KT4 Ultra w/XP2400+

I snagged the Beta BIOS (1.25) off the message board yesterday and it fixed my problem with the FSB trying to go to 133Mhz.
Before, using 1.1 BIOS, I could only get to 133Mhz by going 1Mhz at a time (read that tip from a message board somewhere).  Now, I can go straight to 133Mhz from the default 100Mhz.  I now have a 'normal' XP2400+ system.
Now I can experiment with BIOS settings without having to fear locking the system and starting back @ 100Mhz...101Mhz...102Mhz...
I've heard a lot of people complaining that when they try to go to 133Mhz FSB their system won't POST, black screen, etc....Try this BIOS and see if it helps!

i would divide 2000 by 166 and go lower to start
read the sticky as manual has clear cmos jumper wrong and you may need it

  • KT4 Ultra-BSR multipler & CPU volts on XP2400 dont work!

Well after several atempts and clearing the cmos several times the multipler dosnt work on XP2400 and when you go to change the cpu voltage from auto it comes up with strange symbols not a voltage to select! so iam stuck at 141fsb and CPU voltage set to auto i can change the FSB only except lower or to 141, why is it asus and epox can change the multipler and we cant on our MSI KT4 Ultra, iam disapointed and who wouldnt be after all others can change there multipler!
any surgestions would be welcome and i think MSI should address this problem with a bios update and also look at the voltages for CPU as symbols mean nothing to me! ?(

Oops, I meant how did you connect the module to the motherboard??  I can't find anyway in which to connect it directly into the mobo, and I didn't get a cable with mine.  (I still haven't got to the software side of it yet - the hardware has been my prob for the past few weeks, no-one seems to be able to answer me).
Hope you can tell me how to do it (pref with some pics or something coz I'm starting to think my retailer sent me the wrong board).

    Hi,
I have the same issues with my KT4 Ultra (pure version).
Running GF4 Ti4400, Athlon XP2400+ etc, 450W power etc. There are quite many posts of similar issues all over the Via Arena forums and some here as well. KT4 Ultra's and KT4V's seem to be the boards affected.
Installing the Via USB Filter Patch helped with narrowing down the number of crashes and some of the errors.
(note: disable automatic restart from 'Startup and Recovery settings' to see the driver that crashes)
Link to Via Arena FTP site
I had a K7T266pro2-RU board before this which worked 100% stable. I've tested all my components which are fine. Tested different power supplies, memory. Still, continuous random errors after many times of reinstalling Win2K by the book and with default bios settings.
Sometimes the setup works fine for a week and then starts to mess around again.
Looks like setting the cpu fsb down to 128 MHz from 133 MHz solves the issues, so try that and report back.
    Also check the filter patch.
I'm personally waiting for the next bios release to fix these issues - if not, I'm showing this board RMA and go to nForce2 chipset.
I also tested the 1.25 beta bios, which gave me lots of crashes during Win2K boot -> flashed back to v1.10 and booting works again.

  • Still Cannot do anything on this board(KT4 Ultra)

So in the beginning I bought this new system, here are the specs:
    (Original Specs)
    MB: MSI KT4 Ultra
    CPU: AMD XP 2200+
    RAM1: 512MB PC2700
    RAM2: 512MB PC2700
    AGP: Nvidia Ti4200 128MB
    PCI(All):Empty
    IDE1: 80gig Western Digital
    IDE2: literon 16x DVD
    PSU: 300W
    (cant think of anything else)
So when i got it home, I could not Install Win2K AT ALL, No matter what i did or tried still would not install.
So after awhile i said forget it and install WinXP, worked installed fine(or so i thought).  I installed SP1, d/l all the updates. d/l VIA 4.45 and for the graphics card i d.l the latest certified drivers. Well i thought i was in the clear, but then i started getting errors or problems while trying to run games or 3D apps(cinema4D). So i went through all the forums and ended up replacing the PSU witha Antec true power 480, and the CPU cooler with a volcano 9. but still nothing but problems so i took it back to my dealer and they deemed the mobo bad or something and gave us a new one.took it home and still Errors, did a fresh install of winxp(win2k could still not install)Still erros everywhere. so i took back to them again. and they claimed this time that the cpu cooler was to big and wasent makeing full contact, and gave us a smaller one(i think a volcano7?) i was like alright that is understandable. got it home did fresh install AND STILL Errors.
I dont know what to do, lets see i cant run 3Dmark2001SE program just quits no error. Quake3 quits,Cinema4D says it has generaded errors and needs to quit. at first PCMark2002 did not work, But i was runnin a test on my harddrives and C: would keep failing, so i looked in one of the logs and said something about memory, so i changed my swap file to D: and boom PCmark2002 went all the way trough its tests, and i could do tests on my c and d without any errors but i still can use 3d apps?
    Any ideas please
    Thanks in advanced

