KT4V (MS6712) questions.

Hi, A few months ago I picked up this mobo cheap and have been happily running an XP2400 cpu along with a 9800pro and 512mb PC2100 RAM but am now thinking of upgrading.
Would I be right in saying that a 3000XP cpu is the fastest this board supports with the latest Bios ?  Also what is the fastest DDR Ram I can use with this board ?
I have downloaded the newest bios (1.9 ?) but have yet to flash it, is it easy ?  Do you have to do it from the floppy drive as I haven't got one ?
Thanks.

It is possible that running the RAM and CPU at different speeds could be the cause of the errors. It is always best to run CPU & RAM at 1:1 ratio for best stability.
But, with the RAM causing errors at it's rated speed, it generally means the RAM is bad. As you bought it thru Ebay, I would guess someone has overclocked it in the past, thereby damaging it. As long as it runs great at 266, and causes no errors, you could just run it at that speed. However, if you decide to upgrade the CPU to a 333FSB, you could run into the same problem again.
Another option to try, is raising the RAM voltage to 2.6V or 2.7V and try the memtest again. Sometimes increasing the voltage will allow RAM to work better, more so for large sticks of RAM.

  • 2 KT4V-L questions

    Hi.
I have a KT4V-L and an xp2400+.  I would like to change the multiplier, so I can up the fsb.  I thought KT400 was supposed to allow for multiplier changing on new T-Bred B's.  The multiplier is currently set on auto.  I have tried a few different multiplier settings, each time having to clear the CMOS because the computer wouldn't boot.  I even set the multiplier to 15x, which is the factory set multiplier and it still wouldn't boot.  I might go so far as to take out the cpu and manually unlock it, but the hsf was hard to put on, and I don't want to take it off.
That leads me to the second question.  The hsf I'm using is the Vantec Aeroflow w/ TMD fan.  The bios doesn't detect a cpu fan, I don't know if that is a bios problem or the fan.  Not really important, but just want to find out what's wrong.
    Thx for any help,
    nismo

    no worries,
as far as the CPU goes I believe it is still locked (unless you obtained one that was factory unlocked), and cant be unlocked by the BIOS "yet", however the Tbirds can be unlocked very quickly and with less mess than the Palamino's.  A good guide is here.

  • KT4V (ms6712) and XP 2600+ not compat?!

I used to have an XP 2000+ and it worked w/ the 1.9 bios, but now I just got a 2600 for free, and it won't POST or anything.
Could this be b/c of bios upgrade needed?  I looked in the other upgraded version and it mentions 2400, etc but no 2600.....
Should I update bios?  I ask b/c I don't have a floppy installed and I can get one (borrow) but I wanted to know if it was worth it.
The processor works too, it came from friend.  And mobo is fine for I put back in the 2000+ to see if it'd work and it did.

"...I'll do it, but honestly would that really be the reason for the no POST?..." Nobody can assure it's THE reason, but could be one. Also, could be the P.Su. and it's lack of juice in 3,3v. rail, or perhaps any other "solution" invented by you to appear doing what you should do to prepare your PC to work. Thinking all advises are for silly people, because you can avoid them by other means, show your creativity but seems they (or one of them) doesn't work, and your'e taking unnecesary risks. So you should redo one by one all your "personal solutions" to see if you find the one that keeps your PC from turning on. You see, thermal grease is used only to keep air out in the part where CPU die meets HSF base. Used thermal grease is not as liquid as new one, so it could let some air in. Air isolates that point and temp. would rise too much and could burn CPU. System can detect it and make CPU stop working. Is it happening now ? Who knows ? But your "solution" doesn't help by any means to assure there isn't a problem there. If HSF was good for 2000+, it doesn't mean it  can do it's job with the 2600+. If P.Su. worked in other system that uses lower power and doesn't depend so much on 3.3v. rail, it could work OK with it, but that doesn't mean it will not work OK in this rig.  So, as you see, there are limits on what you can do or not.

  • I have a KT4V and would like to install ati 9600XT. Do I need to upgrade BIOS?

I have a KT4V (MS6712) running version 1.0 BIOS (never updated).  I tried an ATI Radeon 9600XT a couple of days ago. The system and display went nuts.  I figured the card was DOA, but I have since reaad on this board that a newer version of the BIOS was to fix the ATI 9600 problem.  Should I try to update my BIOS to run this card since I need to update my system.

Mod please deletee or lock this thread. It is a dup.

