KT4 Ultra won't post.

KT4 Ultra won't give any output to monitor. Tried swapping video cards (AGP), monitors. Fans spin on the video card. Getting LED's on my NIC, so I have power in the PCI's. Hard drive and CD-ROM spins, and system fan comes on. Have yet to clear CMOS, but I'm doubting (also hoping)  that will fix it. No internal speaker, otherwise I'm sure I would be getting beeps. Never flashed BIOS, no recent updates to hardware/software within past two months. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Tried switching the video card already, and I also tried a different monitor as well. I've tested everything else out and I've narrowed it down to the mobo. PSU is fine, and I have since cleared the CMOS as well, but to no avail. I have never flashed the BIOS, and no changes were made in the BIOS before this happened (at least for two months, that's when I added my DVD-ROM.) CPU is fine and when it was up and running, it was around 53 C under a full load. Thanks for the suggestions, though.

  • KT4 Ultra won't boot if I change settings in BIOS

I can't change any cmos settings either. If I change anything in the bios at all it won't boot. it will turn on but won't boot. so I have to clear the cmos to get into windows and my 2500+ Barton is running at 1050mhz because I can't set the fsb to 166(333) like I should be able to. And I just bought the chip yesterday.

Well, its not yet conclusive that your BIOS is bad, all we are saying at this stage is that with a new CPU, you can change settings but it will not Boot. Correct?
When you update a BIOS you only do not always change all the data stored in the memory.
I have, before now, resorted to to using the emergency recovery feature of the BIOS that is well documented.
This way, subject to the memory not having any bad addresses, you completely re-program the BIOS I.C.
Have you tried  BIGRHINO suggestion first?

  • KT4 Ultra Scandisk reader POST hangup

This is a very popular card reader, has anyone else had this problem?
My Sandisk Compact Flash memory card reader causes the POST to hang after a cold boot (power cycle).  This does not happen on a warm boot.  I've tried every combination of USB options in the BIOS.  Also, it's plugged into the 2nd USB port, with my mouse in the 1st one.  I only have 2 USB ports enabled, and the motherboard connector for additional USB ports is unused.
Also note that the POST will hang weather or not a memory card in in the reader.  Also, as soon as I unplug the USB connection from the reader, the POST immediately continues.  When the POST hangs, there are no beeps heard.
    Thanks,
    Steve

It shouldn't be, since I'm using a very high-quality power supply, an Antec TruePower 330.  I also can't imagine a USB card reader to use enough power to cause problems.  It really doesn't use any juice anyway until you put a memory card in it.
Also, if I plug it in after Windows has loaded it will recognize it right away every time.  I think if I plug it in while Windows is booting it will freeze the boot process until I unplug it again.

  • KT4 Ultra Failure to Post

    Problems abound
I cannot get my 1600+ to run at 1400Mhz, it defaults to 1050Mhz. After setting the FSB to the proper speed the system refuses to post or posts and then crashs quickly afterward. Even at 1050 it isn't very stable. After recovering from a crash resulting from an attempt at full speed the CMOS clears (date and everything). If I try running at 1600+ again the same sad story happens. Sometimes the computer won't post after this and I have to wait a very long time for it to decide to post. I've had all sorts of problems connected with this but the most recent and severe have been freezes in the bios. I've noticed that this problem is not as common on the KT4 as it is on other boards, but this deosn't help my situation. I've contacted MSI for an RMA number but I don't really want to be down for that long. Is there some solution I haven't thought of?
I've been through 3 PSU's with this computer 2 of which were good, 2 sets of ram, 2 processors, and 2 HSF's. It can't be an airflow problem I'm in an antec case with all but one fan installed and I'm running a fan rated for the XP2000+ skived fans and copper bottome. My PSU is 350 I refuse to believe that isn't enough power for this system even with 2 HD's, 2 CD-roms, a GF4 Ti4200, and the rest. I'm not running registered dimms or anything special other than hi-qual samsung ram. Please help me my P3-800 is supposed to be my backpack computer, now its my desktop not what its meant for.
I have artic silver on the PSU and a fan that is rated for the XP2000+, heat is not an issue, especially in my antec case.  I had one of the faulty gainward GF4's but it fails to post on other video cards.  The d-bracket shows 4 reds.  I'm sure its not one of the brass spacers I only used 6 and I'm always very careful.
    Stats on my PSU
    +3.3V 28A
    +5V 25.5A
    +12V 16A
Seems like that would be enough
    350W total output.

    Hi,
    I think i've not understood...
    Are you trying to overclock?
if yes note that AMD and KT4V, even on my system, hold only a very little range of FSB adjustemend (10-15 Mhz) then the system doesen't POST and I've to clear CMOS!
For example I'm able to get my XP2600+ from 166 to 176 with a lot of CPU heat and a little increasment of the VCore (1.650 -> 1.675), then.... CRASH!!
    Dario
    P.S.
With an XP2600+ on KT4V, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, 1 HD, Radeon video card, an extra case fan I use 350W PSU and it works!

