KT4AV - Spontaneous Power Down

Hi There,
I recently bought a new KT4AV with a XP2400 for my parents, popped it into the case and tried to install WinXP. XP installed no problem, but then I found the pc would just switch off of its own accord. I checked all the usual things, cpu seated correctly, fan fitted correctly, RAM ok, etc... Then came over here and read the first topic regarding Q-Tec psu's... Yep, it has a Q-Tec.
The psu in the machine is the 400w dual fan model, which from reading all of the posts on this forum, sounds as if it is this which might be causing my problems... I just wanted to know whether others thought this was the root of my problem, before I go out and buy a new one.
If the forum thinks that it is the psu, how do you guys rate the following models:
Thermaltake Silent 420W ATX PSU Dual Fan - Manufacturer Code: W0008RE
FSP (Sparkle Power) 350W ATX Passive PFC - Manufacturer Code: FSP350-60PN
They are both fairly similar in price, and both appear to offer the recommended amp ratings and combined wattage... but other opinions are welcome.
FYI, the set-up is as follows:
XP2400,
256 PC2700 DDR RAM,
GeForce4 MX440,
Diamond Supra Express 56k modem,
Seagate 5400 rpm drive (I forget which one...)
floppy,
Lite-on 16x CD-RW,
and er, thats it... of course I am using the on-board sound and ethernet, although I am planning on disabling the ethernet port once I deliver the pc to my folks as they don't have broadband....
I originally thought that the 400w psu would have been more than enough...
Your thoughts and recommendations most welcome!
Regards,
Flak

Hi, Wonkanoby, Bas, et al,
Ok, I have a couple of figures (mainly of different psu's, please recommend one) for ya....
Antec Truepower 330
+5v +12v +3.3v
30A  17A   28A
5+3.3=12 combined= 10W
Antec SL450
+5v +12v +3.3v
40A  20A   28A
5+3.3=240W, 5+3.3+12=380W
Hiper 350 (Never heard of 'em, but the following from http://www.hiper-pc.com/static/products.html and are apparantly max loadings...)
+5v +12v +3.3v
35A  15A  28A
5+3.3=175W, 5+3.3+12=330W
And finally Hiper 420
+5v +12v +3.3v
28A  16A  48A 5+3.3=210, 5+3.3+12=400W
Those last two are fairly cheap (around the same price as the crappy Q-Tec I bought originally. I do think that the last 3.3v is a typo, tho.... 48A?!!
I would appreciate your recommendations on these psu's (I won't sue if they are pants!) as you obviosuly have quite a bit more experience with MSI boards than I ;o)
How do these comapre to the Enermax 365?
I have an Enermax 365 in my rig, I am about to try it in the poorly pc, but are any of those psu's signifcantly better than the Enermax? If they are, I might use this opportunity to upgrade mine.... and give my folks my old Enermax, bearing in mind that my folks don't do much other than check e-mail, play Solitaire and my old man occasionally has a blast on NFS5.....
TIA, guys.... very good forum this!
fM
to add another couple of psu's... thought that whilst I was at it, I might as well ask for the world...;o)

  • Spontaneous power downs

I just bought this tablet a couple weeks ago and it was working great. Then all of a sudden Thursday night about 20 minutes after I had just used it, it wouldn't power on though the battery was at 100%. I plugged it in and it showed the icon for battery charging with lightning bolt then it showed a battery icon with a "?" in it. But I pressed the power button and it came on. So I unplugged it and played with it for a little then shut it back down. When I tried to power it back on later, it wouldn't come on until I again plugged it in. It has gotten progressively worse as now it seems that if I even move the tablet it will just black out. Even in the middle of powering up the screen will black out.  All in less than two days???? Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks for taking time to check the version and offer these specifics. Are you using the original charger that came with the device? Please test the charging function while in Safe Mode to see if performance improves as this will stop corrupted apps temporarily: http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-122285/

  • Spontaneous shutting down.

My Power iMAc G5 10.4.11 is spontaneously shutting down when I close all open apps.
This has never happened before and energy saver shutdown does not appear active when checked.
I know this is an old iMac and I will be replacing it later this year, but it works fine otherwise and does everything that I need it to.
    Any advice?
    Many thanks.

    Have you reset the SMU?

  • Mini spontaneous shut-down and application shut-down problem

    Help!
    I've searched. I've read. I can't find the answer!
After I updated my firmware several weeks ago (to SMC 1.3f4), I've had problems with spontaneous shut-down of the computer, and a frustrating application shut-down issue (Safari, Mail, Word--you name it!).
I tried to find the other firmward update from last summer, which I read about in several posts from July/August, but the link is dead (Mac Mini Firmware update 1.0.1).
Coincidentally, after an office break-in two weeks ago, I FileVaulted my computer. I thought my problem must have to do with that, but all the posts I can find here are about this firmware thing.
Should I/can I reinstall the SMC 1.3f4 update? Is there some secret to the no-longer-available 1.0.1 update?
Can anyone help me? (I would certainly appreciate it!)

