KT4V Question about CPU

his CPU AMD Athlon XP2500+ Processor 333 FSB Barton Core
run on this board I see it can handle the 333FSB but I dont see the Barton listed as a CPU? Any Ideas? Thanks Guys/Gals :D

Thanks for the quick replys I figured it would but i wanted to double check it out first with the forum, Has anyone actually ran this chip on this board yet? if so what kinda of problems if any did you run in to ( i know this board had ALOT of trouble with FSB settings and all for awhie there.

  • [SOLVED] Question about CPU temperature

    Hi everybody,
I just want to ask a question about "standard" CPU temperatures because my laptop (a Dell Vostro 3700) is permanently hot with the fans on even when I am not doing anything special.
I have CPU freq scaling active with the conservative governor, and I use Gnome Shell 3.2 with an nVidia using the nouveau driver.
Here are "stable" temperatures while writing this post:
    # sensors
    acpitz-virtual-0
    Adapter: Virtual device
    temp1: +72.5°C (crit = +103.0°C)
    nouveau-pci-0100
    Adapter: PCI adapter
    temp1: +78.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +110.0°C)
    coretemp-isa-0000
    Adapter: ISA adapter
    Core 0: +73.0°C (high = +95.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
    Core 2: +73.0°C (high = +95.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
And this is the output of mpstat
    # mpstat -P ALL
    Linux 3.1.6-1-ARCH (fm) 01/04/2012 _x86_64_ (4 CPU)
    10:16:50 PM CPU %usr %nice %sys %iowait %irq %soft %steal %guest %idle
    10:16:50 PM all 1.59 0.18 0.54 0.02 0.00 0.02 0.00 0.00 97.65
    10:16:50 PM 0 1.88 0.15 0.72 0.02 0.00 0.01 0.00 0.00 97.22
    10:16:50 PM 1 1.64 0.21 0.40 0.02 0.00 0.01 0.00 0.00 97.73
    10:16:50 PM 2 1.47 0.15 0.67 0.02 0.00 0.06 0.00 0.00 97.64
    10:16:50 PM 3 1.36 0.20 0.39 0.02 0.00 0.01 0.00 0.00 98.01
The fan, of course, is full speed (very annoying)
I think that these temperatures are quite high, but I don't know what's really causing all this heating because my laptop is basically idle.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks.

    It's in the previous posts:

    Core 2: +64.0°C (high = +95.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
After (after playing 8 min youtube video)
    acpitz-virtual-0
    Adapter: Virtual device
    temp1: +74.5°C (crit = +103.0°C)
    nouveau-pci-0100

    Core 2: +75.0°C (high = +95.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Fan spinning is better (less noisy) after specifying the kernel parameters.

  • Question about CPU temperature

Hi, I have just built a new system with the following,
    Motherboard - MSI 760GM-P23 (FX)
    CPU FX 6300
and as this is my first venture over to the AMD side of PC's I have some questions about the CPU temp.
The image below is from my system under load, I'm told that the temp readings from AMD CPU's are not accurate below 40c?
The FX 6300 'package temp' cant be accurate with a low of 13c it's simply not possible in a room that's almost 20c.
What is TMPIN1? I hope that's not my actual CPU temp as 69c is way to high. and a Google search for TMPIN1 brings up lots of forum posts regarding MSI boards, Hence my post here.
TMPIN0 looks like the most likely sensor for CPU temp but I'm just not sure, so which one is it? and where is TMPIN1 reading it's info from?
    Regards and many thanks, Dave

What you see with HWINFO is the readings from two different sources. One is the reported temp by the AMD sensor, the other is the same temp but as reported and translated by the Fintek chip that MSI generally uses on their boards.
The differences in readings boils down to the digital signal to analog conversion by the two data suppliers, .i.e AMD sensor/Fintek chip.
If in doubt, always use the higher reported temp as the acceptable one. Quite frankly, I would think what the Fintek reports is probably close to what the real temps are. Common sense will dictate that what you see from the AMD sensor is virtually impossible unless you use liquid cooling.
Also remember that the software in use may differ in readings slightly.
The Fintek chip is reporting 2 CPU temps. I summise the higher as being the CPU core and the lower value as being a sensor in the vicinity of the CPU that MSI has added.
Comparing the info with your HW Monitor, I further believe that TMPIN1 is the same as the Fintek CPU higher temp. TMPIN2 is the one for the lower CPU value in HWINFO and TMPIN0 is probably your southbridge.
If you wish, run both these software packages at the same time and stress your machine in Prime95, Then you can monitor and figure out which ones are going up or down in unison. You may also find that the temps will be a lot closer then.

