRA BSR QUESTIONS

I just bought new stuff for my computer
     kt4 Ultra bsr
     AOPEN Geforce ti4200 128mb DVI
2200 XP CPU (IN A BOX)
     256 ddram 333mhz
so i began rebuilding my computer,
first thing i did was moving the CLEAR CMOS to the right position (by the manual) then it wouldn´t boot, no lights, no fan movement, so i found out later  on the internet that it was wrong, so i put the jumper in the other position as shown in the internet.
But when i start up the computer now it only shows
    1500 XP 1350 mhz, should be 2200 xp - 1800mhz i think.
but it won´t start with the fsb at 133 mhz. what can i do ????
    i have calculated the 5v * 30a + 3.3v * 14 = 196w (dont know what that mean hehe)
i just dont know what´s wrong huff plz anyone help ?

    Hi,
unable to run FSB at 133Mhz is either two problem or both:
    1. CPU Heatsink did not install properly, thermal grease applied wrongly
    2. Power supply does not have enough power
    Check both of them.
Your power supply is very weak for today's system. Please consider an upgrade. But don't blindly go for the bigger numbers -- 450W, 550W, survey more to know about the quality of the power supply, especially the +3.3V and +5V rails, which both should supply similar amount of current, ie +3.3V @ 35A, +5V @ 36A for a good 400W. For more insurance, go for the well known brand. But usually they cost more.

    2. USBUHCI.SYS BSOD's when installing software.
    3. I/O errors when installing from cd's / copying large files.
    4. CRC errors when installing from cd's / copying from large files.
    5. "Corrupt Media", "Corrupt Installation Files"  when installing cd's.

I have posted on ViaArena as well and there are a more people there with the same or similar problems.
    Regards
    Rob

    Hi gruberstuber,
It sounds horribly like you're IBM Deskstar may be living up to it's more threatening nickname of DeathStar. These HDDs have a pretty awful history for reliability and from the symptoms you describe, I would be feeling pretty nervous about continuing with it.
Do you have access to another known good HDD at all, preferably from Western Digital or Maxtor? If you do, it would be worth substituting your IBM for one of these and giving that a go. Might work wonders.
It's not as likely, but it's possible that your PSU is rated slightly to small for the Graphics Card you're using. The GF4 4600 is notoriously power hungry and it is possible that this could be drawing your main voltages down to below -5% of the nominal voltage, this can cause you all sorts of weird problems. As a guide, you can't really tell if a PSU is holding up OK under load conditions by checking the voltages when the system is unloaded, all PSU's will give you terrific voltages in that situation.
I would go up to at least a 400W good quality PSU from either Antec or Enermax to be absolutely sure that the GF4 4600 is being catered for.
    All the best,
    Dimal.

  • KT4 Ultra FISR and Volcano 9 Cool Mod

I am building a system using the KT4 Ultra FISR and a 2800+.  I am also using the Thermaltake Volcano 9 Coolmod fan which has LEDs on the fan.  My question is this, the board has two sets of Power LED headers, a two pin and a three pin.  The Coolmod is supposed to plug in to the Power LED header.  Is it possible to use the three pin header for the fan and the two pin header for the case?  I don't want to lose the front LED.  I know Thermaltake says don't wire both front panel and Coolmod to the same header, but it doesn't say anything about two different headers.  If someone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.  I hope I made myself clear.    Thanks in advance.

Do you mean to use the two pin JFP1 Power LED for the case and the 3 pin JFP2 for the Volcano mod? I dont think it should be a problem, my LED's are mixed and matched between the two headers.  You could test it with a multimeter to see what the output of one header is while the other is connected to its LED.