Friend, does it means that Mod must have each and every mobo???
I also just an end user of MSI products, just that I've more rights to this manage this forum and trying the best to help up to my knowledge so don't be unreasonable and I've already told you that 8x AGP cards are backward compatible to 4x AGP port.
Btw, I'm glad that you are able to find a way out on your own.

  • ATAPI Incompatible message when booting

Hi Have just purchased a KTV4 MS6712 board and cannot get the board to recoginise my CD-RW (Sony) and my CD/DVD drives during boot up. I have attached the drives to IDE2 and set the jumpers to Master (CD-RW) and Slave (CD/DVD). When Secondary IDE master and slave is set to Auto in the BIOS the drives are not detected. When I set the BIOS to CD/DVD I get error message 'ATAPI Incompatible' . I have tried all combinations of jumpers with both drives attached and only one attached..nothing works. These drives worked perfectly on my previous MSI motherboard.
I attached CD-RW drive to IDE1 (with the HDD) and set the jumper to Slave and this works fine. But nothing works on IDE 2.
    I'm using
    KT4V (MS6712)
    Athlon XP 2200+ (1.8ghz)
    Sapphire ATI 9000 Graphics card.
    256MB of DDR 333
    WIN 98SE
    Can anyone help??

I have checked all the jumpers and each is set correctly.
I tried the following and got the results stated.
Connected brand new CR-RW only to IDE2. Jumper as master. Set Bios as Auto. Result : Not detected.
Then set BIOS to CD/DVD. Result : ATAPI Incompatible message.
Tried Same drive in IDE1 as Slave with HDD as Master. Result : Both drives detected and available.
Tried Same drive on its own in IDE1 as Master. Result : Drive detected and available.
Tried HDD in IDE2 on it's own. Result : Not detected.
Nothing seems to work in IDE2.
Only thing I haven't tried is 80pin cable..But why would everything work in IDE1 with the 40pin cable and not in IDE2.
    Could the Board be faulty??

  • System crash (blue screen) during CD burn

    Hello All,
I need your advise due to serious problem with my PC. Per technical specification located in the following site CPU support: the motherboard supports 133/266 MHz FSB and Ratio 12.5.
Unfortunately, I found out that my recently purchased computer doesn’t work at such frequency(FSB=133, Ratio = 12.5), namely, all operation related to the DVD-ROM (Pioneer DVD-120) or Samsung CD-R/RW eventually caused system crash. I tryed to reinstall the OS, however it has not solved the problem. Only frequency decreasing allows to avoid the crash(blue screen of death). The proper volatages and temperature value are as follows: Vcore = 1.74V. PS_3v = 3.25V, PS_5v = 4.95V, PS_12v = 12.24V,  Tcpu = 48C, Tsys = 33C.
    Please advise,
    Thanks, Raz Noam
    Here is my configuration:
    Athlon XP 2000+
    KT4V MS6712 motherboard
    256 Mb  DDR 333 Smasung
40 Gb IDE master on IDE1
60 Gb IDE slave on IDE1
    Samsung SW 248F master
    Pioneer DVD-120 slave
    Windows XP Home Edition

System crash that I have experienced occurs only during CD Burner or DVD activities. It is very random, however I have notice that when I am burning CD (test mode only) the system crash occurs quite often. I attribute it to the fact that this mode is perhaps harder than only play. However, system crash occurs also during play mode. The crash is actualy stop mode with different error core, I mean, stop 0xd1, 0x0A, 24, 77. BTW, I dissabled autoreboot option. So far it was no problem with reboot after crash. So, I suspected some problem with mainboard, however, perhaps, that PSU can impcat as well. Unfortunately, I have no experience with PC hardware, therefore I need your advice based on rich experience. What I dare to assume that the problem rather in hardware than in SW.

  • Upgrading kt4v mobo, some questions

    hi,
recently I bought a Kt4v mobo, but I still use an amd 1.2 ghz duron as processor, therefore my mobo is set to 100fsb atm with is bad  ;(
I'm thinking about upgrading to an AMD athlon but I have some questions.
I'd like to get my FSB at 166, I'm currently using 2 256mb DDR ram sticks with a speed of 333mhz, is that possible?
(well, actualy one is 400mhz, but as this mobo only supports one stick of ddr400, it's set to 333)
what is the fastest Processor my mobo can handle with that kind of ram?
and should I change other speeds when installing it like my AGP bus speed etc.. to prevent them beiing damaged after upping the fsb?
that's all, If someone could answer these I'd be very gratefull, thx
    oh yeah, specs:
    AMD duron 1.2 ghz 200fsb
    KTV4 MSI mobo
Point of view Geforce 4 TI 4280 128mb
    512 MB DDR 333mhz
    Maxtor 80 gig 7200rpm
    samsung 20 gig 5400rpm
    Logitech mx 700 mouse
    wondows XP Pro
    3com nic etc etc etc

    or is it set automatically?
    Yepp!

are Athlon Xp's unlocked by default...should set the multiplier like this then: 12.5 X 166= 2158 mhz
Just let the board handle it, all bios-settings on AUTO.
    Quote
250 watt which might be on the low side
I think the board wouldn't even boot... :D
Psu should have more then 25A/3.3V, 35A/5V and 200W combined power.