  • Question about CPU usage for video playback

I've asked a related question already on the Safari forum, but would like some clarification, please.
The speed of this iMac is 400 MHZ and whenever I go to YouTube or almost any other site that requires video I see that the CPU usage can peak way up at 80% or more. I have Flash 9 installed which has a minimum of 500 MHZ, so I get pretty choppy video, but that's not the issue here. I can live with that. I keep any other applications closed. I'm often running a small fan over the top of the iMac to help vent the buildup of heat. I can monitor the temperature at the Hard Drive and I suppose that gives me an idea, of sorts, about general temperature conditions inside.
The answer I got was that this kind of CPU usage could be detrimental to the processor as it builds up excessive heat and to keep this kind of video to a minimum.
My question is can anyone roughly suggest what a maximum time on YouTube, for example, would be, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, is 10 minutes too long? I have plenty of RAM at 768. Some guidelines?
    Thanks.

    Hey WZZZ,
Thanks for the star and kind words.
I'm the de facto Mac guy at my kids' school and we have around 25 iMac Slot Loaders working there. You can imagine they get abused quite a bit. There are 10 running Garage Band in the Music Department. That puts a tremendous strain on the CPU and I'm actually surprised that they run it so well. My son had a 600 iMac running GarageBand, he was complaining that it was getting jumpy and when I looked at it he was running 10 unlocked tracks simultaneously! So now he has an eMac G4 800 and that of course runs a lot better.
So to sum up, with all the abuse of those machines in terms of the CPUs the problems I have with them have nothing to do with that. The problems have more to do with parts of the OS that they toss, headphone jacks abused, CDs jammed in the slots, and the like.
A couple of other related things. I've got Hardware Monitor, demo, installed and I think it reported it could only find the hard drive sensor, if I'm not mistaken - nothing else on this Mac with a sensor. Is that right?
I see references to CPU sensors on 400 iMacs but on the 400 I have here for repair Temperature Monitor reports no sensors. Perhaps there were different versions of the 400.
But very good to hear that the fan is a good idea for CRT related things. Should I keep the fan running-mostly for that hard core CRT stuff- even if the computer is sleeping and the room temp. is only around 62-64 F.? (We need to put on warm clothes to sit in front of this thing now, but worth it to keep this old machine happy).
On the one I did the fan pushed the airflow in the direction of the passive flow of the iMac - in at the bottom and out the grill by the handle.
One more question, more out of curiosity than anything else: If I move this small clip-on fan close to the case - right now it's about 3 feet away and the image is stable - the screen begins to flicker and flutter quite a lot. My theory is that that's happening not necessarily because of electro-magnetic interference from the fan motor, but rather, because the back of the tube is getting cooled unevenly. What do you think?
Well the classic failures that I see in the iMac are in this order:
    1) Dielectric breakdown of the flyback transformers internal insulation. This is heat/age related and a common problem with CRTs in general.
    2) Breakdown of high voltage electolytic capacitors and regular high voltage capacitors on the neck board and PAV supply.
    3) Solder problems with the flyback itself. This is diagnosed by the upside down boot technique.
I used to repair these problems but now it's easier for me to swap the Firewire boards into working 350s. I've got 12 of those in the basement currently.