"......so i took back to them again. and they claimed this time that the cpu cooler was to big and wasent makeing full contact, and gave us a smaller one(i think a volcano7?)....."
    THATS SO NOT TRUE ?
Volcano 9+ was a nice copper base, and it makes great contact with the cpu core
Man i built a simliar PC for a friend:
    MSI KT4-Ultra (bios version 1.3)
    Athlon XP2400+ FSB266 Retail Box

    CNET 10/100 NIC
    Windows XP Pro SP1 /Via 4.45

maybe, it can be your memory, thats my guess
or could be you setting AGP8x?

Hello All, I have a problem, I have a KT4 Ultra, xp2400+, 512mb Corsair xms3200cas2, leadtek gforce4 4400, sb audigy, antec 550 watt pure pwr psu, I am not able to run the memory at 333 cas 2 stable, keeps crashing, forget 400 mhz altogether, also could not get to work on an asus A7V333 at all, I have tried 2 CPU's and 2 memory sticks with the same result. Any Ideas?

my kt4 runs ok with xms3200c2 although i did just buy another stick from http://www.scan.co.uk advertised as cas2 ,it had no corsair stickers so i used aida32 / astra to identify it ,it was not cas2 it was just xms3200 ( older stock) ...also you may wanna try the corsair forum ,supported by corsair themselfs ...very helpful

  • KT4 ULTRA SHUTDOWN

    I have a kt4 ultra with 2 modules 256 ram pc2700 (333Mhz) (512Mb total), Athlon XP 2200+, maxtor 7200rpm 80gb harddrive 2 partitions (W98 & WXP), palit daytona geforce4 mx440 agp 8x 64mb ddr ram, bios rev 1.4, 500W psu with inside cooler.
(My +5 voltage is currenyly 4,7 from pcalert)
    (My Vcore is 1,65 pcalert)
    (Cpu 50 C system 49 C) Original Athlon cooler
    (Fsb 133)
    All with the latest drivers.
    DX 8,1.
    And I have two problems
The computer shuts down unexpectedly and does not start again until some time or a little of insist over the reset and power buttons. For example I´m in WXP and I click Start menu and instantly It shuts down. Also when clicking control panel from the start menu it happens the same. Sometimes it shuts down even before entering windows. I Changed the ram from the two modules just to work with one module, aned it works ok sometimes, but others it is the same problem. I put on the other module in the same slot and it hanged again, so I changed to the supposed good module and shutted down again!!. A thing to have in mind is that the ram is spectek brand, i understand these are not good but cheap memory. someone offered me some ram of the simple technology brand, life guaranteed, but these were a lot expensive. maybe this is bugging?
Other is thast the meinboard does not recognize the video card as 8x, just to 4x.
If someone knows about this, the help would be very appreciated.

What brand of PSU do you have? I tried a 550W Q-Tec with a XP2400.....and it couldnt reach 133FSB... Try using a different PSU, yet still at 400W or so.

  • Help... KT4 Ultra

    Hi,
    I Have the KT4 ultra + AMD XP 2400+ (FSB 266)
    My questions :
    1) Why I can't change the CPU cpu multiplier from "AUTO" to manual "15X".
If I change anything but "AUTO" the system hangs.. Is it normal?
    2) I wold like to understand how to overclock an unlocked XP2400+(133x15) to (12x166) if the multiplier desn't work...
    Thanks..