Try a safe boot, hold the shift key and power up, this will take a little loner than normal, hold the shift till you see the progress bar. See if it works normal, if it does than it is more than likely some 3rd party software. Then restart normal and check your console for panics. That would be your isssue.  You can also start holding command R and restoring from utililities.  Back up before you do anything.

How do I stop an app from waiting?  I have tried to reboot by holding the home key and power button to power down.  The app is still grayed out and waiting so it cannot be deleted.  Also, I have tried to sync the apps from my laptop and tried downloading new appswith no success.  Can you help?  Thanks

If there are multiple apps trying to download at once, only one can download at a time and the rest say "Waiting" until it is then their turn. Try this. Double tap the icon of the Waiting app, and it should resume the download.

Another thing to try - Turn the iPad Off & then back ON.
    If that doesn't work:
    •  Log out of your iTunes store account.  Go to Settings > Store > Sign Out Then press the Home button.
    • Then press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously and don't release them when it brings up the Turn Off screen; keep holding them until the Apple logo appears.
    • After restart, the Waiting should be gone.

My iPod touch 4 generation 32gb sometimes is really slow. When ever my iPod is being slow and I get on an app the app will shut down. My lock botton is broken and I use the accesery botton to lock it. That being said I can't power down my iPod. I need help, I don't know what to do! Could you tell me how I can power down my iPod or how I can fix the slowness and the shutting down of the apps.

    - Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.
    - Next, reset the iPod
To reset the iPod without the hardware buttons,
Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. All your wifi and bluetooth preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected. You will have to rejoin wifi networks and repair BT devices
    Then you can try:
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • Power down issue on a K9N SLI-2F (601-7250-090)

I have a K9N-2F with the serial number 601-7250-090 Kxxxxblablabala
According to the sticky on the powerdown issue it should not be affected.
But since about a month it will power down when I download large files.
It always powers down the first 5-6 times when I switch the computer on.
Then it works, sometimes for hours, sometimes for minutes.
But it always shuts down when I download files from the internet or p2p.
If I disable the LAN-controllers the computer runs just fine, with no powerdowns even on startup.
Do I have this problem as well? I have the latest BIOS. Is there anything I could do or do I have to get MSI to replace it?
    Regardsfrom Sweden.

    I have a Amd Athlon64 6000+ (125W)
XION 630W PSU with 21A rails.
2gb Corsair Value Select 5300 DDR
I know the amps is a bit low but the PSU is not the problem... I have managed to narrow it down to the LAN controllers.
If I push my GF8800 grahics card to the limit nothing happens, so it couldn't be the PSU.
But if I start up IE or Firefox and dowload a file or enters a heavy webpage the computer shuts down.
Also it ALWAYS shuts down 5-6 times when I boot up the first time after having the computer turned off over night.'
Then it runs allright for 5 minutes up to a few hours.
If I disable the LAN controllers the computer never shuts down,
When I start up Azerus it shuts down after just a few minutes.
This problem started about a month ago.
It worked just fine for 4 months.
I tried giving the CPU more juice, but that didn't help.
The DDR runs at 1.90v bydefault.

  • Zen Vision:M 30GB won't power down; any ide

I've had a 30GB Zen Vision M for a couple of months now! Awesome player, went through the usual round of recognition problems, but it's been working fine of late. My problem is, it won't power down now. When I try to power down, the unit says it's powering down, the dispaly goes black except for the battery icon. And it stops there. The blue backlight on the menu buttons stays on, the battery icon stays on, and eventually it turns off after 5 minutes because of being idle. Not a terrible problem I know, but a real niusance. I am running the most current firmware (have been for a while). I've tried resetting and clean-up. No change. I'm afraid of trying to reinstall the firmware, in case I have the same problem that many others are having, and go from a good player with a power issue, to a player that does nothing. I can't see it being the power switch itself, since it powers up fine, and tries to power down. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. birder

    Hello Dsgrov,
    Welcome to Creative forums!
You can get a lot of results if you search "Zen Vision M not charging" on the search box.
Here's one, you might want to check this thread.

  • Love my new ipad.  But after upgrading to ios7 Safari became dodgy.  Now it is frozen in a white screen and nothing will free it.  Everything else on the ipad works fine. I deleted data, history, cookies, etc.  Same problem.  No change after power down.