  • Question about cpu support

Hi have been absent for awhile then about two weeks ago I stopped here regarding a prob I was having with my mouse.  I read a post aabout somebody who had successfully changed his cpu multiplier using the k7n420 which nobody had reported doing successfully for several months after the boards release.  At least that was my impression.  After confirming that someone had done it and that after updating their bios to 2.6 the multiplier could not be changed again I decided After six months of running steady at the default settings.  I busted out my silver pen and proceeded to unlock my athlon 1700.  To my utter astonishment I could now freely set the multiplier.  My previous systems were all overclocked and I had a watercooling rig mothballed in the closet.  My question is if the k7n420 will support the 2600 does that mean that the bios will include a fsb of 166 or will the multiplier on the new cpu's be higher than 12.5.  My current settings with the unlocked cpu and watercooling have me maxxed out at 12.5.  I blew up one of the first boards I had by using the fsb as a means of overclocking and do not wish to risk the same "early chipset initialization death".  But I have upped it a little and the system is unstable at anything more than one notch above default.  However the system is fine with the default settings and I am currently at 12.5 with the voltage at default.  increasing  the default voltage did not improve the trouble when I increase the fsb.  So I was hoping that a bios release would either include the 166 fsb or a higher multiplier if there is one (I dont think there is though).  It seems to me that if they are to support the 2600 there will have to be a change because at default and 12.5 XP2000 is the limit.
PS  The ring buffer problem appears to be related to a 24x10x40 cdrw from iomagic which I had bought on sale for 49.99 "I couldn't resist getting one for the price."  After I noticed the ring buffer error in the event log always followed an atapi controller error and the a cd error I removed the iomagic burner and put my previous LG8120b back in and have not seen the problem since.  iomagic was less than helpful and after researching the burner I found pretty much nothing other than others looking for help with the same burner.  Their is no information on firmware for it  and some of the mostwell known cd info sites hardly even mention it.  On top of that the support guy I chatted with didn't know nvidia had a chipset and told me I probobly had a via even after I explained to him that it has been around for awhile I closed by suggesting he go to nvidia's web site and see himself.  I mean really they already have another chipset about to hit the shelves how can a tech support person not be aware of these things.

    rosmini,
Since you are on Tom's Hardware site, they have a video, which has been referenced in this forum several times, on how to safely unlock the processor.
I would not bother with trying to unlock the processor until they come out with the next series of chips.  There is talk of the 2400+ and 2600+ coming unlocked.  Then the processor you have with we worth peanuts and then if you want to take a chance on trashing it, go for it.
Your best bet is just raising the FSB a few notches and you will get the desired effect and more.  It give you a higher processor speed but most importantly you get the greater memory bandwidth.  That is where you really see the benefits.  Look at the GeForce Cards as an example.  Overclocking the Core does little, but overclocking the RAM makes major boosts in performance.
    Take Care,
    Richard

  • Satellite P200D-12f PSPBQE - Question about CPU/GFX temperature

    Hey guys,
    Here are the laptop specs:
TOSHIBA Satellite Series P200D-12F Notebook - AMD Turion 64 X2 Processor TL-62 2.1GHz 2MB Cache, 2048MB DDR2-667 SO-Dimm Memory (2x1024), DVD Super Multi writer optical drive, 250 GB SATA, 5400 obr/min, 17.1" WXGA+ TrueBright High Brightness (1440x900 resolution) TFT LCD Display, 10/100 Mbit Ethernet LAN, 802.11b/g wireless LAN, 56K Modem, ATI Radeon HD2600 256MB dedicated graphics, Built-in Harman Kardon stereo speakers, 3.45kg, Bluetooth, integrated webcam, Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, 2 Year International Warranty
I cant find any threads or sites that define idle temp for this cpu and graphic card,
in normal stance and high performance/ playing games.
I have an extra cooler (link: http://www.mimovrste.com/artikel/2210016012/hladilnik-za-prenosnik-akasa-ak-nbc-02b ) underneath the laptop. It does help much but still its running on *53C* (celsius) while surfing the internet.
Without that cooler its around 60C. It sounds strange to me.
When i play games on high performance the core temp goes to *63C*, without that xtra coller *+80C!!!!!!*
I clean the heat sinks every 1 month with a huge compressor :)
I dont let any dust in there. I have the laptop like a year now runs great, but still Im interested whats the temperature of our similar models.
I had some "turn off problems" when i didnt have the extra cooler, but now it runs great, but still im not convinced its the "normal" temp. :S
So plz help a lost soul surfing the internet finding nothing to answer his question :)
    tnx