    To answer your questions
    1) Why I can't change the CPU cpu multiplier from "AUTO" to manual "15X".
If I change anything but "AUTO" the system hangs.. Is it normal?
Yes, it is normal because your CPU is locked and you can't change the multiplier without doing some bridge unlocking.
    2) I wold like to understand how to overclock an unlocked XP2400+(133x15) to (12x166) if the multiplier desn't work...
If it does not work, then it's possible that your cpu is not unlocked properly.  TBred's are not unlocked the same way as Palomino chips (XP 2000+ and lower speeds).

  • Problem with my MSI KT4 Ultra

    Hi all!
I have a BIG problem, I have tried to look at this board, but there is many different answers out there  ;(
I have KT4 Ultra with Athlon XP 2600+
I have set FSB to 166, and when I startup BIOS says Athlon XP 2600+.
But in windows system, it only says:
    AMD Athlon XP2600+
    2.09Ghz !!!!
    768Mb RAM
Why is windows only says 2.09Ghz??
AND, I think my system is very slow. I used to have AMD 1200Mhz. And this sytem is almost like my last computer.

  • Follow up to 1.3 BIOS on KT4 Ultra

    Cured my two problems
    1) Extra mouse pointer in games
    2) Stuttering in games
    How?
By going back to BIOS 1.2
Can only assume that BIOS 1.3 was rushed out without sufficient testing. It MAY fix IDE transfer problems, but on my system which is SCSI anyway it introduced the two problems above.
Definately starting to wonder if I should go back to Abit, this is my first MSI board, and probably my last, the way things are going.
    KT4 Ultra
    XP2600+ 333fsb
512mb Corsair XMS DDR 400 running at 333
    Adaptec U160 SCSI
    SB Audigy

BIOS 1.25 is a BETA BIOS, meaning it's unsupported by MSI. AFAIK, it might fix the Optical mouse LED stays ON even PC has powered off.
For those have PS/2 Optical mouse, please test this beta BIOS against this issue.

I have done fdisk, Partition Magic format, windows install format, and format but I keep get this error. I thought that it was was the hard drive but I try install XP on my ASUS K7V mobo and it work without a prob.
The reason I reinstall is to turn off the APIC and APCI so I can stop the infinite loop error I been getting. I have restore the default setting and still doesn't work.

  • Kt4 ultra bios

have a strange paradox regarding disturbing message at boot up.
when i boot my system i recieve a message:
"no drive attached to fast track controller.  no bios detected.."
i love msi boards and have used this forum in past very sucessfully with the assistance of BAS.
I donated my old system to a freind in need.  It was all of 11 months old and was a very stable system built on a k7t pro 2-ru.  It had all the bells and whistles.  what a mistake.
my new system is as follows:
    kt4 ultra fisr
256 mb ddr3200 samsung  (as recommended by msi)
    m-audio revolution 7.1
ati all in one wonder radeon 8500 64mb
2-80gb western digital special edition hard drives
    dvd/cd combo lg electronics  gcc-4320b
    athalon xp 2200
    550 watt antec tru-power psu
lian li case with 4 fans (of which only 3 work with the power supply while allowing fan monitoring)
    klipsch pro-media 5.1 speakers
    winxp pro
how i got there to the afore mentioned msge regarding controller and no bios detected...
I was experiencing a lot of problems with the new set up
    such as:
    1.  system crashes while viewing tv
    2.  unexplained boot up of system in the middle of the
night (that was freaky and kind of humorous)
    3.  other system reboots and difficulty of system
         shutdown
    4.  device driver failure messages regarding the ati card
         such as "atimmc.exe  driver failure"
all system crashes revolved around the ati card and after recoveries many registeries were messed with as expected.
all in all I got by with the system as long as i remained off applications involving the radeon card.
last week I checked into the forum here and noticed issues with this motherboard and radeon cards.
i went to the ati site noticed updated drivers, and at the msi site, updated bios for the kt4 ultra boards.
i did not have a floppy so i backed off flashing the new bios onto the board.  I currently have the first version (1.00 or something), the screen flashes so briefly these days.
i decided to reformat the drives and reload xp onto the new system and then retreive the newer drivers for ati card.  upon installation while reading my neurophysiology book upon boot up is when xp informed me that no bios was detected.   xp asked me if i wanted to continue.  so i did continue with sucessfull installation of xp.
being quite surprised that i could still get system on board, i am wondering how to get the bios to be detected and if I should try and flash new bios, if this will correct this.  I am also with fresh install of xp having no difficulties shutting down system now and i am no longer having mystery unassisted boots of the system.
all in all, before the bios problem i was just wondering about the stability of the board with the ati radeon card.
Now I am very concerned with the message, "no driver attached to fast track controller... no bois detected"
any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
Boy, do i miss that k7t board...
    thank you,
    Eric

