KT4VL FSB Problem!!!!!

I have an XP 2100 with the KT4VL motherboard and i cannot set the fsb to 133 which is where is should run comfortably.  If i set it to 133 in bios(which by the way is the most current version of bios) the system will not boot.  It gets to a generic light blue winxp screen and has an error message.  The message is different everytime but seems to always have the word "AGP" in the error description.  If I try to set fsb using fuzzy logic, as soon as i get past 112Mhz, the system just instantly restarts.  I have another system identical processor, video, etc... except that one has the KT3 Ultra and i run that at 133 no problem ever.  Any Ideas?????
KT4VL, XP 2100, 512MB DDR266, Nvidia G4 @AGP 8X, WinXP Pro.

bas.  im new to this but it confuses the hell outta me.
the cpu cooler is OK to start at 110 mhz, but if it starts up at 111 it instantaneously overheats?
even if this isnt the problem im having ( my temps have been below like 40 c at 100 fsb but it wont work at 133) im curious as to whats up with this.....

  • KT4VL FSB/CDR problem thread

I made this thread over on AMDMB, regarding a FSB and CD-CDRW problems that a lot of people seem to be reporting with the KT4VL.
It seems a lot of people are having problems with these motherboards, including myself.
    http://www.amdforums.com/showindex.php?s=&threadid=174299
Do you think this deserves some attention here on the MSI site?
Is there anythign that can be done to get MSI involved with this problem?

    Bas,
Forgive me. Ofcourse, when trying to troubleshoot any computer problem, the settings should be set at default.
This computer works very well with the memory timings set aggressively. I play games for hours without problems, except for the CDR and CDRW.
Okay, I went into bios, and selected Load BIOS Setup Defaults. Then I turned off all Wake-on functions, and I set all drives to 32 Bit transfer mode. I also set the PCI Latency to 64, and set the FSB to 133.
Using Nero v5.5.9.14, I attempted to copy a large amount of data from my hard drive to a CDRW. Using Neros' data verification utility, I got the following message:
    "#78 VERIFYERR 13 File UDFCompilationImpl.cpp, Line 6222   Status summary   Total files=878, identical=845, different=8, inaccessible=24, skipped=1.
    12:32:46 PM   #79 Phase 81 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1571    Data verification failed"
I have also tried to copy large amounts of data from CDR to my HDD, used CloneCD4, and used a program called BurnInTest v3.0 Pro, all of these "tests" failed too.
Before I changed my motherboard, I had no problems with the CDR, CDRW, or CDRW media. All of these copying programs worked well.
I remind you that there are many other people that are having the same problems with the KT4VL and the KT4 Ultra.
There is definitely a problem with these motherboards. Many people are having the same problems, it can't be that we are all setting up the computer wrong.
I have built many computers for myself, friends, and family, and I have never had a problem with any of them.
If there is a setup problem, all of us MSI KT4 owners would sure like to know how to fix it.
Funny thing is, the CDR and CDRW will work good at 100 FSB, but not at 133.. How would anyone explain that?
    Bas,
Thanks for your reply in this matter. Any help that you can provide will be a great help to me, and the large amount of other people that are posting and following the threads here and on AMDMB.com. that are having the same problems that I am having with these motherboards.

  • Low FSB problem on MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR.

Today is the first day this happened, and I don't know why it did it. I've had this for 5 days with no such problem like this B4.
Here goes... in my BIOS, I have the FSB set to 166(333), and the Ram synced with it. This afternoon I started up my computer and went into Aida32, and it said my FSB was at 157(314), it usually says 168(336).
Aida32 isn't lying, my clock was even gaining time. (That is the reasond I checked)
My question is, what would cause this?
Could it be bad power? A lousy start up?
Maybe the CPU? I've seen this happen on a couple other nForce2's I've had. Could it be nVidia's fault?
I just don't know were to start on troubleshooting this problem.