    heya
the problem is i hate vista :) i have installed xp on it. there are no xp drivers for this laptop. i mixed with some similar models same components xp drivers and everything is working well now ;) no yellow thingies in the system window - hardware components. all cool. all games running with no artifact and no weird thingies.
but still im interested in the temperature.
i installed the old Toshiba power saver (win xp) works fine but i dont see any difference with it. no effect. cooling method is on high(as it was on the begging) and no changes. i hoped the vents gonna speed up just a lil bit . but didnt.
how the temp sound to u? high or ok? for an AMD cpu :) the gfx is at 29C :) the cpu runs at 50C surfing internet , while playing games it goes to 63C.

  • Question about CPU upgrade for Satellite A30-104?

    Hello,
My Satellite A30-104 has recently come to the end of its warranty, and having had to open up the heatsink for cleaning and seeing that the CPU was accessible, I wonder if there is any (likely) scope for upgrading it.
The processor is a Celeron (Northwood) 2.6GHz. I'm not looking for more grunt, I'd prefer a lower-power chip, though the much larger L2 cache of a Pentium 4 is also desirable. I'd be very grateful if anyone could advise whether any upgrades are likely available, and if so which chips would be appropriate? If I can give any more useful spec information, please ask.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, thanks for the reply -- and sorry it went ignored so long, it turns out I hadn't configured my email watches correctly :(
I appreciate that it's really a job for a technician, and I don't want to brick a perfectly good computer, but I think its EOL is not far off anyway so I'm prepared to be a little more invasive than before.
I know that I can get at the CPU, and I know the basic precautions for physically tampering with PC internals.
What I'm first of all concerned about is this: if I replace the CPU, and it doesn't function with the laptop, can this damage other parts of the system such that it'd no longer work by replacing the original?
The Celeron puts out a great deal of heat (all the time) but isn't it fair to assume that a P4-M will be less hot?

  • Need help ASAP, have a tough question about CPU and BIOS...

Alrighty guys... I'm not super smart when it comes to BIOS and the nitty gritty computer stuff, but I know my way around. Here's the thing...
This is the desktop I have:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=120&prodSeriesId=...
It's sorta old, but it gets the job done quickly. I had an issue with it some time ago and I thought it was the power supply, so I replaced it. While I was waiting for the power supply to arrive, I took the CPU out, just to be nosey. I accidentally bent a couple of the prongs, so I had to get a new one.
First, I bought a Black Edition AMD quad core, but the 125W was too high for my 95W chip. I had to sell it. I sold that and I just bought a new one:
    http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Phenom%20X4%209850%20-%20HD9850XAJ4BGH%20(HD9850XAGHBOX).html
I put it in the computer, boot it up and it goes to the HP boot screen and then goes to a black screen stating that the CPU is not compatible and that it's going to shut down. When I reset it and try to press F10 or any of the keys it states that it's going to go to that screen, but then just goes to the black CPU shutdown screen again. There is one thing that the computer will do though. When I press F2 when it's in the black shutdown screen, it will SOMETIMES load the two HDD's that I have. It's just really weird. One time I got it to go to a HP diagnosis page. It showed the CPU and had a big green check next to it. It checked the memory too, and it got a check. Then it just froze and I had to shut it down. I can't seem to get it to that screen again.
My real question is why won't it recognize that my CPU is compatible? Do I need to update my BIOS? Can I do that without a CPU and a running OS? I really don't feel like selling this processor. I know that I should have just gotten the exact same processor model that came out of it.
Any info will be nice! Thanks so much!!

    Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion a6720y Desktop Computer and it's M2N78-LA (Violet) motherboard. According to the specs, your computer supports the following CPUs;
    Socket type: AM2/AM2+
    TDP: 95 watts
    AMD Athlon X2 (Bt)
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 up to 6000+ (W)
AMD Phenom Triple-Core up to 8xxx (AM2+) (Toliman)
AMD Phenom Quad-Core 9xxx series (AM2+) up to 9850 (Agena)
Based on the CPU part number supplied, you purchased another 125 watt CPU. The AMD Phenom X4 9850 (HD9850XAGHBOX) isn't going to work because it is rated at 125 watts and therefore is not compatible with your motherboard. Please consider returning (as Dave suggests) or selling your current CPU and getting one of these 95 watt AMD Phenom X4 CPUs.

