KT4 Ultra won't boot if I change settings in BIOS

I can't change any cmos settings either. If I change anything in the bios at all it won't boot. it will turn on but won't boot. so I have to clear the cmos to get into windows and my 2500+ Barton is running at 1050mhz because I can't set the fsb to 166(333) like I should be able to. And I just bought the chip yesterday.

Well, its not yet conclusive that your BIOS is bad, all we are saying at this stage is that with a new CPU, you can change settings but it will not Boot. Correct?
When you update a BIOS you only do not always change all the data stored in the memory.
I have, before now, resorted to to using the emergency recovery feature of the BIOS that is well documented.
This way, subject to the memory not having any bad addresses, you completely re-program the BIOS I.C.
Have you tried  BIGRHINO suggestion first?

  • New KT4 Ultra Won't boot

Still looking for an answer to my boot up problem.  Computer starts and the lights on the dbracket stop at the first green light.  I get no video, keyboard or mouse and I have to use the power supply switch to turn it off.  I assembled the board with no problems. Rule out the stupid stuff like plugging stuff in with power on the board or misinstalling the cooling fan. I followed the instructions carefully.  Did I break this thing, or should I buy a new power supply X(  and try again?  It would have been nice if the manual said something about the power supply so I could have planned that into my system.  I really thought 300 watts was enough...  it worked fine on my Shuttle system.  If you have a recommended power supply in the $30-40 range, please let me know the make/model so I can go shopping.
I would greatly appreciate any help that will keep me from having to spend hours on the phone with the MSI Tech Support help desk.

I had this problem when I first got my KT4 Ultra and it was either one of two things I did and it works fine now.
Make sure that you don't have more of those spacers that seperates your MB from your case. There should only be like 6 that you need to put on. Any more than what you have screw holes for up top and you're potentially shorting out the board to the case. Luckily I didn't cause any damage and as soon as I put only the necessary spacers in, I had full boot up.
Another possibility is that your jumper pin that is used to clear the CMOS is in the wrong position. I contacted MSI tech support before and pointed out that what was shown in the diagram as the correct jumper position was different than what is said in the instructions. This caused me some confusion and luckily again, it didn't cause any damage.
Hopefully someone else will chime in on my response to your problem and either back me up or disprove it but it couldn't hurt to double check those things I've pointed out.

  • KT4 Ultra won't post.

KT4 Ultra won't give any output to monitor. Tried swapping video cards (AGP), monitors. Fans spin on the video card. Getting LED's on my NIC, so I have power in the PCI's. Hard drive and CD-ROM spins, and system fan comes on. Have yet to clear CMOS, but I'm doubting (also hoping)  that will fix it. No internal speaker, otherwise I'm sure I would be getting beeps. Never flashed BIOS, no recent updates to hardware/software within past two months. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Tried switching the video card already, and I also tried a different monitor as well. I've tested everything else out and I've narrowed it down to the mobo. PSU is fine, and I have since cleared the CMOS as well, but to no avail. I have never flashed the BIOS, and no changes were made in the BIOS before this happened (at least for two months, that's when I added my DVD-ROM.) CPU is fine and when it was up and running, it was around 53 C under a full load. Thanks for the suggestions, though.

  • KT4 Ultra reboot before booting

Ok, this is going to be long, but I'm hoping one of the details will give somebody a clue.  I'm going to stick in details I don't think are relevant even.
The components relevent to this story:
    KT4 Ultra Motherboard
    Addtronics 300W power supply
    Athlon XP 2400+ cpu
    Windows XP SP1
2 seagate 120gig SATA drive in a mirrored RAID config
    A cheap off brand UPS.
This machine had been up and running about 9-10 months on the current install.  The machine was ROCK solid.  I ran this machine 24/7 with reboots only for getting rid of adware or stuff like that.  Never did I see a blue screen or any bad behaivor.  And I never even bothered to cycle the power during this time.  Sounds good right?
Well I'm doing some work on the carpeting in my office, so I shut it down and moved the machine to a different room.  Well I got everything plugged in and powered it up, and to my surprise it started doing a chkdsk (the in boot chkdsk) since it wanted to, I let it go.  Well as I watched I could see tons of errors coming as I'm watching this many of the files where clusters were being repaired were in the Windows/system32 directory.  So I'm thinking to myself I'm screwed (which is true), as I see the names of vital system files going by.
So after completion it automatically reboots (chkdsk forced it), so I get to the screen where the login should be, but no press ctrl alt del to begin message but instead I get a box saying a service (lssas i think) specified invalid parameters.  I click ok, and I having nothing but a solid blue screen.  I press ctrl alt del and nothing, so I reboot again.  This time I get the same error, but I also get the ctrl alt del to begin message, and I press, I then enter my login message.  It does stuff for a second and then reboots.
So now I let it reboot again, and during the reboot it powers down.  I was confused by this.  I pressed the power switch, and I could see the power, hd leds blink for a sec and then blink off and the PS doesn't even start.  So I press again a few times and get nothing.  I leave it alone for awhile, come back and it powers up again.  Same error, same login attempt, same power down.
I grab my laptop from the otherroom and plug it in to the same wall socket (directly not through the UPS) that my UPS is plugged into.  At that instant, it goes in to power save mode (too quick to be normal power saving), so I quick unplug it, and plug it into the ups.  As I plug it in, it it comes out of power save and operates normally (that's what I'm working with).  So I'm thinking something is wrong with the power outlet (I will pursue that tomorrow), so I go and grab one of those indoor/outdoor orange heavy duty extension cords and plug everything into a different room, and all seems to be working fine.
So at this point i try my computer again, same thing.  I decide its time to repair the winxp install, so I boot off of the XP cd and load the RAID drivers.  Right at the screen where it says R to repair, something to install, something to exit, I choose repair, and it immediatly powers down.  I did it again, and this time it powers down a second after this screen comes up.
So this is where I am now.  I think I had bad power or something, and I now suspect that the PS or the motherboard might be bad.  But since it really consisently powers down at the same point, im confused as to what the problem is.
    Anybody have help to offer?