If it says the same when you go into the bios as Aida32 is reporting, you may have a defect somewhere on the board causing the issue. If not, uninstall your current version of Aida32 and try going back to the previous version and see what it reads.
That is what I first thought, but the real-time-clock is also running very fast when aida32 said it was 157, as you know the clock is FSB related.
I think I know what the problem is, and I'm almost sure it's power related. If I turn on my computer first then my monitor, my UPS overloads and shuts everything off plugged into the battery section of the UPS. To avoid this I have to turn on the monitor first, then the computer.
The day I started experiencing this problem, is the day that I turned on my computer first then the monitor, thus the UPS overloaded. So what I did to fix this, is I shut down my computer, switched off the PSU, unplugged the power cord, plugged it back in, turned the PSU on, then the computer on (monitor still was on), then it started it up and everything was back to normal. I've restarted my computer 10 times, and it's been working good ever since.
I'll keep you posted if I run into this problem again.

  • Follow up on FSB problem

Well, I have read all of the sticky notes and troubleshooting guides and I am just lost at this point...  Being an A+ instructor, I just don't understand how this could be happening....
I am able to get the FSB of my MB to 120, anything above that and the system does not post.  Runs fine at 120 for hours.  Checked cooler.  Attempted various settings for memory (+33/+66/standard) and different voltages for CPU.  Disconnected power from everything except MB, same problem.
Seems like alot of people are having the same problem because there are alot of posts about this.  However, I can't find a single solution, other then suggestions to check cooler installation.  I have everything installed right and I am using all brand name parts-except the MB and video card which are MSI X(  X(  X(

  • Fsb problem with kt6

    Hello,
I just bought a kt6 with a xp2700+ and i cannot raise the fsb to 166. At default when it is set to 100, no problem at all. But if i go to 133 the pc starts up boot under windows and 10 minutes later shutdown. (or sooner if i use the cd rom)
I tried to swap memories, change latency, change the graphic gard, no improvements.
Do you think it could be the power supply or the mainboard ? (cpu idle at 50 °c = 123 F)
My power supply specs (400W noname)
    3.3V - 18A
    5V - 27A
    12V - 16A
    My system:
    xp2700+
    kt6
    ibm hdd 80go
    radeon 9800 pro
audigy 2 (not installed for testing)
    floppy
    dvd pionneer
    Thank you for your replies.

Thank you for your reply. I checked everything and concluded it might be the processor or the mainboard. I managed to exchange the board with my retailer. I have now a brand new kt6 and everything seems to work perfectly.
But my 2700+ is at 61 °C idling, is it a normal temperature ?

  • KT6 Delta LSR FSB problem solved!

Here's some FYI for anybody with boot up troubles. A friend made a suggestion that got me thinking the dividers might not be set quite right on my mobo so I decided to raise the FSB to 210 and it solved my booting problem. I've tested this out several times and it definately works. Instead of trying to run 11 X 200, I'm at 10.5 X 210 and scoring great:
Anyone having troubles might want to try this out. Good luck.

  • X38 ocing not happening fsb problem

Have had lots of help else where re this problem, though with no sucess, so have contacted msi and am awaiting reply.
I change the fsb from 266 to anything 300-440, bios states new cpu value/speed however it dosn't actually change, when i boot into windows it is 266, i can lower the multiplier that stays changed so do all other settings volts etc but fsb always reverts back to 266 no matter what i try fsb volt increase does not help...anyone have any ideas

Which BIOS Version are you currently using?
    Is DOT disabled in BIOS?
    Quote
when i boot into windows it is 266
Which tool+version are you using to monitor FSB clock speed?
If you change FSB clock speed to, let's say, 280 MHz and save & exit, will the BIOS revert to 266 MHz as well, when you re-enter after start-up?

  • 845e max a fsb problem

no need to tell u what i have because it's listed below
now my problem is that i can not up the fsb to anything more that 110 why? i should be able to take it to at least 133 rite? if i try anything higher it will not boot. i also tried uping the vcore to 1.65 but that also did not help so i am thinking it is that the board is bad. any suggestion would be greatfull thanks>

It might be the memory, try setting it to 200MHz so it will have more room to overclock to.

  • FSB Problems...