  • Question about CPU FSB and K7N2-L

This is probably a nub question, but here goes anyway:
I currently have an 1800 XP Palomino processor which supports 266mhz fsb.  I just installed this board with this processor and left all the jumpers at default.  After reading the manual it says I should short jumper J11 (133/166mhz) on the mobo, and make the appropriate settings in the bios to achieve 266mhz for the cpu fsb.  Now, I know it says this in the manual, but I thought I'd better make sure that this is the right procedure before I go ahead and do it so I don't screw anything up.
If anyone could help me out on this it would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

Cheers... it's interesting how many people make that mobo/RAM choice. I use a K7N2G-L with Crucial PC2700 DDR (2x256) and it works fine. Kudos on reading the manual, frequently it has the answers you're looking for. You're correct... make sure J10 (FSB Mode Jumper-133MHz position) and J11 (FSB Frequency Jumper-133/166 position) are set correctly, BIOS settings on the "Advanced Chipset Features" page are correct for your processor/RAM, and you should be all set. There is a good article on driver loading order (by liquidsoul) on the http://www.amdforums.com site... look under "MSI Motherboards".

  • Questions about editing with io HD or Kona 3 cards

My production company is switching from Avid to Final Cut Pro. I have a few editing system questions (not ingesting and outputting, just questions about systems for the actual editors - we will have mac pros with either kona 3 or io HD for ingest and outputs)
    1) Our editors work from home so they most likely will be using MacBook Pros - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.6GHz 4GB computers with eSata drives to work on uncompressed HD, will they be able to work more quickly in FCP if they are using the new Mac Pro 8-Core (2 Quad-Core 2.8GHz Intel Xeon) or will the mac book pro's be able to hold their own with editing hour long documentaries, uncompressed HD
    2) Will having an AJA Kona 3 (if we get the editors mac pros) or io HD (for the mac book pros) connected be a significant help to the editor's and their process, will it speed up their work, will it allow them to edit sequences without having to render clips of different formats? Or will they be just as well off without editing with the io HD?
I'm just trying to get a better understanding of the necessity of the AJA hardware in terms of working with the editors to help them do what they have to do with projects that have been shot on many formats- DVCPro tapes, Aiptek cameras that create QTs and P2 footage.
    Thanks

    1. with the IoHD, laptops become OK working with ProRes and simply eSata setups. Without the Io, they can't view externally on a video monitor (a must in my book). It will not speed up rendering a ton, nor will it save renders of mixed formats. The idea is to get all source footage to ProRes with the Io, and then the Io also lifts the CPU from having to convert ProRes to something you can monitor externally on a video monitor, and record back to any tape format you want... all in real time.
    2. Kona 3's on Towers would run circles around render times on a Laptop... no matter what the codec, but the Kona does not really speed renders up. That's a function of the CPU and just how fast is it. (lots of CPU's at faster speeds will speed up render times).
I'd recommend you capture to ProRes with Io's or the Kona 3 and don't work in uncompressed HD. You gain nothing doing it quality wise at all. And you only use up a ton of disk space (6 times the size in fact) capturing and working in uncompressed HD, which from your post, you're not shooting anyway. The lovely thing about ProRes is that it's visually lossless, efficient, and speeds up the editing process. Mixing formats can be done, but it's better to go to ProRes for all source footage, and edit that way.
With either the Kona or the Io, you then can output to uncompressed HD tape... that's what they do for you no matter what codec you've edited in. ProRes is designed to be the codec of choice for all HD projects when you're shooting different formats especially... Get them all singing the same tune in your editing stations, and you'll be a much happier camper. Only reason to buy laptops is portability... otherwise you're much better off with towers and the Kona 3 speed wise.

  • Question about delete statement

I have question about delete statement...
i am performing some simple delete statement against one table..but its taking so long..How can we check whether particular delete statements actually deleting records or not..?