It may not be a virus but when you said Lsass
    It may be the PSU.

  • OS X Won't boot after permissions change

After setting up my new iMac, I used Migration Assistant to transfer the account, apps and files from my old Macbook Pro over. All seemed well, apart from every time I wanted to move or replace a file in Applications, I had to enter my password. So thinking it was a read/write permissions issue, I right-clicked on Macintosh HD, clicked Get Info, and then set permissions to read/write for my account to all sub folders.
It took a while to do this, and then sprung up with a load of driver errors. So I restarted, and now it won't boot. It just hangs on the white "Apple" screen.
Any suggestions? Annoyingly I don't have my OS X install disc to hand so I can't even boot from CD and try a permissions repair. I might have to buy another OS X install CD, will be less hassle than going home to get the original

Reinstall the OS from the install disc as described in the Everything Mac booklet and follow the steps in Best Practices, ensuring that you let the *setup assistant* do the migration on first boot. That will eliminate the permissions issues you encountered by creating a new admin user and then migrating using the Migration Assistant. Once that's finished, reinstall the other stuff that came with the new machine.

  • Thinkcentre M57 dead after changing settings in BIOS

    Hello,
I have am M57 tower that has been running great for many years but now all of a sudden after changing a few settings in BIOS (I did not upgrade the bios) all I can get the machine to do is power cycle over and over again with fans at full speed. I attempted the steps here http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/A-M-and-Edge-Series-ThinkCentre/M57-BIOS-Update-Failure/td-p/55840 but no luck. I did not change any hardware recently. I have also removed the descrete video card in it but there is no difference. When I attempt to recover the BIOS via a usb desette drive it beeps once then reads the disk for about 5 to 10 seconds with the fans at full speed. Any help would be appreshiated. I never knew you could brick a system by changing settings.

Odd that you followed procedure and that still didn't do it. Change the coin battery on the motherboard, restart pressing F1. Once into the BIOs with a new battery installed, go to the last page and select Load Default Settings, and then select F10 to Save Changes and exit. If all this was caused by a weak battery, this should fix it.
You can find coin batteries (CR2032) at Home Depot or even Walmart.

  • RS480M2 won't boot after certain changes

I tried to change few things in the BIOS after buying a DDR 400MHz RAM, because modules refused to work in 400MHz mode in dual-channel. Now, system refuses to boot. I mean, it switches on, but that's it. Nothing else happens. I changed the Memclock Index Value to 250MHz and left the CAS# Latency(Tcl) to 2.5 (or 3.0 I don't remember properly). The manual says that 3.0 gives the best performance. There is one more thing which I changed. The GFX clock mode. I changed it to Async mode, from Sync. This might be the main cause. I thought that I had fried my RAM modules, but I checked it over at my friend's place and it's fine. Resetting the CMOS jumper to clear the data hasn't helped. Removed the battery to see if it clears the data, that didn't help either. The settings are not falling back to defaults, now what do I do??? It's really urgent! Lot of work pending. I know I did something foolish, but please help me out guys!

No, don't think so. seems they didn't play nice together.. Use 2x matched sticks, also make sure that they will be at least PC3200(400Mhz).

  • KT4-ULTRA Doesn't boot!

Im having a strange problem with the kt4.  It doesn't boot the first time i turn the computer on for the day.  It starts up, all the fans etc.  but nothing happens.  If i hit the reset button, it will then start and give the options to start in safe mode etc....  After that, it will boot everytime from a cold boot.  Any ideas why it would do this one time a day?  Thanks for the help.  d.