    Hello guys,
    (My Setup:
    MSI KT4 Ultra & Athlon XP 2400+)
although i've got problems with that CRC-Error Stuff too, my current problem is another one.
When i try to overclock my CPU by increasing the FSB to 134 or 135 Mhz (for example), this Infoview program from the MSI-CD  (and even some other programs) indicates that the FSB is set to 142 Mhz and my CPU is set to 2133 Mhz, which is accordig to the 142 Mhz FSB.
Whats wrong - anybody got an idea?????
    ThX in advance...
    Mistagi
    (don't consider my english - i'm from germany )

You can have a look at my hardware below...
    Chassis: Antec 1080B (300w PSU / 180w COMBINED)
    Mainboard: MSI KT3 Ultra ARU
    CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1800+

RAM: Micron DDR 266MHz (2x256MB DIMMs)
    Sound: Avance AC'97 Audio
I'm having the same problem where my system becomes very unstable at higher bus speeds. However, I have ordered a new PSU today as a solution to this problem. Basically, CPUs and video cards are much more demanding and the more devices you have in your computer the more power you're going to need. I recommend purchasing the Enermax EG465P-VE (FCA) 450W ATX PS. It has a higher amperage rating and will most likely solve your problem.

  • FSB problem

I would greatly appreciate everyone's help in solving my problem. I need my computer working and cannot do it.
I have Athlon 1700+ processor and KT4V mainboard. I set the FSB from 100 to 133. Then my CPU indicated 1467 MHz and I changed FSB to 154. After rebooting and saving BIOS i get no signal sent to my monitor. I suppose I set FSB to high, but now I dont know how recover my previous state.
If anyone can help me with this problem I would really appreciate it. Thanks all for your help!

clear cmos and it will set it back to defaults..
turn off your computer and find the pin on ur board, move the jumper to the clear cmos setting, unplug ur computer, wait a few minutes, move pin back to original location, plug in computer, power up...
you will have to set up anything in bios you previously changed that wasnt a default setting

  • CPU FSB Problem

    hi all
i have quite an annoying problem, i recently bought a new Athlon XP 2100+ cpu to upgrade from my Duron, and it wont run at 2100+!!! im perty sure that its not the cpu, koz i can run it at a 100Mhz FSB, but Windows crashes whenever i boot it a 2100+
When the pc starts it says "Athlon XP 2100+" but othertimes nothing comes up at all
    my specs are
Athlon XP 2100+ (not running at 2100+)
    MSI-KT3 Ultra 2 CC (MS 6380E) Ver 1.0
    256MB DDR PC2700
64mb ATi Radeon 7500 (pci card though)
    20gb hd
anyu help would be hot, there arent ne jumpers for the fsb either which is a pain, can ne one help me? ;(

    Hi again  )
I think that you are in need of a better PSU; 300W will not be enough (and Codegen does not have a very good reputation also) - you will need a brand PSU of at least 350W (Antec, Enermax, for instance) and if you are thinking of more upgrades in the future, you may consider a 400W also. The combined output of the PSU on 3.3 and 5V rails is most important; you can find more info on that in the good articles section.

  • KT3 Ultra oem FSB problems

I just got my KT3 Ultra (oem) and AMD Athalon XP 1800 yesterday and procided to throw my new machine together. I was a little dissapointed when I booted up and could not get the board to report the correct CPU frequency (1.1 ghz as opposed to 1.5 ghz) no mater what I did. Looking through the fourms I noticed a few other people where having the same problem. Well I finally got it to work after banging away at it for a few hours, so I thought I'd post what I did, and hopefully help a few people out. It was actully kind of weird... 1st set the FSB jumper on the mobo to your correct FSB settings, then go into the bios and frequency settings. Now your FSB should be reading whatever you set it to on the board.... now for the weird part... go into the freqency selector window, and even if the FSB is set to the correct speed delete it and type it back in... I don't know if this'll work for you, but it certenly did for me..... weird.

    Hi,
    The non-OEM KT3 boards don't have jumpers.

  • Fsb problem....wont boot with 133......