Is the associated select-statement returning rows or not?
If yes -> delete is deleting
If no -> delete is just using CPU-cycles
To tune the delete-statement, you have to tune the corresponding select-statement. To tune the select-statement, you want to read the thread When your query takes too long ...

  • Some questions about building  a plug in

    Hello,
1.I'm trying to build a plug in ( for EM12c release 2 ) for my standalone java application - which exposes mbeans whom i want to collect some metrics with.
It's been a while since i started to build it - and I asked quite a lot of quesions about it - because the documnets supplied with the EDK and
the books ( ProgrammersGuide, ProgrammersReferece and the README file ) are not very clear to me ( I'm a newbie with EM in general .. )
So far some of the questions got answered and were very halpfull with this long process. BUT, there are some questions that nobody answered yet.
I'm quite "stuck" with it. I'm talking about the questions in : Re: A question about updating metadata files in plug in
I have a deadline for this plug in ( which is very close ..) so this the reason I post this new message.
I will appriciate any help about those questions .
    2. Regarding the above, ( hoping to have an answered soon ..) I'm trying another way to buils this plug in:
In the README file there is this section( 3.6 : using MPCUI ) . I read the programmersReference ( chapter 8 ) and followed the instructions both in the README file and the ProgrammersReference .
For a begining, I just wanted to modify a small thing in the example supplied ( Demo Host System ) just to get started with something .
So i modify the file which contains the label ' Select member ... ' ( i don't remember the name of the file since the project is in my office , and I can't copy/paste ..- I think the the file icontians the name ' ConfirmationTarget .xml - it's one of the pages seen while adding a target ) .
I i changed it , i build the project ( using FlexBuilder) but did not use ANT as it's says in the README - the eclipse IDE build this file automatically
( HostSystem.swf  in bin-debug dir as it says in the README ) . I copied this file to stage_dir/oms/metadata/mpcui .
i build a new plug in ( i incremented the version of it ) - no errors, everty thing was fine .I also copied this file to the oms server ( it wasn't there before )
and than run the commad ' emctl register oms ...' as it says in section 3.6 - and o got 'Success' eventually .
Now, when i opened the EM console , hoping to see tge change i made ( again , it's just a change of the title of the step while adding the target , and adding another menuitem to the 3 item that were alreay there ( CPU, FS, etc ) .
I believe wad i did is right- i mean changing in the right file and place ( there is no title like like this in any oter source file in the whole project )
but still, I didn't see any change! it seems execatly as it was befoer the change ..
    Any idea?
    Thanks.

Regarding your question #2. Please read my response here carefully as it covers a number of different issues.
    1. Ant is not required to build the SWF file in your plug-in. It is an OPTION. Section 8.27 describes the different development options using either Ant or FlexBuilder.
    2. You do NOT need to ever copy a SWF file to any location under the OMS runtime. You need to include it in the stage area and then either build an OPAR or use emctl to incrementally update the deployed plug-in. It has to either be deployed as part of the plug-in deployment or updated incrementally using emctl register oms metadata. Section 8.27.2.6 describes the specific steps to do this incremental update.
Steps to update the SWF associated with demo_hostsample. These are covered in the README and in chapter 8.
    1. deploy the demo_hostsample plug-in as described in the README
    2. create an instance of the Host Sample target type through manually discovery (Add Targets->Add Non-Host Target Specifying Properties)
    3. using the demo_hostsample.zip project in Flex Builder, modify some part of the code, for example, modify the line containing label="Current Status" to label="My New Label"
    4. rebuild the SWF, to be sure you can to a Clean build of the demo_hostsample project
    5. ensure there is an updated copy of the HostSample.swf under demo_hostsample\mpcui\bin-debug (NOT bin-release, unless you Exported A Release Build)
    6. copy that updated HostSample.swf file to the location on the OMS machine where you unzipped and built the OPAR for the demo_hostsample plug-in
    7. cd to the stage/oms/metadata/mpcui directory and replace the current HostSample.swf with the one you just built (BE SURE ITS THE UPDATED FILE)
    8. execute the command "emctl register oms metadata -sysman_pwd sysman -pluginId oracle.sysman.ohs -service mpcui -file demo_hostsample_uimd_swf.xml (BE SURE TO USE THE CORRECT sysman_pwd)
At this point you should be able to go to the homepage for the Host Sample target you created and see the changes.