    Hi StriFe,
Sounds like it might be a good idea to strip the system back to bare-bones and start again from scratch, very carefully and methodically. Make sure you observe good Anti-Static procedures before touching anything inside the case, etc.
Once everything is stripped out, reset the CMOS via the m'board Jumper and follow the instructions desribed in the m'board manual to avoid mishaps. Once this is done and the Jumper is returned to it's original position, you can start rebuilding the computer, one step at a time and checking for acceptable behaviour after each step by starting the computer and observe the D-Leds and the D-Led troubleshooting table.
By doing it this way, you will hopefully be able to identify the cause of the problem and then go from there. As a general rule, the BIOS settings should be left at their default settings until such time as everything is working properly. After that, if a bit of tweaking is on the agenda, do this on one thing at a time and at one step at a time, rebooting your computer after each single adjustment until such time as you achieve the level of tweaking you are after, or until the computer will no longer operate reliably, in which case you should revert back to a setting that is Two steps back from where you ended up. This should then give you sufficient margin of safety for the computer to run reliably.
Hope this helps. All the best
    Dimal.

  • [Athlon64] sytem wont start after i change settings in bios

hi i have had this wierd problem with my system for a while know and the problem is this:
when i change agp apaterur size or change the ddr voltage in bios the system wont start so i have to nullifie the bios to make the system go up again.
the system works just fine otherwise.
it is really anoying and wierd so i would really appreciate if i could get some help with this one.
    thx

Some cards won't work with some voltages or apatures no matter what you do. Basically just reset the Bios with the jumper and only do so when the machine is unplugged or you can damage it. Reset the Bios and set to a known working setup on the apature. Leave the voltage be unless you know what you are about as that can fry a vid card or damage other parts if it is set wrong.

  • Kt4 ultra problem

hello! i am having a problem with my kt4 ultra.
it originally booted, but once i hit delete to go into setup everything crashed. now when i boot, i get 2 beeps followed by another 8 beeps.
i've done alot of browsing through these forums and other sites, and heres what i find over and over:
    10 Short
     CMOS register
Check the motherboard and remove all expansion cards and replace one at a time.
i've done this and there is still a problem. am i doing the wrong diagnostics for the 2-8 beep combo?

i cleared cmos by removing battery and via the jumper method. no go.
the cpu/mobo/ram/video/ethernet were in another computer and worked previously. i sold them to my friend and had him buy a new case - i got everything setup the first time, booted, hit del to go into bios to make sure all settings were correct. it crashed and now does the 2-8 combo beep.
previously the mobo was in another case and we used different ram, but i still get the 2-8 beep combo using that same ram.
    spec are:

  • KT4 Ultra & ATI 9700 & Black screen HELP

    Hi guys,
After first uninstalling the Nvidia drivers and then powering down and removing the Geforce 4 card, I installed a brand new ATI 9700 that I got from Mwave.com for $199.00. When I turn on the power all I get is a black screen - I can't see anything on the screen but I can see my computer trying to post by watching the lights on the drives and observing the D-Bracket.
The D-Bracket is indicating a system hang on "Testing base memory from 240k to 640k and extending memory above 1MB using various patterns". Led's 1&3 red and 2&4 green.
I did hook up the 12 volt adapter that came with the the board at two different locations just to make sure there was not a problem with power. I also checked for the presence of voltage at the adapter right at the card with a volt meter (12.3 volts). I also swapped the power connector from the floppy to the video card. The cooling fan on the card is coming on. I made sure the power connector was connected prior to powering up my system. I also tried clearing NVRAM. What is wrong??? Any ideas out there?  Do I have a bad card right out of the box ???
For now I had put my Geforce4 Ti 4200 back in so I can use my computer again.

  • IBM R52 Thinkpad won't boot

After successfully imaging an IBM R52 laptop (with SATA drive) it won't
    boot into Win2k.
We are using ZFD v4.01 on NW 6.5, and this is from the bootCD.iso. At
first I was thinking this was a problem with the SATA drive, however, I
soon remembered that we are imaging and booting the IBM 8183 desktop which
also has a SATA drive, and it's working perfectly fine. The R52 thinkpad,
on the other hand, gives no errors and accepts the image just fine.....it
just won't boot. It gets past the BIOS, and then just sits at a
black/blank screen, like it's trying to find the boot partition but it
can't. If I manually reinstall just a blank Win2k OS on it and reboot,
everything is fine. However, as soon as I image it up, and then image it
back down, it messes up the boot partition again and won't boot.
ZEN Imaging is working perfectly fine on our other IBM devices we have in
    house: IBM R40, R41, R50, R51, A30, A30p, A31, A22, T20, 8183, 8171,
6792.....etc. It's just this one particular model we just got in. I've
checked the hard drive using fdisk, and everything looks fine. Just 1
    single, bootable partition.
    Any suggestions?

hmm... could you take a look with img d g at the size of the partitions