  • New KT4 Ultra Won't boot

Still looking for an answer to my boot up problem.  Computer starts and the lights on the dbracket stop at the first green light.  I get no video, keyboard or mouse and I have to use the power supply switch to turn it off.  I assembled the board with no problems. Rule out the stupid stuff like plugging stuff in with power on the board or misinstalling the cooling fan. I followed the instructions carefully.  Did I break this thing, or should I buy a new power supply X(  and try again?  It would have been nice if the manual said something about the power supply so I could have planned that into my system.  I really thought 300 watts was enough...  it worked fine on my Shuttle system.  If you have a recommended power supply in the $30-40 range, please let me know the make/model so I can go shopping.
I would greatly appreciate any help that will keep me from having to spend hours on the phone with the MSI Tech Support help desk.

I had this problem when I first got my KT4 Ultra and it was either one of two things I did and it works fine now.
Make sure that you don't have more of those spacers that seperates your MB from your case. There should only be like 6 that you need to put on. Any more than what you have screw holes for up top and you're potentially shorting out the board to the case. Luckily I didn't cause any damage and as soon as I put only the necessary spacers in, I had full boot up.
Another possibility is that your jumper pin that is used to clear the CMOS is in the wrong position. I contacted MSI tech support before and pointed out that what was shown in the diagram as the correct jumper position was different than what is said in the instructions. This caused me some confusion and luckily again, it didn't cause any damage.
Hopefully someone else will chime in on my response to your problem and either back me up or disprove it but it couldn't hurt to double check those things I've pointed out.

  • KT3 Ultra Won't Post

I just bought it and swapped the mobo with an IWill. I,m running a T-Bird 1400. It is showing a Testing Real Time Clock message on the rear USB Card... I have cleared the CMOS numerous times it still has not posted once yet....

I found a fantastic computer case.  It comes with 2 blower motors (beside the power supply).  One on top of the case and one on the left side. The motherboard facing it.   I don't know who makes it, but here is the URL for the store I got mine, located here in the sunny and hot San Antonio, Texas.

Maybe you have similar problems I had today.  Get into BIOS, and set the CPU clock for 133 and the multiplier for 10.5  It will run @ 1400, like mine.  Thanks to Measus. :D

Hi. This is to let you and others know that I couldn't achieve even a 1 fsb overclock with my KT4 ULTRA-SR The system runs excellent at stock settings, but any attempt to OC was met with a no go. I am awaiting a new bios ,as my board has the original 1.o bios on it. I saw no reason to flash ,as others with the KT4 had no success with 1.1 and bigger P/S and bigger ram. I had to download the latest issue of FUZZY4 to even get it to display.on the desktop.I guess we will see if the new bios will address any issues on the KT4 boards. BIGDADDY51 :D  :D  ;(

  • MT4 Ultra FISR won't POST (SATA Problem)

I've been having trouble with my system booting that got a LOT worse yesterday when I tried to upgrade my soundcard.
About a month ago, my system would start loading the operating system, then the hard drives would make a clicking sound (the same sound they make when they shut down), and the OS would stop loading (sometimes it would get to the "XP is now loading screen and the loading bar would keep moving, other times it would stop at a black screen). I was able to load the system by restarting after this happened, and the OS would load without a problem, and the system was rock solid in Windows.
On Friday afternoon I shut down to upgrade my soundcard, as well as change a couple USB headers on my mobo to work with a new front bezel I got. When I restarted, the hard drives started clicking nearly immediately (and did it several times in succession, rather than just once as they had before). They would do this earlier, too, either when the RAID chip's BIOS were loading or when the Mobo's BIOS were loading, and the system would not POST and give the "all working" beep.
I'm using 2 Maxtor 250GB SATA drives in RAID0 off a Promis 376 Onboard SATA Raid controller on an MSI Kt4 Ultra FISR motherboard, with 1gb of Corsair RAM and a Barton 2500+. Since I'd had this problem before, I called Maxtor and received two new drives, swapped them out a couple weeks ago, and still had the problem booting. I experimented with the drives today by leaving only one plugged in at a time and found that the system POSTs fine with one of the drives plugged in, and that the sounds are not made when that drive is off. Of course, since the array is RAID0, the OS cannot load. When both drives are plugged into power, but the drive making noise is not plugged into the mobo, it still makes the clicking noise and the mobo still does not post. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Kt4 Ultra wont post after XP SP1 update