Do NOT worry about the fasttrack controller message!!
It just says you don't have any serial-ATA disk attached. This is how to get rid of the message:
    In BIOS:
    => Integrated Peripherals
    => OnBoard PCI Controller
=> Serial ATA ---> set this to "Disabled"
Can't say I experience any of your other problems, although I had some problems with the sound card the first time I installed.
Seems as if the problems are fewer the more times you install/format the system.....actually experienced that on a couple of MSI-cards. In the end, everything has worked fine for me, so I'm happy with them (except design and layout of the new nForce K7N2G-cards!! ridiculous!)

  • No optical-out sound on MSI KT4-Ultra!!

Hi, I have recently set up a system based on the MSI KT4-Ultra board. I'm using an Athlon XP 1700+, a Radeon 9000 video card, and I've installed Windows 98.
Although all the drivers and audio applications which MSI provided installed fine, and 2-channel audio from the on-board sound chip works great both for music and for the 3-4 games I've installed so far, I can't seem to get the optical SPDIF port to work! I bought a cable and connected the computer to my Sony MD-player and attempted to copy my CDs onto MD. I go into the MSI control panel and check the box to enable SPDIF-out, removing the speaker cable from the analog line-out just for good measure. When I plug the optical cable into my MD it recognises digital input and prepares for recording. I press record on the MD and play on the computer's CD-player app, but the MD LED shows "no signal". I'm pretty sure both the MD recorder and cable are OK since I've used them to copy CDs from a Kenwood portable CD-player quite recently, so it must be the MB that's giving me problems. Indeed, when I've stopped playback in the CD-player app and went back into the audio control panel, I found that the SPDIF box had been unchecked of its own accord. I've tried this several times, and I've unplugged the S-bracket and reinstalled it all over again just to make sure it was plugged in properly, and I still get the same problem. All audio works fine except optical out! Haven't got a coaxial cable or recorder so I can't check if the coaxial port is equally buggered or if it's just the optical, but I'm getting really annoyed here: this was the one feature I liked best about this board and the only one which isn't working! Any ideas, anyone?

dude, i think i can get u ur signal, but currently i can only get silent recordings, u may have better luck.
on the minidisc, there should be a switch or button that will toggle synchronised recording on and off, turning it off should get u a signal, but it wont be in sync wiv the cd, ie u cant trust it to form track gaps.
hope that helps, done flame me if it dont, if i manage to get substance to my recording, i will send u the info just in case.
    take it easy

  • KT4 Ultra FISR Updated Bios Still Reboots

I bought a KT4 Ultra last week.  I hooked up everything needed to install my OS (Video and Hard Drive) to install Windows 2000.  It took me a while to get a good install because it would crash in the middle of Win2K setup.  After reading the posts on the subject I upgraded the Bios to 1.3.  I no longer had problems with installing software of transferring large files between CD and HD.  Although a bit slow, it worked.
But now I have another problem.   The computer reboots when the CPU is being used hard, like running 3D intensive software.  For example I have 3D studio rendering and then I try to open Internet explorer and computer will reboot.
I check my PSU by measuring the voltage (with DMM) on the 5 volt line and causing a reboot during CPU intensive activities.  I even unplugged an extra HD and ran my FSB at 100 mhz.  I did not notice any voltage drop and the computer still rebooted.
I need to decide to if I want to return the MB, before I go out a buy a PSU and find out it did not fix my problem.
    Any ideas.

    Video Card is a
    Video: Compro GeForce3 Ti 200
    HD: Maxtor 30GB 7200 RPM ATA100
Power Supply (don't know brand name)
300W, with 150W for both the 3.3 and 5 Volts (at
    least according to the label)
The computer also rebooted while trying to run
Nero to copy a CD image to hard drive.  So I don't think its video card related.  I had this video card in my ABIT KT7 with no problems.