  • KT4V-L & FX 5900 Question.

    Hi all,
I just set my Geforce FX 5900 256MB onto my MSI KT4V-L Mobo and got everything working but what are the best settings for the AGP and the apature size ?
Im not 100% sure there is a option for the AGP in the bios it just sets to what it can handel witch i guess with this card will be 8x
The apature size is 128 would it be better with 256 ?
    Sys Specs
    Windows XP
    Athlon XP 2000+
    1GB DDR 400Mhz Ram
    Geforce FX 5900 Ultra 256MB
    MSI KT4V-L

Well its starting to get anoying, Changes the 128 to 256 and noticed a few changes but sounds chopy in a high spec game and gfx are sorta weird to.
Only things i can think are causing the problem are
    1) via version
    2) that option *algo not showing in gfx menu*

  • Just orderded a KT4V-L - system fan question

Building first PC.  Dowloaded the KT4V-L manual and I can only see two fan sockets - one for heatsink fan and one for a system fan.  I would like to add two system fans (one at the front of the case and one at the back) - is this possible?

Thanks.  Is it just me or this forum really slow when changing page, sometimes even timing out?

  • MSI KT4V-L temp question

I have a MSI KT4V-L board and I want to know if this board reads the temperature from the thermistor that is below the CPU or directly from the CPU's core. I understood that the new AMD XPs (I have a XP 1700+ Thoroughbred) have a built-in sensor and the boards can read the temp from it.
As software, I use Motherboard Monitor, the latest version.
    Thanks

i figure they read from to core.  the same setup as mine (same parts) with a different mobo the temps are about 10-15C lower.

  • Bios update questions for KT4V

Hey, I updated my bios and I have been having trouble getting my mainboard to work properly.  I found out that I had to clear my cmos after updating the bios (I didn't see anything about doing that in the bios setup area).
So I cleared the cmos, and I still have to detach the monitor from the video card for the computer to startup.
Another thing I have a question about is that when I startup the computer, it says that I have a 1250 processor, when I have a 2000+ processor.  I adjusted the fsb speed to 133 (although I could have done something else?), and that "fixed" the problem, but after I turned off the computer it wouldn't turn back on again (four red lights in back, no matter what).  I cleared the cmos again and the computer started up.  Are there any settings I should leave alone? ?(

Okay, I set the fsb speed to 133, and the computer starts up, but only after I detach the video card, turn on the computer, turn off the computer, reattach the video card, and then turn on the computer.
All the lights on the D-bracket stay red, which is supposed to mean that the processor is damaged or not installed properly, but the processor works fine in other mobos, and I'm sure the processor is installed properly.  The lights stay red until I turn off the computer, detach the vid card, turn on the computer, let it boot for a couple seconds, turn off the computer, reattach the vid card, and then turn on the computer, at which point the computer starts up normally.
I have no idea what the problem is.

  • KT4V Socket A MS6712 ver 1.0

I recently installed this mother board..  With it came several cpu enhancers like fuzzy logic....  I have searched and cannot find any information on how this program works...  Like the cpu multiplier....  How does it work and what does it do??  For instance mine says 15*  133.4  shows my cpu speed at 2000 mhz and another #  that says cpu 1.65v...  Is there some place one can go and get educated on how to operate this program and what each of these mean...  The instruction book barley gives any detail...   I'm trying to make my cpu run at the fastest, safest speed....  I do a lot of on line gaming.....  The current game i play is Delta Force Black Hawk Down....  My download is 1532 and my upload is 256..

    Peace Out

CPU Speed won't make a difference to your bandwidth.
    Wut CPU do you have?
As well what kind of cooling are you using?
If you wanna overclock ur CPU, the easiest thing to do it just raise the FSB a little.
Also fuzzy logic comes with an auto button.  Try it out if you want.  It tests the maximum speed that your system can be stable at.  Basically it keeps increasing the FSB until your comp crashes.  If you do use auto, you prolly should decrease the FSB a bit after its done testing it.
As well get a good fan.