  • Question about servlet architecture

    Hello,
I have a question about Web Application / servlet architecture and development, and haven't had any luck finding an answer so far. My plan must be either unusual, or wrong, or both, so I'm hoping the community here could point me in the right direction.
I have quite a bit of background in OSGi, but very little in servlets. I know my architecture would work with something such as sever-side Equinox, but for the open source project I'm contemplating, I think that the more mainstream Tomcat/servler route would be better -- assuming it can be done. Here is a rather simplified scenario:
There is a class, Manager. It could be a Java class that implements Runnable, or a non-HTTP servlet (GenericServlet?), but somehow it should be configured such that it runs as soon as Tomcat starts.
When Manager runs, it instantiates its primary member variable: Hashtable msgHash; mshHash will map Strings (usernames) to ArrayList<String> (list of messages awaiting that user). Manager also has two primary public methods: addMsg() and getMsgs().
    The pseudocode for addMsg is:
    void addMsg(String username, String msg) {
    if username=="*" { for each msgList in msgHash { msgList.add(msg) } return;
    if username not in msgHash { msgHash.add(username, new ArrayList<String>) }
    msgHash[username].add(msg)
    And for getMsgs():
    String getMsgs(username) {
    String s = "";
    for each msg in msgHash[username] { s = s + msg; }
    return s;
Once Manager has started, it starts two HTTP Servlets: Sender and Receiver, passing a reference back to itself as it creates the servlets.
    The HTML associated with Sender contains two text inputs (username and message) and a button (send). When the send button is pressed and data is POSTed to Sender, Sender takes it and calls Manager.addMsg(username.value, message.value);
Receiver servlet is display only. It looks in the request for HTTP GET parameter "username". When the request comes in, Receiver calls Manager.getMsgs(username) and dumps the resulting string to the browser.
In addition to starting servlets Sender and Receiver, the Manager object is also spawning other threads. For example, it might spawn a SystemResourceMonitor thread. This thread periodically wakes up, reads the available disk space and average CPU load, calls Manager.addMsg("*", diskAndLoadMsg), and goes back to sleep for a while.
I've ignored the synchronization issues in this example, but during its lifecycle Manager should be idle until it has a task to do, using for example wait() and notify(). If ever addMsg() is called where the message string is "shutdown", Manager's main loop wakes up, and Manager shuts down the two servlets and any threads that it started. Manager itself may then quit, or remain resident, awaiting a command to turn things back on.
Is any of this appropriate for servlets/Tomcat? Is there a way to do it as I outlined, or with minor tweaks? Or is this kind of application just not suited to servlets, and I should go with server-side Equinox OSGi?
Thanks very much for any guidance!
    -Mike

Check the tomcat documentation for more information on that (the web.xml contains such servlets already though). From this servlet you can start your Manager.

Once Manager has started, it starts two HTTP Servlets: Sender and Receiver, passing a reference back to itself as it creates the servlets. Not needed. You can simply create your two servlets and have them invoked through web calls, Tomcat is the only one that can manage servlets in any case. Servlets have a very short lifecycle - they stay in memory from the first time they are invoked, but the only time that they actually do something is when they are called through the webserver, generally as the result of somebody running the servlet through a webbrowser, either by navigating to it or by posting data to it from another webpage. The servlet call ends as soon as the request is completed.

When the request comes in, Receiver calls Manager.getMsgs(username) and dumps the resulting string to the browser. This states already that you are going to run the servlets through a browser. You run "Sender" by navigating to it in the browser. You run "Receiver" when you post your data to it. Manager has nothing to do with that.

This thread periodically wakes up, reads the available disk space and average CPU load, calls Manager.addMsg("*", diskAndLoadMsg), and goes back to sleep for a while.Since you want to periodically run the SystemResourceMonitor, it is better to use a Timer for that in stead of your own thread.

-MikeI don't see anything that cannot be done in a normal java web environment, as long as you are aware of how servlets operate.