    Hello
let me first apologize if this has already been answered in one of the troubleshooters.....i looked them over, but I may have missed something.....anyway, my problem is that when I tried to correct the fsb setting in the bios to 133 ( it was by default at 100, and I have an xp 1800) xp wouldnt boot up- the computer posted fine, and I didn't recieve any beeps, but as soon as the first two post screens flashed, the screen just went black and there was no activity from the HD LED ( I left it for about 10 minutes just to make sure)...however, when I changed the fsb back to 100, everything booted up fine.... the other strange thing is that Im pretty sure the computer booted fine with the 133 setting when I had xp home running, but since I installed xp pro, Ive been having these issues........anyway, my computer seems to be working perfectly except now Ive got the fairly annoying problem that its only recognizing a 1.1 GHZ Cpu instead of my xp1800....any suggestions?

    sgt_spadina,
I would try to start up with minimal hardware: mobo, cpu, one memory stick, graphics, monitor, keyboard.
Now, if computer boots ok, gradually add new pieces of hardware. If it does not boot, focus on your power supply and heatsink, as xroyal had mentioned.
    Take care

  • Fsb problem with Neo4 Ultra

I have been having a problem with my neo4 ultra that seems to be pretty common.
I can not boot past a fsb of 219 reliably.
    My system is
    AMD64 3200+
    MSI K8N Neo4 nForce4 Ultra
    Wavemaster Case
OCZ Gold Series Dual 1GB DDR PC-3200
    Thermalright XP-90
    OCZ ModStream 520W
    Sapphire Radeon X800 XL
I am doing it all with clockgen to up my FSB to find the best results. I am on 1.24 BIOS
    My Basic BIOS settings are
    FSB = 219
    HTT = 4x
Mem at 166 Voltage at 2.85
    Mem Timmings at 2.5-3-2-8 1T
    CPU 10x startup - cpu-z reports voltage at 1.58
Rasied FSB by 5 at a time to 251 and super pi failed.
Changed vcore to 1.60 and the best I could get super pi to run at was 247. So I decided to start fine tunning my memory.
    I set mem to 180 2.5-3-3-10-1T
Used clockgen again and what was interesting was FSB of 255 passed with a superpi of 34 sec. Now it failed at fsb258.
Changed mem timmings to 200 2.5-3-3-10-1T
And best I could get was fsb=230 and superpi failed. I decided to keet the 180 divider and see how far I can drop the timming at 180.
So I ended up at this
    FSB =251
    HTT 4x
    Mem 180 2-3-2-8 1T volts = 2.85
    CPU 10x Volts cpu-z reports 1.63
Runs prime stable all night at these settings.
But here is the thing if I go into the BIOS and change fsb to 221 My machine will not boot.
I am guessing the power up sequence is wrong in the BIOS

I cannot boot at over FSB 219, either. Will overclock fine with Clockgen when in XP (have tried up to 270 fsb, and the CPU will run 2574mhz at 1.5). But have to reset bios if I set the FSB over 219, regardless of memory HTT, vcore, etc , settings. I've been watching other forums and have seen MANY people with the same problem. One of the things I have in common with a lot of other people with this problem is that my Winnie 3500+ Retail will not run much over stock with the low vcore that this board gives as default. I have used Core Center, Sisoft Sandra 2005, and CPUz 1.27 to check vcore once in windows. All of them show 1.36 for vcore. That's lower than default of 1.4. And when I set the vcore for 1.55 and the overvoltage thingy to highest percentage in bios, all the monitoring apps show 1.526, which is waaay lower than it should be (1.67). Now, I will concede that the monitoring apps could be wrong. But, I believe the 219mhz POST issue is due to the start up vcore and multiplier is PROBABLY default at post. So, if your FSB is set for more than the CPU will run at it's default vcore and multiplie + set FSB, then the board freezies at POST. If the bios would just boot at whatever you set into the bios, then there wouldn't be a problem, unless yoiu have set thingswaay too high. Then it would just do what it does now, not POST, and you would have to reset the bios. There are a lot of Winchester core CPU's out there that will run high mhz at default voltages. But, there are a lot of newer Winnie's that won't. Mine is one of them.
Now it seems that there is a limitation on the board of 1.55 vcore with a Winnie. Even using the overvoltage setting. What is that all about? You put overclocking friendly on the retail box, on the product page on the main site, and all the review sites say overclocking potential is graet, and then you limit the vcore to 1.5v? Crazy logic (or should I say "Fuzzy Logic")   I am close to eBaying this board (only had it 2 - 3 days, but won't send it back to ZZF for replacement as all of them could have the same problem) and go with the DFI or the Abit Fatality.
Am I saying all this right?