Hello i have had this mobo for close to 6 mths and have had no problems untill a few weeks ago. It started to intermitingly boot to no video w/2fast beeps followed by 4-8 other beeps. D-Bracket 2 shows 1.2.3.green 4.red. RTC (Real Time Clock)  Just upgraded to Windows XP SP1 and now it will not boot unless cmos is cleared. But any attempt to change bios settings and reboot, gives the same problem. Even with default settings it just gives a white bar at bottom and hangs. I have taken it completly apart 4-5 times, and have tried different components (Video card, CD/DVD, PSU CPU Ram) from all my other pc's still same problem. Anyone have any ideas? • KT4 Ultra: problem config. raid array IDE3

I owe the MSI 6590 KT4 Ultra BSR mainboard and I have difficulties configurring the RAID array in striping mode, on the IDE3 controller.
The manual describes on page 2-18 it's possible to connect up to 2 hard drives, cdrom, 120mb fd and other devices to the IDE3 controller.
Unfortunately only one of my two MAXTOR D740X-6L (6L080J4) 80gig drives is recognized by the array.
One Maxtor hard drive is jumpered as MASTER and the other is set up as SLAVE.
When I hook up the cable to an ordinary IDE port (eg IDE1) the two drives are properly recognized.
Both drives can be formatted using the regular IDE ports, this means without any cluster errors or other errors so the drives are physically OK.
Before I wrote this post I checked the support section again to make sure I am using the latest BIOS which is 1.1. I also downgraded to 1.0, but that didn't solve my problem either.
Since I work in a computer shop now and then I had the opportunity to check two Maxtor Fireball3 30gig drives on a different MS-6590 RAID board (BIOS 1.1.) and exactly the same problem occurs: the 2nd drive won't be recognized in the ARRAY on IDE3.
Please tell me what to do to make the striping option fully work on my two IDENTICAL Maxtor hard drives since MSI support came up with a standard email, which didn't cheer me up at all. Hopefully this time they will investigate this matter since no doubt more people will experience this.

Thanks for the quick response, though it's not satisfactory for me (of course).
Actually before installing the new KT4 Ultra I owed the KT266 Pro RAID motherboard. It's true this board has two controllers for the RAID option. Nevertheless because after reading the manual of this new board I was convinced I could connect two hard drives on the IDE3-channel. This is the reason I decided to go ahead and to upgrade to this new mainboard.
I guess I have to go back to my employer and fall back again to my KT266 (MS6380).

  • Error detecting promise sata controller on kt4 ultra

    Hello,
I've searched the forum and "the rest" of the internet without finding a solution to my problem.
The problem is: Normally when you boot the kt4-ultra you will have a message saying "FastTrack 376(tm) Bios version 1.00.0.18(c)2002-2005 Promise Technology, Inc." and then either No drive attached to FastTrack Controller, The BIOS is not installed or information about your HDD configuration.
In my case sometimes without any reasonable explaination my computer won't detect the promise fasttrak controller AT ALL! It just jumps right over it, as it didn't excists. This is very strange since it's enabled in the BÌOS settings and it could be detected at the next reboot, or in many cases it wont be detected again for several days
As far as I can see it has nothing to do with the harddrives connected to it, as it happens anyway either with a SATA disk connected, IDE disk or no disks at all....
If anyone could help me out with this problem I'll be very gratefull!

I've litary tried every possible combination. The problem remains even with no disks or CD/DVD drives installed on the Fasttrak controller or IDE 1/2. Sometimes the controller is detected, sometimes not.
I should point out that if the controller is detected it always find my HDD who's connected to it and it works fine in Windows. But if it's not detected Windows will find a new hardware and try to install drivers to it, but it won't work cause the hardware is reporting an error and Windows will ofcourse not find a disk....

What operative system do you have? On a quick search I found mostly linux related problems, though I was not too thorough.

I've had this problem for over 6 months now and I'm getting a BIT tired the shitty controller....

  • KT4 Ultra RAM problems and others

    Hi,
    just bought KT4 Ultra, with 512MB DDR-RAM 266/2100 CL 2,5 and Athlon XP 2100+, BIOS V1.2.
During boot-up the computer tells me, that I've got 1024 MB RAM although I only have 512MB. Linux says the same and RAM Test Software does too !! I can't install RedHat nor Windows XP, they always crash, prbably due to RAM problem.
I've already tried out all 3 memory slots.
Any suggestion what to do ?
Why does the computer not recognize any device on the 3rd IDE port ( neither IBM Deskstar w/ 40GB, LS 120 Drive, CD-ROM Drive). My BIOS doesn't show ANY options for the 3rd IDE port!
    TIA