Everything worked fine on my new ipad.  After I upgraded to ios7 it still worked fine even if it looked very different.  But Safari started acting strangely (it is starting the same thing on my iPhone 4s, too).  Finally, it froze in state with no URL, no keyboard will come up, I can get Safari to close and start, but not actually function.  I went into settings and deleted all the cookies, data, history, and so forth.  Same state.  I powered down the iPad and restarted.  Same state.  I tried a trick were I held down the button to bring up the power down stripe and then holding down the home button.  Same state.
What can I do?  Can I delete Safari and re-install it somehow?  Should I take it to an Apple store?

  • Kernel panic when I power down my Thunderbolt 1 drive AFTER unmounting it

I've been using a "LaCie d2 USB 3.0/Thunderbolt 4TB" external drive since April 2014, which is connected to my late-2012 iMac via the Thunderbolt 1 port.
When I'm not using the drive, I first unmount it, and then power it down at the mains.
This worked fine until 1 Feb 2015, when I started getting a kernel panic every time I power down the drive - after it's been unmounted.
The issue is 100% reproducible, and it doesn't matter how long I wait between unmounting the drive and powering it down - I've tried waiting several minutes. Powering down the drive ALWAYS causes an instantaneous kernel panic.
I do not get a kernel panic if I turn off the drive as follows: unmount the drive, disconnect the Thunderbolt cable, power down the drive, and then reconnect the Thunderbolt cable (while the drive is turned off).
The panic report text is virtually identical each time this occurs. Below is the most recent example.

I'll carry on using my workaround (disconnecting the Thunderbolt cable before I power down the drive), until the next version of Yosemite is released; then I'll test again.

  • My ipad will not completely shut off.  If I try to power down, it reboots on its own.

When I hold the sleep button down to power off my ipad, I get the red slide that confirms that I want to power down.  I slide it like I always have, but once it shuts down, it immediately reboots.  I can't get it to shut off completely.

when you slide the slider, as it is shutting down, the little revolving circle spins.  It is not rebooting, just doing an orderly shutdown.  Make sure you let go of the sleep button when you slide the slider, or it will turn back on.

  • Internal iMac hard drive keeps trying to power down without my consent

How do you stop an internal hard drive from shutting down when you didn't ask it to?
    Background:
I use Missing Sync for Palm to sync my Palm handheld with my iMac. My Palm has a SD card slot it in and the sync software came with a program that allows me to mount the
SD card as an external drive on my iMac. From there, I can add podcasts, music or whatever I want directly to the card. I have used this software since March with no problems.
Also, when you put my computer to sleep or shut it down, there is a click and then the internal hard drive shuts down.
Last night, I activated the program to mount the SD card to my iMac and instead of it mounting, the iMac's internal hard drive started trying to shut down.
I have used this program many, many times to mount the SD card to my iMac with absolutely no problem. It was weird this time because I kept hearing that clicking noise. The computer became extremely sluggish. To me, it appeared that the internal hard drive was trying to shut down. After about 4-5 clicks, it succeeded and the computer froze.
Since that time, shortly after you turn the iMac on, you hear that clicking noise trying to power down the hard drive. Sometimes, it just takes a few clicks and the hard drive shuts off. Sometimes the computer will boot all the way up, I can log in and launch a program before it shuts off and the computer freezes. While I can't check the drive with First Aid or Diskwarrior because it shuts off before I can scan it, I assume the data and the drive are ok because I have been able to successfully boot from it and log into my account but shortly after I log in, the hard drive shuts down and the computer is stuck.
Any ideas? Any help would be wonderful!

You are right. It is failing. I took my Mac into the Apple Store and talked with a genius. Although the hard drive would not do what it had at home (typical when you're trying to get something diagnosed) I shut it down so he could hear the noise I do.
Sure enough, he said the noise I heard was the drive read head hitting its start position. When a hard drive shuts down, the drive head moves out of the way since the "hard disk" is actually a thin floppy magnetic disc. The noise I kept hearing was indeed the drive trying to shut down.
Fortunately, I did make a clone of my internal drive to that external drive 6 months ago so I was (eventually) able to copy over all the important files, update the external clone and boot off of it.
Sure enough, tonight, I opened Disk Utility and it said in plain red letters that the drive had reported a hardware failure and should be replaced.
Since my iMac is Summer 2001, the Mac Genius said they no longer carry parts for it so he gave me the name of a local place that would be glad to fix it up. I called them and luck would have it that they were completely out of the internal drives used by my model iMac. So I have to check next week to see if they have received more in yet.
The good news is I can get a slightly larger interal hard drive since I was down to 10GB of a 60GB factory drive. So far, I hear I can go as high as 160GB but the RPM must be lower since my iMac has no fans.
Thanks for your help! As much as I didn't want to believe it, you hit the problem right on.