  • KT4 Ultra and PC3200 speed detect problem

    Hi all,
I am new to the forum, having just bought a KT4 Ultra for my new system.  It features the following components:
KT4 Ultra (sorry not sure of model number as I'm posting from work, but I checked for BIOS updates and there's only one which looks like a  USB2 compatibility fix)
    1 stick of 512Mb PC3200 memory
    AMD 2700XP+ (333FSB) CPU
ATI Radeon 9000 128Mb (this will do until DX9 cards available
Intel 100 Pro network card for my ADSL hub (my KT4 did not come with onboard network socket)
    350W power supply
    Win2K Pro SP3
I have two problems.  One is that the machine won't ever shutdown - it always reboots.  Having done a search of this forum, I will check the "Wake on LAN" settings in the BIOS as of course, plugged into an ADSL router, the LAN+WAN is constantly live... so I'm hoping that will be fixed later today....
But, the second problem is one of performance - in that with the initial auto detect settings, the BIOS found a 1500+ CPU and 400Mhz memory.  When I manually change the bus speed to 166, the CPU is recognised correctly as a 2700, but the memory dropped down to 333Mhz speed.  If I then disable the autodetect for the memory and manualyl set 400Mhz and CAS2 speed, I can't even get to the BIOS screen on bootup.  I get 4 or 5 short beeps, nothing on the display and need to short pins 2+3 of JCAT1 to reset to factory defaults.
Any idea how I can get my PC to boot with the correct speed memory (ie PC3200@400)?
    Thanks for any tips,
    Mike.

    Hi
I have the same problem when I set FSB to 200Mhz - DDR to 400Mhz and on boot screen i always see DDR 333.
I make a test and when I use 152Mhz FSB (or up) DDR Always is 333Mhz no maters than in Bios is saved DDR400.
    My system is

    I make some tests
    CPU on 200Mhz FSB x 8.5 multiplier, or 8 or 7.5 or 7 (1.575V)
    MEM always show DDR333
    WHY ?
It is possible to run FSB/MEM sincrhony on 200Mhz ?
I also make a mem tests with Sandra 2003 when
    I use 200Fsb x 8.5 and Bios DDR 333  and
    200Fsb x 8.5 and Bios DDR 400
the results is the same .
I'm sure that On boot Screen DDR information is right.
and always DDR is on 333 mhz wneh FSB is more than 152mhz No mather what you set in Bios ( 266 or 333 or 400)
    And other strange thing is:
with my previous locked XP 1600+ (10.5 x 133) I can run on 166FSB / MEM with this DDR (samsung) on max aggressive settings 2.5 2-5-2 1 Ultra
    now with my new CPU i can't run on 166FSB less tnah 3 3-6-3 2 Normal ?
    Thanks in advance.

  • KT4 Ultra not even powering up

I've just finished pouring many paychecks into the assembly of my new computer.  On a recommendation from a friend I decided to go with MSI's KT4 Ultra for my motherboard.
Unfortunately I'm on my second KT4 Ultra after a regretful burning of the first one with an older video card (ATI Radeon 7000 2x/4x AGP) I was later to learn was a "murderer of motherboards".
Anywayz...the second one was running perfect but still needed some tweaking as it was reading my Athlon 2700+ as a 1500+ and I still needed to hook up an old IDE harddrive as I was just using a SATA harddrive.
So I first changed the FSB to 166 MHz...it booted up and recognized my 2700+.  So then I tried to install my IDE harddrive using the first IDE slot.  Then after that she decided not to power up any more.
I've pretty much checked everything and disconnected everything and still it will not power up at all.  I'm supicious that it might be the new PSU (Kingwin KWI-450W 3-Fan)that might be the problem although that's what I'm hoping:P
So I'm pretty much out of ideas as what to do other than buy another mobo...one that's not MSI!!!!!

    Hi,
I have the same issues with my KT4 Ultra (pure version).
Running GF4 Ti4400, Athlon XP2400+ etc, 450W power etc. There are quite many posts of similar issues all over the Via Arena forums and some here as well. KT4 Ultra's and KT4V's seem to be the boards affected.
Installing the Via USB Filter Patch helped with narrowing down the number of crashes and some of the errors.
(note: disable automatic restart from 'Startup and Recovery settings' to see the driver that crashes)
Link to Via Arena FTP site
I had a K7T266pro2-RU board before this which worked 100% stable. I've tested all my components which are fine. Tested different power supplies, memory. Still, continuous random errors after many times of reinstalling Win2K by the book and with default bios settings.
Sometimes the setup works fine for a week and then starts to mess around again.
Looks like setting the cpu fsb down to 128 MHz from 133 MHz solves the issues, so try that and report back.
    Also check the filter patch.
I'm personally waiting for the next bios release to fix these issues - if not, I'm showing this board RMA and go to nForce2 chipset.
I also tested the 1.25 beta bios, which gave me lots of crashes during Win2K boot -> flashed back to v1.10 and booting works again.
